    The person on the video made it so very plain and so very clear. What he has created in my mind is when I read something I'll be able to look for the three rhetorical methods of persuasion. Thank you.

    Great information in this video. As a University professor I certainly support the Natioanl State standards that stress these concepts in public education. That being said, the phonetic pronunciation is the current movement in the Southwest. Ethos with long o. Like Latin or Spanish.
    Do you think speakers will adjust? Or continue with the Greek pronunciation?

    • @thenatureofwriting9222
      @thenatureofwriting9222  4 года назад +1

      Great question. I hadn't really considered my pronunciation too much. I've heard these terms pronounced with a long "o" as well, and I probably do that myself from time to time. Perhaps I should make the change. :)

    what would you call a method of persuasion where you try to fool others into thinking that you're considering their opinion or even asking them to make the decision while at the same time attempting to steer them into a specific direction?

    Would an effective persuasive argument consist of all 3, pathos, logos, and ethos, or will it all depend on the situation?
    I'm having a hard time trying to discern when I would be using all three together or each individually.

    • @erniereyes1994
      @erniereyes1994 4 года назад +5

      Great question! I'm a first-year writing instructor at CSU Fresno, and the final for my class is a research argument essay. I encourage my students to use any and all the persuasive appeals (or "tools") they need to make the most convincing argument; one needs both reason and emotion to effectively persuade anyone.
      Now, if you were writing a report or even an evaluation, your purpose would be to inform. Therefore, it is perhaps best to resort to logos and ethos as well as have a neutral tone.

    Thank you very much for this great explanation . Could we find ethos in health bruchores. We could find logos pathos but where the writer could express his or her credibility? I dont think we have ethos in this kind of communication though it is supposed to be presuasive.

    • @thenatureofwriting9222
      @thenatureofwriting9222  3 года назад

      Thanks for the response. Ethos can be expressed in many ways. For instance, the tone of the writing is meant to indicate a certain character.

    Using pathos as a rhetorical strategy is a form of emotional manipulation when used in communication intended to inform rather than entertain, change my mind

    • @thenatureofwriting9222
      @thenatureofwriting9222  2 года назад

      But aren't humans also emotional creatures? Should pathos not play a role? Otherwise we'll all be like the character Data on Star Trek ...

    • @magicbanana3393

      @@thenatureofwriting9222 Humans are emotional creatures, but that does not imply it should always play a role. I don’t think people should train others to convince other people through unreasonable means (pathos). Emotion is often a detrimental to reasoning. It is useful to be able to spot pathos though.
