As a Sox fan, the 90 Reds are one of my favorite teams of my lifetime. Like the 05 Sox, they were one-year juggernauts. The 80s and early 90s were somewhat low on power hitting. Two guys that hit HRs in this game, Dunston and Sandberg, had really dead level swings. Sandberg would hit 40 homers this year and win the MVP. He was probably the only Cub that got better from 89. Eric Davis was a HOFer cut short by unusual health problems. 1990 was his last year of being a star. We need more guys like him that hit for power but also steal bases. F*** analytics, run.
How cool is this game you get to see Harry Caray, Mitch Williams, Joe Girardi, John Mcsherry, Greg maddux, Ken Griffey Sr and Ryan Sandburg all in the same game plus the Reds team that was on there way to a world championship
Tim Birtsas comes in to pitch in 1st inning after the Cubs chase Scott Scudder out with 5 runs.. Tim Birtsas is from Clarkston ,Mi and still lives there. He bought a car from my work and bought us all pizza and wings for lunch and we talked baseball.. He's a real nice guy
S C Scott Scudder still lives in Paris, we both went to Prairiland high school and he is friends with my grandfather. Funny enough they ref basketball games together sometimes
I agree. I think I miss those great Reds teams that played there. Great American Ballpark has really had no success or championships. Riverfront shined with it.
My first world series I watched was 91* Twins vs Braves* so it's good to go back n watch this. Do you by any chance have the game against the Cubs from August 1990 when Lou Piniella tossed first base out into right field? I was in the stands that night. My late grandparents taped the game off WGN but I'm not sure what's happened to that tape the past several years.
@@CatsClaw44 for sure,we can all be glad they got healthy at the right time. did Jack Armstrong get injured after (or during) the all star game? Cuz he really fell off. Insane first half, started the all star game at like 8-0
hushg2000 Cubs pitching was not nearly as good in 1990 as it was in 1989 was the major cause. And certain players didn’t live up to expectations like Jerome Walton.
I think considering how awful or mediocre the Cubs were in 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991... that the 1989 is the fluke season. They were always mediocre, and had 1 year way above their level
@@MrTCHOSS This. The AL East was just weak in 89. Offensively the Cubs of the late 80s/early 90s were very weak at SS, C, 3B, LF, CF. In 89 they just got lucky with Walton and Smith and Mitch Williams and a couple others. Really all you need is timely hitting and a bullpen. If a bullpen gets hot enough you can ride that all the way - just look at this Reds team, also one and done like the 89 Cubs. Much later the Royals would win two pennants in a row with a mediocre team that was really clutch, plus a godlike bullpen.
Wow......if there was instant replay at the time during the game, the line drive out by Hatcher would have resulted in a double play (2:04:14). Even as a Reds fan, that was a horrible call. O'Neill was out by at least a foot trying to get back to 1st Base.
I hated it when the Cubs brought out these gray uniforms over their blue jerseys and white pants from the 80s. Cubs would reboot the blue jerseys in 1994 and update in 1998 which are currently worn still to this day and they won the World Series clincher in them as well.
@@briancalifornia1 Yeah they wore those at home for like a decade then they started wearing the home uniforms exclusively. They wore the blue tops for a couple of games back in 2019 but returned to the whites. The blue tops are still worn heavily on the road more than the gray tops.
Always enjoyed Reds and cubs not the same as the Cubs and Cardinals special event when they weren't in the same division. However I personally like it because I'm in Fort Wayne Indiana which is Cub territory but there's tons of Red fans. It's about the same distance from both cities roughly halfway between the two. So something special here. Back in the day it was a big rivalry originally Because Chicago and St Louis roughly the same distance from Chicago and Cincinnati. Course it's different with Illinois and Missouri being next to each other. And also to Cardinals are such an elite team are Cubs are kind of lovable losers. In Reds are somewhere in the middle so it wasn't quite the same dynamic. And laterv when are the Cubs and the Reds were both in the NL Central after they realigned the divisions Reds were never any good so it still wasn't the same thing.
listening to harry and Steve was never boring, great post!
This was such a talented Cubs team, that simply underperformed.
totally agree. they did the same in 91. underperformed.

Sandberg didn't win the MVP in 1990 (he finished 4th to Barry Bonds); Ryno won the MVP in 1984.
And a great defender with an electric arm.
What a great team! 1990 Reds have to be in the talks of greatest teams of all time
damn Reds! they did go on to win the World Series in 1990.

Thank you very for posting these old Cubs game. I love watching these old games to see players that I never got to see play
Although the traffic was terrible, I still miss Riverfront.
I agree. I think I miss those great Reds teams that played there. Great American Ballpark has really had no success or championships. Riverfront shined with it.
Yeah I thought it was great being there with 30000+ fans
I've been to Great American, and I loved it. I am not a Reds fan. Never went to Riverfront, but c'mon, that turf is hideous!
What a great team of destiny.. 1990 Reds.
Wire to wire
Help's that the starters new it was a 6 inning game. Get to the nasty boys and collect your win.
Love seeing Ken Griffey Sr. still playing with the Reds in 1990. Only player left from the Big Red Machine days.
Yep, even though Tony Perez was part of the staff.
One of greatest line up of classic Cubs team.
Thank you so much i love this nostalgic look at my childhood cubbies!
those Reds never really cooled down. :)
MickeyMorandini1 my uncle played for the reds his name is Gino minutelli
What a job by birtas and Mahller. Unsung members of the bullpen. Along with layana.

The Reds. they're my next team after the Cubs. is that wrong? It's who I grew up watching. Cubs and Reds.
Not only was this the best of the cookie cutter parks those are the best Reds uniforms ever by far
They started wearing pinstripes a year or 2 later, didn’t like the home uni’s, but the away version was great
Go Reds.
I can't listen to Harry for more than fifteen seconds before I bust out laughing.
he's drunk.... Again

@Deacon Blues No it was Lou. He grabbed, threw it, ran out and picked it up and threw it again.
What a great game!

Reds got off to such a great start that year. The were only about .500 after the all Star Break though
That was due to injuries. They got healthy at the end of the season and started dominating again, going 8-2 in the playoffs including 4-1 on the road.
@@CatsClaw44 for sure,we can all be glad they got healthy at the right time. did Jack Armstrong get injured after (or during) the all star game? Cuz he really fell off. Insane first half, started the all star game at like 8-0
Great game- especially if you're a reds fan. Past glory
Well the Reds are in position to enjoy present day glory.
thx for posting
Ah when they played for the game!
Cubs lineup was actually pretty solid.
Yup no pitching
Yep, people forget that they were the reigning NL East champs.

What a disastrous outing by the reds pitcher he gave up 3 homers 5 runs and injured his own catcher and didn’t even complete half inning!!!

This guy is definitely trolling.
Are you telling me a MLB hitter can hit a homer and simply jog around the bases without a bat flip, dancing, and jewelry?
