This was awesome. After several videos of herb infused olive oil i finally found a tutorial on extracting the oil from the herbs!
You right on that one😂

Hey
Amazingly so my are like .. oh you want oil, let's use some oil to make oil 👁👄👁
OMG! Thank you so much for a simple explanation of how to extract plant oil. Honestly, some of these RUclips videos, people just talk you into a comma, and give you heaps of information you don't need (as ultimately, like home brew, it will be trial and error until you get the right product for yourself personally). Add to that the fact that they speak in another (scientific) language.
Thank you so much for just speaking in a language the average Jolene can understand, and for just getting to the bloody point!
Bravo! :-)
LJY08 "Average Jolene".....love that. Glad to be normal for ya. Please keep hanging out with us, we have fun.....the simple way.
@Maxeotl lol I chuckled
What is the thing inside between two flasks canal
Just talk you into a comma? Wow, what grammar Nazis.
First time seeing how to make essential oils. I thought you provided a clear and detailed understanding for a first time watcher. Thanks. I'm sure there is much more to learn but I appreciate someone who can demonstrate with enough info that will allow anyone to pick up. Well done!
This is exactly what i was searching for. This shows why essential oils are expensive.
The best and most simple explanation on RUclips. Others talk nonstop and others can’t even state the simple. Thanks for the great explanation of the process
Only thing I see that was missed and should be mentioned is that when first starting the procedure, you should fill the oil separator just past the first open tube with distilled water. This will prevent any precious oil from being lost when it rises by going into the hydrosol collector.
Thank u for sharing ur wisdom
Very well presented, clear and concise and you make it look very easy, I was very impressed. Keep up the great work.
+Cory A. Starchuk Thanks Cory
@@LifeBuzzN is this stronger than the drugstore brand?
I’m sorry, but please take this as good advice. You are not extracting enough.. For any type of oil extraction from herbs you should use 100 % ethanol (drinking alcohol) and a Soxhlet extractor. That will save you money in the long run and increase your oil extraction 10 fold 😊
so this isn’t a good method?
Well done. . If you put a vigreux condenser into your setup you can distill that oil infused water in the boiling flask. The vigreux acts as a fractioning column to separate the oil and water
I was always mad at how much terpenes are lost to the hydrosol vs the what comes out in oil. But ive only tried it once, shoving everything together in an alembic. The product was 100% hydrosol with maybe a drop of oil floating on top from maybe 2 pounds of material. not even worth the effort imo as i have little use for the hydrosol. I was always thinking about ways to try to extract the terpenes from the hydrosol. Like maybe adding an oil and shaking it up or adding something to displace the oil or terpenes trapped in the hydrosol.
I think youre right with fractional distillation and possible super cooling the condenser. As the terpenes seem heavily aromatic therefore light and tend to float off at ambient temp. The only use ive found for hydrosol. Which is to leave a pot out or boiling to incense a room.
I want to see more videos about making essential oils! Love this
We appreciate you watching, and will see about getting more vids out. Tk
My wife and other ladies at church are starting to talk about and use essential oils. Good video !
TNridges Spring is right around the corner....Lots of flowers coming....great for oils.
Thank you. A rare, informative video on an atypical process of modern life.
Thanks for watching Eric....that's what our channel is all about.
Whoooo! Great contribution for the average folk very simple yet intricate stuff! We know this oil have a lot of uses thanks for sharing your knowledge very interesting!! Blessings!
Finely found a video that doesn't require chemicals thank you
Have tons of spearmint and peppermint growing in my yard, can't wait to make my oil. Great video.
Stacey Maxwell That mint will take over, for sure. Good luck with the oils.
I’m not sure how I came across this, but I feel like it was for a reason. Thank you for a simple explanation.
Thanks for watching. Hope you've had time to check out the rest of our channel.
Thank you for this. I wanna start my own perfume business and I wanna make my own essential oils. 💖 This video's very helpful. 👍
Awesome awsome!!! My husband fell flat on his face when he saw this.
Thanks for sharing, I always thought the leaf is cook with oil to get the spearmint oil 😄, you’re lucky guy to have a lovely couple to join you for the hobby 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you all the other videos I found involved in the old fashion process of using alcohol
Would be pretty neat. I have alway's had an interest in chemistry and this is an awesome way to demonstrate.
That's a dandy little distiller that you guys have...I may just have to procure one for myself! Nice work!
Tim Brown It was pricey to buy upfront, however, I've been using mine for several years and I'm sure it's paid for itself by now. Those essential oils are expensive.
No reason not like like this vid - well done, I’ve been planing on doing this myself. I am surprised at the amount you got for the short period of time you had it going - I’m all in to getting a distiller now - cheers!
Just loooove watching this over and over
Thanks Tasha.
Thank you! Now I can make some fun oils!
(Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac, Stinging Nettle, Mint, Dandelion, And Sassafras)
I work on a mint farm. This is pretty much how we do it but on a large scale. In our still we have a boiler that came out of a hospital to heat the water.
Dear Svurmny, please could you inform details of oil your farm offered. thanks samega68@yahoo.com
Awesome
50 Minutes???? Woah that takes FOREVER! Anyway such satisfying video ^^
I know this is a lot to ask and this video was 6 years ago, but just in case someone has the time to help me, would you please give me a parts list so I can go buy these items? This whole thing was so fascinating to me. When he first started, it looked like it was going to be very difficult but the way he explained every stage, what each section did and why, I think I'd like to try it. Also, I'm getting into the essential oil thing pretty late in life. I'm just north of 60 and started growing my own herbs but short of what I use in my cooking, I don't know what herbs do what, how I would figure out what temperature to extract them at and how to use each oil I make.
Even if no one helps me, I still think this was a really cool video. His willingness to show each phase was super cool. And even more super cool was having his wife help him.
Thank you for this video. At the very least, your video brought in another fan of the effort.

Really generous of you.
Been looking for this video for months
thats nice, and the water can be used for the plants or other uses , nice. thanks
Thanks, I really wanted to know how. Real essential oils are incredible.
I agree.
It amazing but just don't think that it can cure polio...
@@g2ltt733 Everything has it's limitations.
Wow thank you so much po sor.. This video very helpful for our current business research... Hoping for more video about extraction
Great Job I'm glad I found you...Thanks for your teaching.
Thanks for finding us. Stick around.
Awesome thanks man so was so simple explanation to show people how to extract oil of any herbs really useful tutorial, keep on God bless you :)
So,... the steam heats the oil to a vapor and carries it up and out of the flask? then when you cool it the water and oil vapor condenses out? Cool! That's a lot of work for just a few drops of oil, but it's so concentrated. LIke those few drops equals a pound of leaves? The boiling flask looks like a bunch of tea! I appreciate the value of essential oils a lot more seeing the process! LOL. I love this video! Thumbs Up!
That is excellent.
I look forward to the soap making videos. :-)
cecil6711 Thanks, Soap coming soon.......stayed tuned.
Great video, thanks for linking your setup!
It looks like you are use the mint whole leaf and steam. Try giving it a good hand chop and see how much you get. Love your set up and the whispers.
When you started touching it with your bare hands I thought "What is he doing!?" But then I remembered I'm just allergic to mint and no one else has a problem with it. Nice video
Wow, I'm sorry you have allergies to mint....bummer. Thanks for watching the vid anyways. Take Care-
You could also rotovap the aqueous extract in the 2 necked flask.
If you wrap some fiberglass cloth around your extraction bulb, you will get less oil dripping back into the steam generator and get more oil condensing faster. Signed aka "The Unknown Chemist" VWR and Fisher have it in rolls. I've used a darning needle and fiberglass thread to sew it in place. (I unraveled it from the cloth.) Aluminum foil works too.
This is an amazing configuration! Of course, you've been knocking my socks off with elaborate devices video after video! Fascinating stuff! Great show!
Juanelo1946 You are too kind Juanelo.....I appreciate your continued faithful support. I'll try to continue to knock your socks off.
comments from the woman (wife?) off camera are the best.
great job bud, great lil set up too, AANNDD stunnin garden yall got. blessings from the UK
Thank You Cephas. We're having a great time on our little piece of Heaven. I appreciate you watching from all the way over in the UK. If you haven't already done so, subscribe to keep up with updates. Thanks Again.
Awesome video thank you so much super down-to-earth sounding really cool how you went over it with not a bunch of filler words wish you could be in almost every video I've Ever Needed on this awesome RUclips site hope you make a bunch more appreciate it. talk later
Thanks Dennis
It's steam distillation process
And nice video 👌👌👌👌👌
Thanks

Have you seen the gold recovery from E-scrap vid we shot?.....that will really get them hopping.
That is awesome!! I always wondered how that was done.
Good morning this the most awesome stuff ever. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Cheryl......thanks a bunch.
Thanos: All that for a drop of oil.
That was what he got in the first 15 mins. There is a lot more to go.
he said there’s long way to go. he can extract more oil but he’s dying to take that drops of oil out for us to see
Are you a chemist...I want to make cuticle oil from distillation can u guide me...
Where can I get this distiller or boiler
I have Chocolate Mint that I am going to make tincture from. Can't afford a distiller just for the small amount of my mint.
But you do an Awesome job.
Thank You Becky
way cool !! I never knew how essential oils were extracted
Gloria Maria Ortega Yeah, it's pretty cool stuff. Thanks for tuning in Gloria.
Awesome demonstration!
Thanks

Wow very beautiful I see why oil cost so much. Wonderful job. You should teach a class once a month here in NYC
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the kind words.
Cool! Thank you. What would happen if you just put the plant directly in the boiling water?
Great video guys. I'm trying it out on Melaleuca
Both of you are awesome a well-matched pair. I enjoy your stuff, peace.
You explained perfectly! Thank you so much!
You are very welcome. Tks
Thank you for this interesting video, and your very clear explanation.
You are welcome.
Where can I purchase this equipment to make essential oils for my shop you broke this down so easily and so good I feel comfortable with doing it myself
one thing to try is just pump the pool water to cool the still saves on ice that's how I cool my alcohol still its 250l and runs for about 20 hours straight and barely changes the temp of the pool
That was really cool to watch.. Thank you! ☺💕
Thanks Stella.
Gonna use up as much of the year's leftover mint chocolate mint sinc other herbs this way before winter
Very interesting video. I’m studying how using ethanol soaking of poison ivy and a distillation process like yours, pure uruthiol oil (poison) can be extracted. For scientific purposes only of course
I blow glass and want to make some distillers.. Any suggestions on design, function, or improvements you would want yours to have?
It was very interesting. I loved to watch it.
Thanks
wow! I would love to have a set of my own.
amzn.to/2mlwVzk
absolutely love it I wonder doe were a oils extractor of such magnitude would be bought off the internet for example accurately a website please
amzn.to/2mlwVzk
Behind every good man there's a great woman just as behind every peppermint there's a spearmint 🌱🌿
Yes such a beautiful sight!! Nature is thy medicine. How much was your distillery set and did it all come together
Spearmint Bong!!! YUMMY!!
Good Times.
Mad scientist! ...nice vid... I believe most essential oils on the market are non-organic and of GM crops and then oils extracted using chemicals, since this would be the most profitable way to do things the big boy way.
Vincent Rodriguez Thanks Vincent, you are correct....no GMO's here. Take Care-
You should try to do a experiment to make gasoline from the highest pure mint oil and make some grain ethanol and infuse it together to make the gasoline it be very very awesome to see it happen
Dont forget to fill the sepratory funnel with water prior to extraction and for greater oil yield cooler condensation tube or get a coil just throwing it out
Makes sense. Thank You Sean.
you want to "prime" the final separator by filling it with water first.. otherwise a lot of precious oil will be lost during the process
Yeah I watched a few spoon-fulls drip out into the waste bowl like at 4:12
Great video really informative and easy to follow
Thanks man
You are welcome.
wow that's amazing! Thanks for the post.
Awesome job guys.
I live in the bush in New Zealand and want to extract manuka and kanuka oil.
Could I use this same process.
Thanks Mark.
5:48 That's what my Mrs usually says....... Great vid btw ;-j
You're supposed to fill the separatory up to the overflow
Yeah?
I see that as advertised you are using distillation to separate the oils. but why not use soxhlet extraction? it would provide a higher yield and no water to deal with if you used everclear. then you could use your distillation rig to get 80% of the alcohol back to re use at later time. I haven't tried with spearmint or peppermint, but have with orange peels, eucalyptus leaves, lavender, with great success. keep up the good work.
Water cheaper than to lose 20% of your Everclear?
safer?
William McBride what is soxlet extraction?
The hydrosol is also a marketable product of steam distillation.
Don't get that using ethanol as a solvent.
Ethanol will also add undesirable products, such as chlorophyll into the extraction.
Lee Gato what can you use the hydrosol for? Just curious because I’m planning on buying a similar set up
I have a question ~ is the excess water you call 'toilet water' actually hydrosol or is the coloured boiling water that the essential oils are steaming away from called hydrosol? Thanks for your clear video...
Sorry for my noob question. Can you just boil the mint and distill the vapor? That is to say, is it really necessary to have the mint in a separate vessel above the water?
Yes it’s necessary
@@TheEtbetween Thanks for the reply.
Very fun to watch! Thank you!
+Do It Yourself Herbs Thank you for taking the time to watch.
Nice info. Can u make video of how to make circumin from turmeric powder.if possible.
Wow???? I'd love to do that!!!! Soooo Cool!!!
very good thanks!
Nice work, great info,. Thanks.
Thank you for the video 📹
Very cool! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Great stuff!
Perfect. To the point.
Nice information
ahh now i understand why it's so expensive ==a
wow
simply awesome
Thanks a lot 😊
Thank you for showing us the process, that was generous hearted of you for unselfishly sharing that. Where could I get a contraption like that? Is it bad to have a minute amount of water in the oil because really how can you avoid getting just a tiny amount of water in that little jar?
A sepratory funnel handles that.
Great video man. Thank you
Thanks fro watching.
Good information, thanks.
That is Awesome!
