  • This unique species of plecostomus fish is not only a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts but also boasts an intriguing scientific name and distinctive physical features. The renowned ecologist Bleeker named this species in the late 1800s. The name itself is derived from Greek, where "pterygia" means wing and "hoplon" means weapon, referring to the fish's wing-like dorsal fin and horn-like protrusions.

I have the same exact fish in my 40 gallon community tank. He’s about a foot and a half. He’s a absolute unit and he’s octal so he only comes out at night.

They are venomous they do have armor, and if you take them out of the water, they can hibernate for over four months Of the tank

I got them for 14 bucks USD but I love him. He does look like a dinosaur, but he’s great with other fish at least mine is nobody bothers him. He doesn’t bother no one.

I had one in 1989 in England and since that died I have never seen another for sale in any shops or online anywhere.
I've even looked on the shops wholesale lists and nothing comes up, I don't know why...If anybody in the UK knows of any for sale, please let me know!

Don't know why it was included but in Latin scrophus means scrotum.

That’s due to the mosquito fish in the ponds. They always nip at the other fishes fins, fins do grow back rather quickly though!
