  • I was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. We were on our way home when something odd was happening. This group was doing a Flash Mob - like Haka at Sylvia Park.

The haka we performed was written by Ngapo Wehi over 10 years ago. His son Tapeta Wehi taught us it while we were in training for the Opening Ceremony of the Rugby World Cup. After our first week of training we had a free day to do what we wanted. This is what the 50 of us come up with ;)

i agree i am a white kid from Massachusetts usa and i know two, soon to be three hakas. i did the research and i preform them with respect. as i preform a haka, i keep in my mind that i do not in any way own it. i love the ferocity and intensity of the hakas and the maori as a whole i respect all and thank all for what they have given the world.

      Tiltawurl272 KA MATE! KA MATE!
It is death! It is death!
      We were at war
      KA ORA! KA ORA!
It is life! It is life!
      But now there is peace.
      KA MATE! KA MATE!
We're going to die! We're going to die!
We thought we were all going to die
      KA ORA! KA ORA!
We're going to live! We're going to live!
      but now we are safe
      TENEI TE TANGATA PU-HURU-HURU
This is the man, so hairy
because our leader, so strong and masculine,
NANA NEI I TIKI MAI, WHAKAWHITI TE RA!
who fetched, and made shine the sun!
has unified us and brought back the sunny days of peace!
      UPANE! KA UPANE!
      Together! Keep together!
We are all working in harmony, side by side,
      HUPANE! KAUPANE!
Up the step! A second step!
      making steady progress
      WHITI TE RA! HI!
      Out comes the sun! Ahh!
to prolong these sunny days of peace.

I love this, and also wonder what traditional warriors would think upon seeing this.
I can't help but thrust my hands in the air and cheer at the end, even though I am neither a native nor a soccer fan. It's so visceral I love it. I hope that's not bad.

I'm glad that we still have some warrior chants still preserved and passed down through generations. It's sad that so many warrior chants have been erased in time from so many great warrior cultures. Thank you Maori Warriors for keeping the tradition alive so the chant can energize the warrior within us all no matter where you live or what culture you are from. Best regards from here in America, long live the Haka.

that people love to see it, get an adrenaline rush from it, and try to perform it, is NOT a way to disrespect a native culture! it's a way that we DO respect the dances, songs, language, warcance or whatsoever. it will more tell you that we are jealous about the fact we don't have something like Haka. so be proud, not angry that people try to perform it...

@Dafeaz i just wanted to say that the guys doing this haka were professional, they are Maori which is awesome, but you can tell that each and everyone of those guys was feeling that IHI, WEHI AND MANA, the way they freestyle and have there own unique moves in the haka, showcases what a haka can look like and make a spectator feel like.
