The hardware is the same. The eq is the best I’ve ever used, it’s never harsh. If youre used to hearing other wonky eq boosts sometimes you look to see if it’s on…it’s that clean.
@@LennonStephens Don't have experience with the hardware. But the plugin is extremely good sounding. One of the very few that provide night and day difference while sounding very natural and musical.
Sometimes I wish I could upvote your videos twice. I watched this while working on one project and it was useful at the time. Now I'm doing something different, watched it again for a refresher, and now I have new ideas for this project. Thank you!
Bought it for holiday special 2 plug ins for 249. And this is the big game changer! Does exactly what the hardware does,I use it in unison and instantly sold my hardware. Buy it! Great review by the way brother
An old trick was to record vocals with a bass boost at 30hz with the hpf at 80hz, combined with a boost at 32k.. It really brings out throat sounds in the beginning of words (if that's your thing :) )
@@ArvidWamSolvang huh. i think some do though. like FF pro i can even see it you can even brickwall it. but do you mean if the slope is low enough it's not like a brickwall? thanks i love this concept. i use pultecs in this way in a similar way
I read that there's also a blackface version of the 737 that you get to by clicking on the UA symbol. I read a comment by a UA moderator who said the black one sounds better. Have you tried that out Mike? Thanks!
my dad actually has a real one and never uses it. he got it just to have one and literally never turns it on. and im working on my album right now and im commandering the fuck out of it.
Post production /Line. Way he uses plugins. Never heard him track vocals before. But I would think while tracking vocals with this in the unison slot it would be Mic. I think I don't own it yet but the hardware unit you set to mic while tracking through it.
Hey Michael White! You're plugin reviews genetically make up 67% of my brain haha! I'm looking forward to getting a UAD Interface In order to just run the plugins; and record separately somewhere else. Do you know if the Different Interfaces handle DSP Differently or something I should look out for? The UAD ARROW Thunderbolt 3 is around my $500 price range. Would this overall suffice? I'm planning on being a little heavy handed on mixing and mastering stemmed project sessions in Studio one. Thank you for your suggestions !
I would never use this plugin. LOL. With all due respect, I would instead use Waves Abbey Road Mastering plugin which serves me in my sessions as a track all in one EQ, compressor, ratio adjuster, sound flatener or expander, separate bass clean transparent adjuster and it even includes knobs for shine and more. It's like having Puig EQs, gate, compressor, and multi band compressing all in one. It is the epitome of a true professional plugin for a very cheap price. Check out tutorials on this plugin on RUclips so you'll understand my happiness.
I have never used this plug but I own and use the 1073 and Manley , the Manley has been my go too for a while now, it is amazing. I am looking forward to working with this one.
Man, they are all great. 1073 just sounds bright, clear, and solid. No frills. Classic sound. A great all arounder. The VoxBox has a de-esser and somehow has an older sound, gritty. Pultec EQ. Likes to be yelled into. A great rock preamp. A bit noisy for something softer like dialogue. For singing, it almost encourages you to sing with power. Great on male voices. Avalon, brilliant for the softer, smoother stuff. Excellent for dialogue. Eponymous on rap vocals.
I’m thinking the same. Would u say get the real deal and cut the crap or is this plug good enough? Please reply when u can cause I’m on the verge of pulling the trigger on the hardware any day now ! Lol
@@reggiedillard7731 that hardware is amazing. The plugin is great, especially for the price. It gets the Avalon thing. And while tracking it does something usually only hardware can do. You can monitor latency free, which means the vocalist can hear the preamp on their voice, and it sounds so good, it will coax a better performance just because the vocalist is enjoying hearing themself. For the price difference, it gets you impressively close. But in sound, you know, we can spend hundreds on gear to get pro work, and we spend thousands to get a ten percent boost to the overall quality that hundreds would have provided. Sometimes it is better to spend the thousands on a new mic, or a better room, of a mixing desk, and to save some money and just get the Avalon plugin. Sometimes it is better to spend thousands on an Avalon and use the old mic.
The eq quality in this plugin is insane. Brings clarity and definition like nothing else.

I just purchased mine for 179.99! Best valentine day present ever! HAHAAA Im so excited!
Congrats!
Most of these kinds of demos have overblown mix settings. Thanks for doing a demo with really nice sweet spot mixing!
thank you for your clear description without adding a bunch of filler words.Great Tutorial!
Great video. When you A/B'd the vocals bypassed I was sold.
Hey UAD, I demo'd but bought because of Michael White's demo - Great mix Mike; love that track too.

That is what I'm looking for for my vocals
great tip!
if you cut at 80 how does the 30 get through?
@@johnthecreative High pass filters doesn't cut out everything under the frequency you choose

Every artist feels like they don't belong in this world.
Indeed!
Thank you so much for you demonstration Mike. I am going to learn this Channel Strip a little bit better since it has become native now as well :)
Thanks for the video. That 32k boost on the vocals was a bit much for me though.
absolute best review and demonstration I've seen, thank you for this!
Your king at mixing and showing us how to use the plugins . Just bought and this helped me out a ton
Cheers!
Thank you ever so much for making this video!
I want to see watch review as soon as it came out!

How does this compare with the Manley Voxbox?
my dad actually has a real one and never uses it. he got it just to have one and literally never turns it on. and im working on my album right now and im commandering the fuck out of it.
worked well with the U87, I used it a ton in the early 2000's...
Yes, the U87 fit this unit like a glove. This was a classic combo for many studios that had this setup.
I have used that combo since 2000, and still have them :)
BTW: I still have the Purple knob edition vt-737, and like it better than the SP-version.
What frequency would you find to cut on vocals that tend to be a bit nasal like yours? Thanks for the awesome overview!
wow. Is a UAD interface device required to use the plugin if you buy it?
Yes, you either need a UA audio interface or a UA Thunderbolt or PCIe DSP card like I am using
How does this compare with the Kazrog? Would love to see you review the Kazrog too Mr Mike.
Good demo video of Avalon.
Amazing this plugin, very similar to the hardware!
For Vocals should we put the Input set to LINE or MIC setting? Thanks!

Noticing that hi end hiss in this video. Thought I was alone with this phenomena.
X-Noise plug-in on the master bus, make friends with it.
They're getting good with software, but I'll stick to hardware for tracking. The best plugin are hardware machines that plug in.
Alot of engineers had mixed feelings about the hardware unit
I think they were mostly the ones who were used to working with the individual Avalon components.
@@mixingwithmike I can't help but think he was making a pun with his comment.
@@mixingwithmike I heard the compressor on the Avalon hardware sucks.
Do you think it a night and day difference on vocal is it worth the money if I’m on a budget
are there any alternatives similar plugins?
The best software emulation of Avalon vt737 eq and compressor is in the old Focusrite Liquid Mix.
How do you bypass the Apollo’s preamp using the 737 only while tracking vocals?
Thanx buddy

I have not tried that. Not sure how to do a fair comparison to see if that's true.

Not for a long time...

Good but I am not impressed with this plugin !
It’s actually pretty good
It's really really good. I have the hardware, and was SO surprised by it. You really get the full experience running it in unison.
Your Mom is not impressed with you.
I hope people don't think this is a "front end" of a daw before converter.... It's a plugin.
Andrew J Castaneda But it is When u use with the unison on the Apollo. Its the preamp Then.
