Visited her a couple days ago. And climbed her rigging and along one of her yards. Incredible experience with Wire and Sky. It was a wonderful experience which I would recommend to everyone. V supportive staff. Cutty Sark is just awesome. Incredible history and I hope she will be around for at least another century for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for the video. 😁
@@GeorgeTaylor-hb9jp You can do it through the Museum of Greenwich. Its £52 for an adult. I would be terrified and holding on for dear life but there is a video on the museum website of people doing it.
Cutty Sark was built in Dumbarton on the River Clyde in Scotland to a design by Hercules Linton for the China tea trade. The name "Cutty Sark" is from the poem "Tam O'Shanter" by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. "Cutty Sark" is the witch in the short shirt (a cutty sark) who grabs hold of Tam's horse's tail as they flee across the bridge over the River Doon. The witch is unable to cross flowing water so is left on the other side of the bridge clutching the horse's tail. The figurehead of the ship depicts the witch holding the horse's tail.
I was lucky enough to visit her a couple years ago, right after the restauration, shes a beauty. I drink tea in my Cutty Sark crew mug copy everyday :-)
Wonderful video; thanks. I knew the Cutty Sark had a life well past her China tea clipper days, but I wasn't aware that it's hull was partly copper-clad and that there was so much iron in the hull bracing. I'm so glad they were able to restore it to its former glory.
Hi, I work for South Korean broadcast company tvN, we would like to use your video on our history show. Could you please let me know if we could use an excerpt from it giving the credit to your channel? Thanks!
Thanks a lot cause the video, you did a great job!! I m building the Airfix model Cutty sark from1975, its an great one no matter looks old, in 1:130 scale. Well you helped me a lot and I did enjoy it !!👌😉🌳🌳🐏🦅
Just a quick piece of information, during the time that Cutty Sark was built most Men were an average of 5' 3 inches tall and Women were 5' feet or slightly less, one of Jack The Rippers Victims was Nicknamed "Long Shanks Lizzy" for her height and she was 5' 3 Inches Tall, this was down to a poor diet, even Queen Victoria was Tiny compared to today's Women and although diet has improved and people have gotten taller we often don't realize how much smaller they were. Great Video of The Historical Clipper, Cutty Sark.
when she was built the crew accommodation was below deck up forward, to increase cargo capacity the dog boxes,(crews nickname) were put on the deck. If you look carefully you can still see where the portholes were for the crews quarters. cargo holds don't need portholes.
Hello, we are the staff of a Korean entertainment program. This is a program that tells history by traveling the country non-face-to-face at a time when you can't travel. I'm calling to get permission to use your RUclips video. Is it okay to use your video with the source in our program?
Hiya, this is what many people think but according to literature about this amazing ship, it’s incorrect. The majority of the ship’s fabric was removed before the fire as the year before a restoration project started. So fortunately, most of it was unharmed by the fire. Additionally, if you visit, you will see that the original parts are painted white. So you can distinguish the original framework. What had happened is some of the metal work has buckled under the intense heat. What is standing is def not a replica but a restoration. A testament to an incredible ship and a wonderful project of restoration which has really propelled this beauty into the new century.
I must go down to the seas again,
to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by....
Great video!

Hell they had more room in their racks then I did when I served on US Navy destroyers in the early 70's!

Named after the witch in the Robert Burns poem Tam O’Shanter.

Grand old ship. Love that she's still around, although will never sail again.
Great video , Great ship
Thanks

Yea, it is really cool getting to see it. Very nicely restored.

Glad it helped - I would love to see a picture of it when you are done. Cheers
I sailed on this ship in 1869 it was very choppy going on the sea to collect tea i was sea sick most of the time
My dad sailed on this ship and he said it really was very fast which made going up the rigging difficult most days. 😮

Good info... thanks.
That would explain why the ceiling was kind of low below deck

Ah cool. Good to know thanks. I learn something almost every day about this fascinating old ship.
I’m still building the model since 1979. Oh well!
I had no idea it was steel framed
Yea, that was pretty “high end “ tech for the day.
I have a replica of this ship right on my desk next to me

More of a reconstruction than a restoration.
Very little of the original hull remained after the fire

Был возле штурвала и даже не потрогал его!!?? Такой момент упустил....
I did… it just wasn’t in the video.
Stern of the ship, not rear
You can tell I wasn’t in the navy. Thanks for the correction.
The restoration is fantastic. The fake glass sea is a disgrace. A Michelangelo in a cheap $10 Walmart frame.
