lonnie chavis (young randall here) is incredibly smart and wise. he wrote an essay on his experiences with racism when he was about 12 years old. he talked about this scene and how it was hard for him not to cry because it was so familiar to his reality
Mandy Moore was briliiant here. The motherly pain and resentment all piled up and she hurled it all out in this scene. She spoke for every mom who has experienced racism regarding their children.
Except for keeping William a secret. In a way it is understandable because she lost Kyle and she never wants to lose a child again. Still tho.... that was his biological dad.
@@casmeraki no but to have to listen to the raw explanation of why he may have experienced someone treating him differently in real his life is additionally traumatic at such a young age.
It's possible that the young actor wasnt anywhere near the room when the scene was shot..editing makes scenes look continuous when they can easily not be..its possible that the shot of the mother turning around and seeing the child could have happened hours or even days later, all the actors wearing the same clothes and it was simply stitched to the rest of the scene. In fact this is almost certainly what happened because they had to move the camera and hence the lighting..which probably took awhile.
Right! That's the one thing that was glaring unrealistic to me about this scene. If this was real, the moment Rebecca opened her mouth her mother would cut her off and talk over her; it would just descend into garbage. I'm guilty of doing this too sometimes, especially when talking about politics/race/religion. It is VERY hard to keep your mouth shut when someone is saying something that offends your ego, beliefs, position, or what have you.
@@sam6350 Actually no. It's pretty realistic because not all bigotry is intentional malevolence. Her mother's defense was pretty spot on calling Rebecca hysterical and saying how she couldn't understand that new pastor's accent. She's not a hateful person, just ignorant.
I love this scene better than any other one in the series. I don't know it is so natural and makes me feel the pure love of a mother. Rebecca just please adopt me.
WHOA did not realise its Mandy Moore. EDIT: And the sad thing is she is totally right people like this exist, often those who are close to us are like this and since we know them we make excuses for them but there comes a time when enough is enough. This is one of my favorites scenes in show really, and what make it better also is her mom really doesn't realize she is being recist which is so realistic really
Honestly it's very tough to not only make ur parents realize but to say that they r wrong. We always hv this teaching parents r right , they know more than us . Especially its more challenging if ur parents have set mindset.
I hate that she (Janet) acts innocent when everything 'Becca says it's true. And certianly thanks to Grandma Janet, Kate would get a food complex beside that note at the pool. Is this show on Netflix Canada?
The a child of a personality disorder parent - I felt this! I am so grateful that I have been in a position to spend about $50,000 per year therapy - I am a filthy privileged person and I know it!!!
Obviously, Another person, who have entitled white privilege had no idea of how it feels to be the victim of systemic racism or be empathetic towards the lesser privileged ones, considers the daughter hysterical and in wrong. On an unrelated note, you don't even know how to spell 'obviously'. 😂
The way she cradled her womb as if she was trying to protect Randall from before he was born, that breaks my soul. I

That's Rapunzel!?
Yes
Rebecca and Randall have the sweetest relationship ❤
Love how she threw the 'hysterical' accusation at her. It's a typical response from the morally depraved.
Yep....
Morally depraved. Now that is a perfect analogy.
It's also misogyny
Yeah cause you're morally upright

So she would be ok visiting her mother as long as she only hurt Kevin and Kate

She was being a protective and loving mom defending her child to the child’s grandmother. She wasn’t hysterical enough IMO.
