You should visit Solo, a city in Central Java. Also, try the intercity buses here in Indonesia. There are some good bus operators between Jakarta and Solo.

I've been to Palembang three years ago, it's not as big or crowded as Jakarta, but i loved it, especially the people there are too nice and friendly.
