My late Father was an Engineer out at The Cape during the Space Race years but took a job as Sales Manager/Service Manager for the Shelby cars at the big Ford dealer in Orlando Fl. for a couple years in the mid 60's...as a young boy I heard him tell this story several times at cocktail parties and backyard BBQ's: A dentist walked into the dealer one day and told the floor man he was interested in the Shelby Cobra 427, he was directed to my Dad. After speaking with the Dentist for several minutes and assessing his driving experience and financial wherewithal my Dad suggested the 289 Cobra would be a better choice. The customer was adamant that he wanted the 427 so my Dad said okay have a seat and I'll pull one around out front and we'll go for a drive. After taking the dear dentist on a very spirited test drive they returned to the dealer and the dentist stepped out of the car and white as a ghost said, perhaps you are right, maybe I should consider the 289 after all. To which my Dad answered...That WAS the 289.
@Timothy Rurak really, to have a shelby cobra personally owned by Carroll Shelby who upgraded it multiple times like a normal person would, you don't think that's worth alot of money, you have extremely high standards, by the way I don't remember them saying it was a different engine
Great opinion, in my opinion I would drive her everyday, add a few things, Rally Tires and Suspension, Racing Brembo Brakes, Titanium plate on bottom, remote lambo doors, 15 inch subwoofer, CB Radio and whip antenna, 😀 💘 and a Supercharger..
It’s not because it’s a cobra. It’s because of what it means. It was owned by your idol, you dreamed of owning one, and you want to go fast. When you sit in the drivers seat you share the happiness and memories of Carroll Shelby. The car misses Shelby, but it knows how happy the man who won the auction was and it will run like it did for the legend.

Yea exactly. That’s what’s annoying when you see a replica out driving or in a video driving and everyone is asking if it’s a “real” one. If you’re seeing one out in the wild you can pretty much be 99.9% sure it’s a replica or at best a licensed remake. What’s probably even worse is if this guy did take his 5 million dollar car to a car show the rest of us would be assuming it’s a kit car that was built for 30k.
Exactly!! Id rather buy 5 mil in gold...investing in a car is super risky especially now we are at the end of the ICE era What "next guy" will there be for old iron? Im not seeing it, younger people want nothing to do with out "stone age" cars. Shame Ill be dead when musclecar prices become realistic again it will happen.
Can’t wait till I see him out on the road with it! I’ll be in my 1981 Elcamino cracked windshield broken window a couple of dents with no seat just a milk crate to sit on! Oh yeah I almost forgot no insurance either! Bring it baby I’ll show you somethin!
I like Cobras but if you can't drive it on the street and enjoy it you might just as well buy a Picasso and hang it on the wall. After all impressing others with how much you spent is what it is all about. NFN but that same car sold for 5.5M a year or so back. So somebody lost 100k plus the cost of restoration.
Let’s not forget it’s about the cars not the dollar amount!! Mecum and Barrett Jackson focuses on the money not the car love them both but let’s not forget!

I dont know pretty risky today if you think about it. For decades there have always been the "next guys" younger buyers that dig these. Not so today, Gen X last of the mohicans and most could never afford it. WIth EVS becoming commonplace I think that amount is a huge gamble Rare car and all but I think way way overvalued.

There’s less than 50 original left so it was worth it.
You can buy happiness, and its in the form of a Shelby Cobra owned by the man himself
100%. It doesn’t get better than that!!!

Once I saw his RM, I knew this guy was going to get the car. What an awesome ride and piece of Americana and automotive history.
What an absolute gorgeous car!

Think of it as an alternative asset class investment. Simple. More fun than buying a bunch more shares of TSLA.
This is an investment, resell in 5 years and make a few hundred thousand.

That’s my Dad, last week I mounted a kerb and wrapped it around a tree. Let’s just say he’s not talking to me atm.
What does Late Father mean?
When I was a kid that was the only car I cared about, that and the Australian Ford XY GTHO.
Fell in love with that car as a kid. Was on the cover of a 70s car mag.
Then I saw my first Pantera...oh poverty sux!
Saw a club meet of those I dont know if they were legit or kit cars but they were intimidating in person for sure
Probably got a pretty healthy 427, apparently, that's a reasonably fast and BRUTAL 'chine
Don’t forget the 10% commission charge, that brings the total price to $5,940,000.
This is an incredible car, but that hammer price......
Nice color
It's good to be rich, money well spent.
Imagine the camera getting too close and scratching the car.
Its all fixable.
Beautiful car
Is gona seat where The Man and the legend seats Before him.....
Dang, 5.4 million for a car that will never be driven again
Wheels & Tires are too small for the wheel well arches. It's out of proportion... Other than that, the color and presentation is beautiful.
Beautiful car owned by my hero, who told Ferrari where to go......
Yep.....this Cobra was owned by the man who buried Ferrari in 1966.
Wonder if it's like Elvis's BMW, where nothing of the original car remains ? That would suck...
Was Legendary the seller?
I hope some of my engine swap cars reach this value one day!
I don't know that it was possible to 'over spend' on that car! Just has to be careful that he doesn't kill himself in it!
you really think he'll drive it hard? Probably going in his collection to admire.
It’s a beautiful car but I can’t see paying that much for any car.

I really don't feel like that paint color is correct though
I actually love it
The guy who brought it used his play money.
surprised it didnt make about 8 million, ferrari 250 GTOs go for around 20million
Wooowwww!!! 😍😍🔥🔥🔥♥️
No side pipes?
They could be ordered with undercar exhaust. Sidepipes an cost a little power depending.
I’m surprised to hear that Shelby put an automatic transmission in it at one point. A cobra isn’t a cobra without a manual.
Carrol had a 289 Cobra with an automatic too.
These guys sound like their talking with their hands over their mouths lol
Or with masks on?.
Mouth full of marbles
Probably would have been worth double that amount had it not been restored.
Shelby had butchered it basically. It wouldn't have been worth half that.
That's the color I painted my '76 Spitfire... 38 years ago.
.
Who the heck were the owners that bought Shelby’s personal car and then changed out engines/transmissions and paint?!
