- i am the worst most nervous "movie" make rhaha, but i promise what i did works! I have 5 reptiles to feed and my sugar gliders loves crickets as treats so i decided to save some $ and breed my own. once the crickets get big enough, i will put them all in a trash can with their food and water so they cant jump out.my green room is dedicated to my breeder crickets and rats. A MUST have in my home.
8 years later and still helpful !!
I know this is an old video but to anyone that's going to breed crickets it might be a good idea to keep the dirt with the eggs out of direct light from the lamp as the heat coming off the lamp can dry it up more easily..
Gino Foogle yes , but do not forget , crickets need a good air circulation and wind breeze
Robert Valerry not sure about a wind breeze, but yeah air circulation is pretty important.
Gino Foogle The meaning of wind breeze that is, crickets need a windy place to faster incubate their eggs.
Robert Valerry So you mean there should be a ventilator of sorts on it...? And if so why is that? Don't understand the importance of that to be honest..
Very helpful! Never did I think I'd have the conversation with my husband of "should we breed crickets or cockroaches?" Right!? But here we are, got our kids some chameleons and yeah live food is a challenge. I'm gonna use your tips, thanks for filming this!
Personally I do both, crickets breed faster and are less valuable, Dubia roaches are more valuable but breed not as fast and have a 7 month life cycle
omg!!! really the mesh is so they dont eat them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i didnt know :( i gotta do it before they eat them!!!!!! thanks for warning me about this ill put mesh on
Thank you for posting this video; it was most insightful compared to the articles i have read for a first-timer cricket breeder. I will be making immediate changes to my cricket farm. fingers crossed for success!
Terrific overview of breeding. Lots of good information. Thanks for sharing. Ax
Great video! Thanks! 1 question, to moisten the water you're simply spritzing with water not actually running water, correct? I'm getting ready to try to do a small cricket farm.
Hey thanks for the video. My son and I have 2 Savannah Monitors, 1 Beardy and 1 gecko and they all have a cricket diet right now. We are spending a fortune on crickets so we wanted to breed them to cut down on cost as these are all rescues that came from bad homes. The Savs eat on average 50-100 per day. The Beardy eats about 20 a day with other fruits and veggies and the gecko since it's just a baby just started on crickets. This was by far the most helpful video I've seen. Your setup is amazing. Thank you again.
Did you ever try cockroaches?
I have a 3yr old son that often lets the crickets loose from our tank using cockroaches essentially means I should toss out all my furniture. One 1 gets loos you're screwed and you're home is ruined.
@@Wishmaster333 Hehe my reaction when I first heard about this, this is late, but he meant dubia roaches or some other feeder roach ;) my 1 colony feeds my 10 dragons.
Thanks helped a lot. I'm starting to breed them before I get my bearded dragon. I can't wait. Just not ready for the noise.
Just getting them from the store, I don't get much, but I like it. If you like nature sounds you won't mind, but even then you learn to filter it out haha
I keep mine in my bedroom (I clean them out and transfer them to a clean box once a week before they get too smelly) and I love the sound of them at night, it's the lovely pleasant sound of nature. If it is raining outside with a slight thunder storm it is pure heaven.
@@gutz323 I don't have any thing no more not even my bearded dragon
@@gutz323 perfect
Thank you SO much. This has been so helpful! I'm trying this for the second time (did everything wrong the first time) so wish me luck! :)
You need male crickets! They do not become fertile till after they reach adulthood and will breed multiple times over the couse of their adult life. You do not need alot of them though a few will get the job done. Good job though you can reduce the light wattage by putting a ceramic pot upsidedown in the container to radiate/contain the heat from a lamp. Crickets love it hang on it when cold stay off when warm. A 75watt bulb will heat to the container to 83℉ with my room temp 70℉ with the pot in there.
Good job! now it's my turn to attempt to breed them :D
Crickets will eat the babies, you can't leave the hatched eggs in with the adults. If you take the container out after the eggs are laid, you don't need the mesh to cover them.
My grandma has this 3x3 meter garden outside the house. The house lot is sealed within 3 meter concrete walls. You guessed it, there are no crickets in the garden. The garden rarely receives watering, except when it rains and has no light at night. The temperature is always warm here in Brazil. So I 'm guessing if I go out and water the plants more often and buy a nice light, crickets from outside the lot might move in, attracted by the light and the moist soil as the wind will blow it's obvious fragrance and the might get curious as to where that good smell of earth is coming from! Then when they see it is illuminated and heated, they'll come singing "Joy to the World"!
Good idea. In Indonesia crickets like in the rice field which was completed in harvest
What is the brand of light bulb is it wilco or something?
I'm wondering since I live in Texas if It would be an efficient source of warmth if I just keep their breeding box outside?
I really like your set up,U got going on there. I think I may do the same. I haven't had any luck It looks like my dirt has been too dry
+Karen Boone when misting laying boxes do u need to mist were water its satured are just damp at top
Using fiber-glass mosquito netting is a terrible idea. Crickets will chew holes right through the sucker and kill all the babies. So PLEASE! It is remarkably important to use METAL mesh NOT FIBER GLASS.
Thx
thanks for the advice, i made some changes
Lol I work at wilco and was thinking I could buy all of that including the flukers then you said you bought that light at wilco kinda made me laugh.
lots of nice info. im about to try breeding them myself for my bearded dragon and 4 baby leopard geckos. hopefully i will be able to pull it off as well
When do you put them back in the adult container? How big do they have to be before you do that? Is there a set number of days? Do you just keep throwing the dirt from the adult cage,every10 days, on top of the of the dirt in the baby cage? I need to know this before I do it or I will have cages everywhere for fear of killing them.
Oof, I was thinking of harvesting the eggs, but I don't know about having THAT many! XD I only have a chameleon and a bearded dragon. The other chameleon that was surrendered to us passed on due to some mouth rot that was never tended to.
I don't see any eggs yet! :( I've had 100 crickets in a tub for almost a week now with moist soil in a container but I'm not sure how to tell if they have laid any eggs. I don't have a mesh over the soil. Are my crickets eating the eggs? It's my first go at this!
+JP Roche lol probably way too late but look for tiny little white dots in the dirt. also once you see the dots move the tub with dirt to its own box. at least from what ive heard this should work.
Without the wire mesh over the soil the are eating the eggs don't worry just add the mesh has to be wire or they will eat through it then when the eggs start to hatch move them into a second tub and just repeat that
Awesome video were did you get the sugar glider I have seen look for them
nice about the mesh idea..have not seen that yet...God bless
I was reading a how to on breeding, they recommend a layer of vermiculite at the bottom of the container. Did you? Please let me know, my kids are trying to breed crickets for their lizards and their cousin as well. Thank you.
What do you mean by "fabric" mesh? Plastic screen material?
Did you dump out the soil into the containers right at first ?
Hey!! This is my 2nd time attempting to breed crickets. The first time was a complete fail. Your video was very useful but you didn't mention what temperature what the babies need??
Thanks it helped alot i went to petco and got 3 dozens but i now the guy and he gave me bout 67 crickets for the price of 3 dozens:-P
How long do you leave the egg laying bin in with the Adults before you remove it and place it in the incubator.??Do you have to use the red Heat Bulb to keep the eggs warm or at a certain temperature.?
do you have to take out the bins or just let the babies hatch and grow in the same container?
Well done.... thanks for the video, i will try it.
How did you move them from the small cricket tank where you dumped the dirt to the bigger area?
This video was SO helpful! So I am wondering - I live in Florida and it is quite hot and humid day and night ... if I keep them on my back patio do I even need a heat lamp??
long as its above 80 over the soil were the eggs are yes just make sure the soil stays moist and you dont need the mesh over the containers.
Thanks this was really helpful keep up the good work
Thanks for sharing the info! I subscribed.
So the dirt where females put their eggs must be fully wet for entirely? Or just for top? Im starting to breed them for food and sale. Future food!
do not fully wet, keep the temperature around 32 degrees
32 degrees!?!?! More like 80
4EverWolf two different things....
So if I don't have soil or dirt in there they can't lay eggs?
Probley atleast they will eat them
Umm.. one question how long do it take for the crickets to breed
do you put drain holes on soil containers? if not how do you prevent molding?
Do you have the mesh on it from the start or do you put it on after they lay eggs?
Love your videos
how do you clean out the adult tubs and baby tubs?
How do you get them to grow big and breed themselves before they die off?
Do you leave the lights on continuously?
what is the tempature for you new hatched crickets?
do you still raise insects and reptiles?
So why do you have to separate the eggs from the adults. Can i not just breed them in one container?? Because if they are flea sized when they hatch they can just climb through the mesh.
The adults will eat them so you have to move them before they climb through
hi can i use a fertitlizer from a gardening center can we talk about also if i can use a 14 watt heating pad in stead of a lamp as im from australia
Fertilizer is a no. The heating pad depends on how large it is a small needs to heat less area, so it gets hotter. However, since you live in australia I would say yes.
Can I use a lava lamp light bulb. Too lazy to buy a heat lamp
I tried the first time but didnt cover the egg laying bin with mesh..i covered the second one a they dug a hole threw it smh....
Use a wire mesh instead
What wattage do you need for the bulbs
I heard they've recently fixed crickets... does this method work in 2019?
Like genetically? Lol If you go to a pet store and get the crickets those crickets are bred so you could do the same thing As the local pet store does and breed your breeded crickets
What kind of dirt you are using here...potting soil?
Rule of thumb with animals is no fertilized soil. Some animals don't mind it, but none needs it. Some it might even kill.
Hi. Once you transfer the containers with eggs to another bin or Rubbermaid, do you have to mist or spray it with water everyday or every two days? or just leave it dry for a week or a week and a half till all the eggs hatch
Yea same as if they where in the adult bin
+Brenden Sullivan
Do you have to keep them heated? Or you just mist them that's it?
+LilMan GotGame Both.
How long do you leave the egg laying bin in with the Adults before you remove it and place it in the incubator? What bulb do you need for the incubator? And do you have to have light on at all times in the incubator and the box with the adult crickets?
I'm not 100% percent sure about all your questions but I do know that you should remove the egg laying bins when the eggs begin to hatch
Leave the eggs in with the adults for about 10 days. Any bulb that gives off enough heat works. The heat is more important that the light, light is just a byproduct of the bulb.
how do you know if they have laid them?
U will see tiny dot in the soil those are eggs
from my experience you do not need males, besides they are loud and I use for feeders before they get that big.
U need a male and female to breed.....
very helpful! thanks so much! i'm definitely going to try this out
do u put the mesh over the dirt from the beginning or once theg lay the eggs
Clinton Sherwyn I know I'm very late but you put the mesh over at the beginning.
great video! I have not had any luck with the eggs hatching. when you say "moist", how moist are you talking? I start out with really damp soil, and mist it a couple times a day. it seems too dry, but if I run it under the sink, I almost get mud. I can't guestimate a happy medium. Help me!!!
Wanda Lunski I'm facing the same pron
problem except im using eco Earth as soil! I've misted the crickets three times and I just tried giving them a light rinse
Nice video, we have same hobb. :)
How many volts/watts did you buy?
how hard is it to sleep at night with all those crickets making noise
Do you need a heating pad?
So did u just keep spraying water on the substrate with the eggs? I did the same setup but i find it dries out quickly with the heat.
Yes. You want to keep it damp at all times so it keeps the eggs moist but doesnt drown them.
Is the mesh necessary? When i put the mesh i never see the females laying eggs but when i don't i see masses of egg laying action!
You dont see it because the eggs go through into the soil (lol 3 years is a bit late I guess to answer
They can lay the eggs through the mesh? Because some are saying to put the mesh even before they start laying eggs. So can they still lay eggs through the mesh ?
Grim Reaper yep females have a long spike that can get past the mesh into the soil
Hi! Do I put the mesh over the soil before the eggs are in there or after?
Im pretty sure it's before because the eggs are really small
I have alot of crickets and breeding them but the males are so loud and i dont want to feed them to my frogs and i want to keep them so what do i do?
XJustice Leaguex if they are available to you, try switching over to banded crickets instead of house crickets. They are much quieter!
Dubia roaches make no noise, and are much less likely to die, better protein, and so much easier to breed. :0)
XJustice Leaguex try to buy silent brown crickets instead, as in, they're silent haha
XJustice Leaguex feed some males but keep some then keep doing that
If you have eggs in the dirt and you put water in it will it disturb the egg?
A mist from a spray bottle would not, but too much water could drown them, so don't put it under a water tap. And keep the spray bottle next to the heat source so the eggs do not get damaged from a sudden temperature change.
Why separate the eggs and hatch-lings from your breeders? do they eat them?
Yes they will eat them she said it
they dont i now have hundreds and i dont seperate them i just put a nice 6inch of substrate in one corner for them to lay the eggs
How long does it take them to grow to about 1/4 in. In size
do you keep the heating lamp on all night too?
Yes
when you give the soil that has eggs in it a rinse, does that drown the crickets? or is it good for them
Yes it will drown them
Is there anyway I can talk to you to pick ur brain on this I have bearded dragons and they eat a lot
i dumped my dirt out bc i didnt think i had anything and when i did, i saw all these TINY, TINY little specks of dirt moving all around. How to i separate the crickets from the dirt or do i keep them in the dirt?
Did you have mesh over them like she said to have or did you just throw them in a container and let them breed?
how do u know if there eggs in the soil tray?
wat if they only sell males to u at the pet store?
A VERY slim chance that you would get all males
Thanks for the info, going to try it out.
Good Job !!
you said that some of my eggs died but then you said it was my first try so ?
do you have to have all these separate cages? could u just use one cage?
no neither do you have to seperate the hatch-lings from the adults
Do you really have to have everything she says to breed them?
What if you just leave the egs w the adult cricketa
can you post what guide you used?
hey so just wondering what to do my crickets are eating each other even though there is a lot of food, what can i do to prevent finding dead ones. also they have been dieing off i was wondering if its after they lay eggs because this is what it seems like. Please help, Thanks.
give them lots of surface area by using egg crates.
store bought crickets from pet store gave me what they had, rendered mostly males. Their dying! help!
What do you mean dumb it everywhere?? With the adults??
It was a separate tank, not the one with the adults. I'm pretty sure she meant just spread the soil over the bottom of the batching tank. (Since you don't know where the eggs are and you don't want to accidentally bury any of them under too much soil so they can't dig out.)
what dirt do you use
Very helpful thanks keep it up. 😊😊😊
Thank you so much this helped alot.
How in the world do you catch them after you breed them???
Put toilet paper rolls in the container, grab the roll shake it into a small container until you have enough and then pour the container into your pets cage. Done!
Where did you get the tubs?
Are there any Goodwill stores around you they usually throw them away at least a couple times a week.
All i have is a market for food near me for the next like 100 miles XD ill just try to find one on amazon maybe.
Newgamer65 AJ Do they ever have the Styrofoam insulated containers if so you could get one of them and cut a little square out of the top and glue a clear piece of plastic in it's place.
oh. yeah i do. thanks!
You're welcome!
Thank You
whats the watts on adult bin and baby also eggs with soil, please let me kno as soon as possible
I personally use a 50 watt bulb and it works for my mealworms and crickets
what's a fooker??
would the baby crickets not climb through the gaps at the top of the tank
Crickets cant climb very well. If you put clear tape around the top ledges they 100% wont be able to climb out. They can only climb the corners, and not the roof of the bin.
Do I need large crickets or can I use small crickets to breed?
Whatever you want
charlotte ariel probably large because they are most likely adults.
Usally smaller crickets aren't adults I would use the large ones
