This ‘R&B’ episode is one of the finest in the series. From script to performance - it’s beautifully raw. It’s refreshing to watch the messiness of a relationship unfold on-screen. Brilliant work by everyone involved in the telling of this story!
If she gave up her dreams she made him believe that was OK then Beth is to blame. You can't go 20 years into a marriage and blame your partner for your choices, did she communicate to him clearly that she was not OK with his decisions or did she make him believe that she was happy with him taking charge. She belittling his anxiety attacks she crossed the line that is a big NO NO, if your husband has special needs and you had to give up on your needs to accommodate his condition you only do it out of love not out of pity, and you don't regret that sacrifice or throw it back in his face as if they are to blame for being sick. Mental illness is serious if you love someone you don't make them feel less for not being perfect.

Phelton Phive in my opinion you’re missing the point. Beth apologises when she’s wrong, in this argument Randall refuses point blank to except any fault on the argument, even though he knows she’s right, all through their twenty years together it’s always been Beth, as she says has to bend in every situation she’s the one who steps up to the plate so Randall can stay on track. Randall can say he loves her and cares for her ( and he does!) all he wants but not once has he taken the time to consider her dreams, but she has to fall in line so he can fulfill his! So where is Beth’s apology from Randall for putting her dreams to one side for him! 😡
Listen, I don't think Beth was wrong for saying what she said about his anxiety attacks. She meant it. It's the same thing she said after tonight's episode (March 3,2020), almost a year later: "I'm afraid that if I put any more weight on you, you'll crack." Basically what she's saying is 'there's no room for me in this relationship.' and ironically that's what she said about her mother.. There's no air around her mother.

Honestly this fight is just... it's rare. You don't ever see a fight between a married couple without violence or yelling or any filthy tricks to justify breaking a relationship apart. There was no fear in either of them that things would go out of control. I absolutely adore how Beth would not stand down. From the very beginning she was bending. After having an epiphany that changed EVERYTHING for her, she deserved to get it. The anxiety attacks was a low blow but in all honesty, Randall did it first so I don't really blame her. She wanted to both hurt him and also prove her point with the most powerful punch. It was just too powerful And I love Randall but man, she is right. He made all these choices that are good but he never sought to actually discuss how this would affect the relationship. He left it to 'love finds a way' which is what he has always done. I really hope someone was listening in, Annie is the one I would want to the most. She is way too removed from the serious parts of the narrative (which is good since she is so young) but now that it's season 4 she needs to get some serious stuff. Plus it is a good way to parallel with young Randall, especially since she is such a daddy's girl.
As someone who has severe anxiety, it is extremely draining on your partner. I personally don’t hold her at fault for feeling the overwhelmingness it’s tough dealing with the anxiety let alone loving someone who has severe anxiety.
Exactly. Me too! The fact that even people like us side more with Beth but other people have the nerve to say Randall is in the right and Beth has no right to feel this way is appalling.
I know most people are going to say "not everything is about gender bla bla bla...", but in this case, it kinda is as well. The Pearsons have been internalizing traditional gender norms ever since Rebecca stayed home to care for her 3 kids. Its funny how This is Us never really explicitly discuss about gender norms when the main characters seem to have quite rigid ideas of it (Jack, Toby, Randall). They discussed about a lot of things (racism, body image issues, depression, addiction, coming out, etc.), but not gender norms or sexism in general.
Both of them play the role in what’s wrong to be honest, Beth needs to be more ambitious and Randall needs to be more understanding of Beth’s dreams. I feel if they both discussed how they both can achieve what they want and find a balance they would be fine. Marriage is a partnership not a competition.
the speech that went through my mind during this episode: NONONONONONONONONONONONO I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS. RANDALL PULL YOUR STUFF TOGETHER AND BEND LIKE BETH NEED AND BETH APOLOGIZE FOR THOSE INSENSITIVE WORDS AT THE END. YOU WILL STAY TOGETHER AND YOU WILL ACT LIKE YOU GOT SOME SENSE.
L S Beth DID apologise!! Sadly Randall, knew she was right about his parents, and refused to except it, Beth said she’s the one who always bends and she is so right, she made allowances for him and his condition for 20 years, but he never bent for her, and he never took her dreams seriously, as was proved with the voicemail he left her! Sadly I can’t see any way back from this now that Beth has taken her stand.
@@maragathm But it had nothing to do with him being an ex. No matter what he definitely trusted Rebecca. It had to do with Jack being so insecure about being left in the dark and have that horrible thought that he was making her miserable for nearly 2 decades
As someone who has had anxiety my whole life had panic attacks since I was seven, stemming from nothing specific what she said about his panic attacks was absolutely called for. You don't get to use mental illness or issues as an excuse as long as you refuse to even try to get out for them..
Randall always wanted all the things HIS way. He gets angry whenever things go different then he wanted them to be. She put up with every whim of his. She wants something for herself for the first time in this marriage. And Randall can't see past the inconveniences he has to face.
No he didn't. My fiance and I are different people. I have a lot of emotional struggles and he has some too. But we always do our best to listen to each other even when we disagree. With fights, they can get pretty bad and some pretty bad things can be said but we always work it out and we always apologize.
Throughout the clip, you could see the disbelief in Randal’s eyes. He just couldn’t believe that he was going through this “Admit it” argument all over again He thought he’d have a different equation with Beth compared to Jack and Rebecca. But that “Admit it” argument made him believe that some things don’t change with time
You’re responsible for communicating your desires and frustrations. You built a facade on being the “head of the household” but it was a lie because you were really keeping your real feelings bottled up and now you’re holding him responsible for that. Sorry, Team Randall on this one.
Just don't follow the manipulation... It's a give and take.... Being honest with yourselves...Sounds like Beth is done but Randall had a flashback of his parents and he was stuck in that moment....he couldn't admit you are right---- Beth.... An apology from a perfect person is hard....
Beth; Toby and even Miguel to some extent will never understand what that family has been through Jack was their life force and without him their world fell apart Randall got the worst of it He wanted to be the rock of his family but in Beth he saw someone he can lean on too But using his "anixety attacks" made Randall realize that being like Jack has its problems and that is you dont often get to lean on someone Jack kept things till his dying breath And Randall who come closest to him but his trauma catches up to him everytime He just walked out because the one person who knew how he has to deal with his issues used that point just to hurt him That kind of broke his sappy world apart
We all have pain. Beth lost her father too. Toby has been through stuff. Zoe was sexually molested. The Big 3 are not the only ones who have endured loss, but they behave like they are.
@@HerLovesBooks They were part of something that was almost perfect And they lost that People rarely get a chance to live with that And I agree Randall voice message was too far But Beth knew how his panic attacks affected him Panic attacks are no joke And when you are with the love of your life you don't try to use their traumatic psychological issue as point to win an argument But yeah I agree what Zoe endured something which is much more than anyone has endured on that show
Team Randall. Responsibilities pile up in relationships. In parenting and adulting, sometimes sacrifices are made when the things that pay the bills need more time than the things you want to do. Beth is throwing her self guilt onto Randall.
I'm team Randall. Beth had her chances to go for her dreams, but I think she just lacked courage. So it's easier to blame Randall for everything despite the fact that he is really understanding ant supportive man. It seems she is a bit jealous because her husband had that courage to do what he want. And the scene in the store showed that she was just too afraid to do what she want.
oof this argument was so well carried out through the season. also-- beth bringing up the anxiety attack was a low blow, but randall's voicemail was also low so i think that blame is shared i just love both of them and im so glad they found a compromise / solution for things T . T
I have been a Christian for over 36 years and have been in leadership positions and watched Pastors demand their wives give up everything to support his dreams and visions. Whenever that happens you usually create a miserable marriage for title and position only or divorce. Beth is right. She has made so many sacrifices for Randall's dreams, but where she is wrong is that she allowed it. Both are wrong but Beth was complicit in it. Now she can no longer endure being looked over so she is striking back. Randall can't see it because it has gone on so long that he has normalized and would have to admit even though he was adopted, he is truly his father's son.
All I can say is that I would never again be with a man like Randall in the first place, let alone marry him or have children with him. That first date between him and Beth showed Beth and us the audience all we need to know about him and I would have been running away terrified if I were her. Their marriage was always going to lead to this. I have no patience for overly obsessive people or for people who steamroll me with constantly demanding my support and attention but then screaming bloody murder if I turn around and ask for one thing. I made the mistake of being with someone like that before and those are mental scars that will never heal. Never again.
Randall is a narcissist plain and simple. He weaponizes therapy language, changes Beth's words on her and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if he fakes his anxiety attacks.
Beth’s not wrong!! Randall always had things his way and she was the one who made sacrifices. When it was time for her to have her dream job, Randall couldn’t handle it.
I think she needs to look into teaching day classes. There must be some kind of dance classes going on during the day. This would be the most practical solution.
Beth is a grown woman. You have twenty years to say no. Her placing the responsibility of her actions on him is ridiculous. She can be right in saying his vision has been the default, but she can't complain if she never voiced her issues with it beforehand. If you are an adult, it's your responsibility to advocate for yourself in a healthy relationship, and then it's your partner's responsibility to be open to that message. But if you don't say anything, you can't turn around and complain about the result. That is revisionist history.
Has no one noticed that at 14:40, the time with them on the bed at the dorm. Beth looked like she was going to vomit when she started kissing him. What's that all about? I wonder if she really was sick in this episode. It was a weird kiss.
Team Randall... Beth chose to do those things, it doesn't matter what he wanted she could of said No and she didnt, don't blame someone for you being afraid to use your voice
A true partner doesn't let you shrink yourself. They don't knowingly stream roll over you or have a self-centered way of walking through marriage and then shrug and say "well you should've stuck up for yourself 🤷🏿♂️" that's not being a partner. When you put more and more and more on your spouse's shoulders and you only stop when they speak up or break isn't a healthy marriage. A real partner should check in. Should see how the other is holding up. They should ASK and discuss and check to see if their partner is okay. They should COMMUNICATE and see if their spouse is okay with making a huge life decision instead of just making it for them and expecting them to roll with the punches no matter what
@@HelloGudbye93 Communication is a two-way street. If Beth wasn't ok with those decisions she should have voiced that before. Instead of making it seem like she was ok with those decisions.
Could someone help me understand what is was that Beth meant when she said “You don’t even realize it, but they’re both in it!” to Randall? Who did she mean by “both”?
As someone with a depression and anxiety disorder, I’m on Beth’s side here. The anxiety attacks comment wasn’t even out of line. It is so easy to lose yourself in taking care of someone else. Randall had a panic disorder, and she felt like she had to hold everything together while he was spinning out. It’s a very valid point.
@@Big-back23she showed up for him time and time and time again. She has always supported him and his dreams. And this one time, she has a dream. Something she desperately missed and needed back in her life and he’s expecting her to sacrifice it for him.

Such a powerful scene. Loved this episode 😍
1:52 Randall's face is forever a meme😅
Both of them play the role in what’s wrong to be honest, Beth needs to be more ambitious and Randall needs to be more understanding of Beth’s dreams. I feel if they both discussed how they both can achieve what they want and find a balance they would be fine. Marriage is a partnership not a competition.
Beth is is stronger than anyone on the show.
All day every day!!!
Randal is. She’s just hysterical and nagging
the speech that went through my mind during this episode:
NONONONONONONONONONONONO
I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS.
@@frankie5862 no you don't get to give up hope Beth and Randall are forever!!!!✊ Lol jk if u couldn't tell
L S ok you’re Entitled to your opinion, but even though I know it’s only a show, I’ll have to agree to disagree! 😂👍
funny thing is, when it was rebecca and jack's fight, randall totally blamed jack.
Their issue was more complicated because it involved an ex boyfriend who was hitting on Rebecca.
A boy will be 99.9 percent on his mother's side.💕💯
he was right, and it's his fault now too
@@maragathm But it had nothing to do with him being an ex. No matter what he definitely trusted Rebecca. It had to do with Jack being so insecure about being left in the dark and have that horrible thought that he was making her miserable for nearly 2 decades
Between Beth and Randall and Charlie and Nicole both are the best verbal fights I’ve ever seen.
Who are Charlie and Nicole?
@NeptuneLady1957 The couple from A Marriage Story
As someone who has had anxiety my whole life had panic attacks since I was seven, stemming from nothing specific what she said about his panic attacks was absolutely called for.
You don't get to use mental illness or issues as an excuse as long as you refuse to even try to get out for them..
Susan Kalechi Watson has such great cheekbones!!!
Randall always wanted all the things HIS way. He gets angry whenever things go different then he wanted them to be. She put up with every whim of his. She wants something for herself for the first time in this marriage. And Randall can't see past the inconveniences he has to face.
I can see my man being a Randall. He's amazing and I pray I have the patience of Beth
When she said "anxiety attacks" woooow🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
I knew she messed up when she said that
@@anwandamanfred8498 I just don't see them recovering from this..20 years of built up anger and rage whew!!!
@@anwandamanfred8498 I just don't see them recovering from this..20 years of built up anger and rage whew!!!
Randall didn’t hear a word she said
He never does. It’s always about him.
No he didn't. My fiance and I are different people. I have a lot of emotional struggles and he has some too. But we always do our best to listen to each other even when we disagree. With fights, they can get pretty bad and some pretty bad things can be said but we always work it out and we always apologize.
No, he heard everything she said.
I missed this is us 🥺💔 I came back here to see my people ❤️
“I’m all out speeches.”
Throughout the clip, you could see the disbelief in Randal’s eyes. He just couldn’t believe that he was going through this “Admit it” argument all over again
He thought he’d have a different equation with Beth compared to Jack and Rebecca. But that “Admit it” argument made him believe that some things don’t change with time
My favorite part of this episode was when Beth didn't let Rebecca put her input on her conversation with Randall.
You’re responsible for communicating your desires and frustrations. You built a facade on being the “head of the household” but it was a lie because you were really keeping your real feelings bottled up and now you’re holding him responsible for that. Sorry, Team Randall on this one.
i’m team beth but it sucks to understand both of their points. amazing actors
Just don't follow the manipulation... It's a give and take.... Being honest with yourselves...Sounds like Beth is done but Randall had a flashback of his parents and he was stuck in that moment....he couldn't admit you are right---- Beth.... An apology from a perfect person is hard....
Beth; Toby and even Miguel to some extent will never understand what that family has been through
Jack was their life force and without him their world fell apart
Randall got the worst of it
He wanted to be the rock of his family but in Beth he saw someone he can lean on too
But using his "anixety attacks" made Randall realize that being like Jack has its problems and that is you dont often get to lean on someone
Jack kept things till his dying breath
And Randall who come closest to him but his trauma catches up to him everytime
He just walked out because the one person who knew how he has to deal with his issues used that point just to hurt him
That kind of broke his sappy world apart
We all have pain. Beth lost her father too. Toby has been through stuff. Zoe was sexually molested. The Big 3 are not the only ones who have endured loss, but they behave like they are.
@@HerLovesBooks
They were part of something that was almost perfect
And they lost that
People rarely get a chance to live with that
And I agree Randall voice message was too far
But Beth knew how his panic attacks affected him
Panic attacks are no joke
And when you are with the love of your life you don't try to use their traumatic psychological issue as point to win an argument
But yeah I agree what Zoe endured something which is much more than anyone has endured on that show
@@HerLovesBooks exactly! This family needs to get over it. and not ruin their lives and others forever!!
The kids need to start going to church because there's one way and ONLY way to heal.
Beautifully said
Team Randall. Responsibilities pile up in relationships. In parenting and adulting, sometimes sacrifices are made when the things that pay the bills need more time than the things you want to do. Beth is throwing her self guilt onto Randall.
This scene ate
I'm team Randall. Beth had her chances to go for her dreams, but I think she just lacked courage. So it's easier to blame Randall for everything despite the fact that he is really understanding ant supportive man. It seems she is a bit jealous because her husband had that courage to do what he want. And the scene in the store showed that she was just too afraid to do what she want.
oof this argument was so well carried out through the season. also-- beth bringing up the anxiety attack was a low blow, but randall's voicemail was also low so i think that blame is shared
i just love both of them and im so glad they found a compromise / solution for things T .
Randall can't see it because it has gone on so long that he has normalized and would have to admit even though he was adopted, he is truly his father's son.
i think they are both to blame here. randall consuming beth’s life and beth expecting more from randall than he can handle
Knowing the decades they evolved through their old roles make sense as do the new twists and turns. Just got to find an evolved way to co-exist.
Bro its a tv show
Beth’s not wrong!! Randall always had things his way and she was the one who made sacrifices. When it was time for her to have her dream job, Randall couldn’t handle it.
I think she needs to look into teaching day classes. There must be some kind of dance classes going on during the day. This would be the most practical solution.
Leilani VisikoKnox-Johnson if only it was that simple!! 🤔
Fran 55 Nothing about their situation is simple. But it is something to look into as a possibility.
Hi, just wanted to know if by any chance anyone knows who plays the instrumental song that's playes at the end of the episode when Randall leaves?
Has no one noticed that at 14:40, the time with them on the bed at the dorm. Beth looked like she was going to vomit when she started kissing him. What's that all about? I wonder if she really was sick in this episode. It was a weird kiss.
“I don’t want to be in this house with you right now”
That’s cold
This is great acting
“Im all out of speeches”
Good now is the time for ACTIONS.
No more empty promises
Amazing acting.
This scene was the best
episode?
On a side note, anyone know the name of the paint color in their bedroom? Lol I love that blue
Could someone help me understand what is was that Beth meant when she said “You don’t even realize it, but they’re both in it!” to Randall? Who did she mean by “both”?
She was referring to his parents.
How ? Randell would do anything for Beth but Beth can’t do anything for him? She’s rude and acts like she’s does everything when she does nothing
@@Big-back23she showed up for him time and time and time again. She has always supported him and his dreams. And this one time, she has a dream. Something she desperately missed and needed back in her life and he’s expecting her to sacrifice it for him.
I hated this fight. Felt like there were my parents fighting
They messy for putting in the "I'm doing the bending" line lol..
I think it’s interesting Randal can’t bring up a time where he bent for Beth
Well that was intense
This show's LIT!!!!!!!!
Both fighting for their dreams, or who holds the power in their relationship, but forgetting they have a daughter struggling with doubts and fears about her sexuality
Quisiera saber como se llama la canción que suena de fondo al terminar la pelea, alguien pudiera decirme como encontrarla?
R&B
OF COURSE IT HAD TO BE BETHS FAULT
She treated him like crap when he wanted to get married. She did that to him time and time again. Now she gets sensitive?
I’m glad she went off… He needed to hear all of that. Now have an anxiety attack 😎😎😎😎
Relationships are tough
I hope every thing work out for them thats marriage for you
Jack didn’t have to go there with Rebecca
Damnnnnnnnn the low blow, but you can't blame someone because you lacked the courage to pursue something you loved to do she used him for an scapegoat
Good luck to you ... "He's out of Speeches...."
This a prime example of why marriage and kids is a horrible idea. You can never ever win and simply relax!
this was like watching my parents fight. damn i remember i was so shitless scared they would brakeup but they found the door🥹
Randall deserved everything Beth said
In my marriage also, I am all bent out of shape.
Anxiety attack comment so unnecessary. Women we need to learn to fight clean and in a conducive manner
*0:37**-**0:48*

Generally, men dreams support the family where a womans dream supports themselves. Not to say that she wouldnt be there but ther dreams would seperate them to a certain extent
break! Randall has 90% of the blame she has only 10%
Team Randall
Anxiety attacks. Ooooof. Team Randall all the way.
The only thing is she lied abt working with her ex,that's all
Team Beth all. The. Way!
I hate it when Randall is about to cry 🤢
Don't do it Randall!
Dude could have made it better by ordering nachos and wearing a T shirt 👕 😅
