Mostly ck3, but planning to convert my save to EU4, I guess I learnt something to be patient. Let them come... trap them then bite them where it hurts. The purple empire still exists on half of cyprus. I am here to relearn the mechanics...so keep the videos coming.
Pls make GigaChad Hungary next patch, focus on explaining how to improve the economy, mostly i find myself having half of europe but not even beeing able to maintain max force limit, no money, long vid just like this
I actually prefer these types of videos, not that the other content is bad I do watch most of them but a lot of intricacies are missed in summary videos by their very nature so looking forward to this series.
Girls with time machines: Oh my God, that's my grandma, we look so much alike! Boys with time machines: Emperor Constantine, please watch this video, we can defeat the Ottomans!
I've had several Byzantium starts where I won the first war with Otto only to get stalled/crush during my second or later war with him. So I think guides like this are really important, it really takes two 100 percent wars to really kill Otto. Thanks your guides on 1.30, I was actually able to do my first WC with Byz.
I love these “deep dives” as opposed to the more instructional videos. As we know, in game decisions can change based on in-game deviations. I love seeing your real-time decision making. Thanks for making this video.
Adding to the general consensus, I loved this. I often don't have the patience to watch twitch streams, but these long form videos are excellent in terms of learning the detail that helps raise my level. Looking forward to the follow up!
I really do prefer even if its an hour only at a time. Because like you said consistency is tough and some people are more lucky than others , but being able to watch everything unfold with 0 jump cuts is really the way to learn and pick up new tricks because you can see the whole context and build up . As someone who spent a lot of time away from the game trying to learn the new and remember old having jump cuts from every little point of action doesn't help. Thank you Budgetmonk
yeah a follow up vid would be great, i particularly find the like the period after defeating the ottomans more of a pain than the start. After i deal with the Balkans and further ottoman wars there usually is a huge mamluks i have to solo, and the first two wars(take a syria province and kick out of anatolia, then a feed syria vassal war) challenging and always driving me into spamming mercs and loans to deal with them.
There is a couple ways to deal with them, the main way that I deal with them is by attacking Cyrpus after continuing the naval build up from the first Ottoman war. They can't protect the war goal, and you can let their army across the Bosporous piecemeal which you can then stack wipe until they run out of manpower. After awhile, you can just walk over and start occupying their stuff. Easy mode is if you can get Chios off the genoese and take the province right across from it from the Ottomans and release-> scutage the opm and you trap a good portion of their army on the island.
I don't normally comment and I note that this is an older video, but I wanted to say BudgetMonk, I actually like these types of videos. This has now been watched by me four times already as I try to understand the best way to complete some EU4 achievements. I have completed "The Knights" achievements due to this and the other complementary videos you have posted. But I'm now playing Aragon and still see the benefits of this strategy for the Aragon playthrough I am currently attempting. I know that you are on Twitch regularly, but being able to pause and rewatch rather than a live video suits my leisure time and ability to engage more than a Livestream. Thanks for the content and please keep posting.
this playing stlye is just kind of an art brother.congrats.your narration is so smooth so its relaxing thank you for making this ideo.its also instructive for who wants to be a pro player. thank you so much.
This is why i watch your channel, for all these 1000iq plays. Absolute legend and cheers for the videos mate. I've got around 5k hours in euiv and still get new ideas and strats from your vids
I’m addicted to Byz after your vids and the dopamine of crushing Otto boys is intense. But I never know what to do and flounder in the mid game, so another episode would be fantastic. This might be my favorite monk vid
Really great content! I tried following this and it mostly worked for me. My main problem was that the Ottomans allied Crimea and were able to call them in part way through the war. The Crimean armies and fleets and military access around the Black Sea caused me all kinds of grief until I was able to peace them out. Still managed to complete the war for the perfect peace deal in 6 years, but with considerably more loans and war exhaustion. I also had to fight another full stack of Ottoman troops since they were able to rebuild while I was dealing with Crimea.
Really enjoyed the content. Like that you did it on normal as well. A lot of your content is really cerebral - I'm not as smart as you are - and this was one of the more accessible videos of yours I've seen. You really highlighted how to bait and trap on the island, and was really enjoyable. Thank you. Finally subscribed.
Really awesome variation Monk! This is one good reason to still vassalize epirus, which I dont do anymore. I usually reconquer then humiliate + force religion for quick age obj (and Epi usually joins genoa so its like a backup way to dec on Genoa if you can't directly due to big allies). You're actually the one that made my first Byz run possible back in 1.30(?) and videos like these are welcome from time to time to see how playstyles differ nowadays. For those interested in a different/previous style (based on budget monk) -- I just did this last week, 1.33: I still prefer to be the one declaring the reconquest CB tho to minimize AE (i really budget this) post war and save points, but its RNG based/not guaranteed (depending on Ottos mood) than BM's current style since its banking on the possibility that Turks declare on on the east first (you can reset the game if he decs on you first or try the video's style -- I ally everyone I can and show Otto im strong so he'd choose another target). Then while they're distracted (candar/kar/dulk/AQ -- wait for him to actually siege far away), I quickly siege balkans and block the strait until region is fully sieged. Then I trick otto to cross to siege either Const or the fort beside it by hiding my fleet near albania and my troops around wallachia. Surely enough, he crosses, I block with my fleet then I kill the stacks (dont let him cross with a full army stack of 20W, you can't fight him on par, i usually use the inf + 4 cavs to overwhelm, considering the force limit so its not expensive -- also the main reason why I bring Albania to the war due to 5/5 gigachad Skanderbeg). Rinse and repeat until he's weak enough then cross to Anatolia. Also, its very important to prepare the next step before you win. I usually like declaring on Ragusa (given it has no big allies) fast after I fix everything up after the war (1-2 months positioning). This is to first claim bosnia/herzo then release dalmatia eventually, giving me cores against venice and hungary. I like getting max money + war reps from Turks this war. BUT if Ragusa has too big allies (venice, aragon, austria), you can do the candar/karaman ally trick shown in this vid. From that point on, your world is your oyster! Enjoy Byz running! its awesome :)
Lol budgetmonk I love your videos. Because... you're good at the gyame. I'm the same way with ck3. I love eu4 but if I had to do a grand campaign wc let's just say I'd have to do some serious work in the viking age to pull it off. But I learned so much eu4 watching your channel, love the vods, hours of my life I needed something just to be making noise and you were there for me. Thanks.
I like the super informative vids, but this is a nice change of pace. First vid I found of yours was your og how to own as Byzantium so it is nice to see a mix up. Variety is the spice of life!! P.s. much easier to follow this one than the original lol
I'd love to see more from that kind of content. I can't watch most casual euiv youtubers because they make me cringe, and most of them aren't any good either ngl. Really nice change of pace watching the master play more casually. Keep it strong!
Hey thank you for the long play format for this video I have only like 300 hours and it's nice to see some of the micro from a more experienced player because of how complicated this game can be.
Please do this again. It's great to see a snapshot of a campaign with advanced commentary. Most other creators tips are either too simple or just plain wrong.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Your content is amazing, the way you speak actually allows one to think on the actions being taken in the context of the game (what do you mean non ADHD content?), and it's incredibly satisfying to watch your byzantium. Please continue this.
Many thanks! I really appreciate this. Had a fairly good Byzantium run earlier this year, but I still consider myself a beginner. Videos like this one are very useful!
I enjoyed this. While EU4 guides are good, they're more of just templates to start with. Obviously the very nature of this game means that stuff goes off the rails as soon as you unpause, so it's nice to see a player actually go through the first hour of a campaign. It really lets us see your playstyle and how you respond to EU4 doing EU4 things. Please make more.
I know this is a little "old" but I wanted to say that I enjoy this style of content way more than any other style of EU4 contract. I have 1200hrs of EU4 in, but most of those are from 2014-2016. I have no clue how to play this game now. Having someone explain it in the way you do is extremely helpful, and taking your time uneditted rather than supercut together makes it easier to follow long. Looking forward to the next vids in the series!
"by detaching my transport them move faster than being slowed down by galleys" one of the reasons to watch BudgetMonk, i watched so much content and have 6000+ hours on steam and still didnt know this
I tried this. Followed it to the T. Ottomans put their entire army on Constantinople. Managed to bait one of the armies over the Cephalonia. By the time I'd managed to do the they got mil tech 4, and I lost the battle for Constantinople. :(
Hey Monk! Great video! One comment though, I believe heir leading army DOES cost 1 stab if he dies. Its one of those obscure interactions, and I had to look it up to be sure
Hmm yeah. I think you are right actually. When you make a heir or ruler a general they have increased chance to die. However I think if he does die in combat you do lose stab. He needs to die during a battle I believe.
Brilliant as always, I actually prefer these to edited!! I do the prestige thing on estates aswell. Its very nice. Also, a tip from a noob like me is to rival Genoa and send a scorneful insult, that way you get PP and also improved relations with the Knights as they usually rival Genoa early! Also u get 25 prestige IF it is negative so you don't really lose the prestige from the insult! 😊😊😊
I have well over 1000 hours in the game and, I'll be honest, I've never played on anything except for normal. I completely forgot the Options page even exist until a couple weeks ago I decided to try a campaign with RNW and remembered there was something in the settings for fantasy scenarios. Then I saw what the modifiers were on Very Easy and decided to see HOW easy was "very" easy.
Only choice I don't really understand here is taking the -15% naval maintenance doctrine instead of taking any of the others. It doesn't seem to me like spending the money on that, which I think would earn itself back only after a few decades, is worth it. Especially when at that point you should already have a decent enough income to cover for a bigger fleet. Sincerely, a shit player who relies on your videos to play Byzantium to a good effect haha. Regardless, great great video. Would be nice to see more like this one. Seeing the whole strategy played out in full detail is wonderful. Possibly another hour of power where you apply multiple of the short tactics videos you've uploaded before?
As a sneak peak, I attempted this strategy on 1.34. First of all it feels like much more of a tossup between who the Ottomans will attack, "me" or somewhere in Anatolia. Second and more crucially, they've done something I've never seen before, and attacked my scutaged Athens. They then siege Athens and Constantinople, with maybe a secondary 7-stack taking care of Epirus, meaning they can't be reliably island trapped. We may need to go back to the drawing board.
Leaving my strong support for this kinda stuff here. I'm a bit of a lurker on your channel and enjoy skimming through some of your vids, but this one I watched from start to finish and I'm keen to try and do another Byzantium attempt soon! The only feedback I'd suggest is don't be afraid of bad stuff happening, or trying to avoid unwanted events or situations. These kinds of things are the problems that I have with other guides and with guides in general, but seeing you deal with these unfortunate circumstances makes me more confident about dealing with them if they appear in my runs. The speed was a little fast, but that's okay - youtube's speed feature will be helpful when it comes to playing a Byz run and I'm trying to match you move for move! Love from a fellow kiwi!
Budget monk restorato imperii Love the vids, they help me a lot, thank you for giving us a guide for every update. Greetings from the province of thessalia ❤️❤️
@@BudgetMonk Yeah man, I caught up on them. You fought hard as hell there. I know I would've given up several times in that run. Really just wanted to say hide chat threads, ignore chat posts, don't reply to chat posters, and complain on. Keep it up dude!
Always appreciate learning more details each time I watch your videos. [edit figured out crownland didn't increase due to when i saved right after peace deal. Next day it didn't increase crownland] I think I'm following but still can't get Otto to attack, they tend to attack Candar which i take advantage of but just was looking forward to the truce reset :-) Not sure I'd used white peace for that, great idea. Thanks
really love the guide - tried it myself. The first war i was able to win with your strategy. Not that well like you - my finance and manpower was low. After that the real problemss begin because i get attacked by Poland/Venice and cant find allys to protect me.
What can I say. Well...it's working more or less. In my game they build additional 7k and they stayed in gelibolu while main stack sieged Const. I pulled this off eventually, but ended up taking more mercs and loans, so keep this possibility in mind. P.S. After truce reset through Karaman war, they inst-allied Poland and moved capital. No idea how to deal with it.

You're actually the one that made my first Byz run possible back in 1.30(?) and videos like these are welcome from time to time to see how playstyles differ nowadays.
For those interested in a different/previous style (based on budget monk) -- I just did this last week, 1.33:
I still prefer to be the one declaring the reconquest CB tho to minimize AE (i really budget this) post war and save points, but its RNG based/not guaranteed (depending on Ottos mood) than BM's current style since its banking on the possibility that Turks declare on on the east first (you can reset the game if he decs on you first or try the video's style -- I ally everyone I can and show Otto im strong so he'd choose another target).
Hell yeah, Monk is back.
Already longing for the second part.
Really nice video.
Looking forward to the hour 2!! Great gameplay Monk!
more hour of power!! this is awesome since i cant always catch you on stream!
Budget monk restorato imperii
Love the vids, they help me a lot, thank you for giving us a guide for every update.
Greetings from the province of thessalia ❤️❤️
Awesome. Exactly the best format for the purpose.
This is so great, glad to see a detailed tutorial from you!
Wow! So much smoother than the Byzantium livestream. Looking forward to seeing this continue.
The livestream was very hard difficulty. Also I always have bad streams, it really gets old quick.
@@BudgetMonk Yeah man, I caught up on them. You fought hard as hell there. I know I would've given up several times in that run. Really just wanted to say hide chat threads, ignore chat posts, don't reply to chat posters, and complain on. Keep it up dude!
Any budgetmonk content is good content. Id love to see you complete the "restore the penactory" mission before the reformation kicks off.
Great video, i like this long format.
Always nice to learn new tricks!
the moment when candar is giving you occupations for the turks to reoccupy and therefore "making gainz"
What an awesome video. Keep it up, dude, you're like noone else.
This video made me want to play byz again, after years not touching them. even if i have all achivements, great work!!
I'm barely past 20 minutes in, and this is so far my favorite Byzantium "guide."
Always appreciate learning more details each time I watch your videos. [edit figured out crownland didn't increase due to when i saved right after peace deal. Next day it didn't increase crownland]
I think I'm following but still can't get Otto to attack, they tend to attack Candar which i take advantage of but just was looking forward to the truce reset :-) Not sure I'd used white peace for that, great idea.
Thanks
"He's gonna declare soon" - instant declare. lmao
I really love this video format
Learn something every time I watch you, thanks!
Thanks for watching.
really love the guide - tried it myself. The first war i was able to win with your strategy. Not that well like you - my finance and manpower was low. After that the real problemss begin because i get attacked by Poland/Venice and cant find allys to protect me.
this would make an excellent series, monk. please continue this series, maybe starting as granada or something
