The Travers is run at 10 furlongs. Holy Bull was without question the best horse in training in 1994. Didn't run in the BC. This was a stellar Woodward field, and he toyed with them.

The Bull was 1994 Horse of the Year at three. He won 13 of 16 races, 2 he did not finish, 6 Grade 1, 2 Grade 2, 2 ungraded stakes, an allowance, and a Maiden. Cigar did not race at two, won 2 races out of 9 as a 3yo. When he was a 4yo, Bill Mott became the trainer. Cigar won 1 of 5 allowance races and his first stakes and Grade 1 race after 15 starts. Both of Cigar's wins came after Holy Bull won the Woodward and had wrapped up Horse of the Year honors. Cigar started his win streak with these two wins at the end of 1994 when Mott put Jerry Bailey on his back, took Cigar off the turf and put him on dirt. I was at Gulfstream for both horse's first two races of the 1995 campaign. I have bet on horses that were not the horse I was betting on on several occasions. The first time I saw Cigar in 1995, he was on the slender side. When I saw him before the Donn, I didn't think he was the same horse. Like, he became Arnold in three weeks. I know horses start to fully mature at five, but in three weeks? It didn't matter, Holy Bull broke down, supposedly. He did not want to go into the horse ambulance. Cigar went on to his fourth consecutive win, the rest should be easy with the Bull now retired. You see, Alan Paulson had been very good to the American Government and to the horse racing industry, and he had the Cigar. If you ever been to a track, you know what I mean. But, he was dying from cancer. The consensus from the ones that knew, claimed Mott managed the easiest win streak in history. Cigar won several allowance and non graded stakes races. He faced very few legitimate Grade 1 winners, and the ones he did, were on their way out. When he started running against Grade 1 winners, he lost, and was retired. Paulson passed a few years later. Holy Bull's competition was much stiffer. Cigar doesn't hold a candle to him. Holy Bull sired a Kentucky Derby winner. Seems that Cigar had E D. Holy Bull was one of kind, with folklore as big as Stronach’s statue rising above Gulfstream Park. Holy Bull memorabilia is still available on eBay.

But what a year that would have been with those two matching up race after race.
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 when I finally got to ask Mike Smith about the race against Cigar he told me he could go by him whenever he wanted to...this horse was on another level
No back then there was a huge entry fee if not BC nominated which he wasn't and the BC was at Churchill where he flopped in the mud so Croll was waiting for the next year at Belmont but unfortunately he broke down against Cigar in the Donn handicap in 1995 and retired to stud. Now a days he would have won a win-and-your-in race and automatically would have made the classic with fees waived!
@@danc3831 Horses are magnificent creatures, welding such power through such fragile legs and hoofs. Few make it to the racetrack. Some rise to heights of folklore. With a few exceptions, they are pack animals. They have good and bad days, just like us. They get injured just like us. They are also subject to horrendous drug abuses from unscrupulous, greedy human connections. They become objects of human greed, emotion, and folklore Ghostzapper was brilliant and was well deserving of his Eclipse honors in 2004. Holy Bull was brilliant and was well deserving of his Eclipse honors in 1994. Cigar was brilliant and was well deserving of his Eclipse honors in 1995-96. The immortal Dr. Fager and Secretariat still hold North American track records from the 60s and 70s. On any given day, a horse can become mortal, be subjected to human interference, and human greed and politics. Native Dancer was a television star more popular than Milton Berle. His only loss was in the Kentucky Derby to a horse named Dark Star. Inside connections made a fortune. Frank Stonach bred and raced Ghostzapper. Stonach owns Gulfstream and Santa Anita.
@@danc3831 I don't consider Ghostzapper great. Sure he was fast, but highly unsound. I'm still a bit peeved he's in the Hall of Fame when he couldn't even run more than 4 times a year and only won once at 10f with 4 GI wins that it took him 3 years to accumulate. Holy Bull ran in more races in one year back to back than Ghostzapper ever could. Brilliant yes for Ghostzapper, but great, no.
The Bull got the last laugh in the breeding shed and Cigar shot blanks - Cigar had 13 pounds and Lasix when the Bull got hurt people forget that I was there and they were neck and neck when he got hurt around the backstretch
He never ran in the Classic. His trainer already knew he didn't like Churchill so there was no need to go there. Besides by this point, he had tackled all he needed to and had beaten older horses twice. Nothing more to prove. I'd like to see any modern 3yo these days, tackle this kind of schedule.
There was no win and your in Breeders cup races back then so they would have had to supplement his entry fee what a shame and his derby flop at Churchill where the BC was that year kept him out but Concern won who he beat in the Travers! HOY

You got that right- Durkin is the 🐐
To be fair Durkin tailed off a ton in his latter years and Colmus was a huge improvement at the time
@@DanielSong39 huge improvement? Hes atrocious....i love it when near the finish line of a big race he stammers looking for something eloquent to say, and something comes out of this mouth that would make a 4th grader cringe.
@@marklewen9384 Colmus is an above average race caller. Yes Durkin was better in his prime but towards the end he just did not belong behind a mike
@@DanielSong39 Collmus belongs working at white castle....
Cigar would've never had his run unless "the Bull" hadn't injured himself!!😟😟
Awesome Holy Bull - another goose-bump-inducing performance
Bull finished off a Haskell -Travers - Woodward trifecta. Amazing!
We will never know who was the better horse, Holly Bull or Cigar. The only race they meet in Holly Bull broke down ending his career.
Holy Bull was run into the ground by Cigar, so Cigar was better. He was just stuck on the turf. Cigar had run a 95 at two without Lasix.
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 Cigar was not better than Holy Bull. And No Cigar did not run Holy Bull into the ground nice try. Cigar needed Lasix to keep going, Holy Bull never did. The numbers Holy Bull put up, far exceeds anything Cigar ever did. Had Holy Bull not torn his tendon in the race, there would not have been a 16 race win streak for Cigar. But what a year that would have been with those two matching up race after race.
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 when I finally got to ask Mike Smith about the race against Cigar he told me he could go by him whenever he wanted to...this horse was on another level
Florida derby was 9f in which he galloped
It's too bad there wasn't a Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at the time. He might have been tempted to enter it.
Against Cigar?
Complete domination
When horses ran, Cigar galloped...
But he could never run as fast as this guy.
@@goforwand31 ......and this guy could never run as fast as Ghostzapper.
This a quality field that he beat. Too bad he didn't have enough in the tank for the Classic.
He never ran in the Classic. His trainer already knew he didn't like Churchill so there was no need to go there. Besides by this point, he had tackled all he needed to and had beaten older horses twice. Nothing more to prove. I'd like to see any modern 3yo these days, tackle this kind of schedule.
@@goforwand31 There is a reason why they don't, the trainers know what they can and can't do
@@goforwand31 I was friends with jimmy croll. Bull was not BREEDERS CUP nominated. Its why he went to calder as a 2yo and not BC juvenile.
Look at Smith’s full head of hair!
The one and only!
What a beast. ❤❤❤❤
Although the older horses of 1994 were mediocre, it was still a great win by the Bull.
Is he still alive? Wikipedia doesn't show a date of death.
steven cooke yes I'm pretty sure (trusting Wikipedia)
The Bull is still the property of Darley at 25.
He just passed on a couple of days ago. 26 years young.
There was no win and your in Breeders cup races back then so they would have had to supplement his entry fee what a shame and his derby flop at Churchill where the BC was that year kept him out but Concern won who he beat in the Travers! HOY
Wish I could of seen "Holy Bull" Race with a very young talented kid, Mike Smith ..
The Amzaing Zenyatta, SongBird ...
Big $ Mike has ridden the best of the best rt into HISTORY Books.
Many a Legendary Horse has tasted the massive attention of triumph in
winners circle still Wilded Eyed & Breathing deep thanks to Mike skillful talents ...
.. who can forget Mike Smith's ride on "Derossilmyer" coming out of nowhere with no camera on Mike ... but cameras at finish wire ... punters thinking fractions of second to race over. Race now detremined.
Than Mikie comes flying splattered in mud to steal race while renaming all other runners into
"Nice Try & also rans ".
I NEVER take MS for granted ...The guys a Legend in equine racing ... yes, i'm newer bettor ... still ...
Even legends get older ... Memories NEVER AGE only get added too, while sometimes they grow briter ...
Thanks
First time I have ever seen this race... wow!!
I FEEL BAD YOU HAVE MISSED THE SUBLIMITY OF THE GREAT HOLY BULL.
@@billross6013: I agree, they absolutely don't make them like him anymore.
Except for the Travers, which he held on for dear life, couldn't win at 9 furlongs Last I saw Holy Bull he broke down chasing Cigar. How come when Holy Bull beats these horses (Devil His Due, Tinners Way,etc...) there the best horses around. When Cigar beats these horses they're garbage
Geez man Shane, you are either a troll or you know nothing about north american thoroughbred racing.. lol and Holy Bull usually was not touched by the whip in most of his winning races. geez the travers is coming up please review those youtube videos again.
By the way, I am not in the camp which says Cigar beat garbage horses. Cigar is great and there is no second discussion about that too. he showed his absolute top class multiple times - at Dubai, New York etc in top notch Gr1 company.
Shane diamond There is a difference between the two. Cigar needed Lasix to run and Holy Bull ran and won without it his entire career.
+Shane diamond This race was at 9f....what are you? a moron?
By the way, he never lost a 9f race. He won the Florida Derby, Blue Grass, Haskell and Woodward ALL at 9f.
BECAUSE CIGAR was a fully grown 5 year old, 3 year old are not suppose to beat older horses.
Horse racing is a male oriented torture. It is cruel beyond belief.
