MJ has his arms both at his front when he spins, plus his starting technique with his foot is different. If you watch carefully he puts one foot around the other one then uses that leg position as a slingshot to spin around. Not many people replicate this properly. This is a good tutorial but it's not quite accurate. I studied MJ videos to get it down, but I haven't seen a tutorial that has done MJ justice. Gotta do it yourself sometimes!
Every dancer has to do it there specific way.

@@YamiAnubisX Your own freestyle dance is one thing, but my main point is that this video is for teaching that one specific move, so I feel like I need so say something when I see some obvious errors in the technique.

To be honest people really shouldn't try copying MJ moves and do it there own way as that's how dancing works, one has to make it there own in order for it to be a success.

*As the most unlikely candidate, I easily mastered a spin on my right heel with the left foot on top of it. This is the most difficult spot but only took about 20 minutes to jet through it at Michael's blurring speed. I see now Michael does it on the balls of his feet, heels and even does switch foot through a bedazzling set of spin.*

The best shot is in Smooth Criminal video when he spins on the table top. The left foot's toe is in contact, the whole right foot is skimming but not touching all the way around the spin. He decides how many spins there will be and to finish, pops up his whole body from the left toe and then plants either whole foot or tips of toes into the mid-air lunge, depending on the music

I tried this spin at nauseum as a kid and a teenager, more than 30 years ago. I have watched MJ do that signature spin since he was a teenager and I was a little kid, & used to get dizzy as hell trying to do it. i used to have dreams of doing it correctly. This guy in the video's feet look just like MJ's when he did it. I have not seen any other entertainer pull off this spin like MJ. Not even Prince. It's the only move that has remained a part of MJ's arsenal since 1974.
Step 10 - get someone who can ACTUALLY dance like Michael Jackson to demonstrate.

MJs spin has no equal. its the smoothest spin I have ever seen.

he truly was/is the greatest dancer. he did all this, moonwalk, popping, sliding and spinning wearing shoes and all the while singing too!

ooh god...these videos remember me when i started to practice so i could dance like michael jackson..and now because of hard training and a lot of time i can do it ( yaaaay!! ) ..but even now i find it dificult to do the spins
This guy is good in breaking down those classic MJ steps :D
and if you look at those old MJ vidoes when he does those spins, he does lift his feet, ever so slightly
what i mean is dont swing your arms..throw your body into the spin...your arms can help alittle but during the spin your arms need to be in..to get the hang of the movement..try a simple turn take your right foot and place it on the left side of your left foot "crossing" and pivot your body 360 deg. torwards your left...this simple motion will get you used to the turn..and build stabilty..keep practicing and try to ass more force and speed to it as you keep doing it

@chrisrulezs, MJ wasn't a God or a perfect being that could do stuff we can't do... but he had his personal touch to his dance moves: this cideo is only showing how to do it instead of teaching us to BE MJ... don't be so negative, you can still try it just for having fun, and maybe impress your friends at the disco... no one is trying to look like michael jackson in this video! :)

there's a lot missing here from the real spin. you have to look at super slo mo many times to get what it looks like. mjj turns his head to the left 1/4 turn and extends arms, his weight is on his left foot -on the ball of the foot VERY important - leading with the right heel, snap the right leg in front of the left leg and carry thro to left motion (spin). Skim the right heel over the floor very close and begin to snap in arms to body. to finish, you should be able to launch up from left toe

nice tips, I can see how MJ does do it with the heels tucked in. MJ can spin like crazy, of course he's better! but natural talent and plenty of time to practice goes a long way.

well said,and he had extreme god given talent..not trying to downplay that at all..if dancing was part of a transformers plot.then he would be optimus prime,but still even as a child his dad saw his extreme talent and pushed him extremely hard to practice nonstop

@sz11steve yes but its kind of a combo of the sole of the shoes, the type of floor, and proficiency at spinning. with alot of practice (or innate ability which i dont have lol) you can train urself to do more spins on "grippier" shoes and floors. Proficiency changes how the other stuff comes in. just like anything else
if you want it too have the same effect michael gave you need to do it on the heal...looks more like a ballet turn on the ball of foot..when its suppose to look more like how the tasmanian devel spins..you might be able to pull it off on ball of foot..but you wont get far

I see it this way: I think he was born with a natural gift for moving, rythm, singing, performing... then he was born in a specific space of time which provided him the perfect environment to develop his skills. The environment was provided by his music-loving family, but also by the era, which witnessed the best black music ever done. That's how u get a genius. It's the same story for Mozart.

ur spinning on the ball of ur foot. ur heel is slightly off the ground though so it makes it kinda look like ur spinning on ur heels. in ballet, you spin on a high releve (or forced arch).
@LBPFR34K its easy, but you need to keep your eyes open as you do it.. its tempting to shut your eyes, but keep them open

You're basically spinning with the ball of your supporting foot.
Your non supported foot isn't touching the ground, but it gives the illusion that both feet are on the ground but they're really not.
It's easier in shoes, but that's just for me.

This doesn't matter,
I have learned about 5 different Spins yet (this will be the 6th)
, some are focused on spinning on heel, other on toe.
I would avdice spinning on your toe, it may need more practise, than heel-spinning,
but you will be able to spin much faster and longer =)
Anyways, practise both (toe and heel) and decide after mastered them ;P
