I feel bad for James Magnussen :( He was a top guy in 2012 but narrowly missed the chance to become an Olympic champ. Then - injury, surgery, taking time off and slowly coming back to shape. Not enough time to be back in Rio as a medal contender in individual races (or even qualify for it). In Tokio he'll be 29 year old. But he still seems so far from his sub 48 shape. And Australia has some very strong sprinters now. Gonna be really tough to even qualify for 2020. P. S. Similar situation with McEvoy. 47.0 in domestic competition, then failure in Olympics and no signs of coming back to the top since then.
Eugene S. Yea same, I feel bad for him. Hopefully he can get back into shape again and post sub-48 100m free swims. Qualifying to the Olympics will be a challenge but I feel like it is doable.
Chalmers broke the streak, but that's the thing. New guns taking on records. 50 free Proud/Dressel 100 Dressel/Chalmers 200 Haas/Who knows 400/800/1500 Italian duo, Detti/Paltrinieri All back for Kliment Kolesnikov+Rylov+Murphy+Pebley 50 breast Nico/Andrew 100 breast Nico/Andrew/Whitley/Alot 200 Japanese+US+ So many 50 fly ANDRII GOVOROV+Dressel+Proud 100 Dressel/Milak/Le clos 200 Le Clos/ Milak
What really made me appreciate James Magnussen was his swimswam podcast appearance: ruclips.net/video/m8mmrzXyiBY/видео.html He goes through what happened at London and how he is still quite proud of how he managed to bounce back from the relay and get the silver there. Also goes through how he was able to recover from this whole experience and get the gold in 2013. .
One of the great could have beens in the sport of swimming. Could have broken the world record and could have been an Olympic Champion in 2012. Either would have qualified him as one of the greats. Now he will be a footnote in someone else's history.
This is the guy who Casey met when he was on his 21,000 dollar first class ride. He asked this guy if the shower was good and he didn’t even notice it was an Olympic sthlete

Australian curse, crazy fast in trials, never win gold
Chalmers though...
Agreed. Remembered watching him that night and felt as if I was stabbed in the gut when he lost. Really pity him.

Does Magnussen have the fastest 100 free time ever in a Tech Suit?
The textile record used to be Magnussen's with his time of 47.10 seconds, but Cameron McEvoy broke the record in 2016 with a time of 47.04 seconds.
Ooo, its coming close to sub-47!
