I watched my sister sing this to her baby when he was born 40 years ago, and she always said that this wasnt just a love song, but a song to a newborn. Beautiful
Roberta Flack has such a beautiful voice. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was used in the 1971 Clint Eastwood film "Play Misty For Me". Roberta had a lot of great hits in the 70's such as "Killing Me Softly With His Song", "Feel Like Makin' Love" & some great duets with Donny Hathaway "Where Is The Love" & "The Closer I Get To You".
When I was a kid my Dad loved Roberta Flack and this song in particular. This song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. Now that I'm older, I can really appreciate her beautiful voice and this beautiful song. She has some great songs in her discography, like "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Where Is The Love", The Closer I Get To You", and "Killing Me Softly", all of which were chart toppers.
I always think of my mom when Roberta Flack sings because she was the first to love her songs and play them. I picture the kitchen, the living room, her voice wafting.
Angelic Roberta is from the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, a state that also produced John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk and Sweet Baby James Taylor. Something in the water. This may well be my favorite love song of all. Joan Armatrading is another sister who can sing your heart out. Gratitude.
Roberta’s piano skills are often overshadowed by her vocal talent, her right hand fills between her vocals just sparkle and enhance the flow of this composition.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and the one and only Roberta owns it.... was 11 when this came out..... I have loved it and her ever since..... simply fabulous ❤
Your review at the end is spot on Biz. It is the complete and utter failure of the music industry in today's world of 'recorded tracks' (can't even say 'music' or 'songs' anymore) that misses out on the opportunity to connect with their audience through love songs. And love songs that reveal a vulnerability, a very human element that is _underrated_ in relationships.
Oh my God. The lyrics in this song perfectly express the feeling I had when I fell in love with the love of my life Stewart. Perfection. He died of a heart attack suddenly at 44. Love him still.
Roberto Flack has touched me deeply over the years with her beautiful, beautiful voice. If you want to hear other such greatness in song, I recommend listening to the masterpiece of an album by Minnie Riperton - Come To My Garden. I would love to see a reaction video on any song on it. It's music at its very best.
I believe that song was to Bob Marley. When they tried to assasinate him in 1976, Roberta came to him in the hospital. He recovered after that. May Jah bless you, mon.
love love love this performance. best ever. Some other passionate moments from female performers: *Phoebe Snow* Poetry Man. her song. *Aretha Franklin* live cover of *bridge over troubled* waters from Simon and Garfunckel *Chrissy Hynde* (and the pretenders) doing *Creep* from Radiohead
For Roberta’s R&B side, please react to her 80’s(?) hit “Back Together Again” with Donny Hathaway; such a great groove and makes you happy from beginning to end. ❤
Chilling❤ I got serious, goosebumps from that. If you haven’t already checked out her song with Donny Hathaway, “the closer I get to you”… You should definitely check that out and then check out Donnie Hathaways “ a song for you” ❤❤❤
Those Real Loving women with Goals, Hopes, Dreams, Conviction, Pride, Modesty and Class are out there, they just don't hang out in the Hood with gang bangers and losers...You'll find her, just look in the right places.

I totally understand, my song for my newborn (now 31) is Blood Sweat and Tears “You Make Me So Very Happy”, yet it’s a love song ❤
When the beauty of the voice matches the beauty of the song, you get magic that will last a lifetime. And it sure has.
Rarely do I say the word “exquisite” but Roberta is beyond beautiful. She’s magnificently exquisite. Out of this universe.
I bought this on 45 when I was 12 years old. 72 was a great year for contemporary music for sure.
I totally agree! I turned 15 in June of that year and I LOVED the music in the early seventies!
Goosebumps. Every. Single. Time. She is stunning. 🥰
Seriously one of the most beautiful songs ever made.

Her version of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow is stellar! ❤️😅💃🏼
Roberta's music and voice is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life. She reaches in and touches your heart and soul.
Absolutely Beautiful
Great commentary. I think the modern world is starving for this essence in it’s music.
She was always like watching an eagle circle the sky with her voice.
This is such a great performance - the studio version still gives me chills every time I hear it.

Just ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!! I loved it back then and still love it to this day!!!!!
I agree with you. We DEFINITELY need more love songs! AND more love, period! Just pure love. ❤️
The studio version of this song is even more haunting!
Roberta Cleopatra Flack 87 beautiful years young 😍👍🇬🇧
If there exists a more lyrical, more poetic declaration of one person's love for another, I have never heard of it.
One of the very best. She’s a treasure ❤
I always think of my mom when Roberta Flack sings because she was the first to love her songs and play them. I picture the kitchen, the living room, her voice wafting.
Pure gold. She's a legend.

One of the most beautiful and romantic songs ever! ❤
The studio version is magic that will never be captured live... bummer you don't ever do those versions.
Even more beautiful than the studio.
Amazing is a weak word to describe this lady it’s pure talent something that’s not found today that performance was live no computerized garbage
Maybe phenomenal is a better word for this beautiful, talented lady!
Beautiful performance.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and the one and only Roberta owns it.... was 11 when this came out..... I have loved it and her ever since..... simply fabulous ❤
Instant fkn chills and tears OMFG. I miss the 70's 🥲🥲🥲🥲
Her voice, her ability, Gordon's lyrics.
The most beautiful song ever.
Her restrained power always reminded me of Richie Havens. Such a beautiful voice.
Stunning song, Roberta's voice is stunning! Great reaction!
her voice gives me chills. I love this beautiful song.

For me, this is the best love song ever! ❤❤❤❤❤
She is awesomely in her own category
Oh my God. The lyrics in this song perfectly express the feeling I had when I fell in love with the love of my life Stewart. Perfection. He died of a heart attack suddenly at 44. Love him still.

And thank goodness for the great Scottish poet Ewan McColl for the wonderful lyrics of this beautiful song.
Wow why can't they make music like this anymore?
Magnificently beautiful 🤩
Just beautiful!!!!!
This song sung by Roberta flack is so underrated in my opinion….
Yes, its a beautiful song.
…….just watched the MTV awards show ! This blows away any act I seen in that show !! ❤️🔥❤️
❤ this song is magic.
She was amazing ! I watched the documentary on her life/ career ... Very interesting !!
Songs like this are so far in our rear view mirrors !!

Growing up my parents loved Roberta Flack and Della Reese, incredible voices!!!!!
Love, love, love this song! I was a teenager when this song played on the radio all day long over and over.
I had a crush on her voice.
we all miss love brother.
Reminds me of my early childhood.
Got to see her play in Cincy in the late 80s. She opened for, um, Cosby.
Beautiful ❤ song written by Ewan McColl for Peggy Sager. To have this song written for you 👌👌
I love when you react to music from my teenage years ❤️❤️❤️

The studio version is 100 times better than this live version. 100 times.

I'm in Australia. For some reason I can't get to your uver channel. You tube won't let me.
Written by an English man Ewan MacColl
Not English … Ewan McColl was Scottish … an important difference!!
Born and bred In Salford
The only female voices I like better are Ella Fitzgerald and Amy Lee. And Roberta is on par with Sade and Oleta Adams for me
"SHE" wrote this song ?????? what the #$%@£%$ are you on???
