Glad you cleared up this mystery for me. Tides of Time CD was a random purchase and i loved the original Genesis Ecco A LOT! I popped the disc in to see if it played and pretty much preferred the cart version because of load times. Thanks for the video, im gonna go check out your original review of Ecco Genesis. Life is better without alien queens coming down hard on our resources. Ps, the Genesis soundtrack for Ecco was incredible, so i wholeheartedly agree with you. My fav Sega Cd game is Batman Returns for the driving levels. So many cramps in my right hand from trying to accelerate and shoot constantly, but its worth it.
So far, I have a 112-page manuscript for an Ecco remake; the first game in a quadrilogy. 90% of the original story is intact save for the more tedious parts (finding lost cetaceans). I also had to figure out a better reason why Ecco had to travel to the past and close the plot hole of the Atlantan Time Machine existing in the DEVONIAN period. I’m sure Atlanteans aren’t THAT old. There was a glyph in the Library that said they escaped to the past in the machine, so I used that. I also implemented the Warrior Drones in the Machine. What still isn’t clear from the original was if the Machine was a ship in orbit above earth or was it the Vortex planet itself connected by an Einstein-Rosen bridge “The Tube”. Also, how did the dolphins survive the 100 kilometer fall to Earth? Just some minor things to work out. This manuscript is for me-no plans to make it a reality. If anyone has in-depth knowledge of the lore, I’d like your input for my fan-fiction. P.S. Sharp-eyed fans will note sunken Age of Sail sailing ships that have not appeared to be completely reclaimed by the sea (overgrown with corals and such). This suggests not only the presence of humans, but gives a rough time frame of 1500-1700 CE. What do you think? My story takes place 700ish years into the future (from 2024) where humans are presumably extinct after a world war and deployment of WMDs. Littoral zones are known to singers as “Poisoned Waters”. Ecco has the option to explore the edges of these zones. Human technology will play a crucial role in the 3rd and 4th story.
I'm generally more a fan of the chiptune soundtracks in *both* Ecco games than their CD counterparts, but fully agreed that 1 has the best CD soundtrack, and 2 has the best chiptune soundtrack. Tides of Time CD is still atmospheric and beautiful, but the individual tracks aren't distinctive, whereas every track on the Megadrive/Genesis version has its own feel/character. The latter is one of my all-time favourites, too.
I sure hope that they add Ecco 2 the Tides of Time and Ecco Jr. on the Genesis portion on Nintendo Switch Online I mean we do have the first Ecco the Dolphin game on there so why not
Even though I give up on the games quickly when I pick them up, I've always really admired the Ecco games. I really want to love playing them as much as I love looking at them.
I think I marginally prefer this version over the cart as I really like the music and FMV, but it feels like they phoned it in here. The big missed opportunities were the "3D" ring stages. The Sega CD can do sprite scaling and properly scaling 2D planes, so even if they weren't going to add any more levels, maybe they could have redone the ring stages to look a lot nicer.
It would be great if you could talk about the Sega Genesis and especially the Sega CD and even the Saturn if you have it, in detail. Half your audience probably doesn't know much about even the Genesis console itself, much less the CD or the Saturn and the peripherals. And especially the secrets of the console or what could have been, as in what was planned or a Japanese or Euro exclusive. Also how other countries were still even enjoying the Master System. [Due to the continued release of new variants in Brazil, the Master System is considered by many video gaming publications to be the longest lived gaming console in video games history, a title it took from the Atari 2600.] - wiki I will even aubscribe to your channel if you talk about the Sega Channel... 👀 And don't forget about the Sega Game Gear and the Sega Nomad. Even if you do not have them, you probably know more than many about them. Maybe even do a few smaller videos or one big one.
...Maybe? I'd have to figure out a good way to record Game Gear footage (I don't have a Master System). I have recorded a little Game Gear footage, but it's not the best looking.

See, that's what gaming does. Expression of ideas and how desperately we need creatives.

Ooooh! I'd love a upgraded 3D ring stage! That was always my favorite part of Tides of Time.

...Maybe?

May the Fourth be with you. 🖖
