I think it is wrong to pigeonhole her as Punk. She is too courageous to be a punk. There is an abrasive elegance to Patti Smith and her art. Even when abrasive, her work is proper and beautiful. All of us can learn so much from her. I have. She earns our respect for her as a role-model for the Rock Industry, Popular Culture and our efforts fighting for Social, Economic and Political Justice.
+Jules Winfield She has had a wandering eye since she was a young child, for which she had to wear an eye patch, but her parents couldn't afford the surgery that would have fixed it. Furthermore, when she was 30 she fell off a stage in Florida and hit her head, causing permanent damage to her vision. That is one reason she was never able to drive. However, I haven't seen her ever let those things or anything else hold her back. She is a strong, beautiful, inspirational woman.
I started reading Just kids because it's the book of the month of the book club I attend to, I don't think I'd have picked this book otherwise but I'm glad this book encountered me by destiny or whatever. I can't put the it down and I'm totally in love with her and Robert Mapplethorpe. She is a genius and her smile is just pure poetry.
pattys music an art was my safe place in life in the the 70's as a teen.. i also lived outside of detroit. saw her at several differant venues.. got to meet the band at a record store in sterling hts michigan. was great. the store no longer exists. saw her play at the masonic temple, second chance lounge in ann arbor.. an a u of m campus in detroit. i waited to meet her after one shows..and i got to but it was brief.. felt like she had no time for a discussion.. but after all it was after a show.. i was bummed but oh well.. fred played with them as well. but none the less she inspired me.. today i found the whole easter album on you tube an wow that took me back to 17-18 again. im 59 now. i cranked it up an belted out with some songs. funny how you remember words to music you havent listened to for many many years. i still have all her albums an ticket stubs from back then.. patty i still love you and every thing about you. awsome woman.. fan who lives in virginia now..
In March 1976, I read Patti Smith's poetry -- unlike anything I had read, and Wow! I already had an album of hers, and went on, in a trance of inspiration from her poetry to create that summer a free concert series in my city showcasing young jazz musicians, to which thousands came. She was the living personification of "if you feel it, it has dignity. If you can dream it, you can do it." More inspiring people please!
thanks for your comment, -- I knew smart and intelligent women who really liked her, too. Glad you mentioned CBGB, which of course ...... putting bands on can be a rush, so much (undiscovered) talent out there!
Looking at Patti in photographs always intimidated me growing up, so I stayed away from her art. Now seeing her here so gentle and wise I'm going to pick up her books and know her better. Thank you, Democracy Now!
I adore her. she's a huge inspiration and influence on me as an artist. so brave, so beautiful and a great prophet & visionary in our times. Kate Moss has a wall eye too, so haters fuck off! If you only see the surface you, yourself have no depth. Listen to her. People Have The Power ought to be the anthem for Bernie's presidential campaign!
Fascinating ! Later she wrote The Coral Sea : another tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe. Short enough to be read at a single sitting , the book's prose reads like poetry . Frankly surreal , it charts a young man's voyage across the seas to find The Southern Star . It's a metaphor for the process of dying . In the final lines the soul of Robert is freed from his earthly body by the Hand of God . The writing at the end - and throughout - is worthy of William Blake .
Astounding humility! She says she's not a musician, true enough, yet she's responsible for some of the greatest/best songs in rock history: Because the Night, Frederick, Horses, etc.
I've listened to "Just Kids" on CD, and I love it! I laugh, I cry, I feel as though I'm there *with* Patti Smith. I feel as though I'm *in* the story. :)
I believe just coz we are made to live ln communitys people think they are not as we once were "as tribes " sharmen sharwomen but we are once again hand in hand we are once again as tribes, David Lloyd o.w.
Patti, you are wrong, so wrong - you ARE a musician and not just -a- musician but a truly special musician. NO ARGUMENTS; NO DISCUSSIONS ALLOWED! I Thank god for having you here on earth!
You know I love me some strong women, and it seems to me that, cents the internet is going to replace cable tv. I think Democracy Now needs to bring more women to the fore front.
I loved each of these books. I too like "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit." Walking with the people one has lost is a beautiful idea. I will try this.
I wonder why she never questions the questioner? She answers instead of saying 'What do you mean by that?' As though the questioner already knows exactly what they are talking about.
Read Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil and you will never look at her the same way again. Like Courtney Live she operated by coupling with talented men and exploiting those relationships to the fullest. Don't bring it up though or she will cry sexism.

+youngbuck189 well, back in the day, Patti Smith created an earthquake in the creative community, with the help of Malplethorpe and Springsteen and vice versa. At one point, she was Grungebands. She was the young poet.

+Michael Reid Perry Very well said! I totaly agree!
+Jules Winfield, in "M Train" Smith makes a brief reference to having a wall-eye.

+Jules Winfield I'm sure you didn't mean it in any bad way, just glad to give some info on her, she is my role model :)
Domina Elle Thank you for your insight. She is Punk, and so much more.
Patty is so intelligent, caring, thoughtful and a truly great, great, communicator.

She is so beautiful, a poet of such depth and awareness and her voice in song and poetry is
music and wisdom .
I love Patti's guts - her amazing guts!

Patti is amazing.
She speaks very thoughtfully, and intellectually, about artists and art.
Patti is so warm in concert and her happiness shines through. It's good to see Patti coming into her own as we all grow older together!

She is real and genius and hope she lives to 100, and damn I miss her husband badly too, right on Patti.

Anyone who’s read just kids knows she’s a poet before a musician, like she basically claims here
A female Dylan.
Goddess, she's absolutely amazing.
PLEASE HAVE PATTI BACK TO THE STUDIO SOON AND OFTEN!

What a beautiful soul
Just finished the book. We are by chance the same age. It helped me think about that which is inevitable. And I like coffee !

This is my new favorite thing. I needed to connect with this so badly today, and I hadn't known it til I heard it. Thank you so much!

LOVE IT/ TRUE GREENWICH ICON WITH AN NUCLEAR IQ

Just Kids = Superior.
She is so incredibly brilliant and talented, but unlike so many famous artists, she has a genuine humility, which I find so endearing.
