A lioness is not capable of killing a large Spotted Hyena, and in one-on-one situations you will see a lioness run off a hyena, but they never commit to a full attack. Even males ca't always kill them, as we see in this video. People don't generally appreciate just how large a dominant Spotted Hyena is, how powerful - their hearts are bigger than lions' - and just how incredibly tough they are. They have that curious shape, with powerful long necks and much shorter hind legs than front in order that they can seize and hold prey larger than themselves. So a male lion is thus the only creature in their environment that they truly fear.

But some animals have better behaviour than others. Some animals do not eat their own but other individual animals may. The reality is to do with their nature, temperament and general spirit of the animal. E.g. Some cats are better than other cats.

I think this is partly why a lion can just stroll towards a kill upon which a fair few hyenas are feasting and cause them to scatter whereas a lioness cannot do that and in fact I have seen a few lionesses feasting and subsequently becoming unsettled by the presence of cackling hyenas that eventually cause them to retreat. I love lions, especially the males. So beautiful with magnificent strength. A world without them in the wild is too terrible to imagine. Let's all do what we can to educate ourselves on how to save and protect lions both in captivity and in the wild because they are in urgent need of saving. Do not visit places with cub petting and certainly do not visit circuses with animals. Zoos all over the world should be closed for good. These animals belong in the wild, to live a free life. How would you like to live the life of a circus animal? Or be confined to the boring, monotonous confines of a zoo enclosure? Why do we allow lions and other other to be abused and live a life of misery and pain for our entertainment. It it so wrong I'm appalled with humanity.

Hyenas aren't bad themselves but they are the worst enemies of lions. (except for humans). Lions kill not only them but also any other predator: leopards, cheetahs and so on.

They drive away lionesses from their kills all the time, and will bring down Cape buffalo in groups. While a male lion might be like Emperor Palpatine, a spotted hyena is like Darth Vader.

That hyena has heart to get up and try to survive. It's heart is actually massive. They can run all day. And are fast despite looking like left over body parts.

I think this is partly why a lion can just stroll towards a kill upon which a fair few hyenas are feasting and cause them to scatter whereas a lioness cannot do that and in fact I have seen a few lionesses feasting and subsequently becoming unsettled by the presence of cackling hyenas that eventually cause them to retreat.

You may know he has hyenas, as well as lions. I love lions, especially the males. So beautiful with magnificent strength. A world without them in the wild is too terrible to imagine. Let's all do what we can to educate ourselves on how to save and protect lions both in captivity and in the wild because they are in urgent need of saving. Do not visit places with cub petting and certainly do not visit circuses with animals. Zoos all over the world should be closed for good. These animals belong in the wild, to live a free life. How would you like to live the life of a circus animal? Or be confined to the boring, monotonous confines of a zoo enclosure? Why do we allow lions and other other to be abused and live a life of misery and pain for our entertainment. It it so wrong I'm appalled with humanity.
I to don’t agree with zoos too, they make me think of a future were one day we’ll only see wild animals in captivity. I hope so much it doesn’t end up like that. Being a hyena must suck. Pretty much every animal they share their habitat with could suddenly lash out and leave them fatally injured.
It doesn't suck at all for them actually. Spotted hyenas are tough as nails, very confident in their power, and have the number two position among all African carnivores. They drive away lionesses from their kills all the time, and will bring down Cape buffalo in groups. While a male lion might be like Emperor Palpatine, a spotted hyena is like Darth Vader.

Male lion, fully grown, healthy is unnstopablee to them, hyneas are terrified by them and with good reason. That is the only that kills them in regular fashion and with ease. You clearly don't know anything about the subject. Sure hyenas are tough and formidable animals but male lions are on completely another level. They are mostly built to defend, protect and to kill, hunting is secondary. That's why lionesses needs them and why they are crucial. Male lions are hyneas worst nightmare.
