    Here's a better way to get your Spider proper nutrition, rather than wasting time gut-loading a cricket: Use Dubia Roaches, rather than Crickets.
    Crickets:
    - Cannibalistic (Part of why they die like crazy),
    - When they die, they emit a fume toxic to the living crickets (another reason they die),
    - Will bite a molting Tarantula (so you have to hunt them down, and remove the survivors),
    - Stink like hell (Even alive),
    - Waste of Money,
    - They make annoying sounds (and a lot of it),
    - More effort is required if you plan to breed them,
    - They jump out of containers (unless using a cricket keeper, which I don't suggest),
    - Less nutrition (as Bob mentioned in the video).
    Roaches:
    - More Protein,
    - Can reproduce like crazy if kept in the right conditions (Very Economic),
    - They do not stink at all,
    - No noise whatsoever,
    - When they die, they won't kill off the rest of your food source,
    - Will not bother a Tarantula going through a molt,
    - They won't fly out of your container when you open it to grab one for your Spider,
    - Easier to chase down and catch them.

      Not good advise for Canadians. In Canada it is illegal to sell or trade roaches, meaning it is next to impossible for your average hobbyists to acquire.

      The government has deemed roaches to be an invasive species and have made it illegal to sell or trade them. The same is true for millipedes. It is very difficult to get these kind of insect in Canada.

      Chaoitcme Hmmm I see.
      Probably for the best, really. Roaches can spread nasty things pretty easy, and can even breed ridiculously fast with or without a mate. If just one got loose and lived ...O_O

      Superworms/mealworms would even be a better alternative to the crickets. I would honestly say crickets are the worst option. There's really nothing good about them other than the fact that eating one wont kill your spider....

    I use carrots, lettuce, oranges, even some bread or meat to feed my crickets. The crickets are healthy and my leopard gecko is healthy. I have not and never will buy something special to feed crickets when I can simply feed them healthy scraps.

      If mice were bad for tarantulas, then why would some species such as the bird eater and lots of baboon tarantulas hunt for them in the wild along with birds, other insects, and even some reptiles that are FAR worse than a captive bred mouse. Yes they are not good for SOME tarantulas, but definitely not all. After all they are carnivorous for gods sake.

    Wild-caught insects may harbor parasites (internal and/or external) and probably should be avoided. Many hobbyists cultivate certain types of cockroaches (B. dubia, etc.) as a meatier prey item. I would avoid cricket supplements with added calcium, as tarantulas only need trace amounts of that mineral. (Some believe that large amounts of Ca can actually create problems during the molting process, so why risk it?)

    • @jerumd
      @jerumd 10 лет назад +1

      You're right that "some people believe that calcium can create molting problems during a molt" and the safety hazards of catching wild caught insects that could harbor dangerous parasites but, there are no evidence pointing to the fact that tarantulas can suffer from molting problems after eating too much calcium because, tarantulas exoskeleton is composed of several layers - The cuticle, endocuticle, and epicuticle. It is composed of a combination of chitin, a substance similar to that of plant cellulose, bound with protein to form a complex glycoprotein. There are no traces of calcium within these layers. And besides, tarantulas always prey upon vertebrates in the wild all the time like mice, lizards, birds, and small snakes and never suffer from molting problems whatsoever. The only reason why tarantulas suffer from molting problems are ignorant people who never purchase a humidifier for their Tarantulas, never refill their tarantula's water dish, and cranking up the heater a little too much drying up their tarantulas. Tarantulas need lots of water to drink and lots of humidity before a molt.

    • @Arachnoscribe
      @Arachnoscribe 10 лет назад

      Jerum Distura I'm not aware of (but would be interested in) any comprehensive field studies regarding the effects of vertebrate consumption within groups of Theraphosids, captive or otherwise. Also, and for similar gaps of information, it seems a bit presumptive to conclude that ALL tarantulas would require increased humidity levels before or during the molting process. My own observations and experiments, though ongoing and with only 50 species, "suggest" that tarantulas are very adaptable in response to environmental variations. I appreciate the comment, fellow enthusiast... Cheers! 8)

    If you feed your ts every week/month a mice (pinkie etc) your tarantula will get a Calcium overdose....
    When shedding comes they'll get stuck because their new exso-Skelton will be to hard to get out of the other one.....
    you can feed them mice (pink etc) but not as a weekly /monthly food source
    once every now and them is fine but not weekly/monthly... only as a treat

      Long as you know no one's been crop dusting, most bugs should be clean, but even then, you run the risk of parasites. A lot of wild caught insects may have parasites that can harm your tarantula, so I would just recommend stor bought.

      I'm going to take a guess and say yes. I don't think the Tarantula's likes to eat that stuff, they like live prey, and specific types of prey. Not a bowl of jelly, or strawberries, etc.

    • @matthewlittle8286
      @matthewlittle8286 8 лет назад

      You don't need to gutload crickets. That's mostly a thing for reptile owners. T's are fine to eat crickets without gut loading.

      Matthew Little depends if you want to give the T extra nutrients, you don't have to but this video is only telling you it's good to do it if you want a big healthy T

    • @rachelmarieLMT
      @rachelmarieLMT 6 лет назад

      Ryan Freebody I imagine it might be a good idea to add extra nutrients, fluids etc to the tarantula diet when you're expecting they are going into pre-molt or before winter (if you mimic seasonal changes in the enclosure for "hibernation" etc) to keep them healthy during prolonged stretches of not eating. Idk if its necessary or not...just a guess

  • @NWguy83
    @NWguy83 10 лет назад

    You should only gut-load crickets that you plan to feed to reptiles. If you plan on feeding them to an arachnid such as a tarantula, then you should feed the crickets things like plain oatmeal and bran cereal. Arachnids do NOT need that much calcium, and in fact too much calcium and be very bad for them.

    • @ryanfreebody6881
      @ryanfreebody6881 7 лет назад +2

      GreenB NM no you feed the cricket first and once it has eaten proceed to feed the tarantula with the cricket, it's a nice way of giving the cricket it's final meal before ultimately dying.

    • @ryanfreebody6881
      @ryanfreebody6881 7 лет назад +1

      I usually use a small container that I get from my Chinese take away funnily enough in the UK that is and store them in there, you can pick them up pretty cheap online, I usually separate the one I need and put it into another separate little container and let it feed, you don't have to do this you can just chuck crickets in for the T to hunt later if you wish, this is only if you want to give them more nutrients.

    • @greenbnm3885
      @greenbnm3885 7 лет назад

      Ryan Freebody I see thanks! because I don't really have a place to keep the crickets Lol

    • @ryanfreebody6881
      @ryanfreebody6881 7 лет назад

      I see man, no worries the cricket is just food for the T so putting it in a separate container to feed it doesn't matter much but the way I see it as long as the T is eating fine and is big and healthy there is no need to worry, it's just what ever you think is best for your T you could even do it now and then as like a treat totally up to you.

      I have had a RHT for ten years (a female). She is huge now! They eat rarely, or little in my experience. Give your T a couple weeks, then put in 5 to 10 regular store bought crickets and leave them in there for several days. They like to hunt/eat at night. That's what I've done and it works well. This variety of T seems to be able to go long periods without eating, so don't worry too much. Just don't annoy or disturb your T too much either. They like a quiet life, in lower light, and not too damp in their habitat.

    • @monksters1
      @monksters1 9 лет назад

      Crickets and Roaches once every week or two,should be a T's main diet. Mealworms and Superworms should be used as treats since they are high in fat and mostly just empty calories. I've only been in the hobby for about 7 moths now but I hear mice are really bad for them. Since they are apparently high in calcium. Too much calcium will cause molting problems. So I'm personally not going to do that...since I also feel bad for them lol Also if you're getting a B.Smithi then,unless it's a sling,it doesn't need any misting or spraying whatsoever. Once their at about the 2-3 inch mark,desert species like that one absolutely hate moisture. An overflown water bowl will provide all the humidity it needs. Month old comment,I know,but hopefully I helped :)

    • @monksters1
      @monksters1 8 лет назад

      87lycanthropy No, from my experience they just drink the water that overflows into the substrate. Unless you mean that they might drown in their water bowl. If so then just make sure the bowl is smaller than their leg span. And unless you have an H. Gigas, make sure it's not too deep either. Though I definitely wouldn't give a sling a water bowl. Since them drowning in one is definitely a real possibility.

    Who gut loads the crickets in nature?

    • @Vailwolf
      @Vailwolf 10 лет назад

      No one. The crickets feed itself all it needs in nature. In captivity the cricket can't feed itself.

    • @kimberlyduran3028
      @kimberlyduran3028 10 лет назад

      What if we took the food plants that you find in nature and gave them to the crickets?

    • @Vailwolf
      @Vailwolf 10 лет назад

      Could probably do that so long as theres no pesticide and what not on it. But the point of having a pet is to try and make it live longer than it would in nature. And maybe animals do under the right care.

    • @wampaAWESOMEsauce
      @wampaAWESOMEsauce 10 лет назад +1

      No one does. The point of gut loading is to add everything a wild cricket does not have in the wild. So it becomes a better prey item for pets.

      FluffyTurbo don't feed tarantulas mice. It's unnecessary and the mouse can very badly bite the tarantula. Feed the tarantula large Dubia roaches

    The best idea is to simply feed the crickets a varied, healthy diet all of the time. Then they will always have nutrition in them to feed to the T.

      Noro _ As soon as I got my first tarantula I knew that I will be an old tarantula lady, instead of a cat lady.
      I'll have dozens of them all around my house just sitting around and twice a week I'll walk in with a bag of crickets and dump it on the floor and all the T's will come running out of the woodwork in and eat all the crickets.
      At night they'll all crawl on top of me and they'll be my blanket and sleep on me for warmth.
      All of them will have names and personalities. Sometimes they'll breed without me knowing and I'll get baby T surprises.
      >O>! this is my destiny.
