  • Jazz icon Herbie Hancock owns a one-of-a-kind 1963 Shelby Cobra. But he might not have bought it, if it wasn't for a rude salesperson.

    What a great story, it is so cool that it was Herbie's first new car he bought, and still owns to this day. I would never sell it.

    It isn't a "Shelby Cobra". It's a "Shelby AC Cobra". AC Cars Ltd. of Thames-Ditton, Surrey, south of London, had designed and built the car for years already. Carroll Shelby went to England for several weeks in 1961-62, while AC boss Charles Hurlock had the 260 V-8 he had received from Ford through Ol' Shel, fitted to an existing Ruddspeed AC Ace, that had come after the AC Ace-Bristol, and had the smaller grille with no sculpting around it, per previous Ace variants...and undertook other modifications to handle the increase in torque. Later, once the car started racing, Shelby and his team would feed AC racing experience suggestions to further strengthen/improve the car, which was being adapted to increasingly powerful engines. I know Americans like to glorify Ol' Shel as an automotive god, but his desire to bury AC's involvement within less of a year of having signed his contract with AC, in which he LEGALLY agreed to the car being AC-badged, and being marketed as the "Shelby AC Cobra", is quite revealing of human nature. He violated his contract of February 5, 1962, by removing the AC logo from the car, THAT YOU CLEARLY SEE ON THIS VERY EARLY EXAMPLE, and eventually went as far as to claim that AC had been but a mere "subcontractor" from whom he had "bought some parts". I have often read in American publications how generous Ol' Shel was in sharing credit. While this may have been true when it came to his Shelby American crew, it rings hollow as far as his English partner is concerned. These are the simple facts and they speak for themselves.

    Here it is 2024. Still owned by the original owner. It is numbered 6 ever made. Said to have over 200,000 miles by the owner. The owner is Herbie Hancock. What it probably worth is” PRICELESS “

    I heard Heribe has continuously owned a Cobra longer than any other person in the world, including Mr. Shelby before his passing.

    It says a lot about Herbie that he kept this car all these years. Have a listen to his "Takin' Off" album from 1962. He used the royalties from that album to buy this car. The album today doesn't sound dated at all. And Herbie just kept playing and writing better and better throughout the 60's, and beyond, went on to win multiple Grammy's, an Oscar, and he's now in his late 70's and he still plays goddamn great! And he still has his Cobra.

    I have been hoping for years that he still had this car, its very cool to know he still has it, and to see how well the car has been kept.

    In 1980 my dad bought a used car lot. A fellow had a 64 Cobra stored in the shop. My dad wanted it removed, but the car owner had no place to put it, so he offered it to us for $3000, my dad didn't buy it.🤔

      What a mistake that was. I bought my first car in 1980 and it was a 1965 Mustang C code fastback with a 289 engine and drum brakes for $1,500. :-)

    Is it me, or does that steering wheel look like it's off of an E-Type Jag?

    • @thomassmith2867
      @thomassmith2867 5 лет назад +1

      It is the same.. The A C Bristol, what the Cobra was based off of, used the same wheel( probably the same supplier as Jaguar, on certain parts)...

    Jay, you should know better. Shelby Cobras were made from 1962-67. Though the 289 model was 62-65.

      No- the Cobra was a 260, from 62-64,, and had a 289 5 bolt bellhousing, 64,to early 65.. and a 6 bolt bellhousing 289, through mid- year 66...

      Yeah, I'm pretty Jay knows they went on after 65....since he personally owns a SC 427.

    • @philipshilling8665
      @philipshilling8665 5 лет назад +2

      The 260 was used for the first seventy cars, in 1962. The 289 was used for the 1963-64 cars for the American market, and fitted into 1965 for the British, European and Australian market by AC Cars Ltd.
