  • There were doubts Holy Bull could win at 1 1/4 miles.
It was said he couldn't handle pressure.
But the gray colt handled pressure throughout the 1 1/4 miles Saturday at Saratoga and won the Travers Stakes, holding off Concern by a neck at the wire.
"He's a true champion, and there can't be any doubters today," said Mike Smith, Holy Bull's jockey.
Tabasco Cat, the Preakness and Belmont winner, was never a factor and finished third, 17 lengths back in the five-horse field.
"I didn't have any horse under me today," said Pat Day, Tabasco Cat's jockey.
Tabasco Cat was followed by his stablemate, Commanche Trail, entered as a rabbit by trainer Wayne Lukas to put pressure on Holy Bull, and Unaccounted For, who upset Tabasco Cat in the Jim Dandy on July 31.

A shame about Dave and his voice here, but there's a reason Durkin's call for this reason is iconic.

Concern is one of the greatest closers ever. He went last to first in the Breeders Cup Classic a few months later.

I still would like to know who would of won the race that Holy Bull and Cigar were in. However Holly Bull was pulled up on the back side , and Cigar went on to win. Two great runners.

That’s a bit much. Dave’s a legend and deservedly so, but Durkin’s the greatest of all time, and this race might be his greatest call.

It's a shame those not at OTBs or in NYRA territory got stuck with the ABC telecast and Dave Johnson. There's a reason Chic Anderson, Tom Durkin, and Trevor Denman are a class of their own. To say this call is forgettable would be a massive understatement.
