Cycling to 4,800 m Altitude // A Bike Touring Short Film // Part 29 - Ecuador (continued)

- The night before we attempted to cycled up to the refuge of Chimborazo at 4,800 m.a.s.l., we camped at 4,200 m, on a wide open, high-altitude plain. We found some shelter from the relentless wind behind a little hill, with a spectacular view of the volcano! Chimborazo, the highest mountain in the world (when measured from the Earth’s core) at 6,263 m, is an incredible sight to behold! ...and we were lucky enough to experience it in good weather.
When we had previously cycled at altitudes between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, we had never really experienced any strong symptoms of altitude sickness, or noticed a significant reduction in our fitness. But this time, starting at around 4,400 m, we could really feel our lungs and muscles being starved of oxygen. It felt like with literally every meter more, we had less and less power, until at some point we weren't sure anymore, if we could make it...

Amazing and impressief nature !!!
I can barely walk at that altitude much less ride. Congrats for riding most the way up.
Thanks! 😊 In the meantime we've actually cycled to 5800 m.a.s.l., but our video about that is only coming later this year. 😅
@@louisaandtobi I started watching you videos from the start again but this time with my son. We plan to do the Pan-American highway from deadhouse Alaska to Ushuaia in a few years. You're videos are very helpful. Thanks.
@@billweberx Awesome, that sounds like a fantastic tour! 😊
Hello you two,
I have the utmost respect for this achievement. Sometimes I thought you might turn around after all.
Ok maybe I'm not the first but I've been thinking for a long time who you just remind me of. Now I know. Dirk Nowitzki. Also very much because of the language.
Oh yes, thanks for the take away
Greetings
Bernhard
Ecuador es mágico
Another great video! Thanks!
Thanks 😊
Ihr seid unglaublich! Gratulation und take care of your self!
Danke! 😅
👍👍🇮🇳🇮🇳❤❤..IND
Can you guys name the upbeat guitar song in the video. I really liked it 🥲 awesome video. Yall really have no limits. Great job
Unfortunately we don’t know it off the top of our heads, we’d have to check in the edit. But we get all our music from “Epidemic Sound”.
Finally. Good to sea you again. Maybe you can cross the road with my friend who is there also ,solo girl K.
Another great video It is nice to see the experience of cycling at altitude. I bet you will feel much better even if you only descend a few hundred meters.
Yea, ever Meter really makes a difference! 😅
A hell of a trip/job; take care of your body. Humans are not designed to meet and survive high altitudes
We will!
Really to bad Ecuador is crazy expensive!
Yea, it depends what you do and where you are in Ecuador. Away from the touristy areas it’s not too expensive! 😊
ആശംസകൾ👍👍
I would have climbed without the gear. It seems to me a bit risky to ride up there with all the equipment.
It was good training for the months to come which we pretty much only spent above 4500 m.
Wait till you get to Aconcagua.
I like your camping activates. What was temperature.
Don’t know the exact temperature, but below 0 C for sure!
@@louisaandtobi I did camping -8.0 C
@@maliksince1973 Yea, we did that as well while cycling across the USA in winter beginning of this year. The coldest temperature we camped was -8 C and the coldest temperature we cycled was around -14 C.
Were those vicuña watching you at your campsite?
Yea 😅
What do u do with condensation for sleeping bags, do they dry by the next night or do u sleep in them wet.
When we have enough time in the mornings we put them out to dry, and usually they dry pretty quick. If not, we have to pack them wet and try to dry them in the evening before sleeping in them.
Climb high; sleep low. Couldn't you find a place to cache your unnecessary gear for your climb to the high point?
We probably would’ve found something, but we also wanted to try it with all the gear as a practice / test for our next weeks in Peru. Since this video, in Peru, we’ve spent weeks and weeks above 4000 m, up to almost 5000 m, and we’ve felt completely fine.
No amount of beauty is worth that much pain and misery
We see it otherwise 😅
Thanks for a great video. I noticed in the last video you were pretty much still in jungle and then to start this video you were in a more arid environment. I assume the transition was around Quito when you came back from the Galapagos Islands. Good luck and good journeys.
Yea, exactly, from the Jungle we went up over a 4000 m pass to Quito and then the environment changed. 😊
incredible.
❤Very Beautiful Senary of your video. I never forget it. Baidyanath Modak(Chandannagar, Kolkata, India).
I am falling inlove you guy. Your vdo is beautiful real nature. Inspired me to discover our tiny world.
Thank you for sharing ♥️
Lek&Nee
Respect to you. Tough riders ever !
Wow!! Massive respect guys that was awesome :D
Thanks! 😊
Congratulations 👏🏻 to you both. May adventure always follow you ☘️🐺☘️
Thanks! 😅
Far out:)
What a great video by Tobi!!.Thanks again for sharing your adventures with us.Take care
Amazing! It's wonderful to see 4800 M on a Touring Bike.
Thanks 😊
Wow, what an adventure... I can imagine you feel a bit dizzy after cycling up to almost 5000 meters.
Yea, definitely 😅
Amazing and exciting because I can see your faces full of happiness and satisfaction. I'll go there in a few days on a Bikepacking tour.
Nice, enjoy! 😊
