@@karlmaalab Yeah man. This guys does it in every video. And I was super surprised when he released a video in couple of hours after the apple event. Not just that he puts in lot of effort, he is super efficient too.
I love how you've transformed your reviews from just the specs & experience to a more strategic & marketing-focused aspect of where the product fits. Feels WAY more valuable to me than just "here's what this product does." Such an amazing video 👏👏👏
Dude, exactly! As a marketing AND tech lover, I can safely say that Marques is by far my favorite youtube channel. This strategic part is the golden cherry on top of an already great tech review content.
I think it has become more and more necessary for the average consumer to be aware of these sorts of things - I'm grateful that MKBHD has recognized it and is always evolving.
everything that @jake jaramillo wrote here is true for me, Marques. please continue doing this in the future. transparency is very much needed and we need to understand how companies are learning about human mind and how they work to take advantage of it (without us people knowing it). I've been with your videos for years and I will keep watching. thank you.
I believe for most people who just want a tablet for media consumption and playing the occasional game, the iPad Air will serve them perfectly. I bought the iPad Air because I had the 6th generation base iPad and just wanted an upgrade. I have ProMotion in my iPhone 13 Pro and I don’t really miss it on iPad. The iPad Pro has ProMotion, Face ID, the LiDAR and wide angle camera as the only real differences compared to the Air, unless you want the 12.9” Pro. I love my Air, and I don’t regret not getting the Pro.
Hi there. U sound very knowledgeable abt techs. So, I'm a 3rd med student and I have an android s22 and a windows laptop. I'm looking to get an ipad Air but a frnd suggested a samaung tab. Which 1 do u think is best for writing and school work?
Love the intro of the price ladder breakdown. Apple has been doing that for years with the storage capacity, just makes sense they branched it off to other parts of their devices.
I like how you over the years moved from classic review (camera and stuff) to complex analyzis and theories about products and different market strategies.
I love how your reviews and content in general are evolving into video essays, such an important contribution to talk about more than just specs and performance!
The 13 inch M1 Pro's speaker experience is astonishing for me--surprisingly superior to any iPad I've experienced previously. This audio comes to the fore when simply watching content while reclining with the big Pro on my chest... the stereo experience is there, but on top there seems to be something quite surprising and almost 'spatial' about the big M1 Pro's audio. An unexpected pleasure on top of the significant performance of the M1 processor.
The reason to still go for the iPad Pro 12.9 is if Dolby Vision and HDR are important to you, as well as the larger size, resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.
I believe the cutoff for developers is using up to 6GB so background processes don’t rank the device, so yes 16GB is overkill, but they also have a full M1 processor as well. My assumption has always been a setup for “pro” iOS apps, or possibly deployment of MacOS but Apple has been explicit with not wanting to do that so who knows…
I've been going back and forth between the two for weeks. The one benefit that was able to push me to get the Pro, was the screen being 20% brighter at 600 nits vs 500 nit of the Air
The 120Hz ProMotion display is the dealbreaker though. It makes the iPad experience SO much better (writing notes, playing games, and general UI smoothness)
The dealbreaker is iPad OS. They need to stop castrating those iPads with the stupid restrictive software. It's the only reason why the iPads still cannot replace a laptop. Just because Apple wants to sell us two devices instead of one.
@@HuyV why would they cannibalize their own product line? Those who needs the extra functionalities of a laptop can just buy a MacBook. That option is available
Its so true with the pricing. I was interested in buying an ipad earlier this year and the most affordable one that could cater my needs was the 2020 ipad air with A14. But it had only 64 gb storage. So I had to pay an extra amount for the 256 gb one which is the only other option. But with a very slightly more amount I could get an ipad pro with M1 chip and 128 gb storage. I was very convinced for that product but then I realised that in no time I had gone way too over my budget so I decided to wait for the new ipad air launch so that the old one gets cheaper. But now I am more confused.
get a Galaxy TabS7+ as an open boxed item from a trusted seller on ebay. Save literally hundreds of dollars and get a far far better tablet/software than the best the crapple has ever offered. And if youre LoCkeD iN CrAppLe'S eCoSySteM, you're crapple's abuse victim. And you could do the exact same thing for your phone AND desktop/laptop. Free yourself and learn what youve been missing.
I bought mine last week. It is an amazing device. Love it. Because there is an issue in China the stock is running low in here. I had to satisfy with the grey colour. If any students are looking for it get it. It is worth the money.
Love the way you took us up the price ladder when adding features. It’s clear that the Pro is for the pro users. The base model Pro picked up with a better screen for video editors and graphic artists, thunderbolt for those need to transfer info like videographers, photographers, and music creators, and more storage which they will all need due to the massive amounts of content they create.
Just like you, I was also mislead into thinking that the iPad pro M1 is a true creators device... the "gold standard" RUclipsrs across the board call it. I can tell you by experience, this was a complete waste of money. Not only is the device completely and utterly (yes, I said COMPLETELY) useless waste of space, I haven't been able to use it for even the smallest of design tasks like creating professional grade icons. Still use my laptop for all my core work. (Yes, I have the pencil) The iPad is a glorified ebook and comic book reader WITHOUT ANY good free reading/cbr viewing apps. It's a glorified movie viewing app... oh but even VLC is buggy and the UI of Vlc is way off. The os if was designed by a 5 year old kid who uses a phone would have been better. I am pretty sure that Apple hires their UI people from arkham and their sole purpose is to piss off the users. Over a thousand bucks down the fckn drain.
@@mohnishsapra2247 I have a friend that designs everything on his iPad Pro. He uses a software called Affinity. It has export support for many industry standard formats.
His example about price ladder does not apply in "expensive" products though. If the products are cheap like a few dollars then it is true because it does not cost much to feel "average" but when you are talking about a few hundreds and more it is completely wrong. It has always been wrong in iPad line where the cheapest iPad outsells the others. Same with the MacBook, AirPods, iPhone. So even though it seems relevant but unfortunately it does not apply at all.
something to think about is that prices differ kind of wildly outside the USA. the iPad Air (256GB) is R$ 8.399,00 and the iPad Pro 11'(256GB) R$11.546,00 in Brazil - which is a pretty huge jump (about $600 USD) which makes the iPad Air so much more accessible (and only R$895,00 (USD$ 175) more than the iPad Mini, even though it has the M1 chip.
For me, I bought the Air 5, and I honestly don’t regret the purchase. The IPad Pro has the ProMotion, extra camera, 4 speakers, and Face ID, but none of those features I NEED for what I use the iPad for. I got a 256GB + Cellular version and it checks all the boxes I want and need. Not to mention that it will get updates for years to come.
tbh if only they gave it a Pro motion display, it would be a serious buy considering that a lot of the competition puts a 120Hz screen on their regular consumer flagship.
I feel like if I were to upgrade from my air2, I’d be perfectly happy with the 60hz screen. I’d be missing out on nothing, and still getting the laminated screen that spoiled me as my first iPad purchase. For real, this was what the pawn shop had at a price I was willing to pay, and I lucked out with a fantastic device, whose special laminated screen was a feature I didn’t know about until weeks afterward. I thought all iPads had it because it was simply fantastic.
Yea I don't care either and for art and the pencil everyone says that 60hz is fine. It's not a gaming PC. The marketing trick he explained isn't what got me into the air 5. I was already shopping for air 4's for digital art (that laminated screen among other things) when the 5 dropped at the same MSRP. Double the RAM and other small improvements which do matter for art made the minimal price difference worthwhile.
The reason they brought the m1 to the iPad air, I think, is an economy of scale thing. They invested a lot in R&D and by selling a lot of m1 devices, they can lower the cost enough that it makes sense from an economic stand point, even if it nudges people to buy the cheaper device. They still earn more by the cumulative effect cost has on each m1 device sold.
Honestly, I have the 64gb Air 4 and storage has never been an issue for me. I mostly use it for digital art and school notes that are synced with OneNote, so I hardly need any space. Yes, if you're doing video production or photo work like Marques, you need more. But for some iPad users, 64gb is still worth considering.
For me the differentiating factor is storage. My wife is a photographer and does a lot of her initial post work on the iPad when out in the field. With a 52 megapixel sensor and RAW format photos (plus occasional 4k videos), 265GB max on the Air doesn't go too far
I love how you incorporate real practical info in your reviews. The price difference of a new air vs the pro here in PH is only about $20.. so that's definitely going to be worth the extra cost.
When I first heard about LIDAR on the new iPad, I remember wanting that feature and tried to sell my current iPad pro. I ended up not selling it. 4 months later, I totally forgot about LIDAR. I never needed it, i just wanted it.
As a 2021 12.9" iPad Pro owner, I would still select the iPad Pro over the iPad Air due to screen technology and 120 Hz Pro Motion along with the larger storage options available.
@@pokiblue5870 The other difference between the 512 GB and the 1TB model is the ram,512 GB model has 8 GB of ram while the 1TB model has 16 GB of ram.I chose the 512 GB model due to the fact that I have a high specification Dell XPS15 laptop along with my Intel Core i9 10 core 4K 32” dual display workstation with a 3080 Ti.I use my iPad Pro to edit photos and videos from my cameras and drones along with sketching some of my engineering designs. If the iPad Pro will your primary device then I would suggest getting the 1TB model.
I love how honest and helpful your commentary on Apple products is. Not to knock other RUclips reviews, but you can often tell that they're being overly cautious in their reviews, where as you say it as you see it. Very refreshing.
I think if I hadn’t experienced the Pro Motion display, I’d probably want the new Air or new Mini. Yes the Pro has a reason to exist but the differences are getting smaller and smaller. Love the more pronounced color on the new Air though. Great vid!
I personally would still always go with the Pro. Because of FaceID. And when you don't look at the M1 iPad Pros, you can get a new iPad Pro 2020 for much less and still get an overall better iPad imo.
I love how they didn't even change the design and it’s already popular but its soooo much faster than the last model, I am impressed by the performance of the M1!
It's absolutely insane just how powerful the M1 is in such a small form factor. I have the old iPad Air 2 and the Samsung Tab S8 Ultra and I love them both for various reasons so I won't be picking up this tablet but if they stuck the M1 in an iPad Mini I'd buy it in a heart beat.
Good points with the price ladder! However, I have some disagreements. The thing is, for $50 more (total $799) you get an iPad Pro with 128 gb storage but for $750, you get an iPad Air with the same M1 with twice the storage (256 gb). That’s the actual comparison. If you’re looking to get the air but want more storage, you can get the 256 gb version for less than the 128 gb pro. That’s still a better deal. The pros that have up to a terabyte of storage are a lot more expensive than the air and it’s not a comparison. If you need that much storage, you wouldn’t be considering an air in the first place. And the 13 inch pro is way more expensive as well. Again, if you want a 13 in iPad, then you wouldn’t be considering the air. Still, I think it’s great that you bring this up and highlight this. As stated in another post, few reviewers talk about pricing structures and the company compelling (or tempting) you to upgrade. Thanks for your reviews!
I also own the m1 ipad Pro 11 and i have been using it for the last 6-7 months and the performance is not just same but better, the battery life is also same and if apple would give us some better software features with it then it can easily survive 10-12 years (with maybe a battery change) just due to the sheer power of m1
@@allbasiliskcodm236 you're totally right. I bought few months ago my first MacBook Air with m1. This is absolutely all what I need for my tasks. Fantastic battery, best performance... this MacBook is forever... new battery and another 10 years 😀
Nice video, not sure if you mentioned pro has 128gb compared to 256gb on the air in that price range you highlighted, which is a factor that can sway people to the air - not having to worry at all about memory, and while it's a useful comparison, if people are coming from a base ipad and have never used a pro, then pro comparisons don't mean much. I've never had pro motion and even knowing about it doesn't want to make me go for a pro over an air. For some people the air is a logical upgrade from a base model. Touch ID better than face for me, speakers are better on the pro obviously, but I also use headphones a lot and bluetooth speakers. What it comes down to for me, is having 256gb of storage, rather than half that on the pro with a better screen and pro motion (which I have never used before anyway). You don't miss what you never had.
I'm a retired casual user and this has been the most helpful talk on which iPad to buy. You are very good at explaining the pro's and con's between the iPad's ...... I will be buying the Air -Thank You
The price ladder concept is amazing. Although putting M1 in iPad Air contradicts the ladder theory. However, iPad Air is now more attractive to the low-budget user who initially planned to buy the iPad. Since the iPad delivery date is usually more than a month while the Air is just a week or so. My point is availability is another critical factor in the purchase decision.
im debating on getting the air, instead of the Ipad the price difference is there, but USB-C Gen 2 pen M1 ridiculously overkill still overall better display tech. thats kinda it, i would mostly use it for Schoolwork and streaming media so i would not really need the space. so im fine with their default configurations. i was never so tempted to go UP the ladder then before. still doesnt beat the IPad price to performance, but i really dont think that apple is trying to sell you a dowgrade for a pro user. see as Marques said, Pro buyer will still most likely go for a pro. but they sure make the middle option viable now. instead of 1 year ago where you either went price to performance or High end.
I wouldn’t spend the extra money on the screen, but I would’ve spent the extra money for the speakers. I own an iPad mini fifth generation and second generation and I brought the six generation primarily for the freaking speakers
You can get the best of both worlds if you go for Apple refurbished. You got a new chassis, a new battery identical warranty. And you don't get the m1 chip but I don't really see what you can do with it that you can't already do with the a14. At least not on iPad OS.
This pricing model actually does make sense to me. Considering a tablet fits in line between a computer and phone, I believe more people could justify getting a tablet when they already have a computer and phone if they believe it still has premium features for a "deal" while also being far better than the standard model. Very interesting video 😌
Nothing will ever make me feel the way I did when I got the 2018 ipad pro. Nobody had seen that design and with the new pencil I felt so ahead of the pack when it came to art. The innovation in that product was soooo good though that it seems to be written straight across the board. My ipad is perfect but because I got the 64gb I am kicking myself years later for not having more space. I've been going back and fourth trying to decide if I should upgrade or wait for the next updated ipad pro with m2?!!
I’d say maybe try hold out one more year, it can be tough to know when to pull the trigger again but I’m sure your iPad still performs incredibly well but yeah a shame about the storage
I'm glad my 2018 iPad Pro has still held up well with the times. I've been using it for school the past 3-4 years and I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. Plus the Logitech case for the 2018 series iPad is better than the newer one imo.
Great video as always, it’ll be interesting to revisit when the new iPads Pro come out and the 11in has mini-led display and probably an M2. Then it’ll feel a true upgrade over the Air
You do such an amazing job with your videos. I love how you talk about the business strategy and try to figure out Apple’s market approach. This was far more interesting to watch than the standard “iPad M1 Air review” video. Thank you for all that you do!
Having 256 gb @749 is a much better deal for me than having 128 gb @ 899. The pro motion is something I won’t miss because I’ve never had it. Plus the Air comes in purple💜
@@skewddom685jap buying the pro because of this reason. Doesn’t make sense to buy the air even it they got some cool colors. Orderd the pro today on Amazon for 817€ 🙃
And then, you dont have a smart cover to let the pink show… I dont get why they are selling this smart folio shit only, except for maybe hiding the protruding camera… this actually sold me to the iPad 2018 and its still rolling. However, I habe given up on a smart cover for any future advanced iPad, because they wont fit the better models with even camera modules anymore…
Yeah, I think you expressed this perfectly. I still want a new iPad, and here comes Apple with another option that makes me confused on which one to get.
David, another RUclipsr, kinda lines up with MKBHD. If you need that pencil and 120hz screen, the Pro is worth it. I'm not an Apple user, so it's confusing to me too
I really appreciate how you explained this. I'm an artist using a refurbished 2nd generation iPad Pro 12.9in 256GB with the 1st gen Apple pencil. I got that because I thought I was going to use Procreate as my main drawing tool instead of Photoshop CC. After 2 years of using the iPad Pro, that was not the case. I only used it for sketches that I imported into Photoshop & basically used the iPad for everything I didn't feel like using my phone for. So I'm considering the new iPad Air because of that. I figured since I have an iMac, a 22in pen display & a MobileStudio Pro that I primarily use, why shell out all that money for features on another device I'm not going to use every day? I definitely don't mind the "downgrade."
Great vids Marques. One advantage of the iPad pro that flies under the radar - if you choose the 1TB or 2TB storage option you're actually getting an M1 chip with 16GB unified memory. This option isn't offered on the iPad air.
Great intro. Liked the analogy mentioned between buying beer and an ipad. Kudos to the team for going the extra mile to make us understand the purchasing pattern of consumers.
Apple legit got me. I was going to go with an Air last year, but 64gb absolutely wasn't enough for me. By the time I jumped to a 256gb Air I was in the price range of a 128gb Pro. But since I was already spending this much money I mine as well jump up to a 256gb Pro with an Apple Pencil and a $200 case/keyboard >.
Thanks for highlighting the pricing strategy that Apple does with their product line. I personally had this very dilemma when I was buying a new iPad. Eventually, I ended up buying the 2022 iPad Air with M1 chip, 64GB storage with 5G. For most people, I guess 64GB wouldn’t be enough, but for me as a hobbyist musician who records and produce music videos solely on my iPad for over a year now, 64GB is more than enough since I transfer all of my materials to an external HDD after finishing a project (music and video project). Having said that, I don’t really have many games on my iPad, rather, I use the iPad as my personal computer for setting up reminders, reading books, creating documents, presentations, and spreadsheets for my day time job, writing journals, taking notes, emails, watching online videos (RUclips, Netflix, etc), for editing photos, social media, etc. Truly, the iPad has evolved from a consumption device, to an actual productivity tool. And with iPadOS 16 coming very soon, the M1 iPad user experience with multi-tasking and full screen support for external display, will make the iPad Air 5 will be enhanced.
Dude, you have really helped me out. I was initially going to go for the air, but since I realized that the 11 inch pro has a better performance, I decided that I was going to go for the pro. I’m happy that I went for this decision because the quality is amazing.
I'm surprised at how objective this review was. I personally feel that Apple should have lowered the prices of both the iPad Mini and the iPad Air by $50, and just add the improved selfie camera to the air. It would justify the price of the pro, and get more people to buy the Air. What apple did was a terrible choice, imo.
I almost wish i had the pro just because it is slightly faster but I upgraded from a 9th gen iPad and the 5th gen i pad air is already such a big upgrade in every way
@@christophershanklin112 I use mine all the time now. I got the Magic Keyboard and now for stuff I’d usually have to get me lap top out for I don’t because I can just set it on that and it’s so much easier and faster

I know this is an old video, but I want to say something about iPad Pro vs Air. And that is notetaking. Both of them support Apple Pencil, but since the Pro has a 120 Hz display, it is so much better for note taking than the Air can be. I have first hand experience with this, since I used to daily a Microsoft Surface Go. Now, Surface vs iPad is a different conversation, but the Surface Pen vs Apple Pencil, I have to give it to the Surface. It is so much nicer in feeling than the hard feeling that the iPad has. But what is much much better on iPad Pro than the Surface is the fact that the screen itself is so much nicer. The iPad has a higher pixel density, which really helps as tiny details on the pencil’s stroke as much better captured. And also the higher refresh rate is insanely better when it comes to the responsiveness of whatever you are writing showing up in the screen. It may sound like a nitpick, but there is a real tangible difference there. So the iPad Air has a lower screen resolution than the Pro, and a lower refresh rate. If you are looking at these devices for note taking with a stylus, I would always go with the high refresh rate, higher pixel density option. If note taking is not even a consideration for you, then go with whichever you want.
I love that you go through the effort to research best purchasing strategies for consumers. You really go above and beyond to make the best content that educates the masses. Thank you Marques!
MKBHD, thanks for bringing this back in front of us. I think we all realize the pricing ladder, but it's extremely easy to shove it to the back of our minds. Thanks for being real.
To me, It's all really about that pro-motion, because it makes so much difference with daily usage, especially if you've it before. I would've really hoped for A15 iPad air with 120hz screen instead of the m1 60hz screen
I just bought the iPad Air today with an 2nd gen Apple Pencil. Needed a device with a lot of storage for notes, lecture recordings, files, and basic stuff such as surfing the net or watching videos. Would’ve gone for the iPad Pro 128 gb if I were to switch over to iPad for drawing but I already use a drawing tablet + Clip Studio Paint on my laptop so I decided otherwise. If it weren’t for the extra storage in the iPad Air 256 gb, I would’ve bought the iPad Pro 128 gb.
After owning the M1 iPad Air here are the issues I’ve had - swipe down issues with keyboard gestures - Apple Pencil losing connection - so far no good keyboard cases - business suite and most all social media apps seem laggy. - I don’t seem to actually use it as a tool for work with multiple issue within email for apps like gmail, Dropbox, google drive, etc… - no easy way to convert pics or videos to other formats - Doesn’t feel fast at all. In fact feels slower than my older iPad with a more older, inferior processor, and less memory.

Even the ipad air 2 runs great, fast. This M1 Air is literal overkill. I am still using my ipad air 2 for 7 years. It will run even more. I can't even imagine how long this will run
Still using my iPad Air 1 that I bought seven years ago (late 2014). I got £50 off standard price because the Air 2 had just come out and they wanted to clear out the old stock. I see no reason to buy a new one - this one still does everything I need.
That introductory pricing section of this video is essentially the "nudge" theory by Daniel Kahneman: people always react to changes (or prices, in the context of this video) in terms of gains and losses, rather than maximizing utility. Fantastic! 👌
I recently purchased the iPad Air 5th generation, and overall, I'm quite pleased with it, giving it 4 stars. This tablet offers a fantastic blend of performance, portability, and display quality. Its M1 chip ensures smooth multitasking and handles demanding tasks effortlessly. The Liquid Retina display is vivid and crisp, making content consumption a joy. However, I must mention that the absence of Face ID for unlocking is a bit disappointing, especially in an era where biometric security is becoming the norm. While Touch ID is reliable, Face ID would have been a welcomed addition. Despite this drawback, I still recommend the iPad Air 5th gen to potential buyers who prioritize performance and a great display over facial recognition. It's a versatile device suitable for both work and entertainment, and I believe it offers good value for the price.
As someone who's never been able to replace my laptop with an iPad due to my specific usage, I've been nudged down to the Air since generation 3. I really want ProMotion but not enough to justify the cost at all, because the iPad is mostly a minor part of my time and is a consumption device, not a creation device.
I've been eyeing the iPad Pro to replace my 2014 MBPr since I really don't need a laptop at this point for my use anymore, just want a daily driver type thing that isn't my desktop but bigger than my phone. The M1 Air would be fine if it had enough storage. 64gb is too small, 256gb is really a bit small as well but could make it work. However, a Pro for $50 more is appealing, but then it is only 128gb. Going to 256gb is $899 or 512GB is $1099. Then I am debating on whether to just get the MBA at that point, esp when figuring in keyboard price for the Pro (or iPad Air). So I ended up just figuring I will stick with my current MBPr for now, ha. A 512GB iPad Air at $899 would have been real appealing for me, which maintains the $200 cheaper than a Pro pricing.

The M1 iPad Pro 11" I ordered came on the day of Apple's spring event, and as you can guess, I was a little pissed off when I found out about the M1 Air. I don't use a tablet for much more than web surfing, social media, Cricut work, RUclips, emails, and the occasional game or two. I picked the Pro model because I wanted something that wasn't going to hiccup at all during my time on any of those tasks, and I knew the M1 was going to deliver that. My current tablet at the time was a Samsung S6 Lite, which was a great tablet but was lacking the horsepower I wanted (plus I'm making the transition BACK to Apple this year). Needless to say, I'm taking back the iPad Pro and getting the M1 Air. It just makes sense.
It frustrates me that Apple still uses 60hz displays in their base products and I think you are correct, it is a way to push you to the "pro" variant. Nowadays 120hz displays are almost a standard on any device costing more than a few hundred dollars.
I agree with your statement, mostly. In the tablet market, Apple doesn't have strong competition. Obviously, they don't feel the need to add 120hz in their air lineup to sell. Sucks how Apple doesn't add 60hz and 120gb options. They threw me off and I am hoping Samsung comes in strong for the next few years with stable and good app support.

@@donaldducko6580 a large amount of iPad users only use the tablet for videos and consuming content. For them there is no difference between iPad and Samsung - the galaxy is better because the actual screen, the thing that matters, is actually nice looking and modern. Most popular apps on iPads are Google apps anyway haha, Google Maps is the no.1 used app on iPad. The Google Docs suite is also hugely popular. There is no difference on galaxy. Android tablets used to suck, but the new Samsung one is getting great. With the upcoming 12L software for tablets and folding phones, android takes advantage of larger screens.
I believe Apple put in the M1 chip to make it more future proof. I find this step a bit excessive. But still, the iPad AIr 5 is a very good choice for most people. and who can do without 120hz promotion. will be really happy with the ipad air 5.
There's no such this as future proof. You cannot have "future proof" and base model is 64gb. And no micro SD support. And still usning the Apple first gen pencil.
Amazing.... he charges people to put in blue couches when he reviews a blue tablet. Ground breaking. Ps I rate him but basic colour coordination with his budget should not be applauded
I am currently in "iPad Choice Hell" In the span of less than a month, I've had a 12.9" Pro M2, a mini 6, an 11" Pro M2 and now I'm back to considering the mini 6 because its "smol, cute and purple." I love love love the pro motion but I don't really even use the iPad Pro much so do I even need something so powerful for as little as I use it? Top it all off, I bought a max spec (without considering custom builds) Macbook Pro 16" w/M1 Max. I want something that sits perfectly between my iPhone 14 Pro Max and my 16" laptop. The colors also got me torn. I am a huge fan of blue an in some ways I'd almost rather have the blue iPad Air M1 than to have a drab space gray Pro. If you can help please do lol. Great video!
I'm going off trying to draw some conclusions based on your comment, trying to elucidate you a bit. For what i can tell your biggest worry is the color of the ipad which is fair enough. It also seems you're not in the market the fully spec'ed out because you don't need it all, so there's really no point in thinking about the Pro. If you have a MBP maxed out which I assume you need for your work/hobby/just because you really want to (again, fair enough). You already answered your question yourself "I don't really even use the iPad Pro much so do I even need something so powerful for as little as I use it?". You would only buy it if you need it. My answer? Get the Air. Reasons: - You already have a full spec MBP, no point in getting a Pro - You have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, going towards the mini isn't really "sitting between both MBP and iPhone" in my opinion. That's my 2c, obviously at the end of the day if you feel you need an iPad Pro you can always get a colorful case to go along. Hope I helped
I had this impression that the M1 chip Macs perform better with more internal storage (like everything kind of working together more, getting better memory performance w more storage, etc. But I could be completely wrong) I was wondering if getting an ipad with an M1 chip, but with low storage ie 64GB, would reduce performance. Because in my head I would just get an ipad with lowest possible storage, and then use USB flash drives or other ways of offloading files, deleting and redownloading big apps since I tend to play a game or use an app for a while and then not use it for a chunk of time... and be totally fine with that. But if it were to perform less quickly due to having less storage or have some serious issues that would obviously make me want the higher storage or maybe just consider the ipad air 4 over the 5, if that makes sense.
One small thing I've found is that this is the first possible iPad I know to spell the name on the back. My 2020 iPad Pro only says "iPad" on the back-- love this blue more tbh than my grey Pro
The pricing ladder angle has led to an interesting dilemma for me: I’d wondered if I’d upgrade my air 3 for this one, but it’s still working well enough for a while longer… and so if the pricing structure remains the same for the next iPad Pro 11”, I may as well wait slightly longer to upgrade to that and get a newer model with higher specs rather than upgrading now to either of the current options
The iPad Pro is old enough to be discounted. So you can get a Pro for $100 more than an Air. You get a better screen, a better camera, better speakers, more storage, and a Thunderbolt port for a 100 bucks. No reason to buy the Air.
@@gepal7914 Yep iPad AIR 64gb is Stupid. What you gonna do with all that power and No storage 😅. And when you think to Buy the 256gb for 750$🤣🤣 , you might as well buy the Pro. I mean the fast screen alone makes a World of Difference 🤩, Can't imagine the smoothness while drawing on it. I'm using 120 hz smartphone and whenever I use a 60hz screen , It's just feels So Laggy and Sluggish 🤮
I’ve had this for around a month since the 4th of November, and I can tell you, IT IS GREAT! It is an overkill iPad but it leaves a lot of room for the future, as a 32gb user, upgrading to 256gb makes me feel more free!
I can’t believe you went for a 256 gb instead of putting just a tad more and have an m2 chip plus everything better than the air. The storage is meaningless with idevices, people make choices anyways, of what to keep and what is useful and what’s to throw away. Unless you are a professional then you probably need lots of storage but even then, a professional will buy the best for the money that’s why if you were you would have bought an iPad Pro m1 chip, which at the time of the release was the same price as the pro m2 is marketed at today anyways. For 100$ or less you can also buy an external storage and plug it in your iPad anyways so you definitely chose wrongly. Inbetween the 9th gen and the air the 9th gen is better value because it’s 300$ less than the air for the same storage and has a powerful A13 chip. The only downside to the 9th gen is the design but if people can go beyond that then it’s a smarter choice. The comparison is inbetween the pro m1 and the air and the pro m1 still wins, unfortunately it’s not available anywhere on the market today and therefore the only option left is inbetween the pro m2 and the air. Again, the air loses. Everything « air » with Apple is to be avoided because it’s priced very high but it’s actually weaker in every way.
@@fredlada1634 Looking at a performance 1:1, you are correct. But there are always intangibles. Especially if this person was a professional. Which also holds true for storage, storage is far from meaningless for idevices, as you called them. Consider the fact that we have creative professionals that need to travel and at times won't have access to connections for days. They still need to work. To the same people, not having to carry an external drive is worth a lot. Simplicity. And there is a price difference even if only $150 and some people, especially in finance will also look at it in a cost perspective. Why pay more when this device fulfill all needs of person X? That would be a bad business decision if there is no increased productivity or income coming out of it. Basically, would the added $150 bring in more money tot he business than the cheaper Air would do? It's not always as easy as "performance is better". "iPad 9th gen has more value than Air" I disagree. "The only downside to 9th gen is trhe design" - false. The screen is smaller. Different connector. Only supports 1st gen pen (big difference for artists). Does not support all keyboard variants. Big difference in screen quality, also important to some people. No video decode encode engine. Some examples for you. So please stop flaming people for their choices when there is so much more to it. It's fucking stupid.
im with you on that, just the 60Hz display alone its a deal breaker for me, i have the 2020 11' iPad Pro and i really love the 120 Hz Promotion display, it makes the iPad a lot smoother and faster, when i play with the iPad air it feels so much slower and i can't go back to a 60 Hz display now, so doesnt matter if the new iPad has the M1 chip inside i rather keep my 2020 IPad Pro , which its powerful enough for me.
Oh... I can say it one way... When you get on 120hz, you will understand and never look back at the 60hz... I am telling this to those people who are like: "120hz had not that much of a difference between the 60hz..." I was one of those people and when I got a phone with 120hz screen... Oh man... What would be like using 120hz promotion from apple.. it would be even better.
Great review! The new iPad Air definitely caught my attention. Thanks for calling out the storage issue. I would definitely need more than 64GB, so bumping up to 256GB is the only other option with the Air. To get the same storage on the iPad Pro you're going from $750 up to $900. I wonder if I would see $150 in value with the promotion screen and camera? Not sure. I'll have to try them out. Thanks for sharing the spec differences because I feel like I know what to look for in person now.
In addition to better rear cameras and 120hz promotion.......You also get a slightly bigger screen, face id (a pro or con depending on the person)..... Lidar for more accurate measurement, faster auto focus, and 3d mapping, quad speakers, so stereo audio in either orientation, also thunderbolt. (M1 in ipad air doesn't have thunderbolt just 10GB/s USB).....All for an extra $150 for the same 256GB or an Extra $50 for the 128GB version which most people would be okay with..It's just that 64GB is just too small.........So Yes, In my opinion the pro version is worth the extra $50 to $150.......But I would wait for this fall......If the Air has the M1......The Ipad Pro 11 will be getting the beastly M2 chip....and a Mini-led display. The M1 is 5nm launched alongside and based off the A14 Bionic in 2020.....If the m2 is based on the A15 bionic launched in 2021....then it will be more efficient at 5nm+ and it will have 7 to 8% faster Single core performance......15 to 20% faster multicore.....50 to 55% faster GPU, 50% faster LPDDR5 memory bandwidth.......But odds are, the M2 will be 2 generational jumps....and will be based on the upcoming A16 Bionic at 4nm....and will absolutely destroy anything android has to offer.....The 4nm 2022 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship still barely competes with the 2018 A12X.......but the price of the 11" Ipad might go up though......decisions...decisions.
Well the pro starts at 128 gb which I think is probably plenty for most people, plus it has all the other bells and whistles the air doesn’t have. If you have to have 256 gb it might be a tough choice but if 128 is enough I think it’s an easy choice between the two. I just upgraded from the air 2 this weekend to the pro 11. I went to a micro center to compare the two in person and it was the speakers and the 120hz screen that sold me on the pro. I tend to hold onto my devices for a while so I wanted the most I could get for the price and only having more storage in the air wasn’t enough to get me to pay the same amount of money for it
My take, the m1 in the air is a bait. I don’t think it nudges anyone down, but it might drive people in as new customers might be tempted to try out the m1 paying the smallest price so far. Once they’re considering the idea of buying a air they will also consider the pro, which wasn’t on their radar all together in the first place. Therefore the ladder
I’m like you. I own an iPad Pro and I won’t downgrade to an Air due to the extras the Pro provides. More storage, 120 Hz, better display, the LiDAR Scanner, the insanely great 4 speakers and also the 5 built in studio quality microphones. All reasons for me to use my current Pro and also the reasons to buy a new Pro eventually. That will probably be when Apple announces the successor to the M1 Pro.
The colors in the Air lineup are so cool, I wish we could get that in the Pro ones, I'm tired of always getting the space grey because they're the only ones available.
I’m one of the people that would have paid for the Pro but instead opted to go with the Air instead. I bought it purely as an entertainment platform for Netflix and light gaming (OSRS). Not interested in heavy gaming. Saw the refresh rate as a bonus for me as I consider battery life as one of the most important aspects of buying. The efficiency of the M1 along with the 60hz refresh meaning an extended battery life is perfect for what I want. I don’t care for the camera, or missing out on Lidar or the two extra speakers or even a lot of storage space since most of my use will be streamed VOD. Saved myself £200
The storage discussion is an interesting one, having an Apple One subscription has made me less inclined to opt for the largest capacity devices as I have 2TB available to me in the cloud. How do you feel that sways your POV of the "$50 step up the value ladder" as opposed to the $200 step up if device storage isn't that big a deal for you? Coming from an 2020 iPad Air 64GB owner and I was honestly shocked at how much I like it considering it wasn't the Pro device I originally wanted.
All I can say is the 120hz meke the pro so mucher nicer to use. And if you use it at night and want a big device then the mini led on the big pro makes even much more of a difference
Same but my iCloud storage is only off site back up. If your files don’t exist in two separate places, it might not exist at all after a failure. I need the storage as the primary place my data exists (downloading my files to a hard drive fulfills the old 3-2-1 advice for file storage, you’ll never appreciate paranoid IT advice better until after a house fire or server failure)
@@vysharra Yeah if I was actually considering the buy seriously, I would think on what I actually value most and decide if I'm willing to buy something at all. Good sound and the screen - your main point of interaction. Big value. If they forced low storage with that one, I could live with that too. On the other hand any of you who aren't really fussed about the display being cutting edge and are happy with the still very decent display. Low cost makes sense, you've options to make the storage work.
I think it all comes down to software, I got ipad pro, air, mini, regular, right now I just have the regular one, because the most use my tablet gets is drawing and graphics arts. since the regular is compatible with the pencil to me that's the biggest jump in utility, I don't game in tablets but I imagine something like stardew valley should be fantastic but that game won't benefit from 120hz displays or m1 chips, there is not enough apps that can take advantage of those. also with the cheapest ipad I can be more careless I don't have case nor screen protector and after many years it has zero scratches compare to the pro I had it was always in a case inside a sleeve... that anxiety is not for me :D
I've been looking out for a good drawing tablet lately to try digital art and I think I've found it. The 64 GB of storage and 8 for ram sound like more than enough with Procreate.
@@madruga2112 The higher 120 Hz means that you can respond twice as fast to your inputs because the screen is putting out double the frames in one second. That’s twice the visual information, not something to sniff at. It also means the screen and thus Procreate responds twice as fast. It could speed up your artwork and your creative process substantially. However, you CAN adapt and handle 60 Hz just fine, many people who grew up with 60 Hz displays have picked up habits and whatnot that allow them to maximize what they can get out of the fewer frames. So those people CAN stick with 60 Hz just fine. They will still get a boost from 120 Hz, but it’s not a deal-breaker for them. That’s my understanding of the matter, good luck either way! Also, someone mentioned that the 1 TB and 2 TB storage options of the iPad Pro increase the RAM to 16 gigs. That means your paintings can be that much more complex before the device starts to struggle. If the price bump is worth that extra headroom in the memory, that might be worth using. Plus, the iPad Pro port supporting Thunderbolt means more flexibility in connecting the device to other devices, I think you can plug a DSLR camera straight into the iPad for reference photos or photo editing, no need for a PC or MAC middleman to facilitate the transfer (I could be wrong on that, please double-check).

So the speakers are bigger and louder on the 13 vs 11?

The last I read, apps for iPadOS aren't even capable of using that much RAM or they're limited to a specific amount.

As a 2021 12.9" iPad Pro owner, I would still select the iPad Pro over the iPad Air due to screen technology and 120 Hz Pro Motion along with the larger storage options available.

Lmao A14 was already beast , you won't notice any difference between last one and this , only video rendering is where new one will shine
Thanks for your reviews!
i agree that’s why i got my 256 gb air over the pro. i don’t care about the pro features

Still satisfied with my M1 Ipad Pro 11 inches. I'm gonna give this tablet a lifespan of 5-7 years.

This pricing model actually does make sense to me. Considering a tablet fits in line between a computer and phone, I believe more people could justify getting a tablet when they already have a computer and phone if they believe it still has premium features for a "deal" while also being far better than the standard model. Very interesting video 😌
Yeah but most flagship phones start off with 128 gb now so these tablets should not start with 64 gb
Nothing will ever make me feel the way I did when I got the 2018 ipad pro. Nobody had seen that design and with the new pencil I felt so ahead of the pack when it came to art.

Just got the M1 Air 256gb for $499 and very happy with it
I recently purchased the iPad Air 5th generation, and overall, I'm quite pleased with it, giving it 4 stars.
Is the battery great? i heard that out of all ipads, air is the worst.
Yeah, what is the battery like?

Reasons:
- You already have a full spec MBP, no point in getting a Pro
- You have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, going towards the mini isn't really "sitting between both MBP and iPhone" in my opinion.
But if it were to perform less quickly due to having less storage or have some serious issues that would obviously make me want the higher storage or maybe just consider the ipad air 4 over the 5, if that makes sense.
ram and storage aren't the same thing
One small thing I've found is that this is the first possible iPad I know to spell the name on the back. My 2020 iPad Pro only says "iPad" on the back-- love this blue more tbh than my grey Pro
The level of editing and quality in your videos is stunning maan! You and your team are AMAZING ❤️🙌
The pricing ladder angle has led to an interesting dilemma for me: I’d wondered if I’d upgrade my air 3 for this one, but it’s still working well enough for a while longer… and so if the pricing structure remains the same for the next iPad Pro 11”, I may as well wait slightly longer to upgrade to that and get a newer model with higher specs rather than upgrading now to either of the current options
iPad pro 128 gb is wayyy Better.😚😚
Same over here. Will likely buy a Notebook with Windows before i upgrade my Ipad air 3. Its just so light and slim. Lov it.
It’s the guy with a hyphenated last name for me
I’ve had this for around a month since the 4th of November, and I can tell you, IT IS GREAT!
@@fredlada1634 can you suggest me best tablets that can provide high graphics for games without lagging and with higher storage under 800$
@@Flake52 ipad air 5 with 256gb
@@basicallyedward 120 he's is much more noticeable on a tablet than a phone that being said I still like 120 on my phone
You're not that target demographic
yeah 120hz is something.. when you use it, you'll never back to 60hz 😅 I'm still keeping my 2020 pro 12.9" and still not interested with this air m1
The M1 is 5nm launched alongside and based off the A14 Bionic in 2020.....If the m2 is based on the A15 bionic launched in 2021....then it will be more efficient at 5nm+ and it will have 7 to 8% faster Single core performance......15 to 20% faster multicore.....50 to 55% faster GPU, 50% faster LPDDR5 memory bandwidth.......But odds are, the M2 will be 2 generational jumps....and will be based on the upcoming A16 Bionic at 4nm....and will absolutely destroy anything android has to offer.....The 4nm 2022 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship still barely competes with the 2018 A12X.......but the price of the 11" Ipad might go up though......decisions...decisions.
not “promotion”
@@alysdexia yeah, I know. but you got my point.
I tend to hold onto my devices for a while so I wanted the most I could get for the price and only having more storage in the air wasn’t enough to get me to pay the same amount of money for it
@@jonservo capitalize
My take, the m1 in the air is a bait. I don’t think it nudges anyone down, but it might drive people in as new customers might be tempted to try out the m1 paying the smallest price so far. Once they’re considering the idea of buying a air they will also consider the pro, which wasn’t on their radar all together in the first place. Therefore the ladder
It’s so weird, I was always watching this until I got it. Now I have and I’m just appreciating everything in my life.
The colors in the Air lineup are so cool, I wish we could get that in the Pro ones, I'm tired of always getting the space grey because they're the only ones available.
is there a reason they do this? keep the pro with those 2 arguably boring shades? because why can't they add at least 1 or 2 more shade options :/
They should make the PRO in the same pretty colors as the iPad Air.
64 is enough
I've been looking out for a good drawing tablet lately to try digital art and I think I've found it. The 64 GB of storage and 8 for ram sound like more than enough with Procreate.
Yep m1 chip + 11 inch tablet is only 599$
Thats definitely pro killer
60hz is a deal breaker even for a starter digital artist. if you haven't bought it, buy a refurbished m1 ipad pro
@@deepaknarayan3713 does it really impact that much for painting in procreate?
