Check out the full, extended interview with Patti Smith.
More than any rock star, Patti embodies that dynamic - maybe you've felt it yourself... the need to break away and rediscover yourself. Growing up in South Jersey, Patti toiled in a factory job, read poetry, and plotted her escape. In New York, she became a poet herself... and when that poetry was put to music - minds were blown. Once she'd given rock & roll the shot of adrenaline it needed, Patti retired to the suburbs to raise a family with her husband, the late Fred 'Sonic' Smith from the mighty MC5. Now back in New York - and touring the world with her most recent album 'Banga' - Patti is far from retiring: her many projects include a mystery novel, a film, a screenplay, plus another book - the follow-up to 'Just Kids'. Plus there's 'Patti Smith: Camera Solo' - an exhibit of her own photography and installation work, a rare glimpse into Patti's personal world - on display in Canada for the first time at the Art Gallery of Ontario, February 9-May 19, 2013.

Patti Smith is one of the true artists left in the world. Some of the comments below are so ignorant and irrelevant to the subject.
She is gorgeous... The truly ugly people make ugly comments here.
I have learned from Patti to not be self-conscious and not to let ANYONE intimidate me. Do not roll over in bed with mortification or embarassment. She tells us to be brave and to trust our instincts. She truly is divine and she makes our lives more meaningful. She is life-affirming.
Beautifully said
She's a ray of light full of brilliance .... wow!!!!!!!!
What’s remarkable about her for a punk rocker who’s produced such profound literary works is how she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She radiates the joy & humor of an 80s hair band & the humble self-possession of authenticity, and the perfect imperfection of a saint. Can’t think of another figure that packs so many contradictory virtues in such a little package. A national treasure, she is.
And I imagine she's a kind person.
she's an inspiration
why do people judge on looks, a beautiful lady with a beautiful heart and soul
She has always looked like that. She was the first American woman I ever saw to not shave her armpits and show it on an album cover but that is just who she is. Right brain people aren't as superficial and worried about appearances. I used to worry a lot more about things like that than I do now. As we get older and lose everyone we love as she has lost many people, it causes a person to become more real.
Buzzmoogy Siouxsie Sioux did it too. Both legends
She was 66 when this was filmed, still strong and gonna keep touring at 73, setting a great example for the rest of us. 🔥💚🔥💜🔥

Patti is a true hero . She is tolerant , constantly learning and a real example to us all .
She is so cool it hurts
9:10 is so cute
rachelbrien 21:00 ILY
Absolutely love her. She speaks with clarity and with passion; a true artist and a rock ICON!
When you can make Patti Smith giggle like a school girl.. you rock
Thank you for being different Miss Smith.
❤
I feel bad for anyone who isn't inspired by her. Her life's trajectory is testimony to her innate work ethic. Creating, and seeking information and what she draws from it and applies it is fascinating to me. She's a great teacher. Xoxo Patti
I love her personality, outlook on life and devotion to her family, musical performances, spoken word performances and her photographs. I can see why she was and is so well-liked by those "famous people" who hung out with her.
+Toni Francis Agree 100% A true artist in every sense of the word and a wonderful, intelligent, fascinating, person. If ever I had the chance to hang out with any famous person for a day, I would choose Patti.
lalala6751 I’ve always said the same. I’d love to hang out w/ Patti Smith.
I love Patti Smith. She's not only a great singer and songwriter, but she's also an artist.
+Jason Carpp she was great but i truly believe we have the new patti and her name is florence welch . people will slag me off for saying this (maybe you too) but i like to think i know my music and fuck it yeah there you go
+youandwhosearmy? I agree. I've never heard of Florence Welch.
+Jason Carpp she's good, very good
I think at her core and heart of hearts she's not a singer but an artist, and not just an artist but an overall creator. I a.m. like that so I can relate.
Jason Carpp
she's an artist, peopel forget that artists (just via the nature of art) are risky (if they're GOOD artists) and challenge themselves and society a bit with their work.
Passionate, creative, funny and true to herself. Awesome woman.
Patti is amazing, brilliant, and beautiful in every way.
Indeed dear man!
What an incredible woman she is. I’ve missed a lot of her music and art and recently came across “Frederick” again and jumped in with both feet. She’s a beautiful, beautiful woman inside and out with an insight and intelligence that is rare. She knocks me out with her lyrics, I’m thrilled I rediscovered this diamond. Thank you Patti.
She’s a sweetheart. Thoughtful and honest. Totally generous with her own history. Lovely woman.
"Believe me, it's a tribute to you that I don't want to take over your gig." such beautiful candid spunk, along with humility and grace. one of my idols.
Amber Tucker Me, too. I just love Patti.
She is an amazing human being. I love her!
#pattismith is a true artist and has lived her life as such. She speaks with clarity and from her core. Authentic would be a great description of Patti. This was a fantastic interview!
Good evening dear Patti! Have a nice day:))
SO well said. Great comment!
Yeah but how is she in the RnR H.O.F. (along with ABBA and Run-DMC) and a true RnRoller like Ted Nugent isn't?? (NRA?)
Man, She is cool as shit.
she is a gem...I hope all can appreciate her while we have her...
She's the sun shining through the window...
A beautiful description...
1 of the most genuine people of "MY GENERATION " - she's the high punk priestess poet - a true iconoclast & autodidact ; a unique soul.
I was thankfully fortunate to see her & her band (in later yrs.) at a small DTLA
venue circa '08-'09. Blew us away with pure rock energy & her writing, music; what an incredible performance. No nostalgic, 'remember us' act - fresh, energetic, new; she could've been in her 20s-30s still w/ the hunger & fire of something to prove ; like The Who or Neil Young
No oldies novelty act at all! I'm so grateful I got to see her live - she had a fantastic poetry reading segment too !! I really didn't get fully hip to her till I was a little older - knew who she was in the '70s, but didn't immerse til
the later '80s & '90s ; I was kinda like that with Dylan & Leonard Cohen too....saw em all Live at least once or more !!
I love Patti Smith! Very talented lady!
I simply adore this women. I read her book, have her albums. I love her kindness and compassion and intelligence. She is the real deal
I just love her, she's so inspiring. Bet she's really nice in person, too.
2 things:
1. Patti Smith is amazing. I would have loved to just sit and have a conversation with her at any point in her life
2. Strombo made me feel like I just vicariously managed #1. Thank you.
if you're criticizing someone like patti smith's looks, that tells a lot about you
I thank God, for Patti Smith!
A true artist, a generous soul, a great human being, and I cannot believe that some people below are focusing on her hair or her teeth. Grow. Up. Watch her in performance and then come back and kneel.
teva Yes!! Thank you, teva.
Her intelligence is so real and useful and about helping the good to rise up in the world-she believes in people I thank the universe for her having a voice that gets heard by so many because her message is love
wow a really intelligent well informed interviewer who asks fascinating questions-interesting what Patti had to say about younger generations-i certainly don't think mine found a unifying principle-this one unifies around fiddling with mobile phones-I think you could say we are never unified-unification can only be via payment of £-
but a frigging unique and culturally significant rock band might be the best thing-one that shoots an energy up your spine
Patti , I found you in 1978 , then lost you until the 1990's and now I found you again just when I needed you most
She's so beautiful in every possible way
A sincere, insightful artist. So rare.
She is Unique. We cherish her with so much tenderness.
I love her. I have pictures I took of her in a concert in Philly @1978. So precious.
Great interview as always with you Mr.Strombo. Thank you very much. And thank you Miss Smith for being so generous.
This woman ironically is quite conventional, isn't she. Jersey girl, like me!
I love her!
Love her so very much.
Also, a great interview.
One of the most influential musicians of modern times, the Mother of punk music and a first-class live act!
Just saw her last week. This woman is simply beautiful.
Patti Smith has always been my kind of woman. She is true to herself. She is a strong person that and I admire her for being so truthful about people, war and our planet.
I love Patti Smith! She says what she means and I admire her not only for all her talents but for the way she is. She is herself, with her own look. I am not girlie myself but I am down to earth like her. I always want to do a good job.
And one fugly beyatch!!! Dam. Brush those sweater's.
she's great, I agree!
Wonderful Woman. Integrity to the core!
A very impressive and thoughtful lady.
Going to see her at the Byron Bay Bluesfest (Australia). Looking forward to the show.
I just love her. Please read JUST KIDS. A wonderful book. I never wanted it to end.
Superior to 'M Train', BTW.
Ditto!
very clever and talented woman/artist.
This is one of the best interviews i've seen. He's kind and truly interested on what she has to say. He could have asked about how she feels about creating and being an artist today. They talked a little about yes, i just wish people could be a little more interested in the person she is today as well, not just the huge 70's icon. Anyway, Patti is an angel. Such a loving person and he did a great job.
very nice lady indeed
Great interview, I love how deferential and respectful he is, even with the cheeky comment: "I tell my friends that Patti Smith is my girlfriend".
There are few contemporary artists - male or female - that are as articulate and intelligent as Patti Smith. She does tend sometimes to go on and on but she is a real gem. Her writing and music are for people who like to think about art and what is means. Great interview.
She is a very great person and SHE really has a creative brain!!
What makes you say that?
Bebinaify- the problem here is that this is not "she"- clearly this is "he". And you should not be deceived.
Patti is an amazing person. Love the opportunity to hear her share her life. Thank you
this makes me so happy. I love Patti. She is so real, so authentic, intelligent, brilliant and warm. I adore and respect her so much. Love this interview... Thank you dear Patti, long may you live and continue to share your brilliance.
She's just a real delight.. bless you Patti Smith
Indeed! what a spectacular interview!
"Present generations have not found their core unifying principle that they are all together on"
Love ,,,I am always with you ,,,,,
She actually met Jimi Hendrix.
And Janis Joplin
I am in such awww of this women...Watching this video I wish i could sit and chat with her #PattiSmith
I wil always remember that seeing PS at the Roundhouse CamdenLondon 76 .The Stranglers we’re top of bill but PS and her band were amazing that night the Stranglers were poor that night.
Patti Smith a true gem.
Awesome woman!
I know I’m late to the game on this, but I only have two album covers on the back wall of my bar, one is “Easter” the other is “horses” two of the best albums ever made.
How people appear in the media and how they actually are in real life are often competely opposite from each other. Patti knows how to work the room. She always has.
"I always pulled from Johnny (Carson)...Not to be intimidated, not to fall apart or ya' know feel like a lesser being...they think they're so cool. Step back & lay something on them & be cooler..." Ms Smith was & still is such a pioneer.
Thanks for sharing!
Her giggle is super cute. 😊
Hard to believe ppl didnt get "Jesus died for somrones sins, but not mine" I mean, its pretty obvious.
Patti doesn't need to be defended against ignorance. She stands on her own two feet quite well.
One of the coolest chicks in rock.
I went to High School with Patti. In study hall she used to draw cartoons really well. One was a dog taking a dump on the sidewalk. I didn’t know she could sing?
Great interview! Patti is a true artist in every sense of the word and a beautiful person. The world is a better place because of her. She is an imense talent!
patti smith is so fucking cool omgasdgjkl;
I saw you today, in Helsinki. And as I was walking home I found myself talking to you, telling you how I feel you "with me" - a strong presence when I listen to your music whilst painting my paintings. I just love you.
To be a fly on her wall❤
She is beautiful to even listen too in an interview.
Such a respectful interview of an amazing woman, artist, writer, poet. Thanks George.
Patti Smith has always been badass!! Which other rock star has cussed out God in a song?
Theres been a few death metal bands but Patti did it with feeling and style. I think REM losing my religion could be dissing god
"Come on God make a move" was sung/said with more passion than REM or any other death metal band. Ever
@David Tokio Losing My Religion has nothing to do with religion. It's a Southern euphemism like "I'm losing my mind".
If you listen to it it's about someone trying to keep a grasp on a relationship that's slipping. Jesus CHRIST, Stipe has explained this a thousand times over the decades.
She was Stipe's greatest influence 😊
Loved the interview. He has such genuine admiration for her, and she was so relaxed. What an inspiration Patti is.
so real. beautiful.
Great interview. Well done, George!
He has to ask what inspired her to take Polaroids? He didnt do his homework? Ive been a Patti fan since 76,. I love that after her "success" at the 1st poetry project, she looked to Crazy Horses philosophy, not to take the spoils in battle. In other words, it came to easy, and she felt she hadnt struggled hard enough. Thank God she waited.
Jeeeez i had polaroids n never MOUTH ABOUT IT.
@@michaelheery7427 *"i hAd a FRIEND (named Michael) who didn´t die of aids, but he took polarAids (of people) anyways"*
It's her hair not yours.
+Lyn Sandgren Indeed!
Patti, you have not changed since high school. Just as cute and funny as ever, and wise. Love ya still.
Deep water, clear and clean! What a beautiful soul!
I had the pleasure of seeing her at the Herodeion in Athens 6/22/13. Still is an awesome performer and inspiration.
i love Patti Smith,what a great n beautiful artist.
Patti!! One of the elite I love this lady!! She just have a blessed spirit.
OH MY GOD- that is so sweet that Patti is his gal! MADE MY DAY! PATTIIIIIIIIiiii!!!!!!
i don't think a more adorable eloquent being has ever graced the earth
Wow George had Patti Smith blushing!!! In my view this is was an amazing interviewer and guest interaction. They both Rock!! Well Done very inspirational. Thanks
I love Patti.....
Amazing human being.
I wish she was my mother
patti is pure wisdom. she makes life more beautiful
You are definitely one of the best interviewers out here.
I love You. You are one the people I never felt alone. You are so beautiful.
absolutely honest to her cause
This is George at his best, I swear. I just love this interview.
