It's normal in anything to be paid more for having 13 years of experience because of increase skill over that time. Unions a low average salary, so unskilled employees make more and skilled employees make less than the average.

Walmart does the same thing. Back in 2004 we got a new store manager and within one month he fired everybody that had been with the company for 10 years or longer. People that were making between 15 and 20 bucks an hour which was good money back were terminated for that reason alone. And once they were all fired within a couple weeks he hired a bunch of new people for like 9 bucks an hour.

This is 2023, not 1963 and we compete in a world market. Look around your house or office, can you find anything made in the USA? I was UAW in my youth and I just told you why I and several thousand others lost high-paying jobs in York PA over 30 years ago. Eventually, unions collectively bargain their jobs away. Hello? I just wasted 2 minutes, didn't I?

    • @CptObviousKyle
      @CptObviousKyle Год назад +2

@@1Skeptik1 nah I see this. UAW isn't perfect by a long shot, but I've personally seen wages increase by well over 50% in one year (plus several other added benefits) because of them. And you're right, unions make products more expensive. But, if we don't go with Unions, companies will screw you everyday to Sunday. Companies used to have 2 options on what to do with money they made. Reinvest, or increase wages. Now they can do stock buybacks, meaning they can lower their stock price to dirt, then buy up all the shares. No need to raise wages anymore.

I was in the teamsters for 30 yrs. I'm not getting a big pension but it's way better than nothing. I was in a safer work environment than non-union all that time. The pension was part of my pay. The union gave job protection, seniority rights, good medical, all that. They (company or union) don't owe me a thing because I even liked my job. But I always thought they should offer training. In skilled trade unions there's apprentice, journeyman, master levels of accomplishment with pay commensurate. And a do it right the first time attitude that benefits everyone. Non union pay is generally about 75% of union pay not counting benefits. Which would you rather do knowing your gonna stay in that job? Unions are better for the working man period.

You should be able to focus on what you want instead of having to work a job to afford your survival. The wealthy have been screwing people over on pay for a generation and now people are okay with embracing the longer working hours for lower pay. Its this terrible "grind" mentality that has been shoved down the children of the workers throats just so the owners can keep the lumpsome they have accumulated through decades of exploitation of their fellow man.

I know non union guys that have worked trades with the same family run shop for years and they are treated well and paid great. Of course there are shops that are run by greedy people, hey, no chains on your butt, quit and go to someone who will treat you right. Some guys love the union and the union's training is awesome. I just don't like the feeling of being 'owned' and the threat of them cutting off my retirement if I do something they don't like. I have seen some ugly stuff come from it. Then I got fucked over when trying to get unemployment.
That said, Unions are BS too. I know a guy who hurt his back,. An old woman bumped into a huge roll of carpet, he pushed the carpet out of her way to save her and hurt his back. The union argued he shouldn't have tried to save her, so it was his own fault and he got screwed.

I think unions can be good, depending on the company and field of work. There still are some non-union companies that pay as well with benefits. While pensions are good to have, some still could run into difficulties paying the members due to corruption or mismanagement of funds. This has happened occasionally in the past, just ask some teachers. I was under a union years ago, they didn't do anything for us while I was a member for 10 years, so not all unions have benefitted their members. I'm not bashing unions as a whole, but don't be mis-led by a 3 minute video.

Thing about unions, when you join as an apprentice, your not even allowed to complain and you have to go where they tell you, even if it's 70 plus miles away from your home and you have to work, even if it's costing you your paycheck just to stay where you are working, and they don't ever explain shit to you, unless you specifically ask, not only that but the dues are a very large chunk of your paycheck. and if your new to working and don't know what your doing, well then your real screwed. Cuz if you don't pick up the trade real quick, you'll find yourself out of the union only after a week or two after starting work. Worst still, if they send you somewhere where you have to wait around a lot like a nuclear plant as your first job. You ain't picking shit up quick and will quickly find yourself out of a job and out of the union. They fire people from unions just like people get fired from companies. Really, they are just overblown companies that simply rent their workers to other companies, pretending to be all worker friendly by mimicing the old guild structures. But are more similar to the companies which they seem to hate and "protect" their workers from. When in reality, they don't protect the workers, they protect themselves as an organization in the same way companies protect themselves. I saw a guy who was being constantly drug tested every day by a company, and did they union do anything. Nope.

If you are a union member you owe it to yourself and your family to learn your legal rights within a union. Study and know your union constitution and bylaws. Participate in your unions' affairs and do not let yourself be intimidated by union officials. Your local's LM2 annual financial report is available online that tells you what your union officials are making as compensation. You can sue your union for failure to represent you. And learn the truth about right to work, and non-right to work. You are NEVER legally required to join a union in either a right to work state or non-right to work state, to work for an employer. It is the biggest myth in employment in the United States. Good luck.

I see the mental health of workers is increasingly deteriorating due to many conditions. I see little effort but words with no practical solutions. I see workers feeling ostracized from their labour because they feel they are nothing but a replaceable cog in a machine.
I've become more involved in my union to try and bring awareness to the needs of modern workers. A democratic workplace would be most ideal, but that is not achievable with the current ruling class holding the reigns of power. By becoming more involved, I hope to be able to empower my fellow worker and help us regain some dignity, pride, and connection to our labour.

    • @LootHunt

As a unskilled new worker, a union job will pay you more because the union keeps the pay of older, high skill workers pay lower than normal. A negative or positive depending on how you look at it is your work will be judged by how a managers "feels' about you, regardless of you productivity or other employees satisfaction with you. It benefits a union employee manager that his employees all hate each other so they aren't focused on him, so the manager will lie about you to other employees so you fight each other. Union employee managers are made up of the employees that where most hated. Unions are a great system for Karens.

How do you calculate "worth"? Why are some things "worth" more than others? All in all, DEMAND is what factors in worth. And how is "demand" calculated? By how much of the product is available, and how many people want it. If a group of people decide to pool their money together to buy a tour bus, then that's their business, as long as long as that transaction is voluntary. Likewise, if a group of private sector labor workers decide to unionize, then they too have the right to do so, as long as those interactions are voluntary.
But ofcourse, corporatist cons "like progs" hate voluntary transactions...

requirements to give you breaks, lunches, vacation, sick leave, pensions, or 40

a union contract. You can be a nonunion employee of 25 years with a nonunion
company with a perfect record but due to your age you have begun to slow down a
bit, without warning and under current labor laws the company fires you siting
poor performance, what recourse do you have? The answer is NONE. At least with

Worked 40 + hours around 5 to 10 hours over time , of course I was getting paid half time after 8 hours and after 10 hours double. Had full coverage insurance by the company, over 450 employees . Now after I went Union , was paying my union dues of $85 a month . Now union salary at $47/hour as a journeyman carpenter making $1,950 per week 40 hours no over time . I’d get left with $1,250/$1,300 after . From almost making $2k per week goes down to $1,250 . Now where in the fuck does those $650+ dollars go to !?! The union is just a greedy ass mafia group . I have way much more money in my bank now than when I was union . And I still have my 15min brake at 10 am and my 30+ minutes at lunch and my last brake at 2 pm . The union was way more over kill . Never been laid off from work not once . Only when it rains of course . We even get paid higher wages when the company sends us to work on certified jobs like union .

      Junior Gonzalez
Junior Gonzalez every perk you just mentioned only came to fruition because of unions.
1.Your wage...is piggy backing off of the Davis-Bacon Act which only happened because of organized labor (unions).
      2. Your breaks... unions
Its ironic...You're taking a snapshot in time and talking about all of these perks that are better. When in actuality the people who pay you want to pit union and nonunion against each-other, Break it all apart, and then take a giant crap on the bacon davis act so they can ship people from all over the world to do your work for $15hr. Not $35. Your wage it not possible without unions. Its a regional perk because of the unions you slander
Take a look at the big picture before you make foolish statements. Its chess not checkers...and the working man union or nonunion is screwed if they don't organize.

Junior Gonzalez do you actually think you would be getting all that if your company wasn’t competing with the union?
Wether you work union or non union the wages/benefits and safety is set by the union.
Worked non union as a machinist for $20 an hour with minimal benefits/pension and no job security. Joined Millwright union, served apprenticeship and now make over $40 an hour with gold plan benefits and pension, double time after 8 hours and weekends.
Do the math and you’ll see why I’m a proud Union worker who doesn’t complain about paying dues.

The cons of unions are reasonable but non unions tend to be more exploitative and unpredictable.
While unions are more simple and lay offs are a thing and depending on the industry they may be pretty bad.

Unions are great to protect workers from injustice but shouldn’t be exploited to protect the lazy. I have a strong work ethic and love my job but I hate the equality across the board; socialism In a nutshell. If I could, I’d fire three quarters of the people I work with due to incompetence/attitude/laziness. I refuse to take on the union attitude.

*Unions is the design for protecting a lazy workers at the expense of productive workers. Productive workers get better offers and leave unions.*

arnan540 So you’d rather take money out of your own check and put towards your pension rather than, have money put to your pension along with your check? Yeah, you enjoy that buddy. I’ll go hit the road and get $11 put towards my retirement along with the $44.68 I’ll make an hour.

Union, and non union have layoffs.. differance is non union your new job pays ?? Compared to the old one?, Your health care starts over, your 401k plan changes and doesnt follow seamlessly vs being in the union. your wages are set so your lifestyle doesnt change, your medical is intact , your 401k and PENSIONS are uniterupted. Plus in union you get free schooling from apprentices to journeyman to learn new skills all free at the hall.. non union cannot offer near a union package..

When I was young, you had to have daddy to get you in to the union. I never found a way and I did just fine in life. Matter of fact, I make about double what a union man does. When you have to be worth the money, you become far more skilled.

This is how ignorant Democrat Union people really think. Notice how shallow their reasoning truly is. It's easy to look around at the people actually working and add up the wages and benefits that they have. What's not so easy is to look across the landscape of a community, or country and figure out how many people are left without a job because of the artificially high wages. I have watched this over the last 30+ years as a UAW member. Every contract we got raises, more stringent work rules, more classifications, better healthcare, except of maybe one or two. After every contract another plant would close down sending thousands into the unemployment lines. Tens of thousands if you look at all the second tier jobs that were lost along the way. But yet the Union, with all honesty could still say that Unions workers that were working make more than non union workers. Ford UAW membership was cut in half during my 30+ years. That's half people!! Tens of thousands of Union members that are no longer. So in reality I should take my wage and divide by two to show you the real numbers. Oh sure I'm making good money. But my fellow union brother who lost his job is making ZERO money. So 30 bucks an hour dwindles down to 15 just like that. I always found it funny I would get a 3% raise and the Union would agree to a 6% speed up of the line. Crazy!!
I've notice in a few of the comments below mentioning the Davis Bacon act. The last thing I would do is bring up is that law. It has it's roots in racism and should be repealed immediately. I just love the way Union people can tax the holy dog crap out of a man making 15 bucks an hour so that he can make 50. No brains and no heart.

Democratic unions fault? What a moron dberg! Unions didn't push automakers out of the us, the illustrious government spear headed by the Republican'ts money machines sent jobs out of the country and sky rocketed cheap imports, that's what happened to the job here shit head. Ironic that someone enjoying the benefits of negotiated benefits and retirement could be so blind. You obviously never took time to understand how many Brothers and Sisters gave their lives for the organized labor movement at the hands of greedy, ruthless murders hired by the major employers. Please give your benefits and retirement to folks that will appreciate and use them. Feel free to leave this great working class country at any time, glad to pay your fare to Pakistan or Iraq you ungrateful wretch!

Union workers did get outbid by other countries in many sectors especially in the Auto industry. But mostly because big corporations were controlling the international trade agreements. I don't believe in these ham-fisted tariffs, but big corporations are basically running the country I mean without doubt anymore but I have seen union workers in my generation who were of color which helped them buy a home and get stability and send their kids to college. We don't need to take opposite positions on everything we just need to use it a finer tool when we are balancing trade and unions. For instance Uber drivers really don't want to unionize but unless they do they're not going to have any voice at all when it comes to replacing them with self-driving cars. Unions have a lot of political power so that corporations don't go buck-ass wild.
