    Thank you, Pete, for your dedication and passion for baseball. You played the game with an all-out, no-holds-barred approach that was truly inspiring. Growing up, my parents often spoke of you, and the fact that my father attended school with you made it even more special for me. Your contributions to the sport have left a lasting impact, and I am grateful for the opportunity to express my appreciation.

      Everyone knows that if you bet on baseball, you are banned.
      Why? cause it leads to fixed games, pre determined games, organized crime involved.
      In Pete Rose's case, he lied and was in denial that he bet on baseball, then finally admitted to it. How can we believe someone who was lying for years?
      He did bet on his own team as well. But the point is, you bet, you're out.

    In this game, Steve Garvey is playing 1st base for the visiting Padres when Pete Rose gets one of the biggest hits in MLB history. As a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan, I will never forget our 1984 WS victory over San Diego, and Steve Garvey was playing 1st base at Tiger Stadium when Kirk Gibson hit his 3-run 8th inning homer to basically seal it for Detroit. Seven years earlier at Yankee Stadium, Steve Garvey was the Dodger 1st basemen during WS game 6 when Reggie Jackson hit 3 home runs on 3 consecutive pitches and the Yankees became 1977 world champs. Finally, in April 1974 Steve Garvey was at 1st base for the visiting Dodgers when they played the Atlanta Braves and Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run - passing Babe Ruth.

    Between youtube videos and baseball articles I've read through the years, something interesting about Steve Garvey: He was on the field playing 1st base when Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run in '74, he was also playing first base when Reggie Jackson hit 3 home runs in Game 6 of '77 WS......same thing in '84 when Kirk Gibson hit the euphoric Game 5 WS home run that virtually sank the Padres....and was out there at 1st base when Pete Rose gets the all time hits record.

      Rule 21 is pretty clear what will happen to a player or manager if they bet on a game that they have any part in. The consequences are being put on the permanently ineligible list. The Hall of Fame considers anyone on that list ineligible to be placed on the ballot. Time is not on his side anymore than it is not on Joe Jackson's side. It's not like there wasn't a precedent set by MLB when Joe Jackson threw a game (when Rule 21 didn't even exist), and he was permanently banned.

    Of course, some of you lived through the days when Henry Aaron blasted his 715th career homer to get past Babe Ruth's 714 homers. There is some affinity to that baseball milestone on April 10, 1974 and the video you saw as Pete Rose at Riverfront Stadium blasting a basehit (his 4,192nd) on September 16, 1985, that almost went for a ground-rule double--once I saw the ball go down to the astro-turf in left-center field, I knew Pete made history. I was 15 years old and in Chicago, IL when Rose made history. The affinity between these two events already mentioned was the loudest roar of the crowd, congratulations from the teammates, fireworks exploding above the stadium in celebration. (The Hank Aaron 715th homer had about 50 pieces of fireworks exploding; for Pete's 4192, I think about 200-300 pieces of fireworks went off.) Just before that trouble Pete Rose had from gambling, Pete Rose was the most-adored icon in Major League Baseball--almost as iconic as the great Reggie Jackson.

    A great moment, to be sure, but celebrated at the wrong time. Rose actually broke the record a few days earlier. Cobb only had 4,189 hits, not 4,191. Researchers in the 70s found one of his games was counted twice in his stats, but MLB was too stubborn to change its record books.

    Ty Cobb & Tris Speaker both threw multiple games for money and signed statements admitting this for then MLB commissioner Kennesaw Landis. Both Ty Cobb & Tris Speaker are in the Hall of Fame and were not banned from baseball. Pete Rose never bet against his own team and has been banned from baseball by over zealous commissioners Bud Selig and Rob Manfred. Under Rob Manfred's commissioner watch, Major League Baseball has had ownership in the web's two biggest gambling websites (Fanduel & DraftKings), but cites it is against gambling and cites this as the primary reason Pete Rose has been banned from baseball for Life and will not be reinstated. With many other Hall of Famers having been caught and admitted to gambling on baseball against their own teams, Selig and Manfred's stance against Rose who only bet on his team to win is both hypocritical, inconsistent, over-zealous and the penalty does not fit the crime. Hall of Famers Whitey Ford and Gaylord Perry also have been caught doctoring baseballes. Ford admitted to doctoring baseball's repeatedly during the last years of his career and also admitted to betting on baseball and to betting to strike out Willie Mays etc. Ford was never banned from baseball for betting on baseball or docotring baseballs-even after having been caught doing so and admitting to doing so. Gaylord Perry threw spitters and "rosin" puffball pitches were used by Perry throughout his career and Perry was caught cheating repeatedly. Perry admitted to cheating throughout his career. Both Whitey Ford and Gaylord Perry are members of the hall of fame. Petition #1 to put Rose into the hall of fame: petitions.moveon.org/sign/put-pete-rose-in-the

      I'm in Cincinnati. Johnny Bench is who did most of the damage to Rose. Bench was the star of that team back then, and Rose eclipsed him with the "hit." Bench can't handle it and has been lobbying Hall of Fame guys to boycott a Pete rose induction ceremony. Three baseball commissioners knew about it and that's why they won't induct Pete.

      @1981lashlarue 8 лет назад +2

      +terminat1 You are correct. The historians discovered that two of Cobb's hits were counted twice and thus only had 4,189. Therefore Pete actually broke the record when he was playing on the road in Chicago!

      @@davidrice3337 He hurt the game by putting the commissioner and the rest of MLB at risk and having to make a decision against one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He thought he was untouchable so he played the denial game and lost out on his chance to let baseball let this go away before the report was ever released. Then he lost out on his chance to ever let it go away by denying it for years and years with the same blame game against the commissioner, Dowd, the press, and everyone else that did something in baseball that could have been worse than his gambling. This wasn't about anyone else. It was about him and disrespecting the game and breaking rule 21. If he didn't think it was such a big deal, then why didn't he admit it right away? I don't think that question needs to be answered because Pete knew what the punishment was and he was trying to avoid that punishment. As screwed up as baseball is now, not backing down from this is the one right decision they've made in a very long time.
