The BA Boeing 767-300 such as the one at 01:55 must have been brand-spanking new when this video was made. I flew on one of them MAN-JFK the same year. No seatback tvs on those babies, but the video was far better than what was previously available on the L-1011s flying that route. Ah yes those were the days! I flew a Virgin Atlantic B742 in 1996 LHR-JFK, my first flight with seatback IFE. As I recall, four channels all on a loop. On-demand was another decade or so away. Amazing.
Amazing and unique piece of footage. Great to see all those classic jets in that livery, back when they were in they're hay day and still fairly new. Very good!
I remember when I was a kid, FAA noise laws were not so strict like they are today ( 2015 ), These 747-200/300s, DC-10s etc would take off/climb so soo low! You could literally hear them coming 10-15 seconds before it flew over...I really miss that...This takeoff brought me smiles to hear those legendary older engines roaring! :) Thank you soo much for this video :) Added to favorites
Great work for making it and posting it. It’s great to see a moment in time at the airport and on board a classic jet. Very nostalgic. Thank you for sharing
Hey British Airways, if your are reading this, you should have kept that Landor livery. You guys were much better those days. Landor colors especially on 747 were adorable
1:00 possibly United's last SP, inherited from Pan Am. If so that is a fantastically rare piece of footage of probably the most impressive Boeing ever built - and one of the rarest.
In regular economy i dont think they did. It was only what was then called Economy Select later to become World Traveler Plus. Of course Club World and First class screen were much bigger.
Everything changed now..back then, in 1990, 747-400 is still a brand new plane for everyone and we could see a lot of 747 on the tarmac waiting for their next flight like we seen in this video. Today, many airlines begin retiring their 747 in favor of 777 and A380. I miss those days..the glory days of the 747..
I'm sure onboard IFE and seat comfory nowadays is far superior to back in the 90s, but I imagine inflight service was much better back then. As for aircraft noise and airline liveries, there's no contest. Classic 3 and 4 holers dominating long haul with loud and proud engines, much better for the spotters back then!
This was the year my dad was skippering BA's 767's for his last year of service with the airline and I was skippering the 747-4 for BA - the year he retired and I stepped up in the ranks in BA - happy Landor livery days
ive been chicago 3 times betweeen 1992-1998.all the planes i flew in were 747. i remember the names of two, city of derby, and western virginia, i like take off best ,yeah looking at this brings good memories back.
the classic Landor livery was far superior to the current livery IMO. So much more elegant and regal. BA needs to return to this type of livery and image.
@@yolsclassics6347: Not those ordered by BOAC. BOAC ordered sixteen 747-136 in 1970/71 with P&W JT9D-7, and BA ordered ten 747-236 in 1974/5 with RB211-524. Subsequently, they acquired/leased other 747s from various airlines with different powerplants, but they were not owned by BA in 1993. (And BOAC never owned 747-200 series; that airline had merged with BEA and became British Airways in 1974 before the 747-236 were delivered).
I love thae old United livelry. Was that a 747-SP of Unite Airlines near the beginning of the clip? I love the sound of the engines, I used to live near the flight path for Heathrow and hearing that 747 whine s one of the best sounds to me.
these are Pratt and Whitneys. Also, what you are hearing doesn't even remotely come close to the sound of the classic RB211s. this is British Airways..oh how do I explain it...side airline. and their 742s had JT9Ds on them.

The sight of an uninterrupted line of 747s along the whole length of T4 is much missed
Engines don't sound like that anymore!!! I flew on a JAL 747 - 200 Narita to Sydney in 2001, no seat back TV on that one. Great video.

British Airways was code-sharing with us USAir back in these days. Excellent footage. That United 747SP is just beautiful!
Look how gentle that takeoff is. Also the look of the plane is so unique especially from wing view. No plane is as beautiful as the 747

That classic low rumble sound! I miss it - planes these days are too quiet.
The good old days when airline travel had a future. Planes would get bigger and bigger. Not like now :(
Thank you for sharing this. Brings back happy memories

I didn't even know that aeroplanes had personal TV screens in every seat back in 1993, that's impressive!
They had seatback tvs then. WOW
But as you can see they were small, virgin Atlantic had them too, the size of a postal stamp. Not like today
EL AL still has the really old tvs on the seatbacks, it's horrible and most of them are broken
In regular economy i dont think they did. It was only what was then called Economy Select later to become World Traveler Plus. Of course Club World and First class screen were much bigger.
and it was not on demand back then either, movies ran on a loop broadcast

The BA historic logo was much better!! why on planet earth they've changed it!
I totally agree! Far more attractive and replaced by an unprofessional looking logo.
Vintage livery and Negus too
Landor livery will always be THE British Airways livery
I always hated the landor livery, I like it a bit more now. However, the negus livery is underrated
Its lovely to see the old livery ;)
As everbody knows everything back in the day was awesome and so much better. Today everything just plain sucks
We had 8 channel PTV's in our club world seats from a very early time. Still only had the main screen in World Traveller though/
Fantastic thanks for sharing. Some of those 400s could well be still in service with BA.
I had forgotten just how good the Landor livery was......hardly ever bother with BA these days.

2:34 woooow BA 747-100 with the PW JT9 engines :-)
thx for the video, always wanted to watch BA 747-200 VIDEO, WHICH BRINGS LOTS OF MEMORIES!
What an Incredible Video :)
a minute long take off roll!
ive been chicago 3 times betweeen 1992-1998.all the planes i flew in were 747. i remember the names of two, city of derby, and western virginia, i like take off best ,yeah looking at this brings good memories back.

nice JT9D sounds. i had always been under the impression that all of BA's -200s were RR powered. guess i was proven wrong.
Their 747 100 had the P&Ws as the Rolls Royce wasn't yet offered on that plane.
@OhMaiLanta Yep, UA had a few 727s over there for onward European destinations, so did Delta at the time
That isnt a 747-200, that is a 747-136, they retired the last 136 in 1999 :-( miss these birds, great video!
All the BA 747s I flew on were -136 series -- G-AWNA, G-AWNL, G-AWNP (had the reg numbers in my BOAC Junior Jet Club log book). ;)
Wow. So much variety. Today all is two boring ass engines
That roar at 04:21...had to be a Concorde taking off, no?
probably
Landor livery timeless
BA 747-200s were Rolls Royce powered and the 300 series also had an RR engine option. But I do agree this is a PW powered 100 series
Stephen G BAOC 742s had JT9Ds.

i went to and from florida in 1992 on bdxg which was city of oxford and i live 5 miles from oxford so was quite appropriate.
The streaks on the wings remind me of the 747-186 iran air
@lonz1988 You would be correct, as all of the 200's were RR powered. This bird is clearly a P/W powered bird based on the sounds alone!
Typical 747: Rocket takeoff and gentle graceful climb into the sky
Early nineties T4...747 heaven!
How cool is that, i sight never to be seen again though.
Wow this was back in 1993. because I went to england in 2002 and british airways tail were different like red and blue strips.
I love thae old United livelry. Was that a 747-SP of Unite Airlines near the beginning of the clip? I love the sound of the engines, I used to live near the flight path for Heathrow and hearing that 747 whine s one of the best sounds to me.
this video was great, in fact it was made before I was born, I was born in 2000 so this video is very very old.
Love the -SP!
@lonz1988 Exactly that is the classic 747 136. Great aeroplane i miss them. Have they all been scrapped now,or is there any in museums anywhere?
I thought BA's 747-200's were powered by Rolls Royce engines, just like their 400 series aircraft (granted, a different varient of the engine).
These engines sound like JT9Ds, are you sure it is a -200? (because most of BA's 200s if not all had RB211s and the 100s had JT9Ds)
747 best ever and l1011 awesome
@OhMaiLanta well spotted, It was hard for me to see it even one I read your post and toook it back.
Why do I see United 727’s? Routes they took over from Pan Am?
listen to that engine sound.... wooooooooooooow ! Rolls Royce RB211 are the best :-)
these are Pratt and Whitneys. Also, what you are hearing doesn't even remotely come close to the sound of the classic RB211s.
this is British Airways..oh how do I explain it...side airline. and their 742s had JT9Ds on them.
As far as I know BA B742s were powered by RB211
Definitely an old BAOC 747-100 with P+W JT9Ds.
BOAC, but yes it is a -136 with -7A engines.
I bow to your superior knowledge, but definitely not Rolls-Royce engines of the 236s!
they had screens at the back of the seats at that time too! Were you in a Business or Economy passenger?
It was Miami then I guess. I was in high school then.
Pika Pikachu! Pika Pikachu! (I can hear everything! I can watch movies!)
RB-211s??
Pratt and Whitney's (:
Does anyone have a seat-map for this aircraft?
Nice
@vargas37 BA has never had any -SPs...
The year and month I was born lol
whoops, I meant were you "a" Business or Economy passenger?
where was this heading to anyway?
I think I heard Washington Dulles :)
Thumbs up if you spotted the concorde
WASHING MACHINE !!!!!!!!
that is a 747-100 cause it has pw engines
Youssef Saleh incorrect. this is a 742.
Oh yeah well sorry the United plane was an SP yeah.
Had the pleasure of flying on one from Fort Lauderdale fl. to London and back . 1992 I think. food sucked!
British Airways does not flies to the Hollywood Airport in FLL...
Gostei1
:'( sigh :'(
:D
