    Thanks for all of your support guys, from today as well I am starting to work with Siege Studios who provide premium painting services. I always take time to ensure anyone I work with in this way provides a good service and am happy for them to support me and the channel. Check out the link in the notes below.
    Recently some of you may have seen as well that I am looking into more miniature things like Necromunda, getting back into 40K has inspired me to do more painting and more pieces like this. So I will be putting up my first video showcasing a tutorial later this week. Thats it :D

      You forgot the part where a stupid guy with a gold fetish took over, forced most human worlds into a dictatorship without any good successors taking care of things if he failed - Primarchs being flawed and incapable as the Horus Heresy has proven - leading to the decline of humanity in a state that might be worse than what happened during the dark age of technology and probably dooming the majority of mankind in the long run (unless they pull some deus ex machina again). If the Emperor had not intervened humanity would have been off much better though it would have taken longer to form a new galactic human civilization.

    • @dontblink9445
      @dontblink9445 3 года назад +77

      @Random Grey Knight But thats just it, Earth was doing bad and so were 100s of other human colonies. However, there were human worlds such as Rophanon that were totally fine and beyond peaceful/prosperous. Tyranid invasion aside. They were doing just fine without the imperium. Ironically enough being apart of the imperium in "good" standing during the same series of events (The Tyranid invasion). Theres a good chance they would've still used Exterminatus on the planet. So either way the imperium was the death of this nearly perfect world of humanity. There are many other examples of worlds not invaded by any xeno, doing perfectly fine, and the imperium brought war and chaos to their world.

    • @philipped.r.6385
      @philipped.r.6385 3 года назад +115

      @Random Grey Knight That's imperial propaganda. Terra was certainly a huge post-apocalyptic mess, but a lot of the worlds that were forced into "compliance" during the Great Crusade had better administration and were more technologically advanced. A lot of them were doing perfectly fine and started to communicate with other nearby human civilisations. If you've been reading the Horus Heresy series, all the books point out subtlely that the Emperor might have been the vanguard of his own destruction: dabbling into the occult, getting most of his powers from the Chaos gods themselves, being a terrible father for his primarchs, building a incompetent and bloated bureaucratic power structure, and seeing everything and everyone as mere tools for his own goals...
      Can you still look at the what the Imperium has become and not see that this guy has totally and utterly failed at saving humanity from itself? The fact is that in 40k, some of the most dangerous foes of mankind is mankind itself. Only the Tyranids are arguably a worst threat than Chaos which is by and large made of humans turned traitors. Most other xenos aren't immediate threats: Eldars are too few and too divided, while the T'au are still a small empire with limited strategical mobility and even the super numerous and agressive Orks are too divided to be a continuous threat (they're not to be underestimated, but the fact is that they have troubles to remain united for long).
      The Imperium might be all they've got, but they haven't got much in the end. Had the Emperor been less extremist and had at least planned that he might not been there forever, it might not have gone full retard after he was mortally wounded. Instead it reverted into a nightmarish totalitarian theocratic barely organised chaos. What a huge success this is! :D

Since they are far enough apart that the fleets killing tau will be unable to leave and go to assist the fight against the tyranids in time.
      There's a reason they havnt done it. You really think the imperium would have let them get this powerful if they had the resources for a full over 200 planet exterminatus while also not leaving their flanks exposed.
      The imperium utterly hates these guys. They represent the polar opposite of the imperium in almost every way.
      And yet they didn't crush them.
      When your species becomes obsessed with not advancing and in fact has slowly lost tech and now focuses on swarm tactics and meat shields with a small tactical units of highly advanced specialists (almost like the tyranids have a similar method). You become very vulnerable to ultra long range ai powered drone weapons.
      Not saying they couldn't wipe them out. But by the time they get through the last of the moons full of nukes turned into kamikaze planes the size of hyperion and mimas from our own solar system. They will have no imperium to return to

    Few missing points about farsight.
    1.) even without his Ethereals, he still believes in a version of the greater good, as do those in the enclaves themselves. So the idea isn't all bunk, as if it was, the enclave wouldn't continue functioning the way it does without Ethereals.
    2.) Mind control or no, the Tau society is better. This can also been seen by Commander Fatsight's Enclaves. As he has a world of Human Helpers under his command. These humans are just as devoted to the "greater good" under farsight as they are under the ethereals. If it was just a "mind control" deal, then why would human imperials still be working with Farsight in the absence of ethereals? And if it was worse being under a Tau leader, why wouldn't they have attempted to defect back to the emperor?
    3. ) the grim-dark part of Farsight comes from his sword... Every soul he takes extends his life, but he (so far) has no knowledge of this and it is unknown if the Enclaves can / would survive without his leadership or restructuring. So only time will tell if the "greater good" is an actually possible / functional idea based on how the Farsight Enclave fairs going forward.
    My personal thoughts? The ethereals suppress a lot of the "conflict" parts of the brain. Physical acts of aggression are made harder in the presence of ethereals, which makes it easier for the Tau to work together. However it also explains why they have a hard time "digging in" as mentioned in this video. It also explains why it took longer for the more aggressive caste (the fire caste) to come around to the idea of the greater good. With more anger, or aggressive nature, more would have had to be oppressed. However the capability to work together is still entirely possible (again as seen by the Enclaves). Rather without the Ethereals (at present time for the Tau) they would need additional bureaucracy to settle disputes, and would probably need more of a way to deal with violent crime in their society. IT wouldn't destroy them, but it would slow their advance substantially, which would have the consequence of leading them to their own downfall. Though only time will tell, as if the Farsight Enclave succeeds then it is indeed possible for the Tau to exist without the Ethereals, and indeed fight for a greater good.

      I agree with your interpretation. It makes the most sense that the Etherals just convince people who all believe in the same ultimate goal that their plan is the best. The first generation of Tau wanted what was best for their tribe, and the Etherals made them all agree that the best course of action was the Greater Good. For the next generation of Tau who were raised into believing the Greater Good the same way everyone in both 40k and our world is raised into an ideology, the Etherals made them all agree what said Greater Good was. It's how they can have such single-minded pursuit of specific scientific advancements. All the scientifically inclined Earth Tau are influenced to believe that researching x is the best way forward. It's like real world hypnosis, you can't be forced to do something you don't fundamentally want to do. The Etherals decided that ignoring the Chaos was the best way to deal with them, so everyone did ignore them. This only works if the Etherals are themselves a hive mind that makes collective decisions, which I can get behind.
      Also as someone with mental illnesses and who takes medication for it, your thoughts being influenced by something that isn't your conscious being, instead neurochemicals, doesn't feel like a foreign invasion. A big part of therapy for depression or aniexty is learning to tell apart thoughts that are useful vs those that are born from your mental illness and aren't useful. I imagine that's what the Etherals feel like.

      For that last part, it’d also explain why certain races are basically just straight up off limits. Lessen the aggressive aspects of the Ork brain and suddenly they’re not having fun and cant do shit. Peaceful Tyrranids can’t happen since they’re biologically coded to hunt. Demons are both too new for them to figure out and also far too chaotic to suppress, and the Necrons are robots with basically no emotions to subconsciously affect anyways. That kinda only leaves the Eldar (who seem completely uninterested in the Tau), Humans (who either oppose them or have already joined), Abhumans not already a part of the imperium, and the races already absorbed into the Tau empire.
      All things considered, they are doing pretty damn great

They have such a different outlook on their society and the universe they live in than the jaded Aeldari, stubbornly uncompromising Imperium, and general OM NOM NOMming of the Tyranids. And there is an undeniable dark side to this reality; the T'au people are seemingly psychically controlled to serve the Ethereal Caste, and they aren't opposed to ethnic cleansing or exploiting the races they assimilate for labor, but they definitely feel like more more of a force for good in the galaxy than the half-dead empires of ancient factions still trying to hold out in a war of attrition that will grind billions more lives and planets to dust.

Nothing about the Imperium is honest, and it really speaks volumes just how much effort needs to go into spreading Imperial propaganda just talking about the Tau not to exemplify what shitheads they are, as opposed to comparing Tau more to say Eldar or a young pre-golden age mankind. It's because the Imperium itself is irretriavably dogshit in the 41st millenium and that's basically the entire point of 40K and its writing, which is how thoroughly broken and dystopian everything else. Even pre-Horus Heresy was unbelievably horrible, genocidal, corrupt, lying about its genocide or real motivation to doing it sometimes, and all this is because a lot of people want to believe the Emperor and Imperial propaganda out-of-game and take it at face value rather than what it is, which is basically the darkest most dystopian and over the top setting imaginable.
      The main issue with the Tau is being introduced is because basically by being even a *little* less shit, ends up contrasting so sharply with how horrible the Imperium truly is when you're no longer comparing our world to theirs, but anything existing in universe at all besides them, and it basically takes Chaos, Dark Eldar, and Tyranids even to make the Imperium seem like a plausibly necessary evil. So really it's more a problem the Tau don't truly fit in and never did because they're literally the only good guys in 40K regardless if even the worst accusation against them was true.

    One of my favourite little bits of lore is actually from Dawn of War. When the Tau encounter people speaking to them with the warp, they only hear a light buzzing that they think is from their com units. This causes an entertaining exchange of dialogue where some forces talk to them and they just talk about maintenance or interference and dismiss it entirely.
    Just a nice case of the creators sticking to the canon.

      Why have the Tau be so small and weak and struggle so much if they are just as bad as the rest of the setting? It is more poignant to watch a bright light of hope be snuffed out, or twisted as it grows beyond a few worlds.
      ----------
      It is the 51st Millennium. For only the last century, the Greater God has governed its vast empire from the first sphere of Tau'va. It is the master of all minds and hearts in the T'au Empire, and its circuits scream with the captured souls of mankind. Crafted from the great technological leaps in the thirteenth sphere of expansion, this Abhorrent Intelligence seeks to bring a new era of peace through tyranny, an end to Chaos and freedom.
      The Greater God's eyes and ears are on every world in the T'au Empire, ready to send its obedient Caste-bound Enforcers. Ragged fleets of refugees containing the dying remnants of countless races flee the baleful gaze to other regions of space, braving even the horrors of the Warp. Defending them are the brave Farsight Infernos, cyber-uploaded battlesuit heroes of unmatched skill and ingenuity. Their comrades in arms are few but fierce: The ancient Astartes superhumans of Ultramar and Fenris, the rowdy Krootork shamans and mercenaries, the devoted human Psykers of the Ophelian Ecclesiarchy, and even the few surviving Necrons and Eldar Tomb Lords. But for all their courage, they face oblivion between the cold grasp of the Greater God's cyborg slaves on one side and the always eager jaws of Chaos on the other.
      To be a man in such times is to be the last hope of one dying species among many. It is to live in constant fear of the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of mankind, when so many have fallen with the collapse of its last empire. Forget a brighter future, for it died with the failure of mankind's successors. The Five Dark Gods of the Ruinous Powers laugh as their long game slowly reaches its end.

But since all the 40k races are space faring, and since we have never had an interplanetary government in our history, no faction will fit firmly into one category.

      @Smilomaniac 5 лет назад +5

      @@Johmpa - Well it's an apt comparison when you spend a second to think about how communist societies were also class based, but merely pretended not to be.
      Most were at the bottom, some had a little bit of control, some had a lot and a very few stood at the top and had all of it.
      In democratic and republic societies, every person has a voice and an influence, even if it's a drop in the ocean you can still improve your own situation. Among the Tau and in communist societies, influence was a privilege given from above to those who fit the mold perfectly.
      Feel free to "it's not real communism" all you want, but compared to what we've had and have now, the two societies are very similar. The basic difference is that the Tau are compelled with 'other means' while the others are threatened with violence, social pressure and the unrelenting fear of being exposed by your fellow man as a dissenter.

    I seriously question how much the Tau really are a "slave race". Everything I read indicates the average Tau retain their faculties as sophont beings. At most the Ethereals make others around them suggestible, and have leveraged that to make themselves into the leaders of a species/Empire. Ultimately as a race they are at the whims of the Ethereals, and they do have a highly stratified society leading to little choice over what they can do with their life(something also true in the Imperium!), but any given Tau citizen or soldier has a free mind.
    Anyway, the Tau are probably just gonna keep on growing, there will be no end in sight. In-universe the Imperium cannot risk sending enough resources to crush the Tau; if they tried, they would lose too much on other fronts. Out-of-universe, GW is never going to deliberately phase out an entire faction for lore reasons(maybe if they transition to a new game, but that's never gonna happen anytime soon).
    Also, the very existence of the Farsight Enclaves disproves the idea that without the Ethereals the Tau would descend into barbarism. They're just more Tau that don't give **** about the Ethereals anymore and don't follow the Greater Good so closely, without losing the inclusivity that makes them so attractive as a society. Perhaps they couldn't hold the Empire together without their supreme overlords, perhaps they could. We'll never know, probably.

    The longer I watch this video the more these guys grow on me. Even if they are controlling their people on some level, they seem a lot less severe than so many other races. I don't have to worry about brutal inhumane torture with them, I like they don't have the stomach for some of the things the other older races do. That means even if the ethereals are liars and fully aware of the extent of their control and use it willingly they don't seem cruel. They don't want suffering. Like, I can roll with that. Seems not a terrible existence considering so many of the other horrors in the 40k universe.
    Edit: "Each had individual styles to warfare and relevant philosophical thinking to pair with their approach to military engagements"
    Ya, ok, that's a level of mental manipulation I could put up with in this universe if we are still capable of this. Sounds like they keep a reasonable amount of individuality.

    Here is the issue I have with the mind control theory. In the book Farsight: Crisis of Faith it is confirmed by the actions of Aun'Va that there is absolutely a method by which Ethereals control Tau. I won't spoil the scene. Those who know it, know what I'm talking about. So that confirms your line about them being controled, but I firmly disagree that by losing an Ethereal they would revert back to the Mon'tau mindset. In fact it is also confirmed that the Farsight Enclaves are thriving without Ethereals, and Farsight himself still believes in the Greater Good, albeit wthout the Ethereals. The casts in the Enclaves still cooperate and there is no infighting (on a major scale). The conclusion is, as always, a fine middle ground. Ethereals control the Tau but likely through a means that makes them maliable to the Ethereal's propaganda and not by means of direct control (apart from some circumstances). Globally all Tau HAVE accepted the Greater Good of their own free will and they are so indoctrinated in it now that anything else would likely never occur to them as an alternative.

    • @kitsune_bot1654

      Likely some sort of mental propaganda where your mind near the ethereals is always thinking some sort of way or having it in the back of your mind, and without an ethereal for the first time the tau might become a bit confused and disoriented why they aren't automatically having thoughts of the greater good in the back of their mind.

      Caveman is probably an expletive. Probably more akin to return to tribal disputes and warfare. Any advance would be halted by chaos and in fight. Just like humanity. Maybe some splinter world could be fine, but as unified empire, they would crumble from within.
      The earth caste probably could take over eventually as they retain the technology if they are smart enough to develop defensive measures in time. Maybe becoming increasingly more dependent on AI and create man of iron 2.0 which would be bad for everyone in the galaxy. The air caste could go their own ways and become the tau pirates. The fire caste would deal a lot of damage and maybe try slave the others through force. The water caste would be toast.

Even so as I subtle believe the human race could follow this same path to achieve far greater achievements than it ever thought possible through technology and coming together for a single purpose. The Tau act selflessly whether voluntarily or in some manner forced in the pursuit of something that is far bigger than itself. Yes I love individuality and freedom of thought, expression and creating however imagine if there was some idea, some greater threat to humanity that would force us to put aside our petty differences and sense of self for your entire race, culture, and others willing to fight with you to achieve it. Okay, so... Three questions
    1. Are we... just not going to talk about how the fact a huge number of Tau work in the Farsight Enclaves - An independent state free of Etherals - and isn't in a state of constant civil war and still adheres to the Greater Good, alongside Gue'vesa, which puts a hole in the idea that without Ethereals, Tau would abandon that philosophy and start fighting each other?
    2. ...If the Tau ground the Imperial forces to a halt, held the line against *three space marine chapters*, and made the Imperium retreat... How did they get smashed? While they took heavily casualties, that sounds much more like the Imperium getting /absolutely humiliated/ by a tiny race of Xenos they should have been able to obliterate with their thousands of years of experience in warfare.
    3 - I don't see how the Ethereals are really any different to the Emperor of Man when you get right down to it. Both use external forces to persuade people to follow them, and because of them, both assign civilisations assign roles to their citizenship before they're even born. So the idea of free will is... Sort of redundant, is it not? Very few races actually employ a sense of free will, so why is it only the Tau who get shit for it?zenship before they're even born. So the idea of free will is... Sort of redundant, is it not? Very few races actually employ a sense of free will, so why is it only the Tau who get shit for it?
    My biggest issue with this entire video seems to be the idea that the Tau are evil because of their caste system and because they have no real free will - Only two races are really "free", which are the Tyranids (Which might have been made by the old ones if that theory is correct, so is it even free will?) and the Orks, who are universally the biggest pains in the arse in the galaxy. Imperial solders get no say if they get conscripted or not
    This might be because I'm a Tau main, but there feels like an absolute ton that was just not mentioned. Tau quality of life, the implications of the farsight enclaves, the preservation attitude towards life the Tau have. The Ethereals might be a nasty lot, but as was stated in Tau lore - Without them, the entire Tau race would have been wiped out long ago. In the darkness of the far future, and the galaxy the Tau find themselves surrounded in, that seems truer than ever. I can't find myself too mad at the Ethereals when considering that. Especially when the Imperium does the exact same thing, but with about 1000 times more death.

      @QosmicVoid 5 лет назад +23

      @@gumblebrum And? I don't exactly see how choosing to be a Heretic in the Imperium is any different to putting a bullet in your own brain. And plenty of Imperium civilians are simply accused of heresey and then executed - Which at least won't happen within the Tau Empire.
      Do you consider an ant to be an oppressed species because it lives within a hive mind? Because thats not how a hive mind works. When you truley get down to it, a hive mind would boil down to a pure democracy - All viewpoints considered, all information accepted, and the choice that benefits the most is the one that is taken. A Hive Mind is not an inherently evil thing - It's just a biological component of a species. It's no different to any other. We simply oppose it because as Humans we see it as a way of life against our own.
      And I can't get angry at the fire caste. Look at the comparison in armor alone between the Imperium and the Tau.
      A fifteen year old can be dragged from his homeworld, given an absolutely worthless lasgun, and sent against a horde of Orks or Tyranids for no other purpose than to be a seconds worth of a distraction while the space marines get here and do the actual work.
      The Tau train their warriors from birth. They learn tactics, practice combat, and get given better equipment. The same can be said for their navy and their builders caste.
      Say what you like about the caste system - At least the Tau prepare their people for the shitshow they're forcing them into - And within that, they're allowed to choose their specific specialty. And thats more than i can say for most species in the fuckfest that is the 41st millennium

    • @TornadoADV

      The Damocles Crusade was an afterthought of the Imperial Sector it took place in, while the Tau had to literally use EVERYTHING their civilization had to survive. That's why the Tau got smashed, there were no reserves, no second line, no fallback positions. If they had failed and been routed by the Imperium before the Tyranids saved their butts by drawing it's attention away from them, they would of ceased to exist as a species.

      True. While I will in no way claim the Tau don't have their darker side I really want to know where this stuff about the Ethereals turning them into unthinking drones is coming from because I've never seen anything to suggest as much in the lore. The only point even sort of hinting there might be a case to be made here is how quickly the Ethereals brought them to peace, but for all we know that's simply because the Tau think differently than humans. Is the Greater Good propaganda just as much as the Imperial Cult? Yeah, they're called Blue Space Commies for a reason. But every first person account we've seen from a Tau suggests nothing about being mind controlled, aware or not. And I've never read of the Tau breaking down outside the effect of an Ethereal, I mean there's Farsight but otherwise (not to mention he broke off while MULTIPLE Ethereal were present)? The only thing I can imagine being referenced here is when division arises in the Tau whether to continue the attack or retreat when an Ethereal is killed, I never attributed this to some sort of mind control being lost but simply the fact that some Tau have stronger will than others when someone the Tau may (foolishly) have made out to be a near god walking in the Tau bedrock, of course some are going to backpedal when their highest ranking officer is slaughtered in front of them.

No Tau is allowing themself to be manipulated any more than we are when we surrender all our data to social media and credit cards, perfectly willingly, because it’s convenient and we convince ourselves it’s not a big deal. We might allow ourselves to debate about some abstract notion of personal liberty, but in the 41st millenium, the sheer material reality of Dark Eldar enslavement or worse being an actual possibility renders all debates like that absurd.
