This was everything I love - a 747/100, a beautiful approach over Rhode Island and Cape Cod, down over Long Island….perfect! And it makes me very sad that I’ll never get the chance to experience this for myself - I live in the Scottish highlands and I’ve wanted to visit the USA for ages. I love classic airliners and now that I’m 44 and my 3 kids have grown up, I have missed the chance to experience a trip in one.
Wow just pure heaven the sound of those old Pratt & Whitney engines are so soothing and classic and had been working for almost 30 year at the time. You dont hear those sounds again, its sad as this flight is the return flight outbound flight to JFK in conjunction with FLT 800. Nearly a year 4 days to the date of that awful night..Its bittersweet
Thanks for bringing back memories of my school trip to Spain in 1994, on TWA. I flew TWA flights 904 (JFK-MAD) and 903 (MAD-JFK), both 747-131s (my first 747s ever). I was 19, just about to graduate high school, and someone at the school paid my way as my grad present. I still remember the whole trip like it happened yesterday. I also remember the TWA Flight Center terminal at JFK, how could I ever forget it?
And I still have the TWA tickets and other travel documents from that trip. It was run by EF Tours, an agency that runs school trips both domestic and international, allowing students the opportunity to see the world, literally, as part of their education.
Hi Vincent, THANK YOU for this video; I was 20 in 1985, my Father had been employed with TWA for nearly 30 years as Flight Dispatcher and retired in the late '70s; as his son, I had a magic TWA plastic card, a Company pass, bearing my name and the even more magical 7R classification; as such I was able to fly free (but SA - Space Available) on the whole network! In 1985, I would go to the airport (Fiumicino, FCO) by BUS (!!!) and then wait patiently for a seat to be available; as the plane was the majestic 747, a seat would always be available :-) ; I'd fly to JFK, then go to NYC somehow (a mix of bus + subway) and usually end up in Manhattan; I'd stay there for a few hours, sightseeing (or buying the latest electronic gadget 🙂), then back to the airport to catch a flight (any fight) to Europe; may be AMS, may be BRU, or MAD .... it was an experience SO thrilling, that of being able to just pick a city in Europe and then say "Today I'm going there !"; So, I boarded the TW841 FCO-JFK Flight so many times, that I lost count. But I kept all the boarding passes........ THANK YOU VINCENT, for this video, I didn't have a camera with me in 1985 (and video tape recording would have been prohibitively expensive for the normal person back then) so, I can relive those moments once again, today, almost 40 years later. THANK YOU !!!!
+David Gravemaker I know. I can't image riding on the Concorde. Must have been quite the flight. Wonder if an SST will ever come back to the airline world?
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I really do miss TWA. The L-1011 at the end retired just a few months after this video was taken and shortly after that the 747 was retired too. Those were some great airplanes!
Great video. My wife and I flew JFK-FCO return in February 1998 on a TWA 767-200 in "Trans World One." Great flights but wish it could have been on the classic "741."
+RJ Mac Since we were flying standby, we were almost bumped to a 767-200....but thankfully got seats on the 741. How was the 767-200? Still a great aircraft.
In ‘86 I was a new hire Flight Engineer at TWA. I met a Captain who was a First Officer on the inaugural 747 flight Rome to JFK. Big party, lots of press, many by the fence near the runways end. Hot and heavily loaded the jet ( we called her the Whale) used every bit of runway. He recalled all these people scattering away as they lifted off. Great story but: 25 or so years later I was having dinner with my son in law’s Italian aunt. Without knowing my background she told me how she was on the inaugural TWA 747 flight Rome to JFK. Told me of the party and fanfare. I asked: Was it hot that day? Oh Yes! Did the 747 take a long time to lift off? We didn’t think it was ever going to!
WHAT A MEMORABLE TREAT! TWA and Concorde and seeing the beautiful TWA terminal again. I thought it was an error in stating the 747 as a 100 series as one would be hard-pressed in finding one flying anymore. Thanks for the vid!
+Peter Mendoza Thanks for the comment. This sure was a 100 series. They weren't flying too much longer after this video was taken. And we almost got bumped to a 767-200 on the way home and missed riding this baby.
Spending my summers in Rome (Ostia) throughout the 90s I distinctly remember TWA 747s taking off and making that Left right over the beach at around 10am... TWA841 iirc. There was a Pan Am one that left within an hour of the TWA Pan AM 111, both bound for JFK.
Amazing footage - thank you for posting this. Crazy to think that 800 happened a year before, same aircraft. That plane was an absolute beast. Glad to see the L-1011 still in service - it must have been retired months or even weeks after this - I think all were gone by the middle/end of ‘97. And the Concorde. Ugh! Take me back. ❤️
My first flight ever was on TWA on an L1011 from LGA to PBI in 1988....My first international flight was in 1994 on TWA 800 JFK-CDG on the 747-131. Ive been able to get inside the shuttered TWA Flight Center a few times over the past several years...its an amazing building thats literally frozen in time!
+Vincent Vuoto I have the stubs for both legs (843/800) and the TWA ticket holder it came in with the Sprint application still intact. also have NY receipt stub though it's from a third party broker.
I took this flight back to New York after a opera contract. It was great, the stewards were so nice. I remember we hit an air pocket and a Stewardess named Eileen was coming down the isle carrying trays of little cake squares. They jumped off the cart onto the floor, and I sprang into action to help her get them up. She said in a loud and firm voice " I'll get it...I'll get it. Bless you Eileen, where ever you are...I hope you are well retired by now. Luckily you were not on flight 800 that was mistakenly shot down on its way to Paris.
The 747series even the 747-100's were great to fly on.Roomy, very unclaustrophobic, comfortable. And the lovely humming whine of those pratt and whitney engines on take off was unmistakable.Another era.!.
I enjoyed this same view many times when flying on Pan Am's Clipper Class. Too bad I didn't have a camera then that worth a darn. All I had was a crappy Kodak Disc Camera.
Great memories. I took the very same flight JFK/FCO Leonardo da Vinci and back. Wonderful memories. It was the early or mid 90s, I believe. Thanks for sharing.
I sure do miss That Wonderful Airline! I was fortunate to fly may times as a kid in 1970s and 80s on TWA PHX/JFK/CDG on both L1011s and 747 I remember the super friendly flight crews and just how well we as passengers felt taken care of from check in to picking up bags in baggage claim man things have really changed.
I got to fly on a couple 100s and 200s during a trip to Bangkok back in the 90s. Those airplanes were living and breathing in a way that’s tough to describe…
Oh the 747-100 and TWA. In June of 1996 my family and I flew TWA1 and TWA2 to Honolulu and back. I can still hear those Pratt’s screaming down the runway. A few weeks later, 800 happened and I’ve always been horrified if any of the crew on my flights were on 800.
Most likely none of the crew members on your flights TW1/2 were on flight 800. Both crews on TW800 (the actual on duty crew and the dead-head crew to Rome) were JFK based. The STL-HNL-STL roundtrip was staffed by STL crews. Of course one can never be 100% sure, as the more junior FAs on TW800 were no line holders and could have possibly be called to pick up a trip out of STL out of reserve but chances are relatively slim.
Ohhh the memories of flying to Italia with my family on TWA always, out of atl on the MD80 and then the mighty 747 into Rome, and then they retired the 747 and used the horrible 767-200 which I hated, but my father insisted we fly Tdub as he called it, we only flew TWA. Those were the days.
Too bad the plane didn't land from the other side cause I wouldve loved to have seen the Twin Towers of the World Train Center. :-( And if I might add....BOOOOOOO!!!!Nassau Coliseum at 11:45!! Let's Go Rangers!!!!
Yes, I was a little nervous. Not on this flight but on the outbound flight from JFK to Rome, which was also on the 747-100. We took an evening flight out of JFK, departing at 8:30PM. It was a hot summer day, just like July 17, 1996, when 800 crashed. And we took the same flight path as 800, as many of the trans-atlantic flights do, passing south of Long Island. I just kept thinking, what if this happens again but with my family onboard. Once we got to cruise altitude, I was able to calm down and the rest of the flight was great. RIP to the victims of TWA 800. Thanks for the comment!
I worked at TWA back in 1959 when the B-707 was tops. My pal, Larry Cosgrove flew for TWA and retired in about 1996. I lost contact with Larry and was saddened to learn he passed away in 2000.. We both learned to fly at Zahns Airport back in the day. I wonder if Larry ever married?
As you flew over Long Island on final I spotted what I thought was Nassau Coliseum and I was right! I used to watch aircraft on final 1962 - 1972 from Hicksville!
Did y’all have any entertainment in the flight like small tv screens on top of the seat where you can watch movies. I know these days a lot of flights have that especially American Airlines.
No, they had no TVs in the seats. Just a big monitor at the front of each section of the plane so everyone could watch whatever movie they were showing.
Wow you can clearly hear the sound of a guy winding up and shooting a disposable camera. That sure brings ya back... I bet the camcorder the guy filmed this on was the size of a brick haha.
+Dietrich Louw I believe there are still a bunch of 100's and 200's flying outside of the US. About a month ago, I saw a Kalitta Air 747-200 depart from JFK. Sounded wonderful.
The 90's was the last great decade for aviation and music. Everything blended so perfectly
Very true. Now everything is garbage. And i mean everything. Life really sucks now
Amen!
I agree!
Not for TWA 800..
That was after the flight 800 crash 💥
Wonderful piece of history captured here! Please don’t ever delete this video. 😊
I definitely won't delete it. Thank you!

15:52. that landing deserved a standing ovation! Smooth as silk!!
THIS IS THE REAL PLANE 747 forever the queen
wow this was amazing, concorde, jumbo, and tristar all in one video and the reverse thrust was rumbling, I love hearing those 4 engines belch
+Z Reshad Yeah, the Concorde was amazing! I believe the L1011's were retired only a few months after this video was taken.
My dad said that he used to board one of these TWA 747-100's back in those times. And he sat on the upper deck.
Hector Zambrano how nice 👍
That must have been great. I went up there to see the cockpit before the flight (They allowed that back then) and got a view of the upper deck.
Flew on a TWA 747-100 JFK-CDG-MUC nine years prior and possibly on this plane! Very cool!
Wow just pure heaven the sound of those old Pratt & Whitney engines are so soothing and classic and had been working for almost 30 year at the time. Sounds fabulous that first 747 I flew on was Transamerica, then TWA twice yo USA
This video is epic! Especially at the end when the British airways Concorde flight takes off. Holy smokes that thing was fast!

These JT9Ds almost make me want to cry. I love the sound so much
Beautiful video! Thanks for share!
+Andrea Ballini Federico Thank you. Glad you enjoyed :)
I would've loved to have had the opportunity to fly TWA
Johnson Waite I did from JFK to Copenhagen via Amsterdam round trip on a Boeing 747. I loved it!!
tooo late twa got bankrupt in 2001
@Jess W I must have missed that

That's so tragic. They said something about air conditioning
it wasn't shot down? it was a fault in the air conditioning wiring
@@lamegaming9835It was accidentally shot down by the US Navy during a training exercise.
It's great to see a twa flight
Love the sound of the Pratts JT9D,excellent video!!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing this blast from the past..........
Great video! Thank you for posting! I worked for TWA for 17 years at the LAX Reservation Center. I miss those days!
Was it outsourced or owned by twa?
I heard that TWA also used PRISON labor to book some of their flights. I think some prison in Kansas or somewhere.
The 747series even the 747-100's were great to fly on.Roomy, very unclaustrophobic, comfortable. And the lovely humming whine of those pratt and whitney engines on take off was unmistakable.Another era.!.

I'm watching this video 'cause I miss traveling so bad!!
No HD back in those days, but great video!
Well, this video is quite HD for a video from 1997...
Why do Americans criticize when other passengers clap upon landing ? I love that Italians clap 👏 upon landing.
Americans are just too lazy to clap.
Wow that was a long ass take off roll
Those JT9D sound amazing!!!!

Yes, a 747-100.

+Ray Hansen Wow, amazing history. Zahns was very close to Republic, right?
Did you ever meet Arthur Cox? He was my father. He joined the Constellation fleet in '64 after leaving the RCAF.
I wonder what the meal service was in TWA...
the lockheed tristar?
As you flew over Long Island on final I spotted what I thought was Nassau Coliseum and I was right! I used to watch aircraft on final 1962 - 1972 from Hicksville!
Republic was just across the Southern State Parkway to the North. Zahn's is gone but Republic Field is still there I think,
Damn I miss the sound of those engines

Reminds me of TWA flight-800, the accident happened around new york.
Yes, it reminds me of that too. This was the same type of aircraft and one year after flight 800.
Sound of a disposable camera taking pictures starting at 2:08

That's the same ticking time bomb that operated for TWA 800.
This video was set a year after the incident.
year 2000
unfortunately no meals service shown and beverages
That's because he focused on the flight not the food, Einstein.
I was born in the wrong generation, I guess. (2002)
747-200 that
oh the old whale; great airplane to fly; easiest of any to land, a real Cadillac
sorry 1990
American Airlines is going out of biz by January 2024!
Good! They’re terrible.
