The first dog I paid for myself as a teen had been taken to the shelter 5 times. When we left they said "he'll be back". I was so sad. He stood the entire first day home, like he knew he shouldn't get comfortable. I had him for 6 wonderful years.
Edit- he was about 2 when we got him. Unfortunately he ended up having a brain tumor. It wasn't treatable so we just spoiled him even more. After 3 months he seemed to be in bad pain. He went to sleep for the final time in my arms.

This happened to my poor baby. She lost her first owner in a fire. She got adopted, neglected and possibly even abused, then surrendered after a year. I got her after that terrible family tried to label her as aggressive and I was forced to sign a bite waiver. Needless to say, she's never bitten me and she's the sweetest thing. Like you, I had to take my time earning her trust. So worth it. Now she lives her golden years loved.
Edit: I'm sorry that I haven't been able to respond to every reply left here! But, I do have video of the dog I mention on my channel if you're interested. Can definitely answer questions there, as I'll get notified of those comments!

Lol I bought a dog with borrowed money and payed for vet bills with a credit card. Needless to say I've been debt free for a while and I still have him 6 years later. Not to say I recommend that route, but perseverance seems to be the main thing you have to worry about.

Our cat was a twice surrendered pet. We actually went to get a kitten, but he jumped on my lap, put a paw on my chest and yelled in my face... So of course we took him home. If a cat chooses you, you belong to them. Those are the rules.
He was about a year old when we got him and quite institutionalized. He hated closed doors and was convinced he was being taken back any time we took him to the vet. He's 13 now and a very well loved old man. He took about 2 years to fully trust us, but we have patience with animals. Enough love and they all eventually come around. It takes time, but he's a part of our family and he lives a life of peace and pleasure.
And I'm still his favourite. 💗

I've always loved animals and I use to love being around people as well. I'm currently 51 years old and the older I get the more and more I prefer being around animals and I'm beginning to seriously dislike being around people.
I can't possibly figure out why someone would adopt her only to return her a few days later.. Chocolate isn't a high maintenance or attention type of breed of dog. For a medium sized dog she's pretty low maintenance other than brushing her frequently to prevent painful Matt's and tangles. I wish so much that I was American and lived close enough to be able to apply to adopt Chocolate. My heart just breaks & aches for her. I'd love to be her forever home and family member.
I truly hope that Chocolate is adopted into the perfect forever family for her!! If I was able to I would love to have her as my furry family member and my daily walk & cuddle buddy.

My kittens name is Noodle too. She's really sweet but also super hyper, she even has her ferocious moments, but she's still learning so all we have to do is teach her. And years ago when we still had our cat named fluffy, she did not like me for the longest time, and before she passed she was ok with me being around her and she wasn't so upset like she usually was when I'd try to pet her. It just took a lot of patience and effort, because she wasnt always mean she was just unpredictable. Plus fluffy used to be feral before my uncle found her, so she had her other reasons to be protective of herself. She was never alone though she loved my grandma and spent a lot of her time with her.

Back in 1996 I adopted the sweetest little mutt ever. Her former owners left their phone number as part of the adoption papers. I called the number after I'd had Sammie a couple of months, just to let them know that she was in safe hands, and hadn't been "put down". The person who answered the call was Sammie's former owner's aunt. She let me know the Sammi's former family had lost their home, and were in tears having to surrender her to the SPCA. She thanked me for calling, and assured me that her niece would be so happy to know that Sammie made it out alive.
All to say, sometimes pets are surrendered for reasons outside of the owner's control.
But I'm sure most often, they are left by shitty people.

You cannot get a true idea of a dog's behavior in a shelter environment. A lot of these adoptions fail because the dogs settle into their home lives and behavior issues crop up that were not able to be seen by shelter workers. Sometimes they discover that the dog is reactive to children or their other pets and the safest choice for them is to just give the dog back to avoid someone getting hurt. It's not always the people's fault and it's not always the dog's fault. Sometimes it just doesn't work out.

When I adopted my cat, the shelter warned me that he was an absolute nightmare. He spent 5 years as a stray, was finally adopted by a family, and returned within two hours. He broke into their birdcage, ate their bird, then picked a fight with their dog, immediately after they got him home. “Not to be trusted with kids, babies, or any other pets”, they said. Well two years on, and it’s taken some time, but he’s the sweetest boy I could ever imagine. Still a little shit, but now he’s my little shit ❤️

I had actually adopted a dog from a very dark and depressing case but the owner had committed suicide in front of the dog and it wasn't discovered until weeks later. He was completely shut down and miserable. I used to work with a rescue group and when I showed up all i could do was just cry for the dog. He stayed in that spot refusing to be moved and would bite anyone who tried still covered in the blood of his owner... I just sat there for hours just crying for this dog and he just climbed in my lap and i can't ever imagine just rehoming him. Poor guy went though enough and stories like this make me cry.

It's absolutely saddening what happened with Chocolate (and I sincerely hope she finds/has found the right home), but that's how it is.

I understand. I Adopted my dog from a shelter. I had fallen for her and wanted to adopt before I heard she was already claimed/spoken for. That person brought her back and immediately I adopted her with my partner of 10 years. I worked with her so much. It took three years to get her to stop marking out of emotional responses to different (minor) unpredictable issues. She would make any male's presence in my home (besides my partner) unbearable with scream barking and then peeing if we tried to remove her. I worked constantly with her to try to get her comfortable with so many things. She then had an injury where her back was severely damaged. Thousands of dollars and so much in-home rehab later she was able to walk but all training and conditioning never came back no matter how hard I tried. And it slowly got worse instead of better. Before her injury I had tried to rehome her but it wouldn't work. She would run away. We got her back. Eventually, after so much stress in our home, almost breaking up the family in the end, she was eventually euthanized. I feel so heartbroken over it. It haunts me because I loved her and felt absolutely forced. But some dogs are extremely difficult and keeping them can break apart families. While giving them back to a shelter may be possible, it isn't always. For those who do, better to realize early the fit isn't right, than for everyone to suffer longer until the dog has worse readoption options later. That first adopter in my dog's case figured it out early and good for them and the dog. RIP

You’re seriously blaming these people for a medical issue that they have no control over. They obviously cared a lot for the dog if they gave all the supplies to the new owner instead of taking everything back for a refund, clearly they wanted the dog to be happy and we’re crushed that it didn’t work out due to, again, a medical issue that they had no control over

As much as I hate that I can’t afford more birds (I already own 2 budgies, a green cheek conure, and a cockatiel) and it seems unfair for people that aren’t rich, I kind of feel like all pets need to have that high price tag. Birds are incredibly social animals and need a lot of attention, and special care along with general bird keeping knowledge. Most birds have massive price tags to discourage impulse buys as most species live 15-80 years, and it’s a huge commitment. Owning birds is a massive financial and way of life sacrifice, but for those that understand what we’re getting into, it’s a huge blessing, even if it is like raising perpetual toddlers for their entire lives.

My baby girl was brought back twice. Who knows what the first year and a half of her life was like but it gave her severe anxiety/depression. I have anxiety and depression myself so, as I helped her with hers, she was helping me with mine. It took a lot of time and work but she's opened up and is such a sweetheart. Thank you for doing the work you do.

I got my dog from a shelter and she was so happy to see me the first time we met she peed ALL over the floor. That's how I knew she had to come home with me. She was so happy to see someone and I just can't imagine taking her back and doing that to her... It breaks my heart.

I adopted two dogs that were returned after their respective adopters gave up on them. They were so sad, but after time they regained their trust and their smiles. It's never too late to turn their lives around. If you adopt, please make sure you're committed as you're taking a life in your hands.

This is so heartbreaking. When you get a pet, they're a member of your family. I can't imagine returning a pet to a shelter after adopting them.

I could never give a fur child back after adoption! They don't know why nor what happened & get depressed. Some give up & wuther away. It's better to return than just kick them out or dump them in land fills though.

Yea, sometimes tho certain dogs are meant to be single pets and when you adopt a dog not knowing their needs, if one finds that their home is unaccomodative for the dog, the best decision for everyone is to resurrender, as heartbreaking as it is.

@@rockykanaka I don't understand why some people will adopt a dog and then return it to the shelter when all they have to do is higher a good trainer and start training thier new dog,it takes time for dogs to adjust to a environment and they pick up some bad habits being in a shelter, but they are not broken with love and patience and training right away they will turn out to be the best dogs because they will be so grateful to be in a new home with a owner who is loving but also has a firm leader that they can look up to,it's to bad shelters don't set people up with a training program for shelter dogs ,it should be mandatory this way dogs will have a better chance to stay in a home that they get adopted from poor chocolate where are u located I would love to put my application in for her and I would get training set up right away to help her poor thing she is so beautiful and she looks so sad I don't want her to get adopted again and returned again how selfish for some one to go and do to her they are selfish and irresponsible and my heartaches for her

@@jenniferfloyd9179most of the shelters actually pay for the trainers. Some shelters will even send the 800 ever month for training.
