- UofLIFE.com/writing This University of Life video explains what a rhetorical analysis paper is all about and how to write a great one, along with pointing out the most common pitfalls to avoid.
This topic was better explained in 15 minutes, than in 4 hours of school listening to my professor read a piece of paper with words on it.
+Emily James Bruh i feel ya
Write a paper arguing he hates his job lol. Then write another arguing for a tuition refund! I couldn't stand boring profs either. Poor students get ripped off in so many ways. Angerating.
✌️😝🍁
totally agree
And, as a teacher, he's SO much better than I am. I love this guy.
ive learned more from this video than my professor "taught" me.
Damn that bullshit paper of mine is due tomorrow, i just wished that i found this video earlier!!

Better call Saul

Yes
A rhetorical device (content, argument, story, humor, sarcasm, sentence length, transition, voice, structure, strategy, and any other choice about how to present information) is just a tool available to the author/speaker. Rhetorical analysis is when you evaluate how effectively those devices were used, which are exactly what helps or hurts logos, pathos and ethos.
Incredibly helpful. Thank you
Thank you for the clarity. I am doing an online class and hearing the information vs reading it makes a HUGE difference to me. Thanks so much you helped me a ton.
10 years later and this video is still explaining this topic perfectly... thank you for helping me!!!
Great to hear it!
After over 3 years in post secondary, I now know how to write a paper. Well done
I was struggling with this topic but I'm so impressed with your lecture. Thanks for your lecture.
YES!!! What a simple explanation! Why is it that some people are so much better at teaching than others... you rock, thanks so much for taking the time to do this video and I hope you can side step the idiot remarks below. As far as the music, I thought it was a nice touch. :)

@@Bella1899 I'm guessing it has to do with the background music having a porno jazz vibe.

so so helpful, better explained than my teacher has in the past 2 months
Somebody please write rhetorical analysis about how this was helpful, and somehow include the dating site music 💀 Then paste it in thr comments
All jokes aside, this video helps a lot. I was literally having a panic attack bc I had no clue where to start with my paper lol.
OMG that background sound!!!!! what is this a dating site????!?!?!?!?!?!
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try some simpler ones in the future and see how ppl like them.
I like the jazz music, good grove. My teachers on RUclips needs it while sharing information.
I love how this was delivered. Your calm tone of voice feels like a conversation
I am so glad I found this video! Thank you!
A year later I come back to this video to get a good refresher. Thanks again good sir!
Your teaching is rhetorically powerful!
In other words, if a particular organization helped you grasp the ideas presented better, then you could say it improved logos. If it helped keep your attention and interest, you could say it improved pathos. If it influenced your opinion of the author as a skilled writer (as long as it didn't seem "too" skilled and manipulative), then it enhanced ethos.
I found this video very interesting the man in the video talked about Ethos, Pathos, Logos and I learned that when I was taking English 1010.
I have an ap test tomorrow and I didn’t understand this no matter the explanations and this !!! It helps
Very helpful, sir!
I enjoyed the smooth jazz in the back too
super super helpful! went through a couple videos for a half hour or so and this is by far the most informative and helpful! thank you! i now understand the overall purpose of the rhetorical analysis more clearly and can tackle it confidently!
he got all into it and bit down on his lower lip and that helped the music out a bit lol
This teaching is fantastic!!! You explain all of the details extremely well and have given me the tools I needed to write my Rhetorical Analysis on Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron. I am so hopeful now that I have seen this and will refer to it as I go along in my writing. THANKS!
Omg thank you for this!! Im doing a rhetorical analysis on Jon Ronson's TED talk about shaming. So i didn't know what to look for when watching his talk, but thank you!!
This is very helpful. Thank you!
Oh my goodness, Thank you so much. Now, I know how to complete this stupid essay that I've been so stress about for the pass 3 months

FYI here's a simple rhetorical analysis analyzing a current-events photo. Whether you agree with the author or not, you'll probably find yourself doing a mental rhetorical analysis of the article itself - are the points convincing? Do the arguments reveal bias? forward.com/culture/356537/why-times-trump-cover-is-a-subversive-work-of-political-art/ Rhetorical analysis is always subjective, but how persuasive and balanced can you make yours?
This really helped me, thank you!!
I also found his humor subtle and hilarious at the same time.
This is an amazing video.
I love it I do understand better.
Thanks.
I found this to be very helpful. Thank you!

K, for all your who don't like the background music, you can now listen to a music-free version at Rhetorical Analysis Paper Explanation
Why would you not like the background music??
Sure. If you want to focus on the satire, you could point out things like this:
A) how did they create the satire? What were the layers of meaning in it and how did they say one thing yet make it clear that they meant another?
B) how will their audience respond to it? Will they get it? Will they agree? Will some readers feel offended?
C) what was the purpose of the piece and did they accomplish it effectively? Could they have accomplished it more effectively with another style?
This is my favorite video on this topic. The style makes it super easy to remember and the music is perfect!
hope everyone gets a good grade on their essay!! mines due tomorrow...what a drag
I only liked for the shikamaru line 🙃
THANK YOU. I now feel more confident in beginning my rhetorical analysis essay.
Wooow ! Thank you... it can not be better than this. Only 15 minutes ❤️🙏🏻
Thank u! I’m really struggling with rhetorical analysis.
This was so helpful.
Thanks this is very helpful.
My prof referred us to this vid and yes this is a great explanation also you look like Jimmy McGill
Beautiful vid!!
Thank you so much! 🙏🙏
You've done an excellent job breaking rhetorical analysis down. Thank you so much!
thank you, you unlocked my mind now lets do this paper that is due tomorrow 3:), it seems easy now.
Huugeee help! Thank you very much!
Good luck!!
Thank you!!!
was soooooo helpful!!!
What is the background music? I know some posters have complained about its "soft-core porn" qualities. But I really like the opening chords.
It's something that came free with Adobe Premiere. I don't remember the track name.
Very helpful
How am I supposed to get 5 pages on a music video? X(
The Writing Process (The Writing Center: The Writing Process) will save you. Start by brainstorming all the aspects of the video that you could react to: sound, style, visual, combinations of how sound & visual support each other, good aspects, bad aspects, audience: who would this appeal to and who not?, purpose: is there a message here? If so, what makes it effective (or not)? Once you make that list,
Next, make sure you're making complete arguments for each point you make - make a clear claim, cite specific evidence, and explain how your evidence proves your claim.
By the time you finish these steps, you'll probably see that you could write 10 pages if you wanted to.
This helped alot thankyou
Thanks for the video !! LIFE SAVER
thanks, love you
Rhetorical analysis of this video Great Presentation!!! That is all!!!
I get distracted very easily and I found the very opposite with this video. The cadence of the music was a great thread to keep me focused on what was being said. No visual distractions--also great. I would think a podium (or other props) and animations would add distraction. I hope you attempt to get more feedback before making changes based on one comment! :)
Looks like Saul Goodman's younger brother. Same hair.
The information presented in the video was precise and informative. It helped me to better understand writing a rhetorician analysis and provide me with key points to empower me with the ability to write a rhetorical essay. Thank you.
Good luck!
I didn't get the data site out of this i did get some good information .
Thank you!!
How would rhetorical devices tie into a rhetorical analysis? Can they support/detract from the ethos, pathos and logos? Or do they simply denote stylization?
Thank-you!!!
Thank you!
This helped me so much! But, when writing my paper, can I use "I" statements to defend my arguments on what I believe? Or is it strictly third person only?
It depends on how formal your paper is. If it's fairly casual, you can totally say "I." That said, saying "I think" usually weakens your point, because you're reminding your readers that it's only your opinion.
If it's more formal, you generally don't say "I" because we used to think that would keep things more objective and accurate by removing all subjectivity. We now know that's impossible, but the old rule lingers.
Good video!clear and to the point that's what I'm talking about!
Shaun, if I sent you my first rhetorical analysis paper I just wrote, could you look it over for me? Thanks.
THANK YOU
I wish you were my teacher
thank you!
Good video. I got 2 days to done mine and I'm really confused what to do.
D) what was the context of the piece? Why did they choose satire? Was it based on their personality or the position of their readers, etc.?
There are a few ideas for you. Good luck!
Thanks very helpful
Needed more confidence/clarification before writing my paper...this helped. Thank you :)
Thank you for this comprehensive coverage of the topic. Not only am I in an online Rhetorical Criticism class (as a Communication major), without the benefit of open discussion of this topic, I'm a middle-aged college student who used to be a voracious reader, but whose fibro-fog is beginning to really futz with her reading comprehension - on top of the fact that progressive presbyopia means I can pretty much only read digital copies of my textbooks now, if I want to avoid eye strain and headaches. It's frustrating to be someone who used to be able to best absorb these kinds of concepts by reading about them, but who now requires more verbal explanations to wrap my brain around it.
This is an excellent video, saved me haha thanks
Isn't what he is saying just an argumentative essay? I thought rhetorical analysis is when you try to say how a text does or does not persuade people.
I'd disregard 2:21-3:00 because that example is really misleading but the rest of the video was fairly helpful for me.
P.s. Hi Bdoom
"Argumentative" is a broad concept. Yes, RA is argumentative in that you're making a claim and supporting it, but RA is a subset of argumentative, requiring you to analyze the presentation of some text (or film or whatever). All these assignment names that teachers are so in love with can get kind of confusing, I know.
RA may focus on many aspects. Explaining how a text persuades (or fails to) is one of those, but certainly not the only aspect available for analysis.
OMG, I finally understand what a rhetorical analysis is thank you !
This video really cleared things up for me, thank you! I really love the porno music too, it's probably half the reason why I like this video more than others.
what is the purpose of rhethorical analysis other than testing critical reading skills ?
Two main purposes (if your teacher handles it well):
1. It teaches how to make solid arguments - one of the most important critical thinking/persuasion skills, and one that requires practice to master.
2. Students realize that they have perfectly valid critiques of academic writing, that they have a voice in academia, that they can play a part in the conversation, and that they're not supposed to merely drink in and regurgitate whatever anyone with a Ph.D. behind their name writes.
