Hes not even close to the best bassist of all time, thats objectively speaking, but that doesnt mean he isnt great and doesn't have unique and solid elite level skill though which he for sure does.
I finally got to speak with John Myung tonight at our kids' National Honor Society's induction. Not a warm or personable guy at all. The conversation got funky when I started talking about Dream Theater from a drummer's perspective, which evolved into a conversation about M. Portnoy.
Lt. Frank Drebin Depends on the conversation. I play the cello, so being constricted to a bass part I shouldn’t have to be in in modern compositions seems commonplace with a normal instrument; I mean seriously, John Petrucci’s guitar is tuned lower than the cello’s mild C string. I’d always love to try playing the bass, I’ve got the big hands to do it. When it comes down to it, it’s not that he’s not easy to get along with, it’s that he’s experienced and generally is used to hearing stuff about his own band. Perhaps you took him into a personal level when you brought up the drums and Portnoy.
@@jacobjohnson2603 its not like dance of eternity is very similar to metropolis lmao. youre acting like the part they transitioned from was similar to the original, it wasnt
John is SUCH a good bass player but I often lose him in the mix...I get that dynamics in a band like dream theater with a keyboard are different than Rush, but I wish John's tone cut through the mix a little more like Geddy's and I could listen to him throughout every song.
John Myung, Dream Theater's secret weapon they don't even know about. I really wish he could be heard a little more in the mix of their stuff. I know he can't have such a big presence as say Geddy Lee or Chris Wolstenholme, but let me hear him. And I get that you don't want too much bass, but Yes has a very similar lineup to that of Dream Theater and you can hear Chris Squire fine. John is still a legend, just wish he was more audible than he is.
I am speechless.........I watched the drummer auditions and that was awesome.......but seriously....who could replace this guy?.....or the guitar player ...or the keyboards.....I am a new fan of Dream Theater........BIGTIME......
Everyone knows how good Petrucci is. And although Rudess could have been a concert pianist, good luck finding anyone to cover any of the three keyboardists' parts. And when you try to find a drummer of Portnoy's (or Mangini's) calibre, you're in trouble. But John Myung is just unique.
I Think this is a matter of ear training, after some time of playing and listening to bass lines and solos, you can hear the Low voices better in the music
What i love from John Myung is: no one ever compare him with other bassist. Like there are so many people compare John Petrucci with Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, or Steve Vai. Mike Mangini with Mike Portnoy. Jordan Rudess with Kevin Moore or Derek Shrenian. And James Labrie with other vocalists
@@MrVideoCreative Style Billy : bump all note with fuckin technique Myung : keep the Bass line and know his portions in song But Billy and John myung is my favorite Bass players
Sad to see that watching these extremely gifted musicians evokes stupid arguments about how good John really is, even adding vampires (wtf!) to the 'discussion' and how people have the urge to resort to meaningless name calling. All I can say is that these guys are the most gifted musicians I have ever seen or heard. But music isn't all about virtuosity. Simply compare Mozart to Paganini, or David Gilmour to John Petrucci, or Tal Wilkenfeld to John Myung. I have been playing guitar and bass for over 45 years now but I will never ever reach this level of perfection. Anyway, my deepest respect to these hard working geniuses.
I see his fingers moving but I haven't heard a note he's played! How does anyone know how good this guy is if you can't hear him! Are there any videos of him playing without all the treble turned up to 11? Geez!
it's very hard , but not as hard as you think , that's a two hands octave tapping riff , left start at fret no.2 , than do a octave , same to right hand but start on fret no.9 , than tap 9 again , than tab 4 on d string than double tab a's 9 than e's 9 than repeat.
É impressão minha, mas segundos antes do taping, deu a intender que ele tava sumilando a base, porque ele parou antes, porém a imagem continuou normalmente 👀
This video is at least eight years old because Portnoy is still in the band. I spoke with John Myung a few nights ago and he looks remarkably older than you see in this vid.
John myung is a vampire, I swear his appearance never changes while the other members change so much

yes, john is a vamp. this is a secret.
When John Myung met the devil at the crossroads to become the greatest bassist of all time, he sold his voice instead of his soul.
Hes not even close to the best bassist of all time, thats objectively speaking, but that doesnt mean he isnt great and doesn't have unique and solid elite level skill though which he for sure does.
Fact: Myung is better composser and bass player than Geddy Lee.
