I love that you share your thoughts on the *why* for certain things as you're explaining these techniques. Great example is the transform - we'd already seen what it does but hearing why you'd use it over just scaling within the merge (to make ongoing maintenance easier) are the kinds of insights that bring value to people well beyond just the node itself. In terms of "fancy", how about a countdown with a "confetti pop" at the end 😀
Figured I'd share the parts I revisit in this video, every time I make a timer: 1:33 setup text w/timecode 2:28 shortcut you need 3:05 important alignment 4:05 make it transparent 6:57 adding drop shadow 8:36 make the numbers wiggle
Thank you for the video!!! How you make the effect where the screen follows the mouse in the screen recordings?? I always wanted this for my tutorials. Thanks
Great tutorial and lots of additional helpful tips. I have an issue, when I export the video with the changing background I get banding, lines that move as the color changes. Is there a fix for this? I export best quality h.264 and tried several other settings but I'm just guessing at this point.
Thanks so much for all your videos!! I appreciate you helping us with all your tutorials. Quick question will you be having a Black Friday Sale on your site?
What would be the best way to change timer style based on the remaining time? For example, when it reaches 10s, I want it to change color and wobble more. Are keyframes the way?
Casey - This and the other motion graphics tutorials you’ve been posting are hugely helpful. I’m watching your content as a scared Adobe user who is nervous about a full blown switch to Davinci, and I feel like as soon as I get confident with motion graphics in Fusion, I’ll be confident to leave Premiere/After Effects. For example, you mentioned the “perturb” effect, which is similar to how I use “wiggle expressions” in After Effects. Pointing out things like that in your tutorials really helps me be more confident that everything I do in After Effects can be done in Fusion (just done a little differently). That said, I just had to do an effect in After Effects where I had to animate a line to grow vertically to measure the height of something on screen, and I needed a text effect to increase from 0 to 62 ft to simultaneously match the growing effect of the line. In AE, that’s super simple using trim paths to grow the line and a null object to drive a keyframed expression control to animate the number to increase from 0 to 62 ft. I’m sure you’ve covered this kind of animation at some point, and I realize that’s super specific, but I would love to see a Fusion tutorial on basic count-up and count-down functions that match things like animated bar graphs, circle graphs, or other on-screen animations. Anyway, that’s just an idea for a future tutorial if you ever have time. Thanks, and have a great day man!
Really wanted to make this timer so started to follow along right up to where you right clicked on the text box and got all those options. Sadly doesn’t work on the iPad version. Damn! Oh well …. Maybe next time.
Can you explain the use of Multiply for the paper? My initial thought was masking it with the timer, but of course that would have obscured the red outline. What exactly does the Multiply mode do?
It puts the texture over anything under it. It basically darkens the image where the texture is dark and doesn't affect it in the lighter areas. There are math reasons, but that's the effect.
First of all thank you for your great tutorials! This is probably a bug but I did this tutorial and when increasing the timer's duration the four colour background seems to disappear after a while even if I make the length bigger than the clip in the key frames panel or add the frame script to make it the length of the render. Could you make a video that shows how to avoid this especially when using png clipping masks etc. Maybe a loop of a video bg even for the timer? Basically something with assets that can grow in time, as I ended up using an sPoly as the mask for a bg for other parts of the timer just to get it kind of working. I am also trying to create a timer fusion composition that does like a tabata timer 20 seconds workout and 10 seconds rest repeated 8 times then a 1 minute break then repeat the entire thing 6 times. Each time a new media in is to be used for the 20 second x 8 section. Is there a way to make a fusion composition for this where you macro the input clip? You can also point me in the direction if you already done some of these elements. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL THE AWESOME TUTORIALS!
Is there a way to have the timer start flashing red for the last 10 seconds for example? Can you add those kind of conditions, like if the time is less than 10 seconds, do this?
Awsome video and I would love some 3d action with particles. Was just thinking I would love to make it 3d with particles. Hey your videos is so good I had to get studio version
Hey casey sir the way you explain the things in fusion is mind blowing......... I have Recently enrolled on ground control fusion course it is amazing....one thing i wanted to know like this time code options is available for only for time. what if i have to make number counter for money or some other data? Is there any specific option in fusion?
That's awesome thanks. I'm sure there's a way to do it... Possibly with the same technique and hiding a : somehow. Or there may be a much better way, if have to look into it!
I’ve said this before… And you need to hear it from people. You need to know you are appreciated. This could mean the difference between keeping a job and losing a job with any company. Anyone who could communicate effectively in the open “sight & sound generation“ Will do better with the skills generously teach. Again, thank you. No reply needed.
Well of course it always depends.... If you want a real answer on how to get better... Do a simple project that you short yourself from start to finish at least once a week. If you want to go fast, do a project every other day. Stopping and resting in between is essential because It helps cement that knowledge. If you do 4 projects every week, you're gonna get good really fast.
Is there a way to make a freeze frame (not for a countdown, obviously) from a timer, either with text+ in the edit page or in fusion? I made a timer with text+ in the edit page and a text+ title where I typed in the time displayed in the last frame of the timer.
Thank you, very well done, that's exactly what I was looking for, but one thing is still missing. For example, having the countdown blink or flash, as needed for a dramatic scene such as a rocket launch. Can you please do this again and post a new video online. That would be really important. Or you make a preset and I buy it from you with Paypal. Kind regards from good old Vienna Jazzboe Production
Nice Tutorial.. But somehow the timecode function is not working for me. If i say for example 1 min: it is finished in 54 seconds.. I checked my timeline and i made everything in 25 frames
hey so i want to have a timer that starts at 100 hours and is counting down and than 40 hours (im making a you-tube video thats time based and i want to show how long i have left ) is there a way to pre-add the hours and minuets and just have the seconds count down?
I am new to Davinci and have downloaded the 16 beta version. I copied all the steps here and reproduced the timer and it work well except I cannot get rid of the black background. It shows in fusion that it should be invisible but it is NOT. I've been watching a lot of videos and cannot fix the problem. I am using the free version. Any suggestions?
@@CaseyFaris You are right it is 19. I haven't figured out what the issue was but it resolved itself and is working fine. By the way, I am watching a lot of your instructional videos and am learning a lot. Thank you

I don't have a MediaOut node, and I followed everything to the letter, so far. Why is there not one there? Thanks. Ah. you need to double-click to get into Fusion, then double-click again, I guess. Hopefully this helps someone. EDIT -- at 3:12, you freely move the numbers. I can't move them. I just get a green outline when I try.... how do you freely move the numbers? Thank you! EDIT2: You have to grab the CENTER of the "Clock" thing. You can't simply move the numbers. You talk fast, and you edited it so you didn't specify EXACTLY where to click, to move. Maybe go over these fine details in future videos? I really appreciate your help with this, but those little annoying things got old fast, especially as today's my first day with Resolve. Thanks!
