Thank you Vic Stefanu for another amazing Changing of the Guard video. The history of these guard's uniforms is so interesting. Takes an exceptionally great man to wear that uniform, tassels, stockings, and those shoes with such masculinity, discipline, and grace! And they are all the same height! Love it!!
Hi, thank you for your comments, I agree what you say about the uniform and how proud these soldiers are to wear it!!
@@VicStefanu CAN YOU PLEASE HELP I LIKE THE CAPS THE GUARDS ARE WEARING WITH THE LONG TASSELS THAT ARE ATTATCHED TO THE CAPS
They're the same height because in order to become one, there are qualifications. Those are: You need to be at least 1,89 (6.2 in Imperial), Male, Caucasian, no medical problems and of course, Greek.
It's not a tomb of a soldier that died during the Balkan Wars, it's a tomb for every soldier that ever have died for Greece.
Thank you for your comments!!
Actually for every unknown soldier that ever have died for Greece
Respect for Greek patriots from Poland
I hope I am correct but the carving of the fallen soldier symbolises either Achilles OR King Leonidas of Sparta being carried home on their shield. That as a symbol shows the ultimate respect for so many Greek warriors who have fought and died with great Honour.
His name was bob
As a ten year U.S. Army veteran I have deployed around the world. Thanks for showing the great Greek honor of the military. Peace from Arizona.

Thank you my brother for writing the truth, too many haters lately, but some people still like Greece, a lot of bonds between Greeks and Americans, I would love to visit the beautifull harsh Arizona fields and ride a horse there!! much respect for your services to your country,
Lord Darkside Hello World Brother. last week we were 120 degrees Fahrenheit. I still worked my job fueling aircraft. ARMY strong! Peace!
As an ex military myself, very solemn ceremony.. to my Greek comrades Thank you for your service. Respectful ceremony.
+Royalhighlander Thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!!
This is immensely challenging and requires superb balance, stamina and concentration. Respect to our Greek friends.
Hi Christine, thank you for your comments!
Love you
I don't care about the costumes or the way they walk, it's a tradition there. more important is their intention to respect those who have died defending their country
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
Very different. Respect from Turkey
Thanks for watching! 👍👍👍
My Grandfather fought in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). Every year we would travel from CT to NYC for the Greek independence day parade. My Grandfather always marched in that perade in his Greek military uniform.
Wow, amazing fact, you must be proud of him. If you went to the parade in the beginning to mid 80s, we have probably crossed paths, I used to go there (I lived in New Jersey)
Hellas thank you!!Pride and honor only!!
Salute to the people who serve my country, Greece
Thank you for viewing my videos!!
I was privileged to watch this in April 1975. It is a remarkable display of precision, Honour and Respect. As someone who hails from Britain I am aware of The Changing of the Guards in London and it's importance and the history behind it. It must be an incredible Honour to be involved in this and to be (Sorry for the spelling) a member of the Ebzonie.
Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!!
As a former Evzone i would like to add some notices. The tomb shows an dead ancient Greek soldier an “hoplite” with his helmet and shield, not a soldier from the balkan wars. At the wall are written the places were Greek soldiers fought during the 20th century. The white clothing “lefka” is the formal uniform worn every Sunday or during the parade or at any other celebration. The light browns (the balkan wars uniform)is the summer everyday uniform. During the winter these are replaced by the dark blue uniform from our one and only Macedonia. The height of all evzones is 187cm+.
Thanks for uploading.
Yours sincerely,
Giorgos A.
Hi George, thank you for this information. I think I said that the soldier buried in the tomb is from the 1st Balkan war, I was not referring to the marble figure on the wall..
Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures Hi mr. Stefanu yes you are right! For your audience information the tomb is an empty symbolic tomb for every Greek soldier ever fall in battle. As we say in Greece it is a “kenotafio”. For the history, only the evzones have the right to stand or even clean all this area around the tomb. I remember that sometimes we had to take buckets of water late at night and go do the cleaning. Sorry for the long message. Thank you for loving the Presidential Guard of Greece!
Greetings from Greece and “Christos Anesti”! Today we have Easter!

@SALI BERISHOVIÇ EDVIN RAMOVIÇ everybody who knows some history knows that its origins are Albanian. Its shorter cause it is more easy to move around and suits the hotter climate of Greece !!

My wife and I had the honor of visiting Greece during September 2016. Firstly, magic Sifnos for a wedding, then Athens. This video brought back the fondest of fond memories. It amazed me that these young chaps have the stamina to stand still for a whole two hours. What an experience watching the changing of the guard: pure magic!
Then it was off to the Peloponesus with its beauty and blissfulness. Northern Greece will see us soon!
Thank you very much for viewing my videos!! I will be abck this summer and I will videotape them once again...
You're always welcome my friend
I talked to an inspector who was an ex Euzonas guard and he told me that standing still for 2 hours is a piece of cake, after what you've gone through in training. In training you have to stay still for 8 hours all while your generals try to mock you make you laugh, curse you, hit you etc. And you mustn't move at all

Some people they say ridiculous appearance the look of Evzone. Greece had so many uniforms to choose from many places in Greece and I'm talking about B.C. uniforms, perhaps the Macedonians perhaps the Spartans perhaps of the Athenians or the Thessalians (there are people who say the costume of the Evzones that they are skirts, then what are the previous ones I mentioned? they wore similar.) so many regions to choose ... all with their own great history.
But the costume that united the Greeks, the costume that has so much semantics, the uniform that has all over the Greece, the uniform that has been stained with so much blood, is that!
This uniform was worn before the Balkan wars.
Khaki= is the traditional uniform of the Macedonian men, worn before and during the Balkan wars (Summer)
Dark blue= is the traditional uniform of the Macedonian men worn before and during the Balkan wars (winter)
White= is the formal traditional uniform that was worn before and during the Balkan wars
Pontian= is the traditional uniform of the Pontus
Crete= is the traditional uniform of Crete.
The Evzones is the name of several historical elite infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. The first reference for the Evzones was from Homer before ~3000 years, for the Mirmidones of Achilles The Evzones are beating their shoes (tsarouhia) for ancestors to hear that we are alive and free. The tsaruhia weigh is about 3 Kg each and the red color symbolizes the blood spilled into the wars. also the tsaruhia , had 60 nails to hook on the ground in the inaccessible mountain areas and were pointed to be used as weapons in body-wrestling. the same symbolizes the color and the hat (or fareo), plus the long black tassel that symbolizes the tears for the people who gave their lives for thr freedom. The shirt has a white color, which generally dominates the whole of the Evzone uniform, is considered to symbolize the purity of the national competitions. The bottom part of the uniform it call Fustanela was also practice το climbing on rough terrain and have 400 folds because so were the years of slavery from the Ottoman domination.
*All equipment weighs about 20 Kilos and whether frost or heat, they are there! :-)

Very nice ceremony, I am very proud of my greek heritage, my grandma is Greek. Her father fought the fascist occupants during WW2, but during the civil war he sided with the communists, so he and his wife had to flee Greece, and they settled in Czechoslovakia. They never returned to Greece. But my grandma was there for vacation after the Velvet revolution. Salute and respect to Greek people, I hope to visit Athens when I come of age.
Hello my friend, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos and I hope that one day you visit Greece!

I think that it can be traditional for both nations, since each Balkan nation gave something to the other Balkan nations. Greetings from the Czech republic. 🇨🇿🤝🇦🇱
These always make me quite emotional. Even as an American seeing these ceremonies from anywhere around the world! Watching these guards perform such distinguished duties, and giving the utmost and well-deserved respect to the unknown service men & women who have fallen for their nations...it's enough to bring a tear to my eye... Much respect to those that guard, and of course, to those who have fallen...

I visited Greece many years ago and I was very touched when I visited the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier. I loved the beautiful carving on the wall. I went by a few times, and each time I felt a very special and strong emotion, I guess because it reminded me of our Tomb of the Unkowns back here in the United Stated. All warriors should be treated with honor and respect!!!
Hi Pat, such wonderful comments, thank you!! I totally agree with you that all warriors should be treated with honor, unfortunately some people concentrate (and make fun) of the soldiers' uniforms..
Hi Vic! my comment was very honest, I was very moved by the monument. Its so unfortunate that people dont understand that its part of the Grecian history, the uniform is a form of respect for that. Its beautiful!!!
Thank you for your comments!!
I have been to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arrington Virginia and I have to say these guards are very... different. If you get a chance watch a video of the Changing of the Guard in the U.S.
I have been to Arlington cemetery several times and I liked the ceremony.. No ceremony is the best, they are all different..

HI and thank you for viewing my videos!!
Mitary K.
Yes we do, and actually the firts Tomb of the uknown soldier in Greece was built in 1858, not in Athens but in the small island of Syros in Greece.Later in 1930 they made this monument, but i strongly believe that similar monuments must have been around from the ancient Greek period, so for sure Greece-Hellas had a tomb of the unown soldier long before a lot of other nations built theirs, or even exist as nations in the first place.
Much love from Greece.
Mad respect to them for reaching that honor though...Respects to the sacrifices made by those interned at the Tomb!
OUTSTANDING!
Thank you!! 👍👍👍
This is a totally awesome video!! I had no idea that Greece had a tomb of the unknown soldier like we do here in the U.S. at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Thank you so much VIc for making this video and explaining what was going on.
Hi Joan, thank you for viewing my videos and for your wonderful comments!!
You're welcome!!!! Please keep up the good and hard work!!!!
There is literally no country in the world without Tomb of the Unknown. If I had to bet, US might be one of the last countries to ever have one, given your very short time span as a nation/country in human history. I really wonder what do your history teachers learn you at school.
They didn't teach a whole lot about world history that I can recall as far as what countries, if any, have a tomb of the unknown soldier besides the U.S. I have a feeling that they didn't even know themselves.
Joan Semenec It seems that the educational system in the U.S keeps you Americans down on history especially and I've seen many ignorant Americans that are not only ignorant, but willfully ignorant. I mean as a Greek myself I know about the American tomb of the unknown soldier in Arlington and even seen videos of it. It was truly great. Don't take me wrong I'm not offended that you didn't know our "version" of the ceremony, but what makes me furious is that you said that probably your own teachers didn't know and teach you about your ceremony and heroes.
Nice, wonderful event,
commemoration of the Greek heroes.

Those steps are designed in a way to maximize blood flow in the leg area because after that they sit still , almost like they're frozen in time, for an hour. It's "silly" but it's effective.

Is that all to it? I thought there is a story behinds those steps. To me some of the steps resemble horse steps and digging of a horse hoof in the ground. As if it was related to cavalry. Respect from Poland to Greek soldiers upholding the tradition and proudly serving their country.

Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
We did not have time to see it when we were in Greece in the late 50s so it is nice to see it now. The rifles they are carrying are US made M1 Garands. Many of which were lent to the Greeks after WW II and many of which have been returned home. I have bayonets that carry the Greek military's markings.
Very interesting, thank you!! I did not know this fact about the borrowed M1 rifles!!
My great grandfather had an M1 rifle during the war the strangest thing is the byonet. It has a Greek made byonet which is longer than the foreign ones around one meter long my great grandfather said to me that theese byonets were designed to kill 2 enemies at the same time because Greeks were very few against the Italians
As grand daughter of the creator of the Beating of the Retreat in India. I pay my respects to the Greek soldiers.
Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!! 😊😊😊
Wow! That was incredible.
There's no "fixed" height across the entire guard, but there's a minimum requirement which is 6"2. If you watch the guard parade the first row guards are 6"4-6"5 and the last 6"2. Had three uncles euzones. :-)
+John Vassiliadis Thank you (ευχαριστω) for all this important information. When I find some time, I will correct some of my comments on this video!!

This is for the people who think this ceremony is silly. Maybe this isn't how things are done in your country. OK, we get that. But this is how an ancient people chooses to show its respect for a fallen soldier "whose name is known only to God." If you can't be open minded enough to appreciate another culture's traditions, then can you at least try to respect the reason for the ceremony?
Sorry, but they do look like twits walking in a twittish manner.

Michael, why don't you go there to express your opinion? Yeah, didn't think so
@@michaelyates5976 Every part of their uniforms, their moves and their stillness symbolizes certain specific things. Wether you respect this or not is of no interest to us. We had countless of enemies in the past and we still do, our feelings dont get hurt that easily to care about your opinion.

As one person put it, anyone calling these Evzones Clowns, should remember the evzone battalions are probably one of the worlds best Mountain fighting battalion units. These Evzone units kicked the Italians back into Albania during WWII until Benito needed to call in his buddy the Wall paper hanger, and the Ottoman Turks back into Asia.

The loud stomping on the ground with their hobnailed shoes is to waken the fallen dead and let them know that Greece is free.
