- Who takes a Sawzall to a classic car and rips it up the middle? Jim Stabe did the unthinkable when he set out to widen his tiny 1966 MGB British roadster he'd owned for decades. After 17 years of fabricating all the tools and components to build the car, the blazing red Wide MGB emerged as a head-turning work of wide body art with a supercharged 535 horsepower water-methanol injected LT1 Camaro engine boasting 550 foot-pounds of torque riding on C4 Corvette suspension. Nicole discovers all the details above and below the restomod pro touring Wide MGB and takes Jim for a supercharged trip around sunny San Diego.
MORE ABOUT THE WIDE MGB: Jim Stabe's hand-crafted creation is currently offered for sale. Specifications and contact details can be found at jimstabe.wixsi...
OCTOBER 2023: The Wide MGB was sold on Bring a Trailer: bringatrailer....

Well I’m British and I’ve restored a couple of MGBs but I’m in awe of Jims engineering talent. That is stunning and certainly hasn’t ticked me off. Bravo sir.
Awesome!! Thank you for watching..glad you like it!
Despite the fact that there's only around 10% of the original car, it still looks very much like an MGB [albeit on steroids, lol]
I guess it shouldn't bother you since they did the same with the first Morris Minor
Thank you for watching!!
I am British and love the car.
Some modified cars are abominations but this MG/GM keeps the look and is done extremely well.
Jim, you are an incredibly talented, patient craftsman. Thanks for contacting Nicole and introducing us to your amazing car.
Thank you for watching and the kind words
We're so glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you for watching!
Incredibly talented and patient to see the fruits of his 17 year build, Wow!!!
I saw this and wished Jim was my Grandad ( maybe he'd let me drive the GM!)
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour "WE" LOVE what you do in America - we have a huge love affair with all things American when it comes to custom/muscle cars etc.
Jim's creation manages to undo all the worst aspects of classic cars BOTH sides of the pond. It's a Viper AND a Cobra and an E type and of course an MG - but with none of their flaws.
WANT ONE!
It's unfortunate that we don't have more Craftsmen like Jim getting the recognition he SO rightly deserves. He needs to tour High Schools to show the kids of today what's possible to do with your hands. Thank God for Nicole for bringing this incredible story to the masses.
Most high schools have done away with their shop programs so we have a generation of kids who don't know how to make or fix anything.
Thank you for your service sgt
Thank you so much for watching!! We appreciate it!!
brilliant idea.
you are correct - Jim is a very rare man !
Excellent idea. This man is unbelievable.
As a Brit who's driven MGB's in the past I'm amazed at the professional job you've done on this car. Total respect for the time and dedication that went into this masterpiece.
Thank you for watching...glad you approve!!
Thanks Robin
Watched pretty much all of your episodes Nicole, and what I realize is that as much as you are finding these awesome pieces of ingenuity, it is actually the discovery of the amazing guys that created them, that deserves a special acknowledgement. Your show is a time capsule to an era when America was full of these madmen with a sense of humor and the “can do spirit”…which made the country so great. The show is an mixture of Spirit of St Louis…meets Carol Shelby…meets the mad professor from “Back to the Future”…
There is an endless repository of creations in our 50 states…inevitably also on the water, underneath it or up in the air. A lot of the creative spirit in America may have grey hair these days..but it still has swagger and a quiet determination that has always been the hallmark of this country. Thanks for bringing them to us while endowing all the episodes with your bouncy, boundless enthusiasm for this “stay crazy” crowd.
Wow...thank you so much for the kind words!! All of us here at Detour sincerely appreciate!! We're so glad you enjoy our channel!!

BRAVO Jim, I worked for BMC in the early 70s in the UK . I have seen many customised MGBs over the years but yours is without doubt the best . What a Gem .

Thank you George
I'm a brit, i love the MG conversion . i think your channel is awesome. You show such passion. You can not improve on perfection, so please change nothing. You're a breath of fresh air, nicole..
I appreciate that so much!! Thank you for watching. We're glad you enjoyed it!!
Fellow Brit here. I've wasted too much money on modifying cars over the years. This modified MG is phenomenal.
I’m an Ozzie who first drove an MGB in ‘63 aged 18 and this is an excellent example of re-engineering a classic car with a vision and along the way Jim has adapted, adopted, fabricated parts, designed and made tools to complete that next process using technology of today but maintaining the simplicity of the original car.
He is a delicate balance of those that have vision of the future, think outside the box, challenging situations are met head on, despair is not a word or feeling in his mind, he’s an engineer, toolmaker, craftsman and inventor.
I’m also one who will make something when time is not a factor, even though I could go and buy it “off the shelf” and I truly admire the skills of this remarkable man.
Have fun driving your one of a kind car Jim and you have my highest respect 👍👍👌👌
Congratulations on a wonderful winning build.
Thank you everyone
As a British person who has restored & raced modified MG's I absolutely love what Jim has done he is a real engineer who just loves life and I'm so envious of his workshop.
So its a massive thumbs up from me 😊

Yeah ol Jim improved the hell out of that MG for sure.

Incredibly engineered. Well done.
Pommie here, and I think the time, effort and dedication put into this project is simply astounding. Looking at it from an MG perspective I just cant see the original car and cannot compare either, this is in a league of its own and should be appreciated as such. Great work from our comrades over the pond.

I know that as a Brit, and a fan of MG's B and Midget, I should be mad but.... The skills Jim taught himself and the quality of the build, who could be mad about it?
Keep'em coming Nicole 👍
Thank you...glad you enjoyed watching.
The best thing EVER to happen to a MGB
I cannot think of any genuine MG enthusiast who could be mad at what Jim has done to an MGB. Exceptional talent, vision and skill. Top class toolmaker and designer too.
In my own way on a far lower level, after my own "creation" or breathing life into an MG someone has given up on, although now I've lost count of the times, I shall never tire of the joyous moment when you turn the key or press the button and that dead engine bursts into life.
All for the love of it. Clearly Jim experiences that in spades be it his tool making or MGB creation. .
Nicole had way too much fun driving this car! Not enough good can be said about the man that built this car. I would really like to know how many people on this earth could pull this off almost completely by themselves. Plus, fabricate their own tools and fixtures and get it right. I'll bet darn few. One of a kind car built by a one of a kind man. Way over the top! This has to be one of the best car videos I have ever watched! Thanks Nicole for your effort in this as it couldn't have been better. Wow!

I could not agree more. This car is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen. But I do have to say although the car is absolutely incredible the man who built it and built all the tools to build it is absolutely one-of-a-kind, possibly in the entire world and that is my most sincere thought put into words! I am a Scottish Brit and I love this car. The whole package is just brilliant and completely shades the nutty efforts by British Leyland when they dropped a V8 into the MGB in 1974. Over time I have restored other cars myself but this sets a new standard...and he started before anyone knew the word Restomod. Great work.

Your GM MGB can be summed up in one word; awesome.
Just one thing missing to my mind; why no seatbelts in that road rocket, a convertible no less?
Brit here. As an owner of an MGB, I love what you've done with this car, Jim. It's absolutely fabulous. Nicole is correct though, there are people who'd say "You can't do that to an MG". But, there were over half a million of these made and they're still not rare. This is one that's been saved from the junk yard and turned into a work of art. Bravo.
Nothing's sacred here. I just made the car a lot more rare than it was.
Thank you so much for watching...glad you like it!!
I’m English & I think that’s a beautifully modified MG. The original car is just too small & underpowered for modern day life..this guy has basically made an old car, more useable & practical(ish). I’d sooner see these classic British cars converted in this way, than rotting away in a garage or scrapyard. They just don’t make cars or fellas like that any more..well done Jim 👏👏👍
Thank you for watching...we're glad you approve!!
People been sticking small block V8s in MGs for decades. In fact the factory began the trend in 1973 with the MGB GT V8 as far as I know. When a car gets this heavily modified though, it really becomes something else altogether. I love it, but I’m not sure it’s an MG anymore. I think the owner/engineer is right in labelling it a ‘GM ‘rather than an ‘MG’. Coincidentally, the original MG factory V8 was a GM Buick designed engine that the Brits bought the manufacturing rights of from GM.
Love the car and the craftsmanship is amazing.Thank you for sharing
@@Crazy_Worlds Costello began professional Rover V8 conversions to the MGB before the factory adopted it
@@SamInSomerset I was installing a 215 Buick (same as Rover) in this very car at the same time Costello was doing his in the UK. I put an XKE Jag IRS in mine which made it a really nice handling and braking car
As requested I am commenting from the UK. I am so impressed with what has been done to the car. Of course it is analogous to sawing her Majesty in half, but what a tour de force of mechanical engineering. Congratulations this is truly truly impressive.
Thanks Stuart. Not to worry, your royals are safe from widening
Thank you for watching...we're so glad you approve!!
The math and work that went into this alone is impressive enough. To execute it, and not have it look like garbage is another. Very well done!! He took "wide body" to another level.

Nicole isn't just a pretty face. She knows exactly what questions to ask and she knows her way around a special high performance car. Very well done.
Huge congratulations from the UK! MGBs are the stereotypical classic car in the UK and whilst many have succumbed to the dreaded tin worm there are more than enough to let one transmogrify into such a special special!
It's one thing to stuff an old car with horsepower but quite another to make a unique creation that is clearly inspired by the original, maintaining it's elegance whilst giving supercars a hard time!

MG's were built for British roads which aren't nearly as wide as one's in the US, and were a low cost sports car. A car like this one would have cost more than most peoples houses
I totally agree, and I'm from the UK. I see it as an improvement a bit like BMW
has done with the traditional Mini sort of retro modern look. They did sell
the MGB GT over here with a 3.5 litre Buick engine produced in the UK , but not
massive bhp
MGB were good for UK roads, probably not US as it would look too small, where as this fine example is perfect!

Thanks Russell
Thank you!! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!
Amazing alteration. Totally Americanized our MG but it is a beauty and i particularly like the 50-50 weight distribution which allows for that visual grip on the road. Good job Jim and thanks, Nicole for showing it off 😊
Thanks for watching the video
We're so glad you enjoyed watching..much appreciated!
I’m a Brit and a fan of classic cars and hot rods, I can’t imagine anybody like myself being upset with what Jim has built there, it’s a credit to him, besides, as well as still having plenty of good and bad MGB’s still on the roads and for sale for modest amounts, they still make the bodyshells so they can be reproduced by anyone with the skills👍
Thank you for watching...we appreciate the comment!!
I want to be just like Jim when I grow up! The concept of this car is ingenious, it reminds me of the TVR Cebra that you can drive in CA. The TVR Power 12 was a dream car of mine growing up, it was essentially an 800hp dodge Viper built in England. I think Jim’s widening work really looks natural. I’d say it looks factory. We have a Sprite in the barn that Nate has been wanting to build, maybe jim can bring his sawzall by so I can fit some R888s on it and an extra digit on the HP! I love this one!
The secret is to NOT grow up. Thanks for the comments.
I was thinking TVR as well
@@JimStabe don’t worry it’s not a secret that I’m a toys r us kid
Tyler...I agree with Jim...No growing up!!!
Beware of adulthood.... it's a trap!!
Absolutely savage!!! This is taking a classic and making it better without losing the look or feel of the original. Well done Mr. Stabe!!! Thanks Nicole for bringing us this video.
Thanks Cary, glad you liked it.
You're welcome!! Thank you for watching!!
🇬🇧 This Brit in Britain thinks it's great. Absolutely fantastic. 🇬🇧
I wanted to do a body widening on a Mini when I was younger, but never got round to it.
You've done a great job.
Never too late, go for it
Thanks for watching!
I have the feeling that Jim can build anything if he had enough time for it. Incredible job..!! The video with the car in motion captured the feeling of weight and speed, great job with the cameras and edition. Nicole, as always did an excellent job with the guest..😎
Thank you...we're so glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks
Making a car longer is one thing but widening a car is something I can’t even contemplate ,,incredible job sir ,
We agree!! Thank you for watching!
I have a sawzall, so I could cut the car in half, but that's it!
As a Brit my MBGT never went like that nor sounded like that even with a PECO exhaust on it , you just brought back all my teenage memorys back thank you ! This guy has gifted hands very very impressed with the workmanship of his thinking and finishing completly pro in its execution .
Thank you Misha
We agree!! Thank you so much for watching!!
My dad had six or seven MGBGTs when I was growing up. I learned to drive one when I was 11 or 12, and spent countless hours tearing them apart and putting them back together. I wonder who would be “pissed off” by this car. I’m not. It’s badass, and Jim is awesome!
We're glad you like it!! Thanks for watching!!
The British design & engineering that went into creating the MG has certainly been adhered to by this man's vision of what he wanted not forgetting his immense talent, a true hand made gem of a car built by a man with an eye for detail.
I just love the thing❤
Thank you so much for watching!! We're glad you like it!
Thank you very much
I’m blown away with how much passion went into this build, just an epic result. Great content!
Thank you for watching!
Labour of love ❤
I would love to spend the day with Jim, I'm certain he has stories for days!! Seems to be a happy, kind soul.
Drop by and chat sometime
We agree!! Thank you for watching!
As a Brit, I have to say that is an amazing car crafted by by an amazing guy, I wish MG had made one like this when I was in my younger years. The nearest we came was the MGB GT V8 which was quite tame by comparison.
Thank you
We appreciate you watching!!
Can you imagine how something so simple, so basic and yet so powerful would sell if it were indeed brought out again? If nothing else, it is a lesson in classy styling, which seems a truly lost art as well.
Jim is a genius, Incredible achievement, I don't have enough qualifiers to describe all the work done on this MG/GM. Congratulations, I'm French and I think MG should have released it like that. Thank you both for the video ❤
Our pleasure! We're so glad we could share this amazing car with our viewers!!
Too wide for old English roads and streets, especially in 1968. And for those homes that have a garage, this would never fit.
@@ralphclarkyou'd build a garage just for the car.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 almost nobody has room for a wide garage
My father loved the MGB and made it my 1st car, he dreamed his whole life about building a V-8 MGB and couldn't have imagined this work of art.
Thanks Tod
Wow Nicole, what a seriously awesome car, and seriously awesome job he's done on it too. Truly beautiful!
Thank you for watching..glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Gary
I am so green with envy over Jim's madly creative skills and that little beast he engineered and fabricated. My hat's off to him. Both he and the car are special.
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Jim is one talented guy , im a brit and not usually an mg fan but this build is a thing of beauty and of course muscle !!
Thanks Billy
Thank you for watching...glad you approve!!
Some of the nicest, best built, and tastefully designed vehicles; are handbuilt in craftsmans' garages. Although I enjoy watching, and appreciate the work produced by those high end shops, there's just something gratifying about 'that guy down the street', building a one off vehicle. Well done!
So true!! Thank you so much for watching!
Appreciate you watching, thanks
Way to nail the shifts Nicole. You're an artist and so is the builder
Thank you..much appreciated!!
Thanks John
What a fantastic car Jim, I hope you make some more cars like this. Nicole, outstanding video, I love your enthusiasm and appreciation for the work involved in making this car and your general love of cars in general. Thank you.
We're so glad you enjoyed watching!! Thank you!
Wow! One of the first cars I learned to drive (13 years old) was a yellow MGB my neighbor would take me to a cemetery on Saturdays and let me drive. Jim couldn't have contacted a better crew to showcase his creation than you, and your team, Nicole! Thanks Jim for sharing this incredible masterpiece.
Thank you so much!! We're glad you enjoyed watching!!
Watching from England here. I love it!
He's used his incredible skills to produce an outstanding looking car.
And it's not sacrilegious or anything. Over here, MGBs are fairly common so it's not like it was a super rare car to start with.
We're so glad you like it...thank you for watching!
Inspiring craftsmanship Mr.Jim. Having been in the process of restoring an already beautiful 1965 MG 1100.. your work is both uplifting and encouraging.
Thank you both!!
I'm glad you liked it, thanks.
Thank you so much for the comment!! Glad you enjoyed watching!
Insanely creative masterpiece! Thanks Jim and Nicole for sharing!!!👍👍💕💕💕
Glad you like it...we appreciate you watching!!
Thank you
The finish on this build is incredible, especially for someone who has never done this work by trade and made his own tools. What a find. Having driven a few MG's in the 70's & 80's I'd have to do a serious double take if I saw this on the road.
Yes...we agree!! Thank you for watching!
Great feature! My favorite thing about these vids is you dive into the details on these builds which makes you truly appreciate the effort from a true craftsman like Jim. What a machine!
Thank you..we're so glad you enjoyed watching!
Pretty amzing car, and to learn that Jim made most of the parts, including the tools to make them is pretty awesome. Very well done. Love the red!
Thanks JD
We're glad you enjoyed watching...thank you!
The MGB that MG should have built from day 1, Beautiful, love your channel Nicole 👍❤
Thanks so much! We appreciate that!!
yep English sports cars of the day were narrow and somewhat gutless to be honest 😆
@@davidcross6990 Thanks to emission controls, mainly for export markets, no names no pack drill, MGBs got slower with each "improvement". Back in the 60s early 80s, had a succession of four MGBs in total. The last two MGBGTs. The very early first one's owned were by far the fastest. Used to cruise it hood down ( hood .. that's UK speak for the DHC soft top ) at 100mph+ on UK Motorways until they brought in an overall NSL ( National Speed Limit ) of 70 mph.
Now many Brits creep about at 70 mph, usually less in very powerful cars capable of over twice the NSL, all mainly built in Germany or in fact elsewhere most anywhere apart from the UK. Those that don't drive butt ugly heavyweight SUVs some of Monster Truck proportions.
There are now plans in the UK to make enjoying Motoring unlawful.
Such is progress.
The 28:29 minute video went by way too fast, thank you Nicole, your team and, of course, Jim; an individual saturated in talent, vision and humility!
Thank you!! We're glad you enjoyed watching!!
Thanks so much
With all the cr@p content out there, I can't believe this channel has less than 140k subs. I particularly appreciate the fact that you allow the vehicle creator the room to explain his craftmanship. Allied to your enthusiasm, this is video excellence right here. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 from the UK.
