Once upon a time, in the early 90s, in the city of Gothenberg, there were three bands. Dark Tranquility, In Flames, and At the Gates. In '95, these three unloaded a magnum load of metal on the world, basically inventing Melodic Death Metal. At the Gates' "Slaughter of the Soul" is a stone classic, as is Dark Tranquility's "The Gallery", and In Flames' "The Jester Race". At the Gates is the most "thrash" of the three. In Flames is the most likely to shift into a major key and give you a pretty interlude. Dark Tranquility is the most consistent and, to me, has some of the most sophisticated songwriting in metal. All are worth your attention on the channel.
Eucharist is another band from that area that's sometimes cited as another of the main influences for what would become Melodic Death Metal. Generally speaking though, AtG and Carcass are usually considered the main progenitors of the sub-genre.

One thing to consider about the lyrics is that these were very young Swedish dudes, writing the best lyrics they could in English. If I looked at it from a lyricist's perspective, the meter of the word Purgatory fits the song, where hell doesn't. Not that they hadn't cooked deeper meaning into the song, but I think you have to give them the benefit of the doubt, given the givens.

Hi. This is purely speculation but I have some thoughts on the lyrics. The word for purgatory in swedish is skärselden (a litteral translation would be "cutting fire"). The swedish church is lutheran so that informs our theological understanding of purgatory and I would say that swedes are not that well versed with thelogy over all (not many people call themselves religious). So I have always had a negative view of purgatory and thought it was att bad thing/place. I can't speak for Thomas Lindberg (who wrote the lyrics) but I can see how the image of a fire worse than fire unleashed on the earth is a terrifying image. I hate writing in english so I hope that this made sense.
I listen to these guys while I write certain parts in my stories, love the atmosphere they create. One of the top metal bands for sure. Another paramount alliance pick.
