Ian Thorpe made swimming so exciting, the race of the century at his peak no one could beat him. his first olympic gold was a smash I still celebrate.. He is the best ever. His swimming style is so smooth and unique with extra length cruising, I copy that also. he is fabulous.
Thank you for this kind of videos!!I think the No.1 race should be the gold over 200m free on Athen's Olympics because of the history behind it. Did you knew? At trials on this event he was disqualified and one of the guys who won the spot left it for him, That guy said that "Thorpe had a bigger chance to win the gold" so Thorpe took it with the pressure on has back to bring the gold home! Also I think it'd be a great recognition to his bronce medal in the 100m Free on Athens because that became on the history books as one of the Olympic swimmers to achive a medal over three individual freestyle events (100m, 200m, 400m).
Thank you for your opinions!! The getting 3rd in the 100m freestyle is definitely a great achievement. However, I believe the event in which he got disqualified at trials was the 400m freestyle in 2004.
I love how in the Athens race the commentators says that Phelps would be able to come home against Thorpe...LOL At the time of this race Thorpe was world record holder in 200m (the Athens race), 400m & 800m...so he wasn't going to run out of energy or pace.
The 4 x 100m from Sydney was hands down his best swim given the context: - not his best distance - against a very good 100m swimmer - needing to come from behind - the atmosphere - had broken the 400m WR about 2 hours before
@@Ineddiblehulk LOL - he was in the final lap. Gary Hall Jnr blew his load down the first lap. Great composure by Thorpie to mow him down in that last ten metres. Ian knew how to get onto the wall first.
Yep - really nice bloke. I was lucky enough to swim in the lane next to him for a few months when he was training at Sutherland under Doug Frost. Being that close to a champion in any sport makes you realise that no matter how hard you train you'll never come close to their performance.
He beat the best 100m freestyler swimmers at 2004 Athens too. Had he trained a power jump start he could even beat most of 100m freestyle swimmers nowadays.

This video did not disappoint. I would have like to see his 3.40.06 race included too, because even though it was not exciting, it did feel surreal. I don't think I've ever seen someone win by that huge of a margin in a 400 freestyle at top level. Ever again.
I’ve watched a lot of swimming in my life, but that 3rd race in the video is by far the best race I will ever watch. I had never seen that race before today. How the hell did he win that? Hackett was miles ahead and basically had it in the bag
I love the Aussie and American rivalry in swimming. As an American, I cringed when Gary Hall Jr said they were going to smash the Aussies like guitars. It was embarrassing. Hall had that coming. This wasn’t just a loss. The US hadn’t lost that relay in over 3 decades. Then Gary runs his mouth and couldn’t back it up. Maybe if Gary had trained a little harder he wouldn’t have died so badly. Props to Thorpe. Beautiful stroke, dude just glides like he’s doing a catch up drill, because his legs are driving like mad. Who the hell kicks that hard for a 400 straight? It’s just phenomenal.
@@bikkyful It was. And I really wish Hall had kept his mouth shut. But that’s pretty much Gary’s legacy, the guy that ran his mouth and couldn’t back it up. Personally I can’t stand that type of bravado. Gary is actually a really nice guy. I think he was trying to adopt a persona at the Olympics and it went over like a lead ballon. But fair or not, Gary has definitely had to live with that mistake. So I found it odd when France did a similar thing to America in Beijing and had the exact same result. Almost like karma is holding sway. FYI, in my humble opinion Thorpe is one of the greatest swimmers ever. Certainly the best middle distance freestyler of all time and probably the best all around freestyler ever. The speedsuit era robbed Thorpe of a lot of records that may still be standing today. Which is kind of how I judge how far a swimmer is ahead of their time. Thorpe was doing impossible things. He was doing it in the most competitive stroke and in the most competitive events. Phelps 400 IM just doesn’t carry near the same weight as Thorpe’s 200 or even 400 free. To dominate those events like he did was phenomenal, and he even had a rival in what’s his name-Hoogenband or whatever, and Hacket. Just terrible luck that he did all of that right before the speedsuit era. Really wish he could’ve stuck it out a few more years and Thorpe swimming in a speedsuit would’ve really given some people perspective of how fast Thorpe was. Thorpe would still have the 200 and 400 free records. Some 15 years later. In the most competitive event in swimming, the 200 free. I doubt anyone has held the 200 free record half that long in modern swimming. I’m an American fan first, but some swimmers just transcend national sentiment. Hacket was another. What he did in the distance events was jaw dropping. Decades ahead of his time. I also like that the Aussies are very outspoken about PEDs, particularly Sun Yang.
2 of my all time greatest swim races are here - my number one is the Sydney 4 x100m Relay ... THE most exciting swim race i ever saw ... and number 2 ... well, what can you say about Thorpe's final 100m to win his first world championship at 15 years. He took 3 seconds off Grant Hackett in that last 100, most of that in the last lap. Thorpe did that - not to some deadbeat like me, in a suburban pool ... he did that to an all-time GREAT - Grant Hackett. FMD!!!! And the amazing thing is that Hackett was breathing to the right and could see the Thorpedo coming - but could do nothing about it.
I was there that hot January evening back in 1998 when Thorpe came from the clouds to beat Grant Hackett in the 400 m final. That race had such a psychological impact on Hackett - I don’t think he beat Thorpe in a major race after that night.
I'm not a swimming expert. But the way he just seems to glide in the water and his kicks. They're just different. He looked so elegant when he swam that, if not for the other swimmers around him, you wouldn't know how fast he was actually going. He's my all time fav swimmer
I agree. The 400 Freestyle at the 1999 Pan Pacs was epic. I was able to purchase it from the production company on VHS, but after so many moves over the last 20 years, I've lost it... sorry.
I would switch around the 200m freestyles and include either of his 800m Freestyles of 2001 somewhere. That was really the moment where the world realised how Special he was. Beating Hackett in a distance race...
