I lived in Fort Mcmurray for 6 years and its the biggest fucking shit hole I've ever seen. The entire downtown is crawling with crackheads and drunks, and people are frequently assaulted and robbed in the casino/mall parking lot. I could not have moved out of the that fucking hellhole any quicker and I'm currently loving Saint John NB. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE THINKING ABOUT MOVING TO FORT MCMURRAY. Also this region of Alberta is naturally prone to natural disasters, and fucking good luck with that. The closest popular shopping centre is in Edmonton and that is a 4 1/2 hour drive away. Unless you're an alcoholic and want to ruin your life, don't move here. Workers have uprooted their lives by the hundreds only to be met by non-existent employment and eventual homelessness as the cost of living in Fort Mcmurray is one of the highest in Canada. Pay 800 for rent now? that'll be 1800-2000 in fort mac for a worse place. House costs 200k? You'll have to buy a half finished construction project for 1 1/2 million, and then the contractors will pull out of the job because insurance companies don't like covering shit that happens in a place that BOTH BURNED AND FLOODED IN FOUR FUCKING YEARS. What's going to happen in the next 20 there? Nuclear holocaust? This town is definitely culturally diverse and honestly that's the best thing about it. Other than that, I've found zero redeeming qualities in my experiences there. Don't @ me, I don't care about your opinion, I'm trying to warn anyone else who's about to make a huge mistake. Stay where you live now and try to improve that. This town is not worth it.
Im Moving back to Fort McMurray after 10 yrs in the uk .There are always jobs if you want to work and the pay is always good , during my previous stint of 5 yrs I worked with some of the best guys i ever met and made some really good friends.Also endless opportunities for recreation . Also believe it or not its cheaper to live in than Calgary right now. Pity people slag the place off ,they should try the UK where wages are miserable and the cost of living sky high and its still run like a medieval kingdom .
The hobos on almost every street corner, almost no possible employment, 3 liquor stores every 5 kms and a graduation rate of 60% and inflation so high that the real estate market has seen a 20% increase of house put on the market since mid 2017 but yet some promotional bureau can call this hellhole "beautiful" and "full of opportunity".
