      With Signal, yes. But you'd be surprised at how many people are using Signal nowadays.
      For ProtonMail, not so much. You can still send PGP and shared password email using ProtonMail and the E2EE still works even if the other user doesn't use ProtonMail.

    Michael Bazzell of Inteltechniques, The Privacy and Security Podcast, and the free online magazine: Unredacted has mentioned some of the sites or services that you talked about. It would be nice to see you have an interview with him, but I don't know if he does anything by video, it might be just audio. He has a lot of good resources and links on his page, even some free PDF workbooks that you can download. I think that I first discovered him, when I was listening to the Reply All podcast, and they were interviewing him and getting his help in trying to solve a problem ( I can't remember what it was ). Worth checking out in my opinion.

    You're forgetting one of the biggest holes in security today, Ads! Malvertising and bad actors make it dangerous to go anywhere online. but if you setup a Pihole DNS server at home and point your router to that DNS the game changes in your favor. most ads just disappear and you can now take control and feel better about surfing. this also prevents smart devices like TV's and Amazon Echo's from phoning home constantly. My Roku TV was calling home once a minute and it can no longer do that. DNS is the next huge secuirty method of the future. But it is a very technical thing and not for everyone.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  Год назад +3

      I think your last line nailed it on the head - there are plenty of these kinds of "settings" that are free to change, but they're a bit to technical for the average person.

    Hi Josh,
    Love your videos, very informative and very helpful. I was wondering if you've already done a video on the best overall protection suite of apps? I use NordVPN and NordPass, which also has NordLocker -- but I already had and still use Sync for secure file storage. I use BitDefender for antivirus, which also has a VPN and a password manager. Both have browser plug-ins for to prevent website tracking. I'm trying to reduce my subscriptions in the New Year to cut costs in this crazy economy and it makes sense that I go all in with either Nord, Bitdefender, or perhaps some other company -- but which one? Have you done a video on the best all encompassing suite of privacy and security products? If not, I'm probably not alone here in looking for advice as to the best package for overall security.

    Josh, awesome video, you are well spoken and assertive. It made you immediately stand out among the videos I have watched this morning. I usually don't subscribe to a channel after the first two videos I watched. I actually ran into your channel while searching for "the best antivirus software for windows 11 in 2022" and came across " Don't Use a VPN...it's not the ultimate security fix you've been told." You can probably guess I was pretty far down the list by the time I ran into your video, yet it was the first one from your channel that came up.
    I don't know if you have recently tested many antivirus software providers but regardless of weather you have, would you please tell me your most revered antivirus software providers? I did not see a recent video on this subject on your channel and most the videos I saw highlighted features, user interface ease, and price point. Only one video actually compared how well they performed besides looking at AV's graph or something similar.
    I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

    The other thing you can do if you believe your social security number is out there (and how likely is it these days that it isn’t?) is request a PIN from the IRS. They will send one to you each year by mail, and you have to have it to file a return. Identity thieves are stealing social security numbers and filing fake returns so they can claim earned income and child tax credits in your name, and this prevents that. The one inconvenient thing is if you apply for a mortgage and your lender wants to pull your tax data direct from the IRS, you’ll have to give them the pin and sign some extra paperwork-it’s going to slow your mortgage process down by a few days. But worth it, since they won’t be coming at you for tax fraud when someone else abuses your identity.

    The credit freeze suggestion at the end seems a bit extreme IMO. I get why though. Most banks that I work with have pretty aggressive credit monitoring and response capabilities (e.g. USAA). So if something funny is detected they pause approval of that transaction and if I tell them that is a fraudulent transaction, they shutdown that card and issue me a new one. A headache to reenter CC for online shopping portals, but still effective. I'll need to investigate and consider this credit freeze option some more. Thanks.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  Год назад +5

      You’re unfortunately missing the point. If somebody steals your identity and goes to open a line of credit in your name with another bank, it doesn’t matter how good USAA is, they can’t do anything about it.
      A credit freeze is far from extreme, I promise you. It’s a first line of defense.

    i suppose this is an intro or overview video that free privacy tools are out there? sometimes you have to question why it is free. it is open source and have been audited by a third party? there are also other free tools depending on what you need to do which is not covered. two examples are pgp and veracrypt. but i suppose “everyone” is a double edged sword because everyone’s threat model may be different.
    also, using protonmail by itself does not make you automatically private. your messages have to be arranged to have end to end encryption enabled, otherwise it will behave like regular email since every address is not a protonmail or message to message within the same domain.

    KeepassXC for passwords is free and can be synced between devices using Dropbox or a similar cloud service. Best of all, I don't have to trust anyone with my passwords. Even if my cloud account is hacked, my Keepass file is still encrypted with a strong password.

    It's sad that we have to do all these things, at times at extra expense, just to protect our privacy. Just marveling at the enormous explosion of bloggers speaking out on every possible topic imaginable. Now imagine if all those motivated voices were to direct that energy toward the government, the real villains here. Just think of the change that could be brought about in the world. Here we all are spending time and money futilely attempting to protect ourselves when our gov is the entity tasked with this type of operation. Why do we have politicians at all if they don't do what we ask of them, or if they don't perform the tasks they promised to get elected. Gov favoring big business is what made big tech what it is. It is your elected public servants (more like self serving) that have allowed those big tech companies to get super rich stealing our information for their gain. Wouldn't it be more productive to go after them to change the world rather than spending all this time and money chasing our tails for solutions that barely work at best. Human energy is so misdirected these days, fighting losing battles is not a winning strategy and shouldn't be pushed as one.

    Secret Space Encryptor (S.S.E.) is the best password app period!
    You can even set up password protected texting. I give you the password we both use to encrypt & decrypt.
    It DOESN'T even matter of you have end to end encryption if you're using encryption. If you don't have the password you ain't decrypting the message.

    I have been using stickypassword for many years, they do have a lifetime option. Now and then they will send me an offer to buy another lifetime for sticky and give it to somebody on the cheap.
    Sticky covers Mac, PC, Icrap, Droid. It just doesent only remember passwords, you can add notes to every website that has things like storing the secret answers to questions and access codes, or what ever you want to add. Only trouble I have is if I have say 2 gmail accounts and want to save notes for both, all the info has to go into the one note for all the gmail codes or if it was another site you would have to add the secret Q's and answers to all accounts on the one note. Its really no trouble now I know that.
