Man, one great thing about those 1980's cellar dweller Braves teams was that their games on TV were excellent sleep fodder - especially on hot humid summer nights.

Great blast from the past!! A couple of observations: 3B umpire Tom Hallion was in the famous video with Mets manager Terry Collins and the Braves' Ron Gant is now a Fox5 Atlanta anchor.

This is John Smoltz 2nd career start.
I watched the Braves and Cubs just about every day back then. Good chance I watched this game since I was a Reds fan first. Reds came in 2nd place every year Rose was the manager for a full season. He just couldn't get them over the top.
It's always good to hear Skip,Ernie and Pete. They were very good and its hard to believe they are all gone now.

Pete was a better manger than some people give him credit for. Had a lot of young players he brought a long. I also probably watched this game i know i have a tape of it somewhere. Lived in va beach only chance to see the reds was when they played the mets or braves. Loved the braves anouncers rip.

Smoltz's 2nd MLB start. I was at his first -- July 23rd at Shea Stadium. Even as a Mets fan, I kept track of him the rest of the year and copied out all his line scores from the paper -- this Reds team was a tough test for him and he didn't come into his own until 1989... still, the next best thing to being able to see his debut again.

54-106 Braves of '88. I had cable TV (and thus TBS) for most of the 1980s. The Braves were on TV all the time. As much as I liked baseball, this team was practically unwatchable until 1991.

My little league team was the Braves, so I tried to like the Braves then. Living in Boston, TBS and WWOR from New York gave us National League games, so I got to see what was going on in the N.L. and not necessarily to see the Braves.

Treadway did play a few years with the Braves...I think 1990-1992. Blocker tried out as a replacement player during the strike but didn't make the cut.

    • @rockmonroe1754

Treadway was traded from the Reds to the Braves before the 1989 season for cash. He had some solid years for the Braves. Cincinnati should have kept him.

My VCR tapes aren't labelled, so I don't know exactly what I have left to convert and upload (though random Reds games is a very safe bet).
WGN/TBS broadcast all games back then, so Cubs & Braves are also well represented (whenever they played the Reds - of course).
