I'm just starting into this road of making essential oils with my one housemate. Though you do things on a very large scale compared to what we will be doing, you made it very easy to understand the process. Thank you!
From Australia (that other State of the USA...along with Canada) Thank you for sharing...The energy that goes into the process is an important component as some may realise... - We enjoyed the video as a family.
I totally love the way you present each herb. I have been studying with my sis many years. No school either. I have learned more from you than I have ever learned. Thank you so much!!! Keep up the great work you do for all of us!!
(From Carolyn's husband Terry)...I use a 4 day 180 proof alcohol soak ahead of distillation with finely ground product. I believe I get 10 times the essential oil by utilizing this pre-distillation step, but I'm pretty new at this. I have only made salves so far. 1/2 lb of hemp root bulk resulted in 16 oz of essential oil and alcohol mixed. By comparison with input versus output the process leaves about 40% alcohol mixed in the essential oil. This then separates from the salve by constant stirring as it cools. 5 oz of alcohol separated from the salve while stirring . A small amount of the alcohol remained in the roughly 1 quart of salve made....perhaps 1-2 oz per my guesstimate. I'm not upset by the alcohol remaining as I believe that minor residual alcohol in a salve benefits transdermal efficacy.
You have definitely mastered it , gives me information as I have recently become interested in this process, I hope to give it enough time and devotion and reach your level of talent. Cheers
(Terry) Thanks for the video, I like your system. Mine is home use, similar in effect but stainless 6 quart. I use the old copper coil condenser system. Few in essence production seem aware of the benefits of copper's beneficial neutralizing effects. I studied distillation on and off for a couple of years before building my own. That doesn't mean I don't have more to learn of course. All the best in your efforts. Hope this adds to your production outcomes
wau! thats nice just a simple way of extracting essential oil, i work with oil extracting company and i would like to learn more from you about distillations
Brilliant video A work of passionate and rare ppl. you home must be fragrant. your wisdom must be fragrant. your neighbourhood must be fragrant. Even fragrance must be leading to ur address. Love from Pakistan.
The 10:15 is basically a manually controlled Dean Stark trap / apparatus. You can also use the separatory funnel if you don't need continues operation.
Good job, what about your loss of volatile vapor at the discharge of heat exchanger which is in atmosphoric, i would suggest a covered trap / funnel would do a over condensing and no escape of vapours, agree?
Just wanted to ask, at end you showed the oil having few water droplets. What can be done to avoid that? To remove the water droplets from oil? And thanks for explaining the complete procedure. Really helpful
I know I am a bit late in commenting as the video was posted in 2016 but I just seen it today. Satisfying to see as Shannon pointed out :-) Do you sell your oils online or is there a way of getting some of your oils. I feel there is some more healing energy in something when you know the source and the spirit they put in it. Thank you for the video!
merhaba Türkiye'den ... çok iyi bir video, mükemmel! bir sorum var, bitki ve su aynı tencerede olacak mı, yoksa su aşağıda ve bitki üstte ayrı olacak mı? is it important?
Hello and thank you for this video, I have a small three-liter still and I haven't had a single drop of essential oil, do I have to keep the temperature at 100 °? I had a lot of trouble cooling the coil (with cold water but manually) it was very negative, do I absolutely have to be plugged into the tap? and finally my cooling tank has only two outputs. Thank you, I await your advice.
Good explanation! May I ask you where you got your bottles and temper caps from? Also, where do you have your labels made? I’m starting out on lemongrass and other essential oils business and any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Love your distiller. I hope my husband can build us one because distillers are very expensive.
Do you use stainless over glass as a preference or because of cost and availability of materials for that sized container? I am curious about using glass specifically as it relates to using a round bottom flask and glass condenser, compared to using stainless steel equipment.
They're all custom technically. He said he had the stainless steel 55 gallon drum cut and polished, the gaskets he used were $2 silicone rings from Home Depot, the condenser was custom with the three tubes inserted and he even joked about how his welding wasn't cute but very effective. Distilling isn't a one size fits all kinda setup....ancient native Americans used handmade clay pots sitting over a fire, similar to a witch's cauldron. Distilling is more understanding how distilling works, and you constructing what you need from there 👌🏾
Great video! I'm wondering why lower pressure is better though - is it because high pressure can lead to higher boiling temperature which could burn whatever you're extracting? Or is there some other reason?
I mean you can't eat or cook after being boiled highest temperature distilling for long period of 10-14 hours amount of large of herbs and fruit.I think the best way they use for remaining plant matter to give the plant back make into recycle material?. I mean plant can take anything even recycling, pass motion material after being extract, charcoal left over and many more etc. So it would not go to waste rather than throw or throw into garbage or even incinerate it.
Can Avocado oil be extracted in this manner? Avocado pulp can be dried till it becomes dark brown. After that, can the dried pulp be used to extract oil ?
Stainless steel drums would be good for water distilling! Water is very precious if it's contaminated. Not to mention itd be good to steam wood. There's a chemical used to extract oil, that's how paprika is made. The chemical extracts the oil, then the chemical.is evaporated the oil.
@@flaplaya No that is not a Soxhlet Extractor. Do you see any siphoning part and cooler on top? If you wrote Dean-Stark apparatus I would say "sort of".

That is a really big setup, and very efficient I would say. That is big amount of oil extracted pretty quickly.
Yes, yes, after watching this, I will certainly pay gold prices for my essential oils.
Thanks. Love the set up.

That's a serious still you got there :)
How much water are you evaporating during an essential oil run like this?
I loved how well you’ve explained what you do. Just curious if plant matter is the only things you can use?
Just wanted to ask, at end you showed the oil having few water droplets. What can be done to avoid that? To remove the water droplets from oil? And thanks for explaining the complete procedure. Really helpful

Have you extracted gingger oil with steam destilation like that?
i wonder if the pine needles is dried and what kind of tools you used to shred it
thanks mate, what about the water part ? that must contain water soluble from the plant could it be reduced to a condensed form ?
Is essential oil safe to consume thank you Vernon
Where did you get that separator! Its lovely.
Great video... What material is the barrel is it Stainless or Polished mild steel?
Could you use a bike inner tube as the gasket? would be wider so your lid would fit easier.
Can you do a video when distilling ginger?
Impressive, can you make Orange oil from the same setup of machinery.
What's the music around 09:00?
How efficient would you say this set up is? Did you get it custom made? If not I would like to know where can I acquire a similar one. Thanks

What temperature do you steam with and how do you know when to stop before burning anything?
Great video! I'm wondering why lower pressure is better though - is it because high pressure can lead to higher boiling temperature which could burn whatever you're extracting? Or is there some other reason?
Higher pressure leads to over oxidation
How much is that, want to buy one?
How Many Watt is the Element Heater ???
What do you do with the hydrofoil? Is it of any use? And then what do you do with the remaining plant matter?
I mean you can't eat or cook after being boiled highest temperature distilling for long period of 10-14 hours amount of large of herbs and fruit.I think the best way they use for remaining plant matter to give the plant back make into recycle material?. Can Avocado oil be extracted in this manner? Avocado pulp can be dried till it becomes dark brown. After that, can the dried pulp be used to extract oil ?
At around 11:13 You mentioned water present in the oil. How did you remove it before bottling ?
can separate using hexane

Does anyone know where to buy an essencier like that or similar?
Where did you get your distiller from ?
Hey Ian - where did you get your essencier? I can't seem to find anything like it, at least not adjustable.
