      They pretty much did. They sought and bought Genoese and Venetian naval and mercenary aid, and even took out massive loans. Loans were somewhat of a novelty (in terms of acquiring monetary capital at interest and not other valuables) in those days though, so their effect would be much lower than the game suggests (despite the IRL numbers being massively larger).
      One of the hard-to-solve problems they had was that they ruled over a small rump state that was known for its infighting, corruption and disloyalty... but even that had been overcome before. In the end, the Eastern Roman State had not enough people willing to die defending it (especially outside Constantinople, where people had been ravaged by war for centuries), while its enemies where full of people willing to do just that. Mercenary empires never last.

    well, that's interesting
    i had sucess by getting allies until i was sure they wouldn't declare on me first. then waited for them to declare against one of the anatolian minors, got my troops to constantinople, and used my navy to bombard the gallipoli fort and stormed the walls as the fort wasn't full, effectively stucking them in anatolia
    this strategy worked wonders and i was even able to beat the ottos, aq and tunis together by my own, as tunis kept landing troops in the balkans and i was just there waiting to kill them, until i could white peace them. however there is a problem that's happening is that if the ottomans lose the first war, the mamluks will eat half of anatolia(it was common before, but not the way it is now) and austria getting gigantic, effectively stalling your advance in the balkans.
    the midgame is way harder in this patch than the first war

    • @spectre4165
      @spectre4165 4 года назад +10

      Fortunately as Byzantium you can expand across the Mediterranean so if Naples went free you can take them over and can take what you can from left over ottomans. If you build strong alliances too and tech up the mamluks won’t be able to match up and you could pull something off. With that great start though anything is plausible and with rngjesus you can pull it off, hope It goes well!

      In 1.28 I absolutely BTFOd the Mamluks whose armies were twice the size of mine and roughly equal in quality. The first step is to gain absolute naval superiority (which should be your focus since 1444), consolidate your navies in Constantinople, delete all forts you have in Anatolia, declare war and let them occupy your Anatolian lands (this will give you war exhaustion but it's not a deciding factor). Wait for their stacks to try to cross the strait into Constantinople or the adjacent province, move into that province once their stack is locked (you will arrive before them and they won't be able to cancel their movement) and time your navy precisely so that it moves into the sea tile just a day after letting 1 of their stacks cross. This way you will always fight with a terrain advantage and most likely also superior numbers since their stacks won't be moving at the same speed, meaning you will only be fighting 1 at a time. Stackwiping individual armies will be easy since they won't have anywhere to go after losing a battle. Keep doing this until their nunbers dwindle and you have a strong numerical advantage, then liberate your Anatolian provinces, siege them down and finish the war.

    I did almost the same strategy except screw Epirus, alliance with Knights. In my case Turks started to siege Albania, while I occupied kocakeli fort and then ancara, at the same time occupied all the forts on balcans. I got about 50 peace deal score which was enough to get all cores except edirne. Then builded a lot of galleys and in the next war took all of bulgaria and the the rest of anatolia in 2 wars. But you did better completely crushing the ottomans in the first war :)
    And I didn`t do this mess with the estates, just gave some privileges to them and took 5 loans from burgers for 1%, very useful in the begining. My army was 11 regiments + 4 the worsts mercs which you also hired, that all was enough.

    For fellows Byzantium players, there are serious bug where if you take money in a war where you take a lot of territories, any amount of money you ask for would be reset to 1 after you submit the peace proposal. Meaning if you want to take 1000 ducats from ottoman to repay your loans, they would only give you 1 ducat and a fuck you instead. Take war reparation only instead if you don't have enough warscore to get both money and war reparation.

  • @niksan5670
    @niksan5670 4 года назад

    Hey BudgetMonk,
    We, the Byz fans thank you for another cool Byz video. Let the true Rome rise again!
    I haven't played the 1.30 update but in the 1.28.3 version I use a slightly different strategy:
    Instead of attacking the Ottomans, I let them attack me, around 1446. Using Albania and Wallachia as allies while rivaling Serbia. So, I siege down the Salonica (or don't have to if I'm lucky and they attack early in the month) and Kocaeli forts while letting them siege down Constantinople. I carpet siege the Balkans and West Asia Minor and then attacking the Ottoman stack with all my forces in Constantinople. The second battle after this is a stackwipe and the war is over around 1448.
    The big difference with your way, however, is not in the tactics but in the peace deal: instead of taking my cores back, I demand Edirne (the coastal fort, Gelibolu now), Salonika, Uskup, Kocaeli, Bolu and Ankara, plus war reps and all his money.
    This way I get 4 out of 5 of his forts, making future wars much easier. Additionally, I get a border with Serbia (which is usually attacked that time by Venice and maybe Hungary) and I almost immediately attack him as well. An easy war to get Kosovo and all other provinces he is left with, except for Rasca which I leave to him in order to humiliate him. So, by 1450 I already have an Age Objective fulfilled and >50 Power Projection.
    By taking the Ottos money and getting them into loans, it makes the Mamluks much more likely to attack them in just two years. And by improving relations with the Mamluks they usually return my cores for free.
    With this peace deal I also have a border with Candar and Karaman (which I rival) which are my next targets. Most of the time, by these wars I manage to get Ramazan (from Karaman) and Ayntab (from Dulkadir, ally of Candar), so that by 1455 I already have fulfilled a second Age Objective (Present on two continents). And by vassallising Candar (and giving him the muslim provinces, Bolu, Ankara etc) I open another way of expansion into the Caucasus. So that, in 30-40 years I am already a great power!
    What do you think? Would you like to give it a try?

    I tried Radio Res's strategy too, but I like yours better. It is relatively straightforward, doesn't require me to use as many MP on stability and war exhaustion, and it leaves me with a good sized trade fleet when I am done.
    I am now in 1504, control all of the Balkans except for Albania and Bulgaria (my well-fed vassal), all of Greece, most of western Anatolia and all of the Aegean islands except Naxos (which will be remedied shortly), and the heel of Italy (Apulia, I think?). I am currently allied to Muscovy, Austria and the papal state (blasphemous, I know...tis a perfunctory arrangement).

    The problem with Byz in this game is that the timeline starts in 1444, so people always ask "why didn't Byzantium do this in 1444?"
    In reality, 1400s Byzantium is practically dead. Only through unrealistic gameplay mechanics does Byzantium come back after 1453. It's much more realistic and believable that Byzantium could have come back anytime during 1300s or before, which is why I prefer to play as Byzantium in CK2 to prevent it from shitting itself, then use conversion mods to port it to EU4. For added challenge that is still realistic, you could pick a date after the Latin Empire takes over Constantinople.

    Effectively galleys have 24 cannons in an inland sea due to their bonus, so for 100 sailors you get 24 Guns with a galley and 100 for 20 guns with light ships. Light ships do cost less sailors per combat width though.

    • @puppetguy8726

    ok, i did not complain about this on your previous byz guide eventhough I knew it wasn't a reliable guide, but enough is enough I guess. This strat simply does not reliably work. The moment the Ottoman navy decides to engage yours in Marmara, you get rekt. The moment your allies act stupidly, you fail. If the Ottos are allied to Crimea, their navy poses a serious threat. I've also seen time and again that the Ottos sometimes engage in land battles. You mentioned it, but you can't always dow Epirus instantly because they are tend to get allies. A strategy based on restarts and lucks is not a strategy. I might as well make a guide suggesting to restart until Ottomans fight 3 front war and collapse. It just doesn't make sense to me that so many people are ok with this.
    If you belive this a purely skill and strategy based guide, I dare you to do this 3 times in a raw in a live stream?
    Let me tell you how a reliable strat should be;
    1) Counterespionage the Ottos
    2) Improve with Hungary
    3) Scornfully insult a Hungarian rival
    4) Select Venice as rival if Hungary selected them as rival for common rival bonus(not mandatory)
    5) Recruit a diplo rep/improve relation advisor (not mandatory)
    6) Ally Hungary,Albania and Knights
    7) Build spynetwork on the Ottos
    8) Wait for the Ottos to fight a relatively big war in their Eastern borders and dow them when they are commited there
    9) Call to arms Albania, Hungary and Knights via promise land
    10) Win the war, claim some/all of your cores back
    I never liked strategies that aim for the "ideal" start and bunch of restarts. I don't like this guide for yours.

    One thing I've found is that if you land your troops with a bit of a delay (like departing with the transports from Corinth on the 31st), you can most definitely catch both Kocaeli and Gallipoli ungarrisoned, and since they always try and beeline Athens, they won't send enough troops to stop you from winning both sieges (as well as the one in Selanik of course). After that, if you bait them into trying to unsiege Selanik and win a fight there, you can just park yourself in Sofya because that's the only place they can retreat to, which wipes both of their starting stacks and trivializes the war.
