Kurt Cobain had Danny ferrington build him a custom guitar in 1992, the guitar was used heavily during the In Utero recording sessions and has a very unique sound.
Great video! We do still make the V88-D as special order, but it hasn't been on our retail list for a few years. We'll work on getting back in standard production and on the website. We haven't made 3XV since 1999. I'll see if I can resurrect that design later this year. - Clyde
I'm so happy this video reached the Bartolini Team, it's actually crazy how the V88D and 3XV might be back for customer retail soon, again thank you Clyde and the Bartolini Team!
This helps immensely to track down which bartolinis’ were used. I’ve been building an exact ferrington replica and couldn’t find any info. Thanks clyde!
This dude, Kurt had a custom guitar that he sugested to get built, it has super rare components that are almost imposible to find, nobody really knows how he used it and in what... And you said: "Ok, Let's build it". Honestly I envy your balls dude
Its hard too find much about this guitar and its rumoured Kurt may not have even liked it that much, but who knows... I like it, rather so much that i have a had a clone myself for over 16 years.
It's so insane as a Seattle resident to see all of your content. I was looking back at your older videos and your first guitar you literally got at the same place I go to lessons and started my music passion. Your such an inspiring guy lmao, one of the greatest content creators I've come across.
a sensational guitar with a unique sound! it's about time someone made a video of it, thanks for the effort mate! definitely one of my favorites along with the iconic Telecaster Courtney
You've done it again, sir! You create the most awesome intros I have ever seen! I would love to listen to these, if you ever released them anywhere I would buy them in a heartbeat. Your skill as a creator is simply stunning. chapeau
This is the only chanel that I watch every video when it comes out, keep doing it man ! Your work is amazing! The clips you make, the gear, the sound, everything comes together so nicely! Cheers from way down here in Argentina
Dude. This is insane with the sound. I’ve been chasing this for years with multiple ds-1’s and such. You nailed this. This would sell faster than a jagstang for sure.
I’ve got to say, I have been watching you this last week, and you have quickly become my favourite RUclipsr ever, no joke. Please never stop making videos, these are amazing❤
Beautiful ferrington build, i really dig that natural with pearl pickguard look, and that ferrington sounds absolutely wonderful. You did a fantastic job building that ferrington, looks and sounds like a dream, nails that in utero tone as well Great video! I'll stay updated for the next upload. Edit: was genuinely surprised that the scratch take of pennyroyal was played on this guitar, really interesting! I always thought it sounded like the jaguar's bridge pickup but guess i was wrong all along, always learn something new from your videos.
That's some cinematography there, dude! I've never been to Seattle and I will never be, but you've capture what that far away city (from me) represents to me. There's an atom of Seattle in every Kurt fan.
You turned me on to the "sound city" doc that inspired my to paint and add a throw rug to my studio. I watched all your tone videos while I painted. Thanks for content and the inspiration!
@@AaronRashSchaller makes a 5 way switch that is 30mm deep so it would leave you with more wood, don’t think there’s any way around the pickup depth. Great sounding guitar, it looks like the real Ferrington except the neck looks like a Tele 24.75 scale with CBS headstock on the original.
As a very low rent & amateur dabbler in building guitars, I can say that this is nice! Got lots going for it, both in the looks department and its sounds too. I'm liking the subtely offset body, the full-fat pre-cbs-look headstock, the fretboard block inlays and the simple control layout. Tone-wise, it speaks for itself! tbh, if it were mine, I'd pop on one of them cigar tube trem.s just for the looks... but that's just me. Thanks for making the vid. - and the guitar, too obs. !! Good Job, Dude !!
Hey, love your sounds. Would be awesome if you made a video describing how you record these, mics you use, mic placement and signal chain. That would be super interesting.
It’s extremely impressive how you’ve blown every other nerd channel on RUclips out of the water, good shit man. I wish there were a channel like this with this kind of attention to detail for every band I admire, I’d kill for this level of accuracy regarding bands like the Pixies or The Doors or the Velvet Underground.
Yes, especially the Pixies, although I suspect that the Pixies used their studio rig live most of the time, and I bet that Nirvana guitar tone can get pretty close to the Pixies sound, due to Kurt being heavily influenced by the Pixies.
For The Velvet Underground, @Cam Forrester does some good videos, but there's not usually much technical explanation. Most helpful technical explanation video I've found was actually this dude ranting about VU tunings: ruclips.net/video/E_wYhyprmpQ/видео.html
I have a replica myself, built about 16 years ago, you can find some info on it around the place jagstang and offset forums. I dont play a lot of Nirvana stuff these days but when i do, my ferrington clone does it well. I went through 3 pickup variations over the years and finally ended up with some locally made custom wound ones. I honestly forget the magnet types and values as its been so long. I never fitted the coil split but my bucker is equipped for it if i ever do. Tonally i kind of liken mine to something between a a strat and a tele in terms of neck and mid position, bridge it really isn't like anything else ive ever owned. I regret going short scale, should have got 25.5 but hindsight is always 2020. Lovely build you have done and cute kitty. I had to move my bridge because it wouldn't intonate properly, despite bridge being where it should have been. Mines sonic blue with the tort pg. I managed squeeze in a low profile 5 way.
Great build. It really does sound just like the In Utero guitar on the songs you mentioned. I'm impressed. Fender should release this as a Cobain signature model because I don't have your enviable skills and I could never build one myself.
Very nice build Aaron. I love Bartolinis too, and have had a few over the years. The guitar that I've owned the longest is a 1964 blue Fender Mustang that is 100% original and unmolested. I can dial in a lot of Kurt tones on it, but not all of 'em... I got that Mustang back in the mid 70s, and bought it from its original owner, who got it when he was a kid in 1965 and he paid $125 for it... I think those old Mustangs have the best designed whammy bar of all the various Fender bars that were produced. You can activate it with your baby finger, it's so responsive... and those pickups are truly amazing. They sound hotter and more transparent than comparable era Strat pickups imho. I wonder if they were wound differently than Strat pickups of the same period? Anyway, that's a really excellent build, congrat's on your ability to produce something like that, and it really nails some of those elusive tones that we all know and love... ;)
Granted, I first started, and then never stopped, listening to In Utero when I was 9, but I always assumed these tones were some kind of acoustic guitar. It never sounded like an electric to me until now... You're blowing a 37 year old Nirvana fan's mind right now. How have I never heard about this guitar before?
Great video! We do still make the V88-D as special order, but it hasn't been on our retail list for a few years. We'll work on getting back in standard production and on the website. We haven't made 3XV since 1999. I'll see if I can resurrect that design later this year. - Clyde

The neck sound on the 3XV rules and if you bring it back I'd probably sort out getting a set.
Yes omg please! I need to buy these pickups!!
Hell yes! This is good to know!

Its hard too find much about this guitar and its rumoured Kurt may not have even liked it that much, but who knows... I like it, rather so much that i have a had a clone myself for over 16 years.
I just envy his money
I think you may need to reevaluate what takes “balls” in this world lol.
“No one knows how he used it.”
Oh yeah we do. POWER CHORDS.
Absolutely mind-blowing build, I'm at a loss for words. You are an inspiration!
The 2 goats of the Nirvana guitar community in one place, now we just gotta get JQ in here.
I agree
Damn
Ur right
woah, its you
your like a legend
This absolutely needs to become an official guitar that people can buy
In the pic you can see he used a squier Jaguar neck, building guitars is not too difficult if you're interested! But I agree..

My friend Danny Ferrington made this guitar. He also made guitars for George Harrison, Johnny Cash etc. He is an extremely talented luthier
My mom is good friends with him! Cool guy
Your intros always are always so sick dude. You should start posting your music somewhere officially its so inspiring
Your work is awesome, I love your videos. Especially intros got me everytime!!
I can not explain the emotion that your playing your original work invokes. It is simply fantastic.
Mad lad, you actually did it! The depths you go into on every video just keeps on surprising
Man I just wanna say your tone recreations are phenomenal I watch a lot of tone recreation channels and you nail it every time please don’t stop
I love your original music, really a great addition to your already enjoyable content!
Dude, please make a album of just you playing, your original songs are so good!
we need that album now 😿
One of the best chanels I ever seen on RUclips. Thank you, I can't stop watching your videos. You are incredible.
Im soo addicted to the intro song man, the tone, the slow build-up. It's inspiring me like crazy!!
Absolutely love the aesthetic of your videos, they remind me of all the old videos and stuff I’ve seen on Kurt
Your channel is amazing! Great production and stunning accuracy !
You are getting such a cool collection of guitars can't wait to see what you get next Aaron!
always get excited when i see you posted!

Your videos are the best thing RUclips has ever suggested me. Thanks for reigniting my love for Nirvana! Greetings from Poland!
I love your editing it’s so aesthetic
Hell yeahhhhh I always get so stoked when I see you upload a new video ❤❤❤
You've done it again, sir!
You create the most awesome intros I have ever seen! I would love to listen to these, if you ever released them anywhere I would buy them in a heartbeat.
Your skill as a creator is simply stunning. chapeau
Your intros are always sick! Awesome vibes. Great video. Rest in peace to Mr. Bill Bartolini
what a perfect channel to hit all my niche interests on nirvana tone and gear. keep it alive man!
Those intros are out of this world. Keep doing such great videos.

Love these nirvana videos. Something so special about all those songs. Thanks for doing this 🙏🙏🙏

Okay, I have a serious problem. Since the video came out I´ve watched this amazing intro like 30 times and it still gives me goosebumps.
..ointment.
Dude, your videos complete me. They always provide real joy. I think you're me but, somewhere else.
Dude, the middle plus the neck together sound gorgeous!
Taking nerding to Nirvana to a whole new level. Thanks for your videos. Please keep it coming. 🤘
sounds great. so warm on that neck pickup
Thanks for putting this together! Finding real information, outside of a few sketches, in the 90's was near impossible.
Another amazing video aaron love keeping up with your skill progression and tone recreations keep it up!
Thanks!!
That's some cinematography there, dude! I've never been to Seattle and I will never be, but you've capture what that far away city (from me) represents to me. There's an atom of Seattle in every Kurt fan.
You've nailed the tone once again.
Just found your channel, love it. I also love Kurt Cobain’s tone.
Great work, appreciate it ❤

I knew it! came out great dude, much love
i like your intro song.. "NIRVANA" vibes surely. and great job on your guitar build. salute

You're a brave man hand drilling those stud holes omg lol. Anyways the tone is wild, it's spot on. Cool build, cool video!

Wow. Just discovered your channel. Your filmmaking is superb and your tones are crazy good.. If I were Netflix, I’d offer you a series.
