    When people say that they can barely draw a stick figure, it just means that they haven't developed the skill to create more believable figures in interesting poses. I wanted to share how I start every character drawing with basic stick figures and "build out" the body from these primitive stick figure drawings. This is my process for growing as an artist as well, as I show you how I do anatomy studies to reach beyond what my imagination is limited to, and how I expand my visual library to be able to draw more dynamic bodies with information I learn during my studies.

    I remember back in high school my friends going "God, I wish I could draw like you! I can barely draw a stick figure...." only for me to go... "Oh really? Here look at these...." then plop down 3 sketch books that had only stick figures in it. Followed by "If you can draw a stick figure you can draw a human."
    Never understood people who use them "only being able to draw a stick figure" as a reason why they can't draw.

    Great video Trent.
    Reminds me of an art class when the professor was teaching figure drawing using stick figures that she built up into people.
    The students all looked at each other like: "I feel dumb for not figuring this out on my own, but now that I know, figure drawing just got a lot easier & more enjoyable!"

    My advice to beginners: Study proportions, perspective and just break the body into basic shapes.
    Proportions alone make a huge difference in the quality of your work.

      So true, I was struggling for a while and not understanding why until I sat down and worked on proportions for maybe like...an hour, and that one hour jumped me WAY ahead of where I was at the time; because I had just been making the same mistakes over and over without correcting them.

    it's so true, everyone starts at or around 0, the bigger question is how much you enjoy playing around with drawing stuff, if you can't enjoy your current stage of how it feels to draw you probably never will, you'll be just happy with the end result but not the process itself.
    but if you do enjoy drawing and or painting you will get better as long as you are willing to learn.
    how long that takes is not up to you but your brain.
    but for many they say they just don't have time when they do infact have time for everything else they consider fun.
    and to them i say if you think drawing is fun then you can make time for it.
    if you got time to facebook, you can draw, if you got time to play games, you can draw, i think you get the point.
    that's the difference between those who do draw and those that don't.
    consuming vs producing.
    thanks trent, it's allways humbling looking back at ones beginnings.

      You're absolutely right.
      I think the people who become great at what they do get there because they love doing that thing. Natural talent is helpful, of course, but you're not going to master something without putting the work in. If you enjoy the work, then it feels more like playtime than work, and you'll improve a lot faster than you would if you didn't enjoy it.

    Yeah and this - 8:37 ... the way I see it - and this will sound real stupid cause I've never verbalized it, but - it's like finding the right song to have stuck in your head. You know anatomy much like you know the lyrics and the feels, say, "Straight outta Compton" gives you. But sometimes you need to stumbled upon it, the right reference - the right song in this example - and listen to the first 5 seconds (get the main gist of the pose). And then "That's it! I got it!" ... you know what look and feeling you're going for.

    Trent, could you please make a video on how to get ideas? Like when you make a character and you decide what they look like, and which things to change between each version of the same character. How do you create a visual library in your head with all these ideas? I find that I struggle with this when I try to make character sheets

  • @SL-hq2ck
    @SL-hq2ck 5 лет назад +6

    My biggest breakthrough clicks were realizing legs = arms (quads = triceps, hamstrings = biceps, for example). Once you learn something about arms it can be applied to legs and vice versa (kneecaps/elbows). The other thing was - so many art teachers and art books focus on isolated body parts - but it's the way they connect and sprout from the torso where the truth hides. If I could go back I'd say to my younger self - draw joints, not isolated bodyparts (if you learn how to draw ankles and wrists, you won't have issues drawing hands and feet). .

    I also get upset over the stick figure comment. Most people just choose not to practice. It's not like I sit down and am like "I know how to draw everrrrrythinnnnnng!" and am a badass haha. Practice makes perfect. Now on that note, I have known of people not being able to grasp perspective at all...even when they get it they don't quite get it. however, that still produces interesting art I think.
    Lastly, Modern Day James has some pretty good mech/sci-fi tutorials you might enjoy. Like you, he will show you realistic things and explain how it can be converted into your ideas but still be functional.

    Thanks for the video Trent; they’re always a kick in the britches for me.
    I’m not a professional artist, but in my own studies I also found that the book, “Goldfinger’s Anatomy for Artists; The Elements of Form” is another good resource for human anatomy.
    On another note, I still feel stuck career wise and don’t really know what to do. I went to study art with the goal of designing for games or movies, but I also feel an urge to just make my own stuff which probably isn’t commercially appealing. Then I also feel like I’ve got too many interests. I want to make animated shorts and education videos, as well, but I’m not an animator or sound designer or vfx guy, all I can really do is paint and draw.
    Have you ever felt this way as well or am I just a narcissist?

    Unfortunately some people convince themselves into two negative mind styles. The first one is "I am going to try, and if I fail, I am never going to attempt this again", the second one is "I am not even going to try, I know I am going to fail". You really got to have the personality of letting yourself go and "playing" in order to draw AND have fun. Keyword- Have Fun.

      Proko has a great series of figure drawing lessons. He starts with gesture drawing, moves onto blocks and goes from there....
      He says that gesture drawing is foundational and is one of the most important aspects, adding dynamism and energy to a pose. It needs practicing, failing and getting used to. You're talking about gesture drawing and adding form on top. If you're having trouble with drawing in general, don't useyour fingers to move around the pencil and draw with your elbow and shoulder. It's easier. Check out Proko. Make sure you have some experience drawing relatively smoothly before you start any tut, otherwise you won't be able to absorb the lessons well.

    Do you think it's important to go to art school? If yes how would it help you with game art/ concept art after finishing?

    • @pronoydutta614
      @pronoydutta614 5 лет назад

      Artschool is only a problem because it can be expensive.
      1. If they only have full time working professionals on staff or mentorship programs, that's a good thing. Some colleges hire newer artists and that's not ideal.
      2. A good art school has an extensive network of people in the industry and your fellow students/teachers can help you a find work. You can help them too. If your work isn't good, it's tough, even with help.
      3. You need to see what the student work is like on the site. Very good work is important and shows that they teach well. Ask whether they work on combined game projects or assets are imported into unreal 4, unity or frostbite, etc if they mention it.
      Some sites show good and bad work, which is honest. Even if the 'bad' pieces are fairly strong, that's a good sign. Contact colleges by email or Skype and ask tough questions about post college and how the course works.

    • @pronoydutta614
      @pronoydutta614 5 лет назад

      Nobody ever asks for college qualifications for work, but depending on the type of person you are or the training you've been exposed to, sometimes the high degree of polish and perfectionism can be more easily be expected of a graduate of a renowned or good college.

    I draw animals and animal-like creatures from time to time. My family says that I'm doing very good for someone who hasn't taken an art class since middle school. I have practiced very few times, but becuase of my phototgraphic memory, I can sort of visualize how an artist might draw it. When I see art, I look for the technique, or way the pencil or brush is stroked. I have an character in mind I'd like to get down on paper and I literally just started. I'll draw it, redraw a few details. Then I'll leave it be. When I get an idea, I'll go back and fix it. It may take a long time which doesn't matter for me because I don't plan on becoming an artist.

    The only issue I see with the male figures, the stomach doesn't sink in like that when at rest. Stomach vacuuming, yes, but at rest it doesn't sink in like that so that's not really natural.

      Naw. It just takes practice. If you can only draw stick figures, progress that to drawing sillhouettes, then progress that till you can make more dynamic poses.

    Weird how I'm drawing a 2 handed swordsman while watching this. That being said, I'm always drawing something with some kinda weapon, usually swords 😂

    Wow .. the title alone for this video is enough to anger me... Drawing characters is NOT easy, There is NOTHING easy about drawing. People are either gifted with the ability to see things as an artist and therefore able to draw and develop that skill, or they are not.
    I can easily model things in 3D software , but your stage 3 character is my limit with 2D.
