Very frustrating that the video does not make it clear that this checkbox is currently only available to Excel BETA users. Like many others, I had to search the comments to find out why it is not visible on my ribbon.

Thank you, I was going mad trying to find it. There is a way to add it by adding the "Developer" tab under Ribbon Customization.
@@fartboobs I signed up for the Microsoft 365 Insider after I posted above (1 month ago) expecting to see the Checkbox appear in my menu. Frustratingly, it still does not! The Checkbox that appears under the Developer menu (Form Controls) is a different Checkbox altogether.

I found out that this feature is only available for BETA users on the Insiders list. I can't wait until it's available for all MS 365 Excel users

It's only in the BETA release as of February 2024, and when you have any other user without BETA release open the file, the checkboxes say 'true' or 'false'. I know it is exciting to see new features, but this should remain as a 'coming soon' video. I suspect that will 'date' the video and will mean it needs to be uploaded once the feature goes live. It's been in the BETA for months, and we have no idea if it will be released in Feb, March, or even this half of the year. I have waited 12 months for some BETA features to be released in other Microsoft products. Please clearly label this as a Pre Release feature to stop confusing users.
Where has this check mark been all my life? I really could have used it back when was working at my job!!! Now I'm retired. I still try to use it now working with excel sheets at home. Thanks for video!!!

This still only available on the Insider (beta) builds, not the O365 release channel. Many YT are failing to mention that for some reason.

I may have checked this video late but really brilliant and helpful.
This is cool! Checkboxes have been available in Excel but it was a tedious job to get them related to the correct cell. As an Active-x element.
Copying a box would result in multiple boxes that would be related to the same *true/false* cell. To correct this you would have to manually change the related cell for every single box.
I hated using the checkbox option as an active X element so I found a work around. Used wingdings font and inserted check mark symbol into my column reserved for checkboxes, then changed the font to white. Used a very simple VBA code to change the font to black when I right clicked and back to white (invisible) on another right click. You can also do it on a double click. Can’t wait for this new feature to become available though!

My ability to add a Checkbox is not under Insert, rather it is in Developer. While it works somewhat the way you explain, not all of functions appear to work; for example, when you changed the color of the box itself or justified it right and left within the cell; all of these options are greyed-out. Also, the Countif doesn't work the way you showed. I'll continue to play around with it, but if the changeover to Developer has modified the ability of the functions, perhaps you could do another video showing these changes. Regardless, great information and it gives us somewhere to start looking by having a basic understanding. Thanks much for the video!!

Nov 18 2023: Neither this checkbox feature nor the "Cell Controls" group appear in my insert menu. I updated my MS Excel 365 company account one hour ago, no luck. Rebooted, no luck. How do we get MS to treat us all the same so we get this feature?

@@KevinStratvert Now, if I could only master automated data importation from a published website (like stock quotes) into my Excel spreadsheet. I did it a couple of times but can't seem to recreate it....old age kicking in.
Great Video, wish there was a way to turn an excel sheet into an app. Viewing on a phone is okay, but there has to be a cleaner way to make it into an app for dynamic calculations

Thank you. Is there a way to add two checkboxes to one cell? For example if it is a YES or No situation.
By default... that is what a checkbox is. TRUE or FALSE, or... Yes or No. If you used two to indicate yes or no.... and someone checks one of the boxes... it would always be "TRUE" no matter what they picked.

Is it only Office (Excel) 365 that offers the new checkbox feature? I cannot find it in the newest update of Office Home and Student.
It is only avaliable to MS 365 Windows Users & people with beta channel on MS 365.
Office Home and Student is a 1 time subscription.
The Checkbox is now located under the Developer Tab > Insert/toolbox icon > Checkbox.

It's only in beta testing right now, not everyone has it. I don't see it in my Excel files either.
If you add developer to your ribbon and select insert in the developer it has a checkbox option

Kevin, great information as always. Have an interesting question for you. If I'm doing a money spread sheet for financial home use, once I'm done doing the first draft, and then go back in a month later and change a bunch of the money entries, could someone go into that spreadsheet and find what the first entries were deleted? Once it's written over it's gone for good?
Does anyone know what version of excel he is using? I don't have that feature in MS 365 in the Insert ribbon. Or is this a customization Ribbon that needs to be turned on? All the Check Box Options in the "Customize Ribbon" Menu are "Check Box ActiveX Control" and "Check Box Form Control" in the developer ribbon which only allows me to draw in a Check Box and have less functionality that the one demonstrated in the video.
I also am using M365/O365 and do not have this feature. My guess is that there is something related to the different products offered in this space (or at least that's been my experience in the past with things like this).

Hi Kevin. I am designing a double elimination bracket sheet in excel. I am trying to use a check box function to advance the winner into the next bracket. Out of two possible choices, only one of the two advances to the next bracket (cell). Is there a way for two separate check boxes to control the results of the same cell? If so, what is the procedure?

So this feature is currently only available to Beta Channel users running Version 2310 (Build 196924.2000) or later.
Unfortunately, the insider program is only for the ms365 subscription. I have the full 2021 one-time paid version.

Office 2021 doesen't have Insider. Only MS 365 has Insider.
