Thanks for watching How I Keep Crickets Alive & Cut Cost in our Feeder Insect Series and be sure to check out the Feeder Insect Playlist to see other great projects. This was just an example of how I kept my crickets and why I no longer have problems keeping them healthy, so you can choose to use my method as a guide but I always recommend doing research so you can customize a solution that works best for you.
I will also like to add doing weekly keeper cleaning and changing their food multiple times a week for the best results. It's always best to raise your own crickets to ensure they are being kept and fed well so they are a healthy food or treat for your pet. If ever in doubt when buying crickets trust your instincts and also consider getting back up for your reptiles, for example, Reptaid in the event your pet gets sick. It's great for their immune system and helps with parasites etc.

As a breeder of insects its good to dial back and see from other perspectives and you did a fantastic job with this video. You have a little humor as well as valuable info. I'll be trying the dimmer with timer since I breed in mass quantities, I can see that saving me a lot of $$. It's refreshing to see you feed them only the best which is so important.
Thanks so much, that improach greatly improved the survival rate, if interested I put links in the description area😊
Thank you for the reply. Will Def check out your Amazon page. Also any suggestions on how to deal it being too hot 😁 it's getting pretty hot here quickly. Will they survive in the garage when it's 100+ outside?
Oddly enough I'm not bothered by crickets, they remind me of cute grasshoppers. Great information thanks for sharing
Now seeing this thanks so much🙃

If anything crickets are the ugly version of grasshoppers

Loved this video! The last two times I've gotten crickets they've died so quickly I'll loose like 7 a day so I'm going to try some of these modifications for sure! Two questions, how often do you remove the fruit and veggies because when I tried having fresh fruit it would start to mold very quickly. Question 2, could you please do a video of how you clean the crickets, how you remove all of them to clean out the poop and how often you do a full removal and cleaning please!!
Thanks for stopping by. I tend to swap out food every 2-3 days but it depends on how many crickets are being kept. I usually add enough so they can consume most of it before it gets any mold. As for cleaning their bins I plan on doing a video sometime. In this video at 2:47 you'll notice I'm using the scraper and I also use 2 bins which is similar to when I'm adding them as seen later in the video. Just be sure to wash and dry thoroughly then add the new eggs crates etc😊
I watched your surgery video and now this and I can't help but feel like RUclips doesn't deserve this guy. You are awesome bro!
Wow Thank You😀
I'm impressed with this video, it was hilarious and had so much great information. I love the animations and you have so many unique pets that I almost forgot about your mudskipper.
Ahh thank you 🙂 I had Spock for 2 years now and I'm way past due for his videos.
When I was a kid I stepped on a cricket nest and I've been afraid ever since but you did a terrific job handling and caring for them. This was informative and hilarious so thanks for putting me at ease

A stainless steel dough cutter/ bench scraper is a super upgrade often for less money than the paint scraper! It doesn't rust and it lasts even better with a wider surface!
You brought it on this video man and the music complimented it perfectly. My cousin said he looked out but did not see you at the reptile show

Those dancing bugs at the end were hilarious lol. I love your animals and great video

Great video!!! I got egg crates at an expo, 10- $1.00. You can get aquarium’s at Petco for $1.00 a gallon for they have their sale, usually 3-4 times a year, and save money there. You can get mesh lids at Walmart for less than $10 bucks.

Ha ha ha!
Is it ok that instead of egg crates can I use rocks to make hiding spots for them?
they can hide in and around many things, even burrowing if you have them soil to live in. but the eggcrates are just one more option for something that you can generally acquire cheaply and in large amounts of at least, quick to find and buy.
Outstanding video. How many critters do you think a person needs to feed in order for keeping crickets to be worth the time and cost?
I just started with crickets. Having issues with cannibalization, but I did figure out how to mitigate the smell. I lay down a tiny bit of activated charcoal and then a thin layer of vermiculite as a substrate. When its time to clean I dump the bins into a container (the vermiculite and cricket refuse is valuable for my terrarium substrates) and then wipe the empty bin down with alcohol.
I'm going to try putting together food more like what you're showing. I was giving them a powdered bug feed and hydrated water crystals but I'm still experiencing fairly high rates of cannibalism, so I don't think its cutting the mustard.
Great job! I'm sure it work out well
it's a good idea on re-using the vermiculite and charcoal but how often do you need to add or change your terrarium substrate?
for the cannibalism, it's also possible there aren't enough hiding spaces, or you have too many in the enclosure.
Thx so I can take care of my crickets that I have a pets
Ty for the animal feeding warning! Im keeping a cricket as a pet so I'm glad i didnt have to watch one get eaten lmao
I hear you and appreciate you stopping by
Hey brother, really enjoyed the quality of your video and your willingness to share information with others. I wanted to share something with you as well. You expressed your dislike for the odor from the crickets, there is a medium that can be obtained very inexpensively called vermiculite, it makes an excellent substrate all on its own for the base of the terrarium and will absorb most if not all of the odor from the cricket excrement. I hope you will benefit from this information or have possibly already become aware of it prior to this comment. God bless you as well brother, may the peace of our savior be upon you. ✌🕊💚
Thanks very much for sharing🙂

Nice video - Thanks :) Do they need day and nite time / light?? Greetings from me in Norway :)
Greetings! Not at all, the adjustable heat bulb/light is to control the heat temperature so they can have average temps between 75 to 78° F 🙂
Omg i really dont like handling crickets. But i gotta suck it up and deal with it because i really want an african fat tail gecko 😆thanks for this helpful video!
Do you need the heat source lamp at night as well? Cuz at night in SoCal it drops to the low 60’s
I try to keep the temps upper 70's at all times

How many crickets do did you get here to start a colony? And what wattage bulb do I need for a 20 gal tank? I live in South Florida. Planning on keeping them in the garage. Our night go down to 60s at the moment. Thank you. Great video btw. 😊
I think they should be fine in Florida. In the video I showed the hold that can control the level of heat.. .You can check out my Amazon store if interested in the products I used. Thanks for stopping by and sorry for the late response
Would I need a light for my cricket farm? I live in Southern California….. can I just keep the crickets outside in my backyard without a heat lamp?
Hi again! Quick question I forgot to ask, does it matter what wattage for the bulb you choose? What type of bulb do you use?
Sorry I'm now seeing this. You'll notice at time 3:16 I'm speaking about a specific light fixture with a dimmer switch that allows you to adjust the heat so you can use whichever heat bulb. I personally use a 75watt bulb and measure the heat to 85 degrees in the cricket pen with the heat gun. I have some links in my description area.
Is that LED bulb?
@@bustout321 LED doesnt generate much heat. The priority isn't light, it's heat. It's most likely either incandescent ("regular") or a halogen, which tend to get a bit hotter.
@@_JS96 what about using a reptile bulb for them will that work also??
@@gates1980 As long as it provides heat, it should. However, in my personal experience, I’ve found that anything labeled “for reptile use” is much more expensive. For instance, a halogen bulb is less than $5 at my local hardware store but the same bulb (same wattage, same amount of heat) is sold at my local pet shop for over $20.
I have a pet cricket named Jiminy Cricket. I Actually use a low-heat heating pad and he is spending all night just sitting on it. He really likes bananas and he's been doing really well. I really want to warm up to him enough to handle him. I have three enclosures I could've put him in, but I wanted to stay in the biggest enclosure. So only one cricket is in a 10 gallon tank-like mesh that keeps humidity and heat.
🙂
Casually realizes that Jiminy is a girl.

We are working on our cricket setup. If the temp where we plan on keeping them is warm do they still need the heat lamp?
Sorry now seeing this, not necessarily just monitor to keep 80's which I've seen worked best.
@Kripke The Chameleon & Friends how big is Glass Aquarium? its 40x25x25cm? or?
Its a standard 10 gallon aquarium USA Specs - 20.25 x 10.5 x 12.63 inches.

Where do you put the feeder crickets when you do a cage cleaning? I really want a leopard gecko but the crickets are one of my biggest blocks I was thinking of putting a cage for them in my garage if i get a heat lamp but i dint think my mom would want any crickets at all in her house so im not really sure what to do
I simply shake the egg trays with crickets into a clean container similar to like what I used in this video, I then clean the enclosure/aquarium and add new trays, food etc.
You don't have to use crickets, I just like variety for my reptiles. You can raise meal and superworms or even silkworms which is cleaner. There is also an option for dubia roaches since they can't fly or climb on plastic containers and they don't smell like crickets. I did a 4 part series on different insects so check out my feeder insect video playlist and see which is best for you.
i have a question. i have a toad that eats extra small crickets. if i keep feeders crickets in a tank, how do i catch the crickets when its time to feed my toad? do i use a net or do i have to try to reach in and catch each cricket by hand? i want to keep my own feeder cricket set up cause diving to the pet store every week is getting tiresome, but i can't figure the feeding part out. Right now i buy them in a small container and i pick up the whole container and shake a few into a sandwich bad and then dust them with calcium powder.
Thanks for reaching out. I use a prong/tong as explained at 4.30 in the vid, I also included links in the description area if interested😉

you can also keep an object in the cricket home. when you need to feed your toad, take that object, shake it into a container (eg, whether it's 5 or 50 that fall into the container). take that container to your toad, shake in a few crickets to the toad's feeding enclosure, and then take the rest of the crickets back to their normal home area.
I really enjoyed this and seeing your pets in action, but unfortunately I can't stand crickets either
They are smelly little rascals but I do feel bad for them though, that's why give them the best possible life till then
Mad 4Fishh I recommend keeping them in somewhere like a garage or shed where they cannot bother you
Do you have a link to the model of light that is?
Sorry for the late response. My Amazon store feature most products I use in my videos
Trying to keep them alive is difficult, i bought over 60 from pet store and over 6 died in one night. I only need to keep em alive for about 2-3 weeks to feed my frogs, i feed em carrots. Do i need a big enclosure for 60 medium sized crickets? i keep them in a 1 gallon plastic tub, is that enough?? do crickets fight and kill each other??
Sorry for the late response. I would recommend more room, just get a bigger cheap plastic tub and ventilate the lid and keep temps in the high 70's
Do you have a video on raising Dubia roaches? I thought you did but I can’t find it. What do you suggest for keepin the enclosure moist for dubias. Thanks in advance
Thanks for stopping by. I do have a dubia roach video but it was unlisted in error. I just reopened it so be sure to check it out and let me know.

How long do those crickets last?
So what kind of heat light do I get. If I buy 50 from the pet store and sit them in my house half of them die the next morning what temperature do the crickets need
Sorry I did not get an alert and now seeing this. I usually keep between 72 to 76 degrees if my house temp drops. I have a 75 watt heat bulb and simply adjust the heat as needed with the adjust switch as mentioned
Do you have problems with your crickets eating each other. Idk if mine actually are bc I haven’t caught it but I literally have to go to the pet store every other day and it’s getting more expensive then I was told and thought. Thanks hopefully doing some of this stuff will help
I haven't personally experienced it, but I've heard it before. Just keep them well fed and remove old food in a timely manner if any,, and give them sufficient room and warmth if room temps are below 72 degrees. I wish you well🙂
if you only keep on hand, a few crickets that you have to go buy more every other day, and you're not feeding those crickets to something else , then chances are they are eating each other. just keep more food or hiding places in your enclosure.
Now, to say they are eating each other, it may not mean they are attacking each other while alive. It's possible the crickets are dying, and then their corpse gets eaten.
So just check your environment and make sure you're able to keep the crickets alive until feeding time as well.
wow these crickets get taken care of better then some kids jesus christ.
Critterdepot will sell you double the crickets for the same cost.
👍
will they sell 1/2 the crickets for 1/4 of the price? in case we don't need 1000 crickets.
@@pershop4950 I believe 200-250 crickets is their minimum amount. You can buy only 250 crickets but its still going to cost the same as 500 crickets. 20$
I bought a heatmat and thermostat for breeding my crickets will they eat the thermostat probe?
Sorry mow seeing this and I wish you well on your breeding project. As for the temp prob, cricket will nibble on just about anything including foil. If the probe is metal you should be okay but as for the cord connected anything is possible😑

Sorry for her late response, I would yes to keep warm in the winter season. Whatever it takes to keep them around 75 to 78 ° F
Am I the only person struggling to feed live food like crickets? 😅 recently I have had to buy some for my fish and then discovered my tetras love them as I saw them ripping one apart. I was shocked. Can’t understand how some people watch live feeding for “entertainment” 😅 I hate it. But I am here now to offer them a good life before they are food🥲

How many crickets do you recommend for a 10 gallon tank?
From my experience with the right conditions I found it best to stay at 250 max
How long do the crickets usually last in this enclosure?
Depends on how much you buy, feed to your pets, etc. I sometimes have them over 2 months until fed off

How many crickets can you put in that tank?
I usually buy 250
I used a 15 gallon tank and a lot of them still died. I saw on google that it's cuz of ammonia buildup but I left them in the open and for whatever reason it's still the same.
Clean often and regulate average 78° F, make sure they have clean egg crstes etc
Does the crickets have their heat lamp on 247?
How would using egg cartons out of the fridge contaminate your pets..?
I've heard you have to remove dead crickets ASAP otherwise you can get parasites that will be passed on to your reptiles. This doesn't make sense to me as if they don't have parasites, not sure how they suddenly do when they die. Anyone have any info on this?
At the end of the day the body is decomposing and they'll likely feed on it, so it's best to remove and try to buy from reputable vendors with crickets in good health to lower the risk of pinworms etc
