- Imagine you're Ken Miles, 60 years ago, driving a 1964 FIA 289 Shelby Cobra on the racetrack. Nicole joins Cobra icon Lynn Park at Willow Springs International Raceway as a guest of the Cobra Owners Club, where Nicole experiences solo driving the legendary one-of five, 450-horsepower race car. For comparision, Lynn and son Steve offer Nicole another bucket-list thrill-a 500+ horsepower 2010 Special Competition Continuation 427 Shelby Cobra. Emboldened with a new Simpson fire suit, Nicole experiences the difference in throttle response, gearing, and torque on the track.
Check out EPISODE 20, featuring Lynn's mind-blowing collection of ORIGINAL COBRAS: • ORIGINAL COBRAS Part 1...
MORE ABOUT LYNN PARK: Lynn's long-time relationship with Carroll Shelby and Shelby American began in 1962. Now a legend in his own right, Lynn is today's living authority on Shelby Cobras, owning more than 50 originals over 6 decades. Lynn and his two sons, Steve and Tim, regularly race three 289s from the collection and can be seen at historic vintage racing events around the country.

No silly music, no boring voice over, just an amazing V8 soundtrack and great camera angles, you know your audience, thank you so much. What a epic day that must have been!
It was awesome!! Thank you for watching...we're glad you enjoyed!!
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour So grefull for you to let the cars talk for the self on the track. As always top film.
'right ?' -i could feel every grain of sand, the vrooming of the engine- (::).. [wauwie]
I was going to comment this but took the words from my mouth
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour awesome video. Are you going to do a future video in a Ford GT40?
Thank you, again, Lynn for an unreal, bucket-list opportunity to drive two Cobras on the track. I was high for two days after shooting this episode... came home just dazed by what we had just filmed! For those who didn't catch the first episode with Lynn, check it out here: ruclips.net/video/w2XFarhnSnU/видео.html Please subscribe if you haven't already. ❤ All of you reading this, and watching our channel, make experiences like this possible. ❤
Thank you for sharing your bucket list. You are a inspiration to many! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
My first experience with a Cobra was the Gumball Rally movie back in 1976 when I was 16. I was hooked. A couple years later, friends and I went to a huge car auction at the Seattle Coliseum. Wandering around Porsches, Ferraris and other European exotics was great fun. And then my dream came true, there it was, a blue 427 Cobra. It creates such an emotion inside of me to this day. In fact, 3 days ago, 3 replicas drove down Main Street of Bozeman Montana and my heart started beating a bit faster. The only other to get my heart beating like that is my beautiful wife! Great video as always Cheers! Cheers!
Thank you! The drone shots are awesome 👍
Mr Park letting one of his Cobra's slither out of his snake pit for Nicole to drive, a true privilege. And Nicole, you truly did the car justice, i think Shelby and Miles were smiling as you drove.
Thank you so much!! We appreciate you watching!!
It's like hitting the lottery, you could sell tickets with the chance to drive these as the prize and make millions.
The possessive of Cobra is Cobra's, the plural is Cobras. Predictive text always puts apostrophes in the wrong places. AI is artificial but it sure isn't intelligent.
Bucket-list experience right there.
We are all envious, Nicole. 🙂

@@3ducs You came here to worry about grammar?! You should get out more!
I got goosebumps watching this one ...Rest in peace Carroll and Ken 🙏 thanks for the memories...great job Nicole ❤🥰🏴☠️🏁
Thank you, JohnnyO!
Best episode! Not only goosebumps😂 The 289 was grazy…, listening the 427 on the track is like an inferno❤
Very cool rides, thank you!
That little 289 is exactly the way I would love to own one. Used and still a killer car !!!! Love ya Girl !!!!
Thank you!! We appreciate you watching!!
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour I have a meager 2008 Bullitt Mustang but it is a salvage title and I share it with kids at every car show. Get me 1 lap drive in that 289 and you have all the support you want! Hot car and a hot lady!
The 289 sounds better, imo.
I remember reading a story some years ago. Could've been posted here on YT. Commenter's dad was a Ford High Performance salesman at a Ford dealer. A dentist came in saying he wanted to test drive and buy a 427 cobra. His dad steered him toward a 289 cobra but the dentist was adamant he wanted the 427 and wouldn't take no for an answer. So he agreed, but first he was going to take him for a test ride in a 427. When they got back the dentist was noticeable shaken and said, "I think you're right. I probably need to check out the 289 cobra" to which his dad said, "This is the 289 cobra." lol
Nicole is just one of the coolest women on the planet
Thank you!! That's very nice!!
Can she come to The Bend in South Australia, and do a long lap?
@@petermoller8337 I'm not sure what The Bend is, but I'm the first woman to finish King of the Hammers... does that count?! would love to come to Oz one day... so many great cars there!
When you're a genuine, humble, well informed true believer like Nicole, people like Lynn love to share their passion with you. Thanks to you both for bringing us along on another great adventure.
Thank you so much for watching...we're glad you enjoyed it!!
I would give up a body part to spend an afternoon with Mr. Park. It's about the cars, but also the legendary history of the Cobra and he has the details! I've had a boner for Cobras for just about 60 years now. My favorite sports car since the days of the Honey West TV in 1963-1964. I've never ridden in one. 😢
Wow that sound! No turbo, no super charger, just pure muscle. Gets me warm and fuzzy.
Cool!! Thank you for watching!!
Nothing beats the sound and feel of a big block ground pounder. Why run a small block at 8500 rpms when you can do with a big block at 4500. Massive torque.
I'm not sure, but I think you might have the greatest job in the world. Great interviews, great driving and genuine enthusiasm. This is a great RUclips channel.
Wow, thank you! All of us at Detour truly appreciate that!! Glad you enjoyed!!
I have drooled over Cobras since their inception. Any and all of them. Once again Ms. Johnson finds another opportunity for us old guys to live our passions through her!
We're so glad you enjoyed watching...much appreciate it!!
Sure, I’m enthralled by the cars, but I can’t get over how gorgeous you look in your race suit, Nicole!
She suits up VERY well..undoubtedly.
Your reaction to his nasty black Cobra in the garage when you started it up and rev'd made me heart smile. What content, again!
Thank you..glad you enjoyed watching!
I was smiling right along with you! What an amazing experience for you! The "fly-by" sounds are awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Wow! It was wonderful to experience the 289 and 427 Cobras back-to-back. That 289 would be my pick, even with its leaf springs in the back. That 427 sounded like a truck, didn't it? Wow! Mahalo for your video! Aloha!
Aloha!! Thank you so much for watching!! We appreciate the comment!!
I thought the same thing, the 289 sounded much better to me. Not that the tone matters in racing lol
Never mind the back, it's the leaf spring at the front that worries me 😉
@@johnbriggs3916 I'd forgotten about the front. I've become so inured to C4, C5, C6 and C7 Corvettes having this type of suspension that I'd totally spaced out the AC cars had that, too.
@jimcabezola3051 Yes, the mk III Cobra with the 427 engine changed to coil over shocks all round in 1965 -- 55 years before the Corvette 😅 The front transverse leaf spring is the reason the engine is back behind the front axle -- making the car technically mid-engined.
The small block Cobra is a car of my dreams. Everything about it was perfect.
Glad you enjoyed watching!! Thank you!!
This video made me realize I am a hopeless engine noise junkie and wow was my addiction fed today. Thank you, thank you, thank you for those two long, uninterrupted driving sessions without voice over or unnecessary music. I have to agree with Lynn, Nicole is a rockstar.
Thank you!! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
OMG! I loved just the sound of the race car around the track, great to see you back in a cobra 🐍 the suit is FIRE!! Wow Simpson keeping you classy ❤❤
Thank you!! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
When she was shifting the 427, did anyone else hear the soundtrack from Bullitt when McQueen was shifting his mustang chasing the Charger? Awesome video Nicole. Your genuine enthusiasm radiates to us. Keep the awesome videos coming please.
Good ear and eye Autocar87. Bullitt's audio and picture cutting are a major inspiration for 'Track Born' and many other Detour episodes 😉
Yes, bullitt was running a “mighty 390.”
Someone was comparing the “big’un 427” noise to a truck. I’m thinking more 1967 NASCAR or CanAm, maybe.
Yes I did!
My dad had a chance to buy a 289 Cobra from a guy who was going through a divorce in the '60's. He chose to buy his shop instead. He believed 289 Cobra as a car was the perfect blend of power, weight, and balance. 60 years later and the Cobra is still a benchmark automobile.
Yes it is!! Thank you so much for sharing with us!!
......as if in Ken Miles' footsteps....massive thx to Johnsons & Parks for making this video happen🙏☀️👍
After your tour of his shop, I didn’t think things could get any better. Well, I was wrong. What an episode. Those must be my two most meaningful dream cars ever. That FIA car was built the year I was born. This is simply and amazing video. Thank you so very much.
You're welcome!! We appreciate you watching..glad you enjoyed!!
Content like this is why RUclips exists. Absolute perfection. I was thinking yesterday it was about time for a new episode and Nicole and her team did not disappoint. And Nicole: You belong in front of a camera. You have “it”. Charm. Charisma. And you are GOOD! Well done.
Thank you...that's very nice! We appreciate you watching..glad you enjoyed!!
Nice to see somebody as humble as you driving these historic cars 👍nobody better than you to represent thanks for the video😊
Thank you!! We appreciate you watching!!!
The 1964 FIA 289 is an absolute beauty, there's something so pure and soulful about every scratch, nick, and wear spot on that car. This was absolutely what they were meant for, to be used, enjoyed, and raced, not to sit in a garage 99.9% of the time. It was so cool to see this car in action still doing its thing all these years later. Thank you for the awesome video!!
Thank you for watching...we're glad you enjoyed!!
Old is definitely Gold..❤❤❤
Yes it is!! Thanks for watching!!
What a fantastic experience! Getting to drive the FIA 289 AND the 427! And I just saw on Facebook where you met my friend Lucky Buggah and Porkchop the BEAT CANCER bus! He's got some neat vehicles (including a VW powered can-am looking racer)! He'd be a fun episode of Detour!
What I'd give to drive that Cobra around Willow Springs!? I am incredibly jealous of you, Nicole! The sound of that engine gave me goose bumps!
Thank you!! We're glad you could enjoy the ride with us!!
Beautiful sound. Never get tired of hearing those engines. The 289 is the best of the two
Glad you enjoyed watching! Thanks for the comment!!

What a great experience. Thanks for taking us along.
Our pleasure for sure!! Glad you enjoyed the ride!!
I hate to admit this on the internet, but watching (and hearing) Nicole lap both, I prefer the sound of that nasty "little" 289. I wonder what Nicole will say!?
Looks like she didn’t want to comment… I agree the 289 sounds gave a more race car feeling.
@@mikemoxley9477 Oh I'm not afraid to comment! I prefer the 289... it's quickly becoming my favorite. Not only for its pedigree, but for its sound and throttle response.
The 289 with every rock chip, old stickers, roll bar nicks, and then , coming back with a windshield full of dead bugs, that’s a race car. And beautiful.
Man that sounds so good! What an iconic legend.
Congratulations, we can see your appreciation for driving one of 5 cars in the world!

Kudos to your drone pilot. Great shots from the sky. I'm surprised that the drone was able to keep up.

For me, the sound of the FIA going around the track was the best. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to take a few laps in either. What an amazing day. Thanks for posting!

I keep coming back to watch this video, those laps with just the engine noise are simply gorgeous....👍
This show should win a cinematography award for this episode ! WOW
We're so glad you like it...thank you!!!
I, too, love the responsiveness of the small block Ford V-8. Your video definitely captures the spirit of both big and small block Shelby-AC Cobras, and kudos to you and your team for this excellent presentation.
Not being kin to the Rockefeller family, I bought my Cobra replica kit in 1987...took 3.5 years to complete as I paid cash along the way. Even worked several part-time jobs to buy parts and worked on friend's cars to help finance my "dream"...never took a penny out of the household budget. Every nut and bolt I put on the car and rebuilt the engine myself, but I did not rebuild its Toploader 4-speed or the 3.50 Traction-Lok rear end. Being a "soldier in the war on poverty", I even squirted the paint on the car myself. Museum quality? Nope. Concours winner? Not even close! Car was built to be driven and not a garage queen.
Most fun part of the build process was the circle of friends which was created. We called ourselves the Cobra Clan. I surrounded myself with friends (Ford enthusiasts, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical engineers, etc.) who knew more than I. When there were questions about each step, they were there to offer their advice. If two of them agreed, that was the pathway forward.
Strange as it may seem, when I took my completed creation for its inaugural drive which was exhilarating, I was left with an empty feeling as I sat on the garage floor against the closed garage door. I was full of emotions as I listened to the hot metal "tinking" as it cooled and smelling the off gassing of the painted engine and side pipes. Popping open my first beer I tried to take inventory of these emotions. Upon opening the second beer, it finally struck me. It was the journey (build process), not the destination! No wonder why so many gearheads build a custom car, sell it at a loss, only to repeat the process.
Thank you so much for sharing with us!! Love your story!!
Nicole, this must have been an absolute thrill for you and it’s so incredible of Mr. Park and his sons to let you bring us this episode. You did an awesome job behind the wheel, enjoying it, yet showing such respect. He’s 100% right, you are a rock star! I’ve been watching them run their cars at Laguna Seca for decades and the FIA car is that one that always draws me in. Sure, all of the cars are wonderful, but the history, the well-earned visible wear, and the dedicated maintenance on that one really shows their passion for these cars and tells such a great story.
Thank you both for starting my day off so well. I can’t wait for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion next month!
Thank you so much!! It was an amazing experience and one I will never forget!! We're very grateful to Lynn for giving us this beautiful day!! Glad you enjoyed watching!

My Dad was a Rocket Engineer and Team Manager at Cape Canaveral from '57 thru '76 with GE Aerospace but he took a couple year break and took the Sales and Service Manager job for the Shelby cars at Heintzelman Ford in downtown Orlando i believe in '65 - '67. I heard him tell this story several times as a young boy at backyard BBQ's and cocktail parties: a dentist walks into the showroom and tells the receptionist he is interested in a 427 Cobra, he is directed to my Dad. My Dad speaks with him for several minutes to judge is driving experience and financial wherewithal and suggests the 289 would be a better option. The dentist insists he wants the 427 so my Dad asks him to have a seat in the showroom and he would prep one and bring it around for a test drive. My Dad pulls up out front and takes the dentist on a very "sporty" test drive. When they get back to the showroom the dentist, who is white as a ghost, gets out and announces that perhaps my dad is right, he should consider the 289 afterall. To which my Dad replies, That was the 289.
Awesome story!! Thanks for sharing with us!!
The video of the driving was over the top. Awesome footage and editing. Of course the driving was pretty terrific as well. You are one lucky lady.
Thank you so much!! We're glad you enjoyed watching!!
You have great taste in cars!! I’m Building a Untouched barn find 1972 Trans Am with a racing history. It still has tire marks on it from racing. The more I come across these unrestored rare cars, worn with perfections; the more I realize I am happy I decided to not restore it and build it back mechanically sound. Cheaper to do, and less stressful as you don’t care if it’s not perfect. I don’t even mind if I make my own tool marks, as it adds to car’s history. I was forced to add a shine new master cylinder and booster, and I already miss the patina of the old one. Keep the awesome videos coming-
Super cool!! It's inspiring that you do what makes you happy!! Thank you for watching this episode!!
Coming from a car that revs to 9300, it's hilarious to me to think of 7000rpm as "high rpm". I tend to think of anything below 7k as "farm equipment" 😂

No body parts exposed just to gain more views and likes. there reason that I say this, because there is so many videos on RUclips that the females expose their body part for more views and likes, that every time a female is a in a video I just skip it. Nicole, this video was AMAZING. Back when I was a Sr. in High School (1965) I went to a Cobra Dealer on Broadway near Downtown in San Antonio Texas. I was 'drooling' on a 427 Cobra when one of the Sales guys came out to talk, I guess he figured I had a rich dad...anyway in our discussion about the car he popped me a question I will never forget. "Do you want to go for a ride in this car?" He said he was taking it out for a spin as it had sat for about a week and he wanted to exercise it. I couldn't get the YES out of my mouth any faster! He drove it out the door to the showroom and I climbed in to the passenger seat. We went down Broadway and turned to get up on the nearby highway. I'll never forget the acceleration, the car was a Beast! I've had several fast rides since then, Mustang Cobras, Camaro's, and a 1972 Black Norton Motorcycle Commando Combat (which did a sub 12 second quarter mile, 11.72 sec, 148 Mph) but nothing ever felt as powerful as the Cobra. Back then they were priced under $4000, if only I could get one for that today.
I retired at the end of 2020 and I've been thinking of getting a Replica (can't afford an original). This video gives me the Urge!!! Thanks Again for reviving my memories! By the way, Carol Shelby came to Randolph Air Force Base for a celebration, can't remember the year, he was an enlisted pilot, one of the few during WW II. I got his autograph in one of my Ford Mustang Books and the Picture of him signing it. That was amazing as well!
