  • Remembrance and Renewal. Part 2 of 3. May 24, 2009.
Speach by Jeanne Burgess, Past President, Carlington Community Association, Ottawa.
Carlington is a community in the City of Ottawa, Canada. Its boundaries are: -Fisher Avenue on the East; -The Experimental Farm on the South; -Carling Avenue on the North and; -Clyde Avenue on the West. There are approximately 400 World War Two veterans homes in Carlington. Many streets such as Viscount, Tunis, Veteran, Crerar, Marshall and General bear names that reflect this wartime heritage. These videos summarize the events of that day which were to commemorate the sacrifice Canada's Veterans have made to our country as well as the 65 anniversary of the building of the veterans homes in our community. The event also looked forward as well as backward. CMHC (Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation) made a presentation on the Now House project at the May 24 Event. The Now House is an initiative of CMHC to retrofit many of the older homes in Canada such as Veterans Homes to be suitable for 21st century living conditions. Carlington wants to have its the Veterans homes designated as Heritage status or at the very least, to have the current residential zoning for area maintained. The Carlington Community would also like to erect a small war memorial perhaps at the location of Carling Avenue and Merivale Roads. This war memorial would replace a war memorial that once stood on the top of Memorial Heights (now known as the Carlington Reservoir). The website of the Carlington Community Association is www.carlingtoncommunity.org
